    Dreamworks Reliance Entertainment’s ‘The Help’ dominates Sag Awards

    MUMBAI: At the Screen Actors Guild (Sag) Awards, ‘The Help‘ from Dreamworks and Reliance Entertainment won all the awards it was nominated for.

    The movie won for supporting actress Octavia Spencer, lead
    actress Viola Davis and also for best ensemble in a motion picture. In her acceptance speech, Davis paid tribute to fellow nominee Meryl Streep who plays Margaret Thatcher in ‘The Iron Lady‘.

    The ceremony aired live on Zee Studio. Jean DuJardin won best actor for ‘The Artist‘ which is expected to sweep the Oscar Awards. He beat out Hollywood hearthtrobs George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio as well as mexican actor Demian Bichir.

    On the television side, Best Ensemble in a Drama Series went to Boardwalk Empire while Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series went to Modern Family. Alec Baldwin won another award for his role in the sitcom 30 Rock. Best Female Actor in a Comedy Series went to Betty White for ‘Hot in Cleveland‘. She had won last year as well.

    Melancholia is NCFC’s best film

    MUMBAI: The National Society of Film Critics (NCFC) has named apocalyptic psychological drama Melancholia as the year‘s best film.

    The Society has also chosen Kirsten Dunst as best actress and Brad Pitt as best actor for the baseball drama Moneyball as well as The Tree of Life.

    Though Lars von Trier lost out as the best director award for his work on Melancholia to Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life, his film‘s big win bolstered the offbeat film‘s chances for the upcoming Academy Awards that will announce nominees later this month.

    Set against the backdrop of a country wedding, the dark film explores the strained relationship of two sisters, one a bride played by Dunst, while a strange planet threatens to collide with Earth, wiping out all traces of human existence.

    Pitt, already a strong contender for the Oscars, was honoured for his roles as Oakland A‘s manager Billy Beane in Moneyball as well as a strict father in The Tree of Life.

    Critics‘ awards are important in helping build momentum heading toward the Academy Awards, or Oscars, which are the world‘s top film awards given out on the final Sunday in February by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

    The NSFC includes 58 members from major newspapers in Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Chicago and other cities as well as from Time, Newsweek and The New Yorker and newspapers The Village Voice and the Boston Phoenix.

    The Real Millionaire by Piyush Thakur will be screened in International Competition at 34th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.

    This is his story and that of his family and the villagers‘ journey towards realizing the actual meaning of the word “winning”, reads the synopsis of the film on the festival‘s website.

    The festival will be held from January 27-February 4,2012.

    The film is a story of a farmer Vishnu, who‘s life changes after he gets a call from the reality game show,KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati). This is his story and that of his family and the villagers‘ journey towards realizing the actual meaning of the word winning.

    MUMBAI: Stephen Daldry, three time Academy Award nominee, will be awarded with the Director of the Year Award for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close at the upcoming 23rd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.

    Daldry will join this year‘s previously announced honorees George Clooney, Glenn Close, Michel Hazanavicius, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Octavia Spencer, Michelle Williams and the team behind “Young Adult, all of whom will receive their awards on January 7.

    MUMBAI: The Palm Springs International Film Festival will present Brad Pitt with its Desert Palm Achievement Actor Award for his acclaimed performances in Moneyball and The Tree of Life.

    The year 2011 has proved to be a good year for Pitt. The New York Critics Circle named him the best actor for both Moneyball while the Boston Society of Film Critics named him best actor for Moneyball.

    Pitt will receive the award at the Festival‘s Awards Gala on January 7. The festival runs from January 5 to 16.

    With this, Pitt joins the previous honorees George Clooney (The Descendants), Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), Octavia Spencer (The Help) and Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn).

    Toronto critics vote Tree of Life best film

    MUMBAI: The Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA) has declared Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life as the best film of 2011. The director also received the best director trophy.

    The closest competition came from Michel Hazanavicius‘ The Artist and Alexander Payne‘s The Descendants, both major award contendersthis year.

    The Tree of Life, which stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, in the last week received best film honors from the San Fransisco and African-American film critics associations.

    While Michael Shannon was voted as the best actor for Jeff Nichols‘ Take Shelter, Michelle Williams lapped up the best actress award for her role as Marilyn Monroe in Simon Curtis‘ My Week With Marilyn.
     
