Star Sports reveals IPL 2020 sponsors in promo

Mumbai: The Disney Star India (read: Star Sports sales) team seems to have done it again: breasted the broadcast sponsorship tape for the IPL 2020 in good time, even as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to close many of its deals.

The roster of sponsors, which was revealed in the first IPL promo look pretty healthy, clearly showing the confidence that brands have in the success of the tournament which is slated to flag off on 19 September in the Dubai International Sports Stadium in the UAE.

It’s digital first brands, as expected and predicted, that have come on board as co-presenting broadcast sponsors. This includes fantasy sports app Dream 11, online shopping major Amazon, digital payments company PhonePe, and edutech unicorn Byju’s.

Amongst the associate sponsors figure some old sports backers and some new ones: Cadbury Dairy Milk, Sunfeast, Coca-Cola, Polycab, Rummycircle, Kamla Pasand Masala and  McDowell’s.

For this year, Star Sports claims to have already sold out 75 per cent of the IPL inventory. There are over 60 advertisers, including FMCG, auto, BFSI, online shopping, edutech, and other new-age brands, for spot buys, PPL shows, and features. Some of the brands in this list include Coca Cola, ITC, Mondelez, P&G, Nestle, Colgate, Britannia, GSK, and Reckitt. Star has also indicated that the number of advertisers and the amount of ad spends is higher than the usual. The network claims to have witnessed heavy demand from brands as Dream11 IPL cuts across gender and ages

The broadcaster reveals that brands from BFSI categories have shown great interest in this season of Dream11 IPL. They are seeing it as a unique combination of festive and a high impact opportunity to engage and influence consumers whose buying behaviour has been disrupted.

On the programming front, Star Sports has increased its content for pre-shows thus making more inventories available for this popular asset for brands that want to participate in this high impact property during the festive season.

IPL is the biggest live sporting event happening in the subcontinent after a hiatus of nearly five months. People are keenly awaiting the tournament to begin. It is expected that the viewership of the game will be higher as audiences have sorely missed live sports. As per BARC, currently, TV consumption is higher over pre-Covid2019 times as people are restricted to their homes. The matches, this year start at 7:30 pm and will increase audience availability by more than 20 per cent, as per BARC.

Over the years, the league has been regarded as the biggest platform reach and engagement for brands as it has continued to set viewership records across demographics year-on-year. The twelfth edition of the league witnessed 613 million viewers (consolidated + PPL + Surround). The broadcaster will continue with its focus on regional channels. IPL 2019 also saw some record-breaking numbers through women viewership. Nearly 175 million women viewers aged 15 years and above watched Vivo IPL across India between 23 March and 12 May 2019. As per the data from the broadcaster, the top 50 shows among women include cricket and IPL dominates primetime with 3.5 per cent leadership margin.

  • Can you Imagine That on Disney Channel India?

Can you Imagine That on Disney Channel India?

KOLKATA: Kids in India have been cooped in their homes all day due to the restrictions put in place on account of the pandemic. As per BARC data, they have been watching a lot of Disney Channel India as it has seen a viewership surge of 40 per cent. In a bid to give the kids something new to nibble on, it is all set to launch its most anticipated property Imagine That on 6 September.

“We want Imagine That to inspire kids to express themselves while upcycling products through do it yourself (DIY). We believe recycling or repurposing through DIY can help you create a product in a simplistic way. With partners like Byju’s, Cello ColourUp, and Savlon, I think this property will stay in kids’ and audiences’ minds for a long time,” said Disney India and Star India infotainment & kids head Anuradha Aggarwal in a press briefing.

The show’s teaser shows host creator and illustrator Rob teaching kids how they can make interesting objects from easily available materials in their homes: birds from paper, a rickshaw, an elephant and a dinosaur from a cardboard carton, and robots from tin cans. For those who don’t remember, Rob is Harun Robert who used to host the famous award-winning M.A.DDIY kids series on Pogo from 2005 till 2010. Rob also is the creator behind the YouTube channel Mad Stuff with Rob, under the Sony Music umbrella.

With Imagine That’s launch, Disney Channel India expects to garner eyeballs from both kids and parents and is sanguine that its viewership growth will hold even as the country is opening up.

Aggarwal disclosed that given the large percentage of single TV households, co-viewing has always been a reason for the increase in the channel’s viewership. For the new show, the channel is targeting a larger band of age groups – younger kids who can watch it with parents, older ones who can experiment with the DIY themselves.

