    Star India wins: SC disallows Prasar from retransmitting shared sports feed live

    NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has said that shared feed of sporting events can only be carried on the terrestrial network of Doordarshan or DD FreeDish. 

    The judgement would help private broadcasters like Star India from possible losses in subscription and advertising revenues due to sharing of signals with Prasar Bharati which were eventually carried by private DTH and cable operators. Immediately after the judgment became known, DD and PB officials went into a huddle to study the ramifications. A DD official declined to comment.

    In a significant judgment, a division bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that, though the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007, allows the feed of a sporting event of national importance to be shared mandatorily with Prasar Bharati, the public broadcaster cannot utilise it on a notified channel which has to be compulsorily carried by private distribution platforms. 

    While the judgement enables Prasar Bharati to expropriate the feed, the private sports channels will not be competing against Prasar Bharati on a commercial basis for the same content. 

    The judgment came on an appeal by the pubcaster against an order obtained by Star India from a two-judge bench of the Delhi High Court comprising Justice B D Ahmed and Vibhu Bakhru.

    Hathway implements Oracle E-Business Suite

    MUMBAI: Hathway Cable & Datacom has implemented Oracle 11i E-Business Suit as its ERP applications in order to manage data of different lines of its businesses. The multi-system operate offers services in areas of cable TV, broadband and cable channels.

    Covered in the first phase were the purchase, stores and inventory, accounts and finance functions. This went live from 18 January. In the next phase, which will start shortly, the ERP solutions will involve the human resources, marketing and sales functions.

    Hathway has engaged the services of Satyam Computer Services for the implementation of this project.

    “Our business processes are ready and in line with Oracle’s integrated solutions which will tightly integrate the various functions, business processes, key stakeholders and employees across the organisation through this ERP solution,” said Hathway Cable & Datacom MD and CEO K Jayaraman.

    In April 2006, Hathway decided to implement Oracle Applications 11i E-Business Suite This was to run on HP servers using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Advanced Server and Oracle 10g database on the Sun server platform.

    “The implementation of this ERP solution is expected to provide better visibility on our transactions and inventory. This will improve our customer delivery performance, reduce inventory and process cycle while bringing down operating costs. The solution is also expected to better cost of compliance and resource utilization through standardized processes, and improve customer service with better controls,” said Jayaraman.

    Cas effect: net reach of TV genres down in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata

    MUMBAI: With conditional access (Cas) coming into effect in certain areas of Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi, the net reach as well as market share of all key genres has come down with the exception of Hindi News and cable channels.

    This is not surprising as Hindi news channels are free to air.

    Audience Measurement and Analytics has done a study on how Cas has afected television viewing. Total usage (Usage per viewer) of television shows a drop of 14 minutes in the first week of January 2007 versus the last week of December 2006.

    In Delhi the drop at the peak of prime time (for cable homes) is close to 12 per cent in the first week of the Cas rollout. Similarly Hindi movie channels too lost viewership all across the day. Mass channels and the mass genre retained reach but lost out on market share and time spent. Cable channels were the biggest gainers in this situation notes aMap.
    Mumbai presented a picture similar to Delhi with mass genre (Cable Homes) losing in terms of viewership in evening prime time and movie channels losing viewership in afternoon and evening prime time. Hindi News and Cable channels gained in market share as well asusage per viewer.

    In Kolkata the drop in ratings of mass genre across various day parts is the most. The drop is as steep as 25 per cent and 39 per cent during the afternoon prime time and the evening prime time respectively. There is a similar drop in ratings of Hindi movies and the drop during the peak day parts both in the morning and evening prime time is to the tune of 23 per cent. Cable and Hindi News channels gained market shares as well as registered an increase in the usage per viewer.
