    Piyush Pandey, the adman who gave Indian advertising its soul, passes away

    MUMBAI: Piyush Pandey, the creative colossus who spoke to India in its own voice passed on on Friday aged 70. The man behind Fevicol’s unbreakable bond, Cadbury’s Kuch khaas hai and Asian Paints’ promise to colour every joy had been suffering from an infection. His funeral will be held on Saturday at Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai.

    For more than four decades at Ogilvy India, Pandey rewrote the rules of Indian advertising. He arrived in 1982 at 27, fresh from stints as a cricketer, tea taster and construction worker, and walked into a world dominated by English. His first assignment was a print ad for Sunlight Detergent. What followed was nothing short of a revolution.

    Pandey didn’t just change the language of Indian advertising—he changed its grammar. He brought Hindi, colloquial idioms and the rhythms of everyday India into the mainstream. His campaigns for Fevicol, Cadbury, Hutch and Asian Paints became cultural touchstones, teaching a generation that the truest ideas are often the simplest. “Har khushi mein rang laaye” wasn’t just a tagline. It was philosophy.

    Under his leadership, Ogilvy India held the top spot in Agency Reckoner, an independent survey by The Economic Times, for 12 years. In 2004, he became the first Asian jury president at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. In 2018, he and his brother, filmmaker Prasoon Pandey, became the first Asians to receive the Lion of St Mark, Cannes’ highest honour for lifetime achievement. In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the first Indian advertising professional to receive the honour.

    Despite the accolades, Pandey remained disarmingly modest. A cricket lover to the end, he compared himself to a player in a team sport. “A Brian Lara can’t win for the West Indies alone,” he once said. “Then who am I?”
    He had a simple credo: advertising must touch hearts before it wins awards. “No audience is going to see your work and say, ‘How did they do it?’” he said. “They will say, ‘I love it.’” He often warned young creatives against chasing technology at the expense of empathy, urging them to stay rooted in human experience.

    Born in Jaipur to a family of nine children, Pandey grew up surrounded by creativity. His siblings include Prasoon and folk singer-actor Ila Arun. He lent his voice to radio jingles as a child. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Bhopal Express and penned the lyrics for Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, the song that became shorthand for Indian unity. He even acted, appearing in the 2013 film Madras Cafe.

    His political work was equally memorable. In 2014, he crafted Ab ki baar, Modi sarkar, a slogan that helped sweep Narendra Modi to power. But his truest legacy lies not in politics, but in the stories and storytellers he nurtured.

    Tributes poured in from across India. Prime Minister Modi called him “admired for his creativity”. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman described him as “a titan and legend” who “transformed communication”. Uday Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, remembered Pandey launching his bank in 2003 with a campaign describing banking as “common sense”. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta captured the mood best: “Fevicol ka jod toot gaya. The ad world lost its glue today.”

    Pandey stepped down as executive chairman of Ogilvy India in 2023 to take on an advisory role. He is survived by his wife, Nita, his family and a creative community that continues to draw from his philosophy: that the best ideas are born not in boardrooms, but in the lives of ordinary people.

    The man who turned commercials into memories has left the building. But his booming laugh, his trademark moustache and his stories—rooted in the street, in life, in listening—remain. India’s advertising soul just got a little quieter.

    Parle rules the roost as Britannia bags snack crown in Brand Footprint 2025

    MUMBAI: Looks like Parle still has India eating out of its hand. The biscuit-to-snack giant has once again topped the charts as the most chosen in-home FMCG brand, retaining its #1 spot for the 13th year running with a whopping 8,605 million Consumer Reach Points (CRPs), according to Worldpanel by Numerator’s Brand Footprint India 2025. Right on its heels was Britannia at 8,241m CRPs, while dairy heavyweight Amul secured third place with 6,517m CRPs. Clinic Plus held steady at #4, but the real climber was Surf Excel, which finally scrubbed its way into the Top 5 in-home brands with 3,438m CRPs, rising from #8 in 2023 to #5 this year.

