    ‘Roy’ fails to grab eyeballs at the BO

    MUMBAI: Roy does not quite go well with the moviegoer; a confusing film moving at snail’s pace with nothing happening through its lengthy trudge, the film had fair collections on the opening day thanks to names of Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the cast.

     

    The film maintained about same figures on Saturday but suffered a huge drop of about 50 per cent on Sunday because of India Pakistan World Cup match. The film managed weekend collections of Rs 24.9 crore.

     

    Controversial film MSG: The Messenger fails at the box office.

     

    R Balki’s experiment of a ventriloquist played by Amitabh Bachchan landing his rich baritone to an aspiring mute actor, Dhanush, fails to catch the audience’s fancy. While Bachchan may still be a media star, casting him in such a film is tricky business, Dhanush has little to charm the Hindi audience. Shamitabh does not add much to its already deficient weekend, ending its first week with a figure of Rs 17.6 crore.

     

    Baby continues to make the most of a run of poor oppositions over last three weeks. The film adds a reasonable Rs 6.5 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 75.3 crore.

     

    Khamoshiyan has collected Rs 75 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 6.5 crore. Forced horror film sans content don’t work. A disappointing outcome for the investor.

     

    PK has added Rs 20 lakh in its eighth week. The film has put together Rs 329.95 crore in eight weeks.

    MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ Oscar-nominated blockbuster American Sniper continues to make cinema history, crossing $300 million at the North American box office.

     

    Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, American Sniper has continued to fill conventional and IMAX theatres nationwide. It is now the top-grossing war movie of all time, Bradley Cooper’s biggest live-action feature ever, and the second-highest-grossing R-rated drama ever. In addition, it is the first Warner Bros. non-franchise film, only the seventh Warner Bros. release of any kind, and one of only 50 films in cinema history to achieve this milestone domestically.

     

    Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said, “This is another extraordinary benchmark for an extraordinary film. Rarely does a film come along that strikes such an emotional and thought-provoking chord with such a wide audience. Congratulations to Clint Eastwood and everyone involved in American Sniper on the film’s huge success, both at the box office and in the hearts and minds of people everywhere.”

     

    American Sniper is also showing strength overseas. With just 40 per cent of international markets launched to date, the film has grossed an impressive $85.7 million, with many major territories prepping to release next week, including France, Spain, Japan, Brazil and Mexico.

     

    American Sniper, from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, is based on the book by Chris Kyle, with Jim DeFelice and Scott McEwen.

     

    The movie has earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cooper), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Jason Hall). In addition, Eastwood was honored by his peers with his fourth Directors Guild of America Award nomination and also won the National Board of Review Award for Best Director. The film’s other honors include a Producers Guild of America Award nomination, a Writers Guild of America Award nomination, and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

    MUMBAI: The past weekend has proved to be dismal for the box office with three releases, which all vie for the worst performer tag. Khamoshiyan turns out to be a drab affair with the Bhatt touch visible only in its soundtrack. The film got poor word of mouth and managed to collect just Rs 5.75 crore in its opening weekend.

     

    Rahashya may be based on a real life, well documented double murder case, but gets just about as much attention from moviegoers as yesterday’s headline. And, this story has become stale by all standards. The film opened to a very poor response with no hope of catching up despite being a well-made film. The film had a poor opening weekend with about Rs 20 lakh.

     

    Hawaizaada, a biopic of a maverick self-styled scientist from Maharashtra, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, from which the trade had some hope, comes a cropper. The film comes across as badly scripted and directed one lacking consistency and having no sense of length. A boring fare, the film suffered further after being slaughtered by critics as well as on social media. The poor collections reflect this as the film could manage mere Rs 1.8 crore over its first weekend. It failed to touch Rs 1 crore figure on any of the three days over the weekend.

     

    Baby has not lived up to the hype created in the media before release. The film had way too much similarity in story and substance with a couple of recent films but was worse than them. The film is too verbose with plans of action rather than action itself which is what people want to see from a spy movie. The film collected Rs 52.1 crore in its first week. With three very poor oppositions in second week, the film gets a chance to reduce its losses.

     

    I (dubbed) has collected Rs 1.2 crore in its second week to take its two week total to 11.3 crore. On the other hand, Dolly Ki Doli is a loser facing rejection from day one. The film manages to end its first week with figures of Rs 11.9 crore. Alone adds Rs 2.25 crore in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 19.5 crore.

     

    PK nears the end of its run at the box office as the film adds Rs 1.3 crore in its sixth week to take its six week total to Rs 329.6 crore.

    ‘American Sniper’ hits $200 million at US box office

    MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ Oscar-nominated movie American Sniper has surpassed $200 million at the North American box office on only its tenth day in wide release.

     

    Following its record-breaking first weekend in wide release, the Clint Eastwood-directed film has continued to fill conventional and IMAX theatres nationwide. American Sniper took in an estimated $64.4 million this past weekend, representing the smallest percentage drop ever for a film that opened at more than $85 million, including both three and four-day weekends, and bringing the domestic gross to $200.1 million and climbing. The movie is now, domestically, the highest-grossing film in Eastwood’s long career, and it is on track to become his top-grossing film worldwide.

     

    Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said, “The filmmakers, led by Clint Eastwood, and cast, led by Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller, have created a gripping drama with a rare insight into the toll of war that has resonated with audiences in almost every demographic. We congratulate them not only on the film’s box office success but on generating one of the most talked about films of this or any year.”

     

    Eastwood directed American Sniper from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, based on the book by Chris Kyle, with Jim DeFelice and Scott McEwen. Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller star in the film, produced by Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Cooper and Peter Morgan. Tim Moore, Jason Hall, Sheroum Kim, Steven Mnuchin and Bruce Berman served as executive producers.