“All over the world, we use a lot of live TV or characters and stories that come with them. While DIY format works well, the format needed a real person. We have Rob with us for the show who is a legend at DIY,” she added further.

Media observers are convinced that Imagine That is a good idea. “Most parents have been logging on to YouTube and signing up for skill courses to help their kids self-learn at home,” said a media veteran. "With schools set to stay closed for some time at least now Imagine That should find a large audience on Sunday mornings. Also, it probably has given a lot of opportunities to integrate its brand partners which are in some way linked to learning and education into each episode.”

Aggarwal stated citing an industry report that the kids’ genre has weathered the Covid2019 storm slightly better than the other genres in terms of advertising revenues. Reason: fresh episodes of animation shows continued to be produced from remote connected locations by India's animated producers even during the lockdown. Among these: Bapu,Guddu, The Hagemaru Show, Selfie with Bajrangi and Gadget Guru Ganesha, which it launched on 22 August.

Aggarwal  is happy that the unprecedented time has brought in a new paradigm as far as TV consumption is concerned. “There is no primetime anymore in TV. Viewing by both kids and parents has stretched the whole timeline as well as added to the non-primetime. So, it’s very hard to figure out the core-watching hours. What we are also seeing is morning-day part has seen a huge surge in viewership,” she says.

Did someone say TV is dying?

  • IPL and festive season to boost marketing sentiments: Experts

IPL and festive season to boost marketing sentiments: Experts

NEW DELHI: The Covid2019 has not only crushed the global economy, but it has badly impacted the live sporting events across the world. Every sporting event was canceled or postponed due to the virus, including the Olympic 2020. While some of the games resumed in Europe and the US, there has been a major upheaval in the sporting calendar.

India's mecca of sports, Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to take-off from 19 September in UAE, and cricket fans are eagerly waiting for this sporting event.

Indiantelevision.com organized a virtual round table to discuss more on the current state and future of Live Sports in India. The round table witnessed several industry veterans sharing their opinions and insights on the subject. These veterans included – Mindshare South Asia, COO Amin Lakhani; Dentsu Aegis Network CEO APAC & Chairman Ashish Bhasin; Byju’s head of marketing Atit Mehta; Future Group’s group CMO (Marketing, digital, and e-commerce) Pawan Sarda; IPG Mediabrands CEO- India Shashi Sinha; Group M India business head (Entertainment, Sports & Live Events) Vinit Karnik. The discussion was moderated by IndianTelevision.com Group Founder, CEO & Editor-in-Chief Anil Wanvari.

Hence, the question being asked is: will the IPL’s overlap with the festive season lead to a drop in viewership for the GECs and advertising dollars being sucked out from them towards the league?

DAN CEO APAC & chairman Ashish Bhasin exclaimed, “It will depend on how much marketers are willing to shell out, and the next three months will disclose how marketers are going to make their next move. Covid2019 has taught us to be more adaptable. Decision-making has become more agile.”

Talking about anti-china sentiments, he said, “I don't think there will be any impact on Chinese brands. I see it as a temporary blip, and it won't impact IPL significantly.”

Experts hope that this festive season will bring back the cheer among consumers to buy, which will eventually help the brands. “IPL will be a great stimulator to the festive season,” shares IPG Mediabrand CEO – India Shashi Sinha.

Group M India business head Vinit Karnik describes the upcoming months as very crucial. “From now, India will see three big festivals - Ganpati, Durga Puja, and Diwali. However, the fourth festival, in this pandemic, will be IPL. My optimism comes from the conversations we have had in the past 2-3 weeks, which have been very encouraging. People are willing to spend on this little festival, and that’s an opportunity for us.”

Therefore, the question being asked is: Can we see marketers investing in spot buying instead of buying packages deals during this IPL?

Mindshare South Asia COO Amin Lakhani affirms, “As we move forward, people are taking calculative decisions. The window is open till November end, and a lot of brands depending on their strategy will take a call, and these packages will make a bulk of consumption from the IPL perspective. There are a few clients who are evaluating their positions and want to be a part of it, but it depends on how the business shapes up.”

He believes that IPL is a wonderful opportunity, and brands are willing to be a part of it. They are making initial strategies on how they want to participate.

On brand sponsorship, Karnik says that this will have a huge impact on teams as most of the team sponsors rally with IPL for two reasons- brand saliency and activation. “With IPL going abroad, the activation point gets moot, and for team sponsorships, the numbers will be 12-25 per cent downward for team sponsorships point of view.”

