  • ‘Daawat-e-Ishq’ triumphs over ‘Khoobsurat’ at BO

‘Daawat-e-Ishq’ triumphs over ‘Khoobsurat’ at BO

MUMBAI: Daawat-e-Ishq opened to a lukewarm opening response and the collections remained on the lower side on Friday, improving marginally on Saturday and as well as on Sunday only to slide again today onwards.

A Muslim background love story with an anti-dowry message, its linear narration makes it a routine fare. The film managed to collect Rs 13.6 crore for its opening weekend.

Khoobsurat, having borrowed the basic plot from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1980 hit of the same name, about a freewheeling woman entering and challenging the norms of the house laid down by the woman of the house, a royal one at that, comes a cropper. An insipid, poorly scripted and executed film, it started with below average opening with a little improvement on Saturday and Sunday as weekends normally do add to the collections. The film collected Rs 10.5 crore for its opening weekend.

Finding Fanny, a zany road movie about a senior citizen being helped by his village mates find his childhood love, has made a little impact at the box office. Despite some favourable reviews by critics, the film has been able to put together just about Rs 23.5 crore in its first week.

Creature 3-D, another Vikram Bhatt horror had to its credit a fully locally computer generated man-eating creature but the film lacked in substance, got monotonous as its stretched too long and failed to generate interest in the viewer. The film collected a poor Rs 16.8 crore in its first week.

Mary Kom sustained ably in its second week in the absence of any formidable opposition and added Rs 11.15 crore in its second week taking its two week total to Rs 53.35.

Raja Natwarlal added Rs 10 lakh in its third week taking its three week tally to Rs 23.85 crore. The movie will be a loser at the box office.

  • ‘Finding Fanny’ wins at the BO

‘Finding Fanny’ wins at the BO

MUMBAI: Creature 3-D has not been appreciated. At 135 minutes, the film is found to be rather too long and taxing for a horror film with repetitive sequences. The makers have got carried away with their newfound creature.

The film opened to poor response and failed to improve on Saturday and Sunday. While its main face, Bipasha Basu, is out of favour with the audience, the Pakistani actor, Imran Abbas Naqvi, failed to make an impression. Also, 3-D is no more a novelty. It ended its opening weekend with Rs 10.7 crore. Not very encouraging.

Finding Fanny (English with dubbed Hindi version) did well at select multiplexes at major metros. In fact, it has done better than the other releases of the week, Creature 3-D. Deepika Padukone has proved to be the main attraction as well as the sustaining star in this film. The film has collected Rs 16.8 crore for its first weekend.

Mary Kom has remained below par despite much hype and gone the way most sports biopics do: mostly ignored. The film managed to collect Rs 42.2 crore in its first week, the drop having started after the opening weekend.

Raja Natwarlal proves to be a nonperformer at the box office with the audience rejecting the routine, run of the mill Emraan Hashmi fare dished out on regular basis. The film, which opened to poor response continued to be so through first week and, then, adding a mere Rs 2.75 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 23.75 crore.

  • ‘Humpty…’ & ‘Hate Story 2’ lead at BO

‘Humpty…’ & ‘Hate Story 2’ lead at BO

MUMBAI: Pizza 3-D has proved to be a poor performer with few takers turning up at the cinema halls. The film collected Rs 2.5 crore for its opening weekend.

Virr Das is another example of a media made star who don’t work on screen. His Amit Sahni Ki List stays poor in its opening weekend with barely Rs 1.75 crore to show for three days.

Riyasat, Rajesh Khanna’s last screen appearance goes unnoticed and might as well as this was not quite the film the legendary super star deserved to be remembered by.

The only film to draw some audience this week is Hate Story 2, thanks partly to its brand equity and to some extent to the exposure its promotion promised. The film has managed to collect Rs 14.5 crore during its first three days.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a rare tribute to an all-time classic, Dilwale Dulhania  le Jayenge in this case that has worked; usually such tributes or imitations in the name of a tribute backfire. After a sturdy first weekend at the box office, the film remained steady and finished its first week with figures of Rs 51.9 crore. The film is reported to have done steady business in its second weekend too.

Bobby Jasoos managed to put together Rs 1.15 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 10.05 crore.

Ek Villain, almost coming to the end of its run, has collected Rs 3.1 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 102.5 crore.

Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty collects Rs 30 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week tally to Rs 111.07 crore.

