    IMG Media hires former ESPN Star senior exec

    MUMBAI: From broadcasting to selling sports programming and event properties – that’s the path Former ESPN Star Sports business development & corporate communication (south Asia) director Rathindra Basu has taken. Recently, he hopped on IMG Media, which is amongst the world’s largest indpendent producers and distributors of sports programming, as vice-president and head of sales in the Indian sub-continent.

     

    In his role at IMG Media he will be looking after sports media content distribution and sales for the SAARC countries; covering all forms of media rights – including TV, audio, fixed media, in-flight and closed circuit, broadband and mobile. His responsibilities include developing key relationships with major sports broadcasters and other TV networks including the public broadcaster.

     

    Speaking to indiantelevision.com Basu says: “In my new role I will be looking at expanding our reach across the Indian subcontinent and reaching out to as many broadcasters for distribution and sales deals.”

     

    Basu will report to IMG Media Sr VP and head of sales Asia Pacific Chris Guinness, based in the London office and IMG Media Sr VP and head of sales Asia Pacific Leena Singarajah, based in Selangor, Malaysia.

    He will continue to be based out of New Delhi.

    MUMBAI: Interbrand, a brand consultancy, has named Graham Hales as its global chief marketing officer and Andrea Sullivan will be the new chief marketing officer of Interbrand North America.

     

    Hales most recently served as chief executive officer of Interbrand London, while Sullivan served as executive director of client services and was responsible for client services and marketing for Interbrand North America. In their new roles, Hales and Sullivan will work closely to integrate marketing and business development initiatives to drive growth across Interbrand’s global network. Hales and Sullivan will work with regional managing directors to engage new clients while deepening relationships with existing clients, ensuring they continue to benefit from the firm’s strategic and creative offerings and services.

     

    As CEO of Interbrand London for the past four years, Hales led key brand engagements with some of the firm’s most high-profile clients, including the BBC, British Airways and Samsung. Hales brings extensive global experience to his new role as Interbrand’s global chief marketing officer. Prior to serving as Interbrand London’s CEO, Hales was Interbrand’s global chief communications officer. While in that role, he was instrumental in helping to create original content around the firm’s annual ‘Best Global Brands’ report.

     

    While serving as executive director of client services, Sullivan led the client services and marketing team and co-founded Interbrand’s global corporate citizenship practice. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in developing and promoting Interbrand’s thought leadership on a global scale, having delivered interactive experiences with partners such as the ANA, Cannes, Deloitte, Guggenheim, Harvard, Lyons, MoMA, NYSE, United Nations, World Business Forum and Yale. Sullivan was a founding member of G23, a landmark consultancy comprising top female leadership from within the Omnicom network.     MUMBAI: Users of Chinese web portal QQ.com can now learn English directly from the site thanks to a partnership deal with BBC World Service. It is the first Chinese portal to enter content partnership with the BBC.

    From today 14 February 2007, users of the portal will be able to access BBC Learning English content specially tailored for Chinese speakers.

    BBC Learning English teaches reading, listening and comprehension. It explains various points of the English language through human interest stories and topics including UK lifestyle and culture.

    The BBC will start English teaching on QQ.com with two popular features, Take Away English and Quizzes. Take Away English the BBC says has been a hit with Chinese users as it offers MP3 audio and pdf text downloads, so the learner can quite literally take away the BBC’s English lessons.

    Topics range from the latest Harry Potter book and online gaming to Chinese football players, and include listening, reading, exercises and an audio glossary. Quizzes offers learners an interactive test of their English vocabulary and grammar and helps them with teacher feedback.

    Looking ahead at what BBC Learning English has in store for Chinese online users, Alison Konieczny, who is the editor of BBC English Language Teaching China team said, “We are planning to treat Chinese learners to two more features which will enrich their English vocabulary in fun and entertaining ways. Real English teaches words and phrases learners won’t necessarily find in their dictionaries, and Word Master is an interactive game which tests and teaches vocabulary common in English proficiency exams.”

He then joined the Indian media conglomerate, The Times of India Group, where he worked with the vice chairman’s office overseeing business strategy across the Group’s media properties, including Indiatimes, The Economic Times and Bombay Times.

    In 2003, he moved to Yahoo! India where he was responsible for creating new revenue streams across both the internet and mobile divisions including launching Yahoo! India’s E-commerce initiative and its mobile adverting products, states the release.