It has been widely reported that for this edition of IPL, Star India has set a target of Rs 3,000 crore in advertising.

According to Sinha, “If the broadcaster reaches closer to last year's ad sales number, it will be a good sign. While the overall industry is still not doing well in terms of performance, but categories work in terms of sponsorship. It will not be as bad as people think.”

Bhasin states that even the last two generations haven’t faced anything like this, so it is unfair to expect that this year is going to be the same as the last one. The context is where we are as compared to three years ago.

He further says, "In this pandemic, digital consumption has reached its highest level. Digital companies have benefitted, and many of them are funded companies. They are in a much better position than many others."

However, he believes that the only exception is live sports because you need a bigger screen. “The skew of ad spends is towards digital, but it is not at the cost of TV. Digital segment will just open up more opportunities.”

It will be interesting to see how the next three months pan and will advertisers open up their purses.

  • What IPL comeback means to the entire industry?

What IPL comeback means to the entire industry?

NEW DELHI-. As numerous tournaments around the globe are making their comeback, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to bring smiles to cricket fans’ faces from 19 September. The game will be held in UAE this year and is one of the most sought after tournaments in recent history.

If reports are to be believed, online gaming and sports firms are all set to spend big on television and digital platforms. With live sports back in action, the biggest question that is being asked is how the business of live sports would fare during the pandemic.

Indiantelevision.com organized a virtual round table to discuss more about the current state and future of Live Sports in India. The round table witnessed several industry veterans sharing their opinions and insights on the subject. These veterans included – Mindshare South Asia, COO Amin Lakhani; Dentsu Aegis Network CEO APAC & Chairman Ashish Bhasin; Byju’s head of marketing Atit Mehta; Future Group’s group CMO (Marketing, digital, and e-commerce) Pawan Sarda; IPG Mediabrands CEO- India Shashi Sinha; Group M India business head (Entertainment, Sports & Live Events) Vinit Karnik. The discussion was moderated by IndianTelevision.com Group Founder, CEO & Editor-in-Chief Anil Wanvari.

Mindshare South Asia COO Amin Lakhani mentions that since the day IPL was announced there has been a sense of positivity and it indicates that we are on the path to recovery. “There is a cautiousness in the market as the businesses have taken a huge setback in most of the segments. Many brands are looking it as an opportunity on how they can engage with IPL. The conversation with clients on IPL is three times more than what we were having with them around television ad spends in last couple of months,” shares Lakhani.

IPG Media brands CEO- India Shashi Sinha believes that it is definitely an opportune moment for IPL to come in. “Metro cities contribute to nearly 35% of overall consumption in India. However, these cities have been most affected due to pandemic and IPL gets large traction from these regions. So, IPL is a good opportunity for brands catering to the audiences in these markets to come out from the negativity. We also feel that the sentiment is really good, and one should not compare IPL to the March – April but to what the mood was in June and July this year.”.

DAN CEO APAC & chairman Ashish Bhasin points out that the Indian market is more sentiment-driven as compared to any other market in the world. “If the mood is upbeat, both advertisers and consumers continue to open their purses. Last year, the economy was not doing as badly as it is doing now, but the mood was depressed. As a result, the advertising industry and many other brands were not doing well. We have already had 4-5 months of bad news, and sometimes we need an escape from it, and IPL has a potential for that. I think around the time of IPL, we will start approaching closer to normality, and once that happens, the universe will expand,” says Bhasin.

Group M India business head Vinit Karnik opines that it’s completely unfair to compare 2020 with last year's performance. “This year has been a completely different experience for each and every sector, but still, I believe there is a reasonable amount of head-room for both GECs as well as the sports sector to survive. I think we have a decent amount of headroom to manage both,” he further adds.

Future Group’s group CMO Pawan Sarda defines the last few months as a complete washout and believes that businesses are still struggling as they have not reached 30-40 per cent of the previous year. Says he, “It’s time to step back and observe how things will happen and then make a decision on our spendings. IPL is a platform that sets the mood for the country. A good amount of advertising is always good for healthy consumption, and since we are in retail, we tend to get the benefit from it. We are not committing anything right now.”

During this lockdown, e-learning has performed exceptionally well. Byju’s head of marketing Atit Mehta shares, “For us, the past 4-5 months have been good in topline and bottom-line growth. We are optimistic and looking forward to the start of the festive season and every other opportunity that comes our way.”