  • Holiday continues to rule at BO

MUMBAI: Humshakals has been adjudged as one of the worst films of recent times. The critics came down heavily on it especially on social media.

However, thanks to the buzz created on social media people did go out to watch the film out of curiosity and to get a first-hand experience. This has reflected on the film’s collections.

The film has been sold at an unbelievable price considering its face value. All said, it has collected Rs 35.2 crore for its first weekend maintaining even figures all three days despite no opposition.

The film could have gained at least by a crore had the local Delhi-UP distributor not missed out on about 40 single screen cinemas; the condition of the exhibitors signing agreement for October release Bang Bang along with Humshakals was not agreeable to the exhibitors which resulted in these cinemas not screening the Humshakals.

Fugly has not been appreciated and has ended its first week with collections of Rs 9.25 crore.

Chal Bhaag is so poor in its first week as to the very act of releasing the film theatrically has added to the investors’ liability.

Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai has managed to put together Rs 1.25 crore in its first week.

Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty makes the most of open run with no oppositions as it rakes up as much as Rs 30.8 crore in its second week to take it close to 100 crore mark. Its unusual high price needs a better third week which seems likely, again. Its two week total is Rs 97.05.

Heropanti has managed a figure of Rs 40 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 52.85 crore.

  • ‘Queen’ continues its dream run in wk 2 at BO

‘Queen’ continues its dream run in wk 2 at BO

MUMBAI: YRF’s Bewakoofiyaan has not been appreciated as the film lacks chemistry between the lead pair and music doesn’t add much flavour either. The film opened with little over Rs 2 crore and floated between that and Rs 2.5 crore over its four day weekend. The film put together Rs 9.37 crore over four days.

Queen is holding on strongly, a rare film in ages, which has collected more on its seventh day than its opening Friday. The film collected Rs 18.5 crore for its first week. As the film continues to do well in its second week, it can be termed a minor hit.

Gulaab Gang, an ordinary run of the mill honesty vs corrupt politician (both protagonists being woman is what the film expected to cash in on) has been rejected outright. The film could add little to its opening weekend collections to end the first week with Rs 10.2 crore.

Total Siyapaa is fairing very poorly. The film collected Rs 5.85 crore in its first week and will prove to be a loser.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects managed to stay above par in its second week adding Rs 4.85 crore taking its two week total to Rs 35.05 crore.

Gunday has collected Rs 35 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week tally to Rs 78.45 crore.

  • Gunday continues its strong run at the box-office

Gunday continues its strong run at the box-office

MUMBAI: Last week saw two films of different genres release. Darr @ The Mall a direct lift of a Hollywood flick from 1989 and Highway, a road movie. While, Darr @ The Mall is a total reject, Highway, also not creating a fad, is a little better. In which case, last week’s solo release, Gunday has reaped the benefit.

Darr @ The Mall has fared poorly with its day to day collections barely touching a crore mark. The film collected Rs 3.2 crore for its opening weekend.

Highway, banking on Sajid Nadiadwala’s banner and director Imtiaz Ali’s past record, fared a shade better. The film collected Rs 12.7 crore over its opening weekend with the Sunday collections showing a decent growth.  The film’s 75 per cent business came from Delhi-NCR-Punjab and Mumbai. But, that is not enough to slot the film as an earner with as much as Rs 30 crore incurred for the release of the film.

Gunday proves once again that films on male bonding, friendships don’t usually fail. With an excellent weekend of Rs 43.93 crore, the film ended its first week run with a healthy Rs 63.1 crore adding another Rs 8.15 crore for the second weekend taking its ten day total to Rs 71.24 crore. Both, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor have consolidated their positions in the industry.

Hasee Toh Phasee has had a decent second week, its average merits notwithstanding. The credit goes to Parineeti Chopra whose performance is being appreciated by all. The film has added Rs 7.7 crore in its second week, taking its two week total to Rs 33.05 crore.

Jai Ho has not managed to do much business at the end of it fourth week with collections of Rs 45 lakh and a four week total of Rs 105.35 crore. It has not lived up to its expectations as other Salman Khan blockbusters in recent history.

Note: An Rs 100 crore grosser is not necessarily a hit because the take home amount is less than 50 per cent of that amount with over half going towards the theatre’s share and a part of it to the distribution expenses.