    Haldiram’s pulled off a masala move, breaking into the Top 10 in-home list for the first time, climbing from #19 in 2023 to #10 this year with 2,513m CRPs. Other standout performers included Balaji, which expanded its rural snack pack reach adding 10 million shoppers ( plus 22 per cent CRP growth), and Godrej Expert Crème, which boosted its shopper base by 15 million (plus 37 per cent CRP growth).

    When it comes to out-of-home (OOH) snacking, Britannia kept its crown with 655m CRPs, but it was Balaji that made the biggest crunch, jumping to #2 with 510m CRPs, followed by Haldiram’s (460m), Cadbury (458m), and Parle (299m). Amul also rose to #6, riding a creamy plus 19 per cent CRP growth.

    While FMCG brand choices in India grew in 2024, the pace was slower, dragged by a food and beverage sector slowdown. Yet, India continues to outpace global averages: 60:40 odds of growth here, compared to 50:50 worldwide. Interestingly, smaller brands are punching above their weight, showing higher CRP growth, while big players slow down.

    “Growth comes from expanding the shopper base, whether through innovation, new formats or deeper rural reach. India remains a vibrant market with challenger brands steadily gaining ground,” said Worldpanel by Numerator MD for South Asia K. Ramakrishnan.

    With 414 brands across foods, home care, beauty, beverages and dairy in the study, the 2025 report confirms what Indians have always known whether at home or out, their brand loyalties are built bite by bite.

    For those seeking culinary indulgence, Social outlets are offering retro-themed celebrations with KitKat-infused desserts and attractive “1+1” beverage deals. ITC Sunfeast Baked Creations is unveiling a limited-edition collection starting at Rs 179, featuring specialities like chocolate heart bento cakes and strawberry noir pastries.

    Fashion retailers are joining the celebration, with Pantaloons offering Rs 1,000 off on purchases above Rs 3,999, while Relaxo footwear is presenting tiered discounts up to 20 per cent across its brands. Beauty giant Nykaa’s “Pink Love Sale” is promising up to 60 per cent discounts on premium brands through 16 February.
    In a refreshing twist, redBus is celebrating singlehood with its “Sabse Single Kaun?” campaign, offering the winner free lifetime solo travel. Similarly, boAt and Flipkart Minutes are partnering with actor Arjun Kapoor for a witty campaign targeting singles, promoting noise-cancelling headphones as the perfect escape from Valentine’s Day festivities.

    FNP’s “Pyaar Aisa Karo” campaign is emerging as a marketing triumph, attracting 165 brand partnerships within 48 hours, demonstrating how the season of love is evolving into a significant retail opportunity across sectors.

    Says a marketing consultant: “Normally, Valentine’s Day only works for certain product categories and services in terms bumping up sales. This year, however, there’s a lot of optimism around as the government has given a heavy income tax incentive in the hope consumers will pump the extra savings back into the economy.”

    It’s  the consultant’s job to see  the cup as  half full, not half empty. 

    We shall only know if love triumphed, or the pocket did – a few months down the line.  Until then, fall in love, or at least enjoy the feeling of being in love with YOURSELF!

    Mumbai: Cadbury Bournvita has launched a new campaign film, titled “Faith, Not Force,” with a strong reminder for society to recognise and nurture every child’s individual potential.

    Conceptulised by Ogilvy Mumbai, the campaign is a movement that aims to enlighten parents to take notice of their children’s true talent instead of forcing them into preset career moulds. It is supported by a high-decibel 360-degree marketing campaign, including print activations, partnerships with leading social media platforms, and influencer engagement.

    As a society, we’ve always dictated what our kids’ futures should be. Even though we have their best interests at heart, we force our kids towards a particular profession, often ignoring their natural inclination and talent.

    And to demonstrate this in a manner that registers and drives the point home, the brand has decided to do something audacious. It transformed the iconic Bournvita Jar, found in every household, and forced the jars to become something they weren’t destined to be—a toilet cleaner jar, an egg box, a tissue paper box, a glass cleaner bottle, a ketchup bottle, a soap box, a cooking oil bottle. These jars contain Bournvita powder inside them but don’t look like the Bournvita jars they were meant to be.