Says he, “As we have lost out our bid, we will now have to look at other options as far as IPL is concerned.”

So, overall the mood is very upbeat within the brands and agencies as they keen to once again go out and reach their consumers.

BYJU’S unveils Shah Rukh Khan’s new talk show

MUMBAI : Edtech company BYJU’S has unveiled a new series of TVCs featuring the ‘King of Bollywood’ Shah Rukh Khan that highlights the increasing preference for online learning by children today. With a strong student-centric message, the new ad campaign cuts across age groups to create more awareness among parents about the evolving learning habits of students and the best way for them  to learn at home.

Conceptualized and created by Spring, the ad campaign focuses on BYJU’S’ core belief that children learn better when their learning experience is personalised and immersive. The TVCs portray the superstar as host of a talk show for children – “Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani”- where he discusses the most common and relatable household debate – “How should children learn at home?”. In this show, children discuss their daily challenges of learning from home. They also explain their changing learning preferences to Shah Rukh Khan in a humorous way through popular dialogues from his movies.

The hero of all the films are the children who bust age-old learning stereotypes and talk about the power and impact of tech-enabled learning. This new campaign celebrates the evolving learning habits among students, the importance of conceptual learning and why parents should become more accepting of the new way of learning, through four fun and relatable films. The films see Shah Rukh Khan urging everyone to adapt to the newer and better way of learning with the message “Parhai ki larai ko khatam karo”.

BYJU’S chief operating officer Mrinal Mohit said: "Our new ad campaign highlights one of the most common debates between parents and children – What’s the best to learn? The core objective of these films is to help parents understand and embrace the advantages of tech-enabled learning. It also reiterates how it is fast becoming a primary learning habit for the digital natives of today. The on-going crisis has led to a big behavioral shift in the mindset of parents who are becoming more accepting of online learning platforms as they are witnessing its impact in real-time. With our new ad campaign, we want to further convey that BYJU’S is the only learning program a child needs after school. With the immense popularity that Shahrukh Khan enjoys, we are confident that we will be able to address the common apprehensions of parents and further shape the evolution in learning that is taking place across India.”

Shah Rukh Khan said: “I love teaming up with BYJU’S because, as a parent, I truly believe in their vision and the message they want to share with the world. Parents play a crucial role in shaping their child’s learning habits. We need to step up and motivate our children to embrace new and effective forms of learning. With technology-driven platforms like BYJU’S, parents can help their children continue learning in these uncertain times from the comfort of their homes.”

In light of the Covid2019, BYJU’S made the complete app content free and also introduced free live classes by the top teachers. Since lockdown, BYJU’S has witnessed a 3X growth in the number of students learning from the app and the average time spent on the app has increased to 100 minutes daily. 6 million new students started accessing the app in the last month alone.

  • How Too Yumm hit a six with the IPL

How Too Yumm hit a six with the IPL

MUMBAI: Bang for the buck. That’s what brand and marketing managers look for whenever they put their money behind an event. And one such property that has been gaining marketers’ interest over the years is the Indian Premier League (IPL).

One of the largest marketing platforms in the country, the league has witnessed some stellar cricket and legends make their mark in the game. While this happened on the field, players also made a mark off the field. No. Not the cricketers, we’re talking about brands. With creativity and innovation, brands have made a mark and left a legacy year on year with some outstanding advertising. But there exists a myth. The general perception is that while the IPL is a great marketing platform, only brands with deep pockets can partner or associate with it. But we have seen brands like Byju's, PayTM, Vivo, Asian Paints, Dream 11 take pole advertising and sponsorship positions over the past few years both on-ground and broadcast. We also came across a few brands that have found creative ways to bring alive their brand’s proposition and partner with the IPL. One such brand is Too Yumm and its association with the IPL as the ‘Fall of Wickets’ partner on broadcast.

Too Yumm – an FMCG brand from the RP-Sanjiv Goenka group stable – came on board as a Features Partner ‘Fall of Wickets Partner’ on live television.

It was launched three years ago as a low-calorie option under group company GuiltFree Industries for those who love snacking but abstain from doing so for health reasons. Chairman Sanjiv Goenka at that time had said the group would be investing around Rs 10,000 crore over the next five-six years to get the brand to a Rs 6,500 crore turnover.

