  • Delhiite Irfan Alam crowned Zee’s ‘Business Baazigar’

Delhiite Irfan Alam crowned Zee’s ‘Business Baazigar’

MUMBAI: “Ali, your worst fears have come true. The dark horse seems to have taken away the top prize,” said Zee Telefilms chairman Subhash Chandra giving his characteristic side glance to Ali Ismail, who was till then a hot favourite for the Business Baazigar title.

Then, moving on, he dropped the bombshell with his final declaration. “Irfan Alam from Delhi is the Business Baazigar.”

At a colourful ceremony held at the Taj Presidency, in south Mumbai’s swank Cuffe Parade area, Zee Telefilms thus came up with the winner of the country’s first ever business reality show, Business Baazigar. After more than two hours of intense drama, the reversal of fortunes saw Irfan Alam, the wild card entrant into the finals, stealing the show. Irfan snatched the top prize from the other two finalists Puneet from Chandigarh and Ali Ismail from Mumbai in a closely fought contest marked that road an emotional rollercoaster.

The jury, in a surprising turn of events, offered one of the Mini Baazigar winners – Irfan Alam, the opportunity to compete for the grand Business Baazigar title and win full funding for his idea. The condition for this entry was that he would forfeit his Mini Baazigar winnings of Rs 2 million. As they say, fortune favours the brave (in this case the one with the most self belief). Irfan took the chance and emerged the winner.

The dramatic decision of the jury to name Irfan as the Business Baazigar came as a complete surprise to the audience who had voted for Puneet (47 per cent) and Ali (30 per cent) over Irfan (23 per cent).

According to an official Zee spokesperson, Zee will provide the full funding to the business idea put forth by Irfan. Meanwhile, Puneet and Ali will be receiving partial funding. The finale episode will be telecast on 12 August at 8 pm.

Irfan, who was earlier voted out of the show, had gone on to win a Mini Baazigar project – which Zee offered to the best ousted contestants – with his idea to systematise the working of cycle rickshaws in Delhi by bringing them under one roof, raise their standards of living and simultaneously provide the public a better, more efficient transport system. He plans to generate revenues from providing value added services and using the rickshaws as mobile advertising media. His innovative project and the confidence he displayed to score an initial victory with the project impressed the judges and got him a wild card entry into the finals.
Speaking on the culmination of his pet project, Chandra revealed Zee’s plans to launch a second season of Business Baazigar. “We want to make the show even better in our next attempt. This time we received about 200,000 entries and in the next edition we expect about million entries. We want suggestions from all the business leaders to make the show even more vibrant in our next edition.”

Felicitating the winners on behalf of sponsor Aditya Birla Group, Rajashree Birla pointed out that the show fitted very well with Aditya Birla Group’s vision. “Business Baazigar really went along with our social vision of reaching out to people and tapping their entrepreneurial potential,” said Birla.

Zee TV business head Punit Goenka said, “We are glad to announce India’s first Business Baazigar, after several months of hard work undergoing gruelling tasks. Irfan has proved worthy to be Business Baazigar. This show is an exceptional one that has intense reality drama, besides the unique concept. Business Baazigar again attempts to bring life to a commendable business idea. We are glad to have Aditya Birla Group as our partners in this noble venture of supporting a deserving business idea.”

The grand event had as its guest of honour Union minister of commerce & industry Kamal Nath. The event was attended by the who’s who from Mumbai’s business community consisting of names such as aviation minister Prafful Patel, former I&B minister Ravishankar Prasad, Vijaypath Singhania, Mukul Kasliwal, Kishore Biyani, Shashi Ruia, Naresh Goel and Ramesh Agarwal. Among the media bigwigs present were Madison Communications CMD Sam Balsara, Lodestar Universe CEO Shashi Sinha, FCB Ulka MD Anil Kapoor and Euro RSCG CEO Ishaan Raina.

VC fund to support ‘Business Baazigar’ winner

MUMBAI: A venture capital (VC) fund with a corpus of Rs 200 million will support the compelling business ideas from contestants of a reality show on Hindi general entertainment channel Zee TV.

Business Baazigar, which will decide the fate of budding entrepreneurs through 24 episodes, will finance the business project of the winner of the show through the VC fund. The extent of funding will be decided by the jury comprising Zee Telefilms chairman Subhash Chandra, Passionfunds CEO Mahesh Murthy and Prof. Anil Gupta of Indian Institute of Management.

“Subhash Chandra has tied up a VC fund, the size of which is Rs 200 million. It is floated by a consortium, but we can’t disclose the promoters. The fund will support the winner of Business Baazigar, the amount of which will be decided by the jury,” said 25 FPS managing director Alankar Jain, the producer of the show.

Will the winner have the power to negotiate with the VCs on the amount of equity it wants to dilute and at what value? “Yes. This will also be shown on the final episode of Business Baazigar,” said Jain.

Can the contestants negotiate with other VCS who will have access to the business ideas as the episodes progress? “There is a lock-in period during which period they can’t start approach other VCS,” Jain said.

The VC fund may also extend seed funding to other contestants apart from the winner. “Based on the viability of the project, the fund may decided to finance some innovative ideas and support it at the seed level,” said Jain.

Business Baazigar will have 50 finalists which will be further scaled down to 20 contestants. They will be put through grueling tasks that will test their business acumen and team spirit.

