JioStar’s ‘jersey wahi toh jazba wahi’ breaks gender norms, champions ‘Women in Blue’

MUMBAI: JioStar’s new women’s WC ’25 campaign film opens with the protagonist asking his partner a slightly awkward question, “But is it necessary to wear the women’s jersey?” after she suggests he put one on for a match screening at a friend’s place. His partner, exasperated by the lingering stigma, looks on in dismay, pitying the shame that still surrounds supporting women in cricket. Undeterred, he steps out the door wearing the jersey, hiding it beneath a jacket.

On his way, he notices fellow Indians proudly donning women cricketers’ jerseys, from colleagues to even the office lift operator, who delivers the knockout line, “Virat khelein ya Smriti, jeetega toh India hi na” (whether it’s Virat or Smriti, India will win anyway). The moment sparks pride as the protagonist ditches the jacket and walks into the office with his Smriti Mandhana jersey proudly on display.

With the ICC women’s cricket world cup India 2025 just around the corner, JioStar’s “Jersey Wahi Toh Jazba Wahi” (conceptualised by Bubblewrap Films) celebrates the unifying power of the India jersey. It sends a clear message: no gender norms can diminish the pride of wearing blue, and the joy of support far outweighs the question, “Who watches women’s cricket anyway?”

JioStar, head of viewership and monetisation initiative – sports, Siddharth Sharma said, “This tournament is more than cricket. It is about rewriting history and inspiring a generation. Our endeavour is to channel this moment into a campaign that unites the country, reminding fans to take equal pride in every Indian jersey.”

The ICC women’s cricket world cup 2025, hosted across India and Sri Lanka, kicks off on 30 September in Guwahati with India facing co-host Sri Lanka. With matches lined up against Pakistan, Australia, England and others, the women in blue are chasing a trophy that has long eluded them.

With the roar of home crowds and the momentum of this campaign, JioStar aims to capture a cultural shift: cricket pride is not about gender, it is about the jersey and every fan who wears it.

Leo Burnett CEO Saurabh Verma’s Top 5 ads

There are some television commercials that leave you with a fuzzy feeling that lingers on much after the 30 seconder has gone off air, there are some that make a strong statement so simply that you’re bound to sit up and take notice and then there are some classics, which are forever etched in your mind.

Indiantelevision.com spoke to Leo Burnett India CEO Saurabh Verma to get his list of Top 5 ads in India from June – October, 2015.

Read on to know what he picked:

    1) Amazon’s ‘Aur Dikhao’ campaign was created by Orchard Advertising and captured everyone’s heart by their tagline ‘Aur dikhao.’

“I really appreciate the ad because it gives variety to people. Its niche is very interesting as it gives cultural insights about Indians and their need for speaking more all the time, which has become part of popular culture. Furthermore, the role of the brand in the campaign is very integral.”

    2) Vatika’s ‘Brave & Beautiful’ is an ad created by Linen Lintas and produced by Film Farm Mumbai. It is a strong ad that gives a completely different insight into the idea of a woman’s beauty. The ad dismisses the common perception that the beauty of a woman lies in her lustrous hair.

“It is a spectacular ad because the client has done something, which is least expected in this kind of ad category. It was very brave of the brand to do something like this. They have taken a position in the market place by their strong way of communication. It is a purposeful work and very humane.”

    3) HDFC Life’s ‘Apne Dum Pe, Sar Utha Ke’ ad is life created by Leo Burnett. The ad film depicts the importance of a man in empowering his family to live a respectful life. This three minute ad leaves a strong message by its core thought about ‘Sar utha ke jiyo.’

“I like this ad as it has fantastic content, which deals on the whole brand proposition of ‘sar utha ke jiyo.’ The role of the brand is very integral to the communication. It is very uplifting, positive and optimistic piece of work in the insurance category. I don’t think any insurance company has worked like this for their ad.”

    4) Ambuja Cement’s ‘Great Khali’ ad created by Publicis South Asia. The ad came up with simple yet strong idea by roping in former WWE world champion ‘The Great Khali.’

“This is the most fantastic piece of work in the entire year. I like this ad because it has taken a very simple yet strong concept. It communicates the message through a playful manner. The content is placed perfectly and is shareable. It has great vitality and has strong storytelling with fantastic characters.”

    5) Star Sports’ ‘Mauka Mauka’ (World Cup) ad produced by Bubblewrap Films has competitive content where India challenges Pakistan for a match. Pakistan had never won a WC game against India in last six attempts and again they lose their ‘mauka’ of winning.

“It’s a series, it’s a campaign… an idea that extends beyond one’s imagination. According to me it was a spectacular campaign because it had strong content as well as the ability to live in the current period and get people to interact with the content depending on what was happening contextually with the matches.

  • Star Sports’ new World Cup TVC takes pot shots at Pakistan’s consistent loss to India

Star Sports’ new World Cup TVC takes pot shots at Pakistan’s consistent loss to India

MUMBAI: While the world is gearing up for the soon to begin ICC Cricket World Cup, fans in India and Pakistan are an excited lot too as India clashes with its arch rivals on 15 February during their opening match. To add to the excitement, official broadcast network – Star Sports – has launched a TVC as part of its overall campaign titled #WontGiveItBack.

The 60 second TVC shows a young Pakistan cricket fan sporting the team colours waiting to celebrate the victory over India in the World Cup since 1992. The wait has been so long that he now has a son, who also repeats his father’s routine to no avail as India eventually defeats them. The comic element of the film revolves around the fans’ routine of getting the crackers out for celebration in every edition of the World Cup when India plays Pakistan, in anticipation of their win but only to shelf them back again in disappointment.

The communication brief for the TVC stated that India versus Pakistan in the World Cup is the biggest game on the cricket calendar. It also happens to be the first game for both the teams as they kick off their respective WC campaigns. Secondly, the brief was to ignite a sense of pride and passion amongst Indian cricket fans.

The statistical insight was based on the fact that India holds the bragging rights to this game. India and Pakistan have played each other in the World Cup five times and India has come out victorious each time.

The TVC is produced by Bubblewrap Films, directed by Suresh Triveni and produced by Ketaki Guhagarkar. The Star Sports team comprised Rohit Khanna, Venkataraman Mandalam, Juju Basu, Mustafa Rangwala, Vikas Dubey, Prathamesh Sapte, Atulya Parashar, Ajeet Mestry and Dayanand Bhoite.

The TVC so far has garnered 2,50,050+ views on YouTube. The highly anticipated match will be telecast live on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 3, Star Sports HD 1, Star Sports HD 3 and starsports.com. The coverage of the match will begin from 7:30 am.