It made its debut in the highly competitive Rs 28,000 crore plus national snacking market where heavyweights such as Pepsico’s Lay’s and Kurkure, DFM Foods, Bikanervala, ITC’s Bingo, Pratap Snacks’ Yellow Diamond, Parle, Haldirams, and Balaji dominate.  Adding to that is the plethora of small-scale branded and unbranded unorganised regional and local players that also find custom.

Too Yumm’s differentiated brand promise was – and is – that its snacks are baked and not fried and have 40 per cent less fat than the existing fried snacks brands.

For year one, GuiltFree spent on traditional media apart from expanding its distribution. But in year two it decided to diversify its budget and put some of it on IPL and its feature.

Too Yumm creatively married its brand proposition of ‘Fried Snacks Out, Too Yumm In’ in moments where there was a fall of a wicket in the match. The branding came alive during these moments on TV and was visually appealing as well. Every time a player got out, his lonely trudge back to the pavilion would be boxed in the horizontal and vertical L and Aston bands with Too Yumm branding and taglines “Fried snacks out, Too Yumm in” and “Fried Snacks Ko Karo Life se Out”. The brand also used innovative hashtags to capture these moments on social media. The more the wickets that fell, the greater the exposure the brand got. Additionally, Too Yumm also resorted to spot buys during the IPL to the extent its budget allowed.

“Too Yumm being a guilt-free snacking brand, it can be munched on while being engrossed in a nail-biting match and the fall of wicket feature, which is sticky,  helped us to give a strong reminder about the brand to the viewers,” says Too Yumm chief marketing officer Anupam Bokey. “With the campaign #OneGoneNextOn, we wanted to create a brand proposition that snacking with Too Yumm is good. Generally, any match would give us an opportunity of at least 10-12 wickets falling and during which we tried to do moment marketing.”

The group had also signed on Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador. Kohli – a fitness fanatic – had discontinued his association with PepsiCo – a year before signing up with Too Yumm  – as he did not want to promote colas anymore.

“The Indian captain is somebody who walks the talk. So there’s a lot of credibility when he says something and consumers and fans are more likely to accept it,” says Bokey.

He adds, “The combination of celebrity sportsman as an endorser and association with the IPL uplifted the brand to get recognition. The objective of being associated with the IPL in the first year was to create brand awareness along with the launch of a new product Multigrain Chips. In the following edition, we supported the campaign #SayNoToFriedSnacks that was launched at Kumbh Mela a month earlier, where Too Yumm became the very first brand to get a Guinness Book of World Record at Kumbh.”

The launch of Multigrain Chips was done through a one-minute ad spot during the strategic time out in the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab on 20 May 2018. It showed Kohli doing the unthinkable – munching on chips – but it was revealed that he was actually munching the healthy ‘Multigrain Chips’  of Too Yumm.

Bokey points out that the IPL generated very high engagement and active viewership in a very short period of time, as there were matches every day during the tournament between April and May. According to him, Too Yumm’s metro awareness has been growing – from 13 per cent pre-IPL 2018 to over 70 per cent with 2019 IPL.

The IPL association makes eminent sense for other reasons too: the brand fit.

The IPL is about super-fit cricketers and their teams battling it out on the green to gain supremacy in arguably the world’s most exciting sporting league. And Too Yumm is all about healthy safe snacks for all those who are fitness-minded and yet want to munch some baked items during the day. Since launch, its product range has expanded to cover quinoa puffs, veggie stix, foxnuts, multigrain chips, and Karare.

Bokey believes that no other platform gives as much reach as the IPL. “It gives a lot of leverage, especially with viewership numbers, generating a combined reach of over 800 million that includes Hotstar and other vernacular commentary channels,” he says.

He swears by the association, despite the fact that it comes at a stiff price tag. “Unlike other media, IPL is a very well measured and researched event, which gives the brand great confidence to invest in it,” he reveals. “The league helps the brand to get an accurate ROI, as well as higher recall compared to other genres.”

Of course the brand proposition, quality of idea and integration and the creative executions need to be exceptional to leverage the platform well.

He cites Hansa Research data, which shows that Too Yumm had the second-best ‘Recall Return on Investment (r-ROI) in the 2019 IPL.

No wonder the company parks around 15-20 per cent of its ad spend on sports, including the IPL. “Cricket – being a religion in India – creates appropriate traction for brands and we, being a smaller enterprise, have used it for the past two years and have been delighted with the relationship,” ends Bokey.