Audiences will be allowed to SMS their preferences in the final episode so that they can predict the winner. “But there is no voting system and the winner will be decided by the jury,” said Jain.

Business Baazigar debuts on 31 March, airing one-hour episodes on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm.

  • Zee looks for a winner in Rs 110 mn ‘Business Baazigar’

Zee looks for a winner in Rs 110 mn ‘Business Baazigar’

NEW DELHI: Now Mumbai denizens need not worry about cleaning their countless shoes at home or go looking for the friendly neighbourhood cobbler. A shoe laundry, like a dry cleaner’s shop for clothes, will take care of all the shoe needs.

The shoe laundry is a dream come true for a young woman entrepreneur who was in need of funding the idea. Zee Telefilms came to her help with the initial money. Though the girl and her idea failed to make it to the last round of Zee TV’s soon-to-start reality show Business Baazigar, she is busy shaping her business venture.

“The shoe laundry is already operational for about four months and the young woman will be coming back to us with a progress report,” Zee TV business head Punit Goenka told Indiantelevision.com on the sidelines of a press conference here, to announce the launch of Business Baazigar where the underlying theme is: “idea lao, paise le jao” (bring an idea and get funded).

And, that’s the magic of the reality show, as Zee funds innovative ideas of people who have been eliminated during the show.

Business Baazigar is a journey of 250 participants who will eventually be scaled down to 50 finalists. Among them, the final 20 will be put through gruelling tasks that will test their business acumen and team spirit.

After every task, the jury, comprising Zee Telefilms non-executive chairman Subhash Chandra, himself a rags-to-riches success story, will decide the fate of the contestants. Eventually, one participant will emerge triumphant and will have Zee Telefilms funding his/her business venture.

An expensive show with high-decibel marketing

Business Baazigar is also one of Zee TV’s costliest shows to be mounted. At Rs 110 million, this 25 FPS-produced 24-episode programme attempts to what other game shows have failed to do for Zee Telefilms’ flagship channel, Zee TV — deliver ratings and viewer ship.

“This show promises to entertain the audience with its intense reality drama and unique concept. We have given our best and hope the audience likes it,” said Goenka, the eldest son of Chandra.

While admitting that an ongoing game show Kam Ya Zyada failed to live up to expectations, Goenka added that it’s Zee TV’s endeavour to give the audience what it likes, but “sometimes ideas click, while at other times they don’t.”

“So, in deference to viewers’ preferences, we take off programmes that fail to tickle the viewers,” he added, hinting that Kam Ya Zyada will be phased out after its present run.

However, the network is leaving very few stones unturned in promoting Business Baazigar, which is also hopeful of a second season.

Apart from the traditional cross channel promotions on various Zee channels, which are likely to attract a diverse profile of audience, the new reality show will be promoted via outdoor, print and some innovative initiatives on the Internet. Cellular phones, too, would be extensively used for promotion.

“We do have some new marketing initiatives (costing a packet) lined up that’ll unfold from Thursday. The aim is to arouse curiosity amongst viewers of all hues,” Goenka said.

Concurring with Goenka was 25 FPS managing director Alankar Jain who said that marketing is an important tool to write a successful TV show. Especially one like Business Baazigar as the ramp up time is small.

“We are hoping that the show connects with the people in its early episodes only as the whole series is time bound, ending with the 24th episode,” Jain added.

Business Baazigar debuts on 31 March, airing one-hour episodes on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm.

Apart from Chandra, the jury consists of Passionfunds CEO Mahesh Murthy and Prof. Anil Gupta of Indian Institute of Management. Cyrus Sahukar will host the series.

Zee TV to launch ‘Business Baazigar’ by month-end

MUMBAI: Zee Telefilms chairman Subhash Chandra will make his debut appearance on television in the network’s big budget reality business talent hunt show Business Baazigar.

The one-hour show will launch in the last week of March as a weekly.
Chandra will be seen playing the role of a no-nonsense judge to perfection, as the show promises to give Zee TV lots of scope for reality-oriented programming.

According to market estimations, Zee TV has spent in the range of Rs 100 to 120 million for the first season of Business Baazigar. The season will have 24 episodes, from which 15 episodes have completed the post-production phase. One winner will be chosen at the end of the season.

Chandra and Passionfunds CEO Mahesh Murthy, along with a new guest judge each week, will judge the contestants through personal interviews. MTV veejay Cyrus Sahukar will anchor the show.

Business Baazigar will enter the marketing and promotion phase next week, with the channel officially announcing the launch. The show has been slotted in the weekday band.

Zee has already devoted a lot of time on this pet project of Chandra’s. The media house first announced the big ticket property in the second half of 2004. The channel had even roped in Aditya Birla Group as the title sponsor of the show well in advance. The show, which was initially produced by 24 FPS, is now being handled by Zee’s in-house team.

Business Baazigar is a search for people with smart business ideas. The show proposes to give these people the money they require to start a business based on their ideas. This money, which is essentially in the form of venture funding, will run into millions, and different winners will get different amounts depending on their business idea.

The entry of Business Baazigar will see Zee TV parading as many as three reality-oriented programmes in the weekday line up. The channel already airs the game show Kam Ya Zyaada Monday to Wednesday. It will telecast the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 offspring Sa Re Ga Ma Pa: Ek Main Aur Ek Tu on Thursday and Friday, starting 16 March.