  • Solo release ‘Gunday’ makes the most at BO

Solo release ‘Gunday’ makes the most at BO

MUMBAI: Gunday made the most of its combination of two young heroes with growing popularity, its music and Valentine’s Day release date to take a bumper Friday at the box office with a figure of 16.12 crore. Being a solo release also helped. The box office levelled out on Saturday with 12.63, rising again on Sunday to 15.18. The first weekend tally of 43.93 already qualifies the film as another hit for Yash Raj Films.

Hasee Toh Phasee with a weekend of 15.75 crore remained steady on the lower side during the week to collect 25.35 in its first week.

Of the three other releases, Babloo Happy Hai, Ya Rab and Heartless, only the last one managed to reach near one crore mark.

Jai Ho added 3.7 crore in its third week taking its three week total to 104.9 crore.

Yaariyan, coming to the end of its run, added 30 lakh in the fifth week to take its five week tally to 32.95 crore.

Dedh Ishqiya has added 30 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week tally to 26.25 crore.

  • No big BO collection this week

No big BO collection this week

MUMBAI: The week saw as many as four films releasing. Even though Hasee Toh Phasee was the only film with known faces and a prestigious banner to back it, it did not meet up to the expectations and the promotion it was given. The film had nothing to offer to the single screen audience and even the youth and the multiplex audience did not readily take to the film. It opened to a tepid response. While Friday was below average, there was a nominal rise in the Saturday collections and it rose on Sunday mainly at multiplexes, to take its weekend collection figure to 15.75 crore.

Baloo Happy Hai, Ya Rab and Heartless could not draw enough audience.

Last week’s One By Two opened to poor response and remained so as the week progressed ending its first week run with mere a 2.5 crore to show.

Jai Ho that was given an entertainment tax exemption in some states had little effect on the collections as the exemption came after the bad word of mouth had already done the damage. The film added 19.2 crore in its second week, taking its two week total to 101.2 crore.

Yaariyan managed to add another 60 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week tally to 32.65 crore.

Dedh Ishqiya collected 55 lakh in its fourth week thereby taking its four week total to 25.95 crore.

  • BO: A bad start to 2014

BO: A bad start to 2014

MUMBA: It has been a dull scene at the box office windows all over as even the Salman Khan film, Jai Ho, has behaved way below expectations. The single screens were made to pay high MGs (the demand was “More than MGs paid for Dhoom3!). All stand to lose 50 to 60% of the MGs paid. They had a happy ending to year 2013 with Dhoom3 but have had a bad start to 2014. Also, there is no major film in sight in near future to rest their hopes on.

Salman Khan’s sermonising fare, Jai Ho, has not been able to draw crowds from day one. The audience seems to have a strong antenna about their choice and infer a lot from the publicity campaigns of a particular film. The film had a weak Friday and a Saturday which saw a drop instead of a rise in collections. The only saving grace were the Sunday collections which jumped by about 40% over its opening day figures. With an opening weekend of 57.2 crore, the film has not even managed to cross the mandatory 100 crore mark in its first week which is expected of any major star. The film ended its first week with 82.1 crore. It may just about manage to cross the 100 crore mark which still makes it a loser.

The solo release of the week, One By Two is a rank bad film and faced the consequences for being so. Lacking any story worth telling and a coherent script backed by poor handling, it failed to attract even a small fraternity of Abhay Deol fans. At many screens, there was ‘No audience, no show’ status. The film collected 1.4 crore for its first weekend.

Yaariyan, its mediocre content notwithstanding, has made its money. Having collected 32.05 crore in its first two weeks, the film has added another crore to its tally, taking its total to 33.05 crore.

Dedh Ishqiya has run out of steam by its third week. Adding just 80 lakh for its third week, the film’s three week take is 25.4 crore.

  • Muted box office performance pares PVR profit, numbers in Q3-2014

Muted box office performance pares PVR profit, numbers in Q3-2014

BENGALURU: Muted box office performance by most of the films released during Q3-2014 resulted in a 48.6 per cent drop in consolidated PAT to Rs 14.16 crore from Rs 27.55 crore in Q2-2014 for Indian motion picture exhibition, production and distribution house PVR Limited. PVR Limited movie production and distribution segment reported revenue of Rs 6.81 crore for Q3-2014, up 11.27 per cent as compared to the Rs 6.12 crore in Q3-2013, but down  by 4.62 per cent as compared to the Rs 7.14 crore in Q2-2014.
