    ‘World War Z‘ No 1 film globally this weekend grossing $100 million

     MUMBAI: Brad Pitt‘s World War Z‘s global appeal continues, ranking as the No 1 film worldwide this weekend with a $100 million collection. The film has now earned $263 million at the world wide box office after 10 days in theatres.

    From Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions, in association with Hemisphere Media Capital and GK Films, World War Z grossed an astounding $70.1 million at the international box office this weekend to bring the international cume to a rock solid $135.3 million. Domestically, the film earned $29.8 million in its second weekend, with a cume to date of $123.7 million.
    The film has scored high among moviegoers, and with a strong word of the mouth for the movie the numbers are only showcasing an upward trend.

    With approximately one-third of the international market still to release, the international roll-out of World War Z continues next week with France with additional territories, including Spain and Japan, opening later in the summer.

    World War Z is directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Drew Goddard & Damon Lindelof, and a screen story by Matthew Michael Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, based on the novel by Max Brooks and produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Ian Bryce.

    Sacha Baron Cohen edges out Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt to be Britain‘s highest-paid star

    MUMBAI: Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who played President Prime Minister Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen, in the 2012 film The Dictator has been named Britain‘s highest paid Hollywood star.

    He drew over 20 million pounds in 2012 thanks to box office success of The Dictator and Les Miserables.

    The 41-year-old also added to his earnings with payment for his role as the voice of the lemur King Julien in Madagascar 3. This helped him earn more than fellow countryman Robert Pattinson.

    The actor outran Tom Hanks (17 million pounds) and Brad Pitt (16 million pounds).

    The list was topped by the 50-year-old Tom Cruise whose films like Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol earned him 48 million pounds in 2012.

    MUMBAI: Brad Pitt‘s production company Plan B Entertainment, under its creative partnership with Reliance BIG Entertainment, has acquired the screen rights of Tom Rachman‘s novel, The Imperfectionists.
    The Imperfectionists centers on the quirky, maddening, endearing people who write and read an international newspaper based in Rome: from the obituary reporter who will do anything to avoid work, to the young freelancer who is manipulated by an egocentric war correspondent, to the dog-obsessed publisher who seems less interested in his struggling newspaper than in his magnificent basset hound.
    Commenting on the acquisition, Reliance BIG Entertainment‘s Chairman Amit Khanna said, ‘”The Imperfectionists is a compliment to our slate with Plan B Entertainment. It will make a commercial and extremely relevant film which will play well to an international audience.”

    Ridley Scott resumes shooting of The Counsellor

    MUMBAI: After a small break, director Ridley Scott returned to the sets for the first time since his brother Tony Scott committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. It is still a mystery why he committed suicide, with claims he had terminal brain cancer denied by his family.

    It is said that the 74-year-old Gladiator helmer looked strained and tired as he walked around the sets of his new film The Counsellor.

    The Counsellor consists of a star-studded cast that includes Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz.

    After it emerged that Tony Scott had plunged to his death from a harbour bridge in Los Angeles last month, Ridley Scott had immediately called a halt to the production.

    Brad Pitt to produce Marilyn Monroe biopic

    MUMBAI: Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik has signed Brad Pitt to produce his long-delayed biopic on Marilyn Monroe.

    Discussions about the project had been going on since 2010 but recently Pitt announced that his production company, Plan B, would finance the film with Dominik at the helm. We‘re going to get this one done,” quoted the 48 year old Dominik.

    Titled Blonde, the film started rolling in January 2011, with Australian actress Naomi Watts in the lead. Later it was stalled.

    Earlier, Pitt had worked with Dominik in The Assassination of Jesse James directed by the Coward Robert Ford and the gangster thriller Killing Them Softly that was pitted in the Competition Section for the Palme d‘Or at this year‘s Cannes Film Festival.

    MUMBAI: Angelina Jolie is in negotiations to star in director Ridley Scott‘s upcoming narco-thriller The Counselor.

    The 36-year-old actress will most likely play a small role in the upcoming film just a few weeks after her partner Brad Pitt was said to have a discussion for another small role in the same film, it is understood.

    It is possible for Jolie to join Scott‘s project as she will not begin filming her next film Maleficent until late June or early July. Scott himself has scheduled a June start for the film.

    The Counselor, which is described as No Country for Old Men on steroids, follows a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down.

    It is said that Michael Fassbender is being tapped to star in the male lead.

    MUMBAI: Giving a different touch to the awards season, the International Cinephile Society (ICS) has given top honours to Asghar Farhadi‘s A Separation at its 9th annual awards. The film bagged awards in the best picture, best ensemble, best screenplay and best film not in the English language categories.
     
    Other major winners included Terrence Malick who bagged the award for the best director for The Tree of Life. While the best actor award was bagged by Tom Cullen (Weekend) and Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life), the best actress award went to Anna Paquin and J. Smith-Cameron (both for Margaret).


    Formed in 2003, the International Cinephile Society is an online group made up of approximately 80 accredited journalists, film scholars, historians and other industry professionals who cover film festivals and events on five continents.
     
    The ICS honours the finest in American and international cinema every year.

    MUMBAI: Never in recent times have we seen two or more Oscar awards contending films releasing on the same day in India.


    Come 24 February, this will become a reality when three Oscar award contenders — Artist, Moneyball and My Week with Marilyn — will release.


    While The Artist is considered as the top contender for the Oscars this year, Moneyball starring Brad Pitt has also been nominated in the Best Picture category. Also releasing would be My Week with Marilyn that has been nominated in several categories like ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role‘ for Michelle.

    US agency CAA signs up Priyanka Chopra

    MUMBAI: Los Angeles-based entertainment and sports agency, Creative Artists Agency, has signed up Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra to represent her in the international market.

    CAA represents A-list and emerging stars in movies, television, music, and sports and is often cited as the world‘s leading talent agency.

    Priyanka will join a CAA‘s clientele list which boasts of names like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, LeBron James, Oprah Winfrey, Julia Roberts, Steven Spielberg, and Will Smith, among others.

    The actress, who was part of commercially successful projects like Don 2 and Agneepath, is also working with international label Universal on her debut album, which is expected to release this year.