    The intent is to shock consumers when they reach out for the iconic Bournvita jar at shopping aisles and our direct-to-consumer website and notice these strange-looking packs, to help them draw a parallel to situations when children are also forced to follow a predetermined path that may work for others but may not be true to the child’s individual potential.

    The Bournvita Forced Packs are available at select Star Bazaar outlets as well as online. By bringing these jars home and sharing their pledge, parents can demonstrate that they, too, are opposed to forcing children and support “FaithNotForce.”

    Mumbai: Cadbury 5 Star has taken its famous tagline “Do Nothing” a notch higher. While other brands spend a fortune on deploying ads and in-app banners during the festive season, Cadbury 5 Star has reduced its budget to zero and declared that it can now “do nothing” to advertise.

    That’s because the brand has simplified its logo into a graphic of five stars. Now every time any app asks for a rating, the five blank stars on the app screen will resemble the new 5-star logo, which means every app will end up advertising for the product without even intending to. As a result, the brand is now visible across apps without the need to spend or do anything.

    Conceptualised by Ogilvy, the one-of-a-kind “#5StarsEverywhere” campaign cuts through the noise of regular, high-budget promotional activities by deftly playing on what the brand does best: innovate.

    Ratings have become an integral part of all D2C services, from food and grocery delivery to audio books and online shopping. Executing yet another brave idea, Cadbury 5 Star jumped at this opportunity and made itself synonymous with ratings across the board, essentially hijacking every app platform and smartly turning it around to be an ad for the chocolate.

    With their new logo now present all over the internet, the brand now plans to hijack other mediums for free advertising over the coming weeks, by leveraging this crazy approach.

In the festive season, when brands bombard consumers with thousands of branded ads, we cleverly redesigned the 5 Star wrapper to mimic the “ratings” sections that are present across most apps and subliminally turned them into ads for 5 Star. So now anyone who sees an app rating page will think of Cadbury 5 Star. Yes, you will see a 5 Star literally everywhere. The list goes across platforms, service categories, languages, and countries.     Mumbai: As the country gears up to celebrate Diwali, Cadbury Celebrations has rolled out a new campaign “#ShopsForShopless” to celebrate the power of communities coming together through technology-enabled solutions. The launch will be supported by a 360-degree communication campaign with amplification across media touchpoints.

    The campaign’s goal is to empower and support those who do not own permanent stores.

    After promoting local businesses for the last two years that were impacted by the pandemic, the brand has elevated the festive fervour by extending a helping hand to local hawkers. The brand will be leveraging QR code technology through which users can scan a Cadbury Celebrations pack to identify nearby hawkers and the products sold by them. It’s a seamless interface wherein consumers can also promote and set up a virtual shop for their locally known hawkers by adding simple details like vendor name, phone number, and a few product images onto the website. Once registered, anyone can shop for the products via a phone call, SMS, or even a video call. Thus, enabling hawkers to continue their business without the hassle of finding a new spot every day, through their shop on the internet!

    Weaving purpose into one more heartwarming campaign, this effort will promote thousands of hawkers across the country.

    Mumbai: Under the Madbury campaign, Mondelez India has introduced two new limited-edition flavours created by the consumers.

    After winning consumer hearts throughout the country during the last two editions in 2021, the brand was on the look-out for the most unique combinations with Cadbury Dairy Milk that represented “Meethin Yaadon Se Bani Yeh Cadbury.” The brand has selected two winning flavours, ‘Crispy Rabdi’ and ‘Crunchy Cola,’ after rigorous consumer testing.

    The launch of the winning flavours will be amplified through digital films, outdoor and print.

    The campaign secured over 3.2 million entries from consumers from over 5,000 locations across the country. The participants were allowed to choose from 100 ingredients across eight categories, and crispy rabdi, biscuit tea, crunchy cola, tiramisu, and banoffee were just some of the delectable combinations tested before announcing the winning flavours.

    ‘Crispy Rabdi’ is a perfect blend of authentic rabdi flavour with crispy butterscotch nuts, and ‘Crunchy Cola’ is a fizzy cola flavour with crunchy Cadbury Gems, created by Omkar Madhav Awate from Pune and Mughda Satish Kulkarni from Ahmednagar, respectively, made the cut from millions of entries.