    Christopher Plummer won for best supporting actor for his role in Mike Mills‘ Beginners while Jessica Chastain clinched the best supporting actress crown.

    The TFCA award for best screenplay went to Moneyball (Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin), while the best foreign-language film honor was given to the late Chilean director Raul Ruiz for Mysteries of Lisbon. Patricio Guzman‘s Nostalgia for the Light won for best documentary feature.

    British writer-director Joe Cornish‘s Attack the Block won the award for the best first feature while the best animated feature prize went to Steven Spielberg‘s The Adventures of Tintin.

    MUMBAI: Boston critics voted Brad Pitt and Michelle Williams as best actor and actress. While Pitt was voted best actor for playing Oakland A‘s manager Billy Beane in Moneyball, Williams was named best actress for playing Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn.

    In the best supporting actor category, Albert Brooks was named as best supporting actor for Drive, while Melissa McCarthy was voted as best supporting actress for her role in Bridesmaids.

    Martin Scorsese was chosen best director for his 3D movie Hugo.
     
    The Moneyball team of Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin and Stan Chervin picked up the screenwriting award.

    Other category wards are as follows: best cinematography, Emmanuel Lubeski, best documentary, The Tree of Life, best foreign language film James Marsh‘s Project Nim, best animated film, Dennis Villeneuve‘s Incendies, best filming editing, Christian Marclay in Rango and best new filmmaker, Sean Durkin.

    MUMBAI: Brad Pitt has admitted that his days are numbered and he may quit acting upon turning 50.

    Talking on an Australian chat show ’60 Minutes, the 47-year-oldactor said he would quit the acting scene in three years. He also revealed that he might move behind the camera when he steps out of the limelight.

    “I‘ve really enjoyed the producerial side and getting stories to the plate that may have had a harder time otherwise,” Pitt added.

    Mumbai film festival opens to a grand start

    MUMBAI: The 13th Mumbai Film Festival opened yesterday to a grand response, with Bennett Miller’s Moneyball starring Brad Pitt kicking off the event.

    The film was screened on all the screens of Cinemax, Versova, the festival’s main venue.

    Opening the festival, director- producer Yash Chopra lit the lamp along with actress Dia Mirza with President of Film & TV Producers Guild Ramesh Sippy and trustee of MAMI Amit Khanna in tow. Joining them were the International Competition jury members Hugh Hudson (jury president), Jerzy Skolimowski, Na Hong- Jin, Roger Spottiswoode and Sarika.

    Commenting on the occasion, 13th Mumbai Film Festival Festival Director Srinivasan Narayanan said, “The 13th Mumbai Film Festival has certainly begun with a tremendous turnout. We sincerely hope that all those attending will see the effort put behind organizing this popular festival and hope that this year’s selection of films satisfies their appetite of quality cinema.”

    The festival is a Reliance Entertainment initiative, organised by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image.

    Brad Pitt-starrer Moneyball to close TIFF

    MUMBAI: Baseball film Moneyball, produced by Bennet Miller will close this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) on 30 October.

    Based on the 2003 book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis, the film starring Brad Pitt as Oakland Athletics’ general manager Billy Beane tells the true story of how Beane attempted to compete with richer teams by ignoring much of baseball’s conventional wisdom in analyzing players.

    The film that was to have been directed by Steven Soderbergh, who was later replaced by Miller. Aaron Sorkin was also brought in to rework the script. Sorkin also wrote the script for The Social Network, TIFF’s opening film last year.

    Moneyball, that also features Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright, will be released in Japan by Sony Pictures Entertainment on 11 November.

    TIFF will have double opening films this year with Jackie Chan’s 1911 and The Three Musketeers will be screening at the TIFF on 22 October.

    Elizabeth Taylor ranked most photogenic

    MUMBAI: Elizabeth Taylor, known for her beauty and glamour, has been voted the “Most Photogenic Celebrity of All Time,” according to a poll.

    Taylor, who died in March of congestive heart failure at age 79, beat out Jennifer Aniston and soccer star David Beckham, who were placed second and third place respectively.

    Along with Taylor, a few other Hollywood icons were featured on the list including Audrey Hepburn (No. 5), Marilyn Monroe (No. 8) and James Dean (No. 10). Megan Fox who is ranked No. 4, beat Angelina Jolie to put her in the seventh place.

    Jolie‘s longtime partner Brad Pitt narrowly missed out on the top ten, along with actress Freida Pinto.