    MUMBAI: The solo release of the week, ‘Tevar’ suffered due to its outdated theme as the film is a remake of a 2003 Telugu original, ‘Ukkadu’. The action, the film’s mainstay, is oft repeated over the past few years. The film also lacks in romance as well as chemistry between the lead pair – Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha.

     

    ‘Tevar’ opened to an average response and the collections dropped in the following shows as unfavourable reports emerged. The film has collected a mere Rs 21.7 crore in its opening weekend.

     

    On the other hand, the Rajkumar Hirani directed ‘PK’ starring Aamir Khan continued its dream run at the box office. Making the most of Christmas holidays and poor oppositions for three weeks, the movie crossed the Rs 300 crore mark. The film has collected Rs 42.1 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 311.7 crore.

     

    ‘Take It Easy’, a film aimed at children, performed poorly at the box office, having collected only Rs 35 lakh in its first week.

     

    ‘Mumbai Can Dance Saala’ had a disastrous first week with collection figures barely crossing Rs 10 lakh mark.

     

    Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Ugly’ has managed to put together Rs 2.3 crore for its second week taking its two week total to Rs 7.8 crore.

     

    ‘Linga’ (dubbed) starring superstar Rajinikanth and Sonakshi Sinha has fared below average. The original Tamil movie has also suffered at the box office and not much was expected from the Hindi dubbed version as the South legend has little following in the Hindi market.

     

    Ajay Devgn’s ‘Action Jackson’ has added another Rs 10 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week tally to Rs 58.9 crore.

    MUMBAI: The movie Mumbai Can Dance Saala finds no takers and grossly negative reviews make things worse for the film.

     

    Take It Easy, a film directed at kids, meets with poor response.

     

    Ugly, a bleak kind of film not quite welcome in the festive Christmas week, has been poor at the box office. The film has managed to collect Rs 3.5 crore in its first week.

     

    Rajinikanth’s Lingaa (Dubbed) just passes muster in its first week collecting Rs 4.1 crore.

     

    PK is running a one horse race as the film continues to rule at the box office with no worthy opposition and having made the most of the Christmas holidays. The film has added Rs 94.4 crore in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 269.6 crore. A strong third weekend of about Rs 50 crore sees the film through Rs 300 crore mark.

     

    Action Jackson has added another Rs 15 lakh to its total in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 58.8 crore.

     

    Badlapur Boys adds a symbolic Rs 5 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 98 lakh.

    MUMBAI: Ugly is poor below redemption at the box office with collection figures staying limited to lakhs throughout its opening three days and managing to end its first weekend with a little over Rs 1.5 crore.

     

    PK is enjoying a bumper run. Having opened to mixed response and tepid opening collections, the film came into its own on its first Sunday with almost 33 per cent leap over its first day figures. The film is making the most of Christmas holidays though late shows do show the effect of severe winter in North and other parts of India.

     

    Having collected Rs 89.5 crore for its opening weekend, the film remained steady through the next four days to take its first week total to Rs 175.2 crore.

     

    There are some protests against the film from religious organisations but that is a storm in the tea cup looking at the way it is collecting.

     

    Badlapur Boys has collected Rs 7.5 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 97.5 lakh. Action Jackson has managed another Rs 30 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 58.65 crore.

    MUMBAI: With one of the biggest and widespread releases across all the available screens in India backed by a huge hype in the media with box office wizard of ultimate universal entertainers, Raju Hirani, with his 3 Idiots star Aamir Khan, PK falls short of storming the box office on day one as was expected by the trade. The severe cold in North and many other parts of the country affected morning shows starting as early as 9 am and last show playing at 11.40 pm.

     

    Kids and youngsters flocked the cinemas to make the Saturday a bit better with the figures improving by about 12 per cent which was expected looking at the favourable critic reports and the film’s kids oriented first half. The trade pundits were generous to predict anything from Rs 135 to Rs 150 crore weekends but that was not to be. However, the film had a roaring Sunday business (Rs 36 crore) which helped it put together Rs 89.5 crore for the weekend. It has an open week ahead and Christmas holidays starting in a day to enjoy a lucrative run.

     

    Main Aur Mr Right has collected a poor Rs 30 lakh for its first week. Action Jackson despite its poor content has managed to add another Rs 12.1 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 58.35 crore.

     

    Badlapur Boys has collected Rs 90 lakh in its first week; very poor. Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain has collected Rs 22 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 1.47 crore. 

     

    Zid has collected Rs 15 lakh in third week to take its three week total to Rs 6.4 crore.

    Rentrak to launch box office tracking service in India

    MUMBAI: Rentrak recently announced the launch of its India box-office tracking service, aiming to bring independently verified box-office data in the country. The announcement was made at the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival.

    Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Rentrak’s vice present for Europe, the Middle-East and Africa, Arturo Guillen said, “This can be a win-win situation for all parties involved — producers, distributors and exhibitors.”

    Even with almost 11,000 screens in the country, the box-office data is still largely based on figures reported by distributors and producers rather than being directly sourced from cinema locations. The company will collect and analyze data from cinemas directly, according to media reports.

    According to industry estimates, India clocks around 3.5 billion admissions per year with total revenues touching $1.5 billion. With the demand for Indian films getting huge overseas as well, Rentrak is already tracking Bollywood titles in 44 countries while the company’s India client base will include local arms of Hollywood studios that have become active in local productions such as Disney, Fox Star Studios and Viacom18, in addition to Indian banners, the report added.

     “As we have seen in other markets, cinemas benefit from our data as it helps them track footfalls, which is helpful for in-cinema advertising and programming decisions,” said Rentrak India MD Rajkumar Akella, in an interview to The Hollywood Reporter.

    “A leading Indian producer once told me that data is the basis to define reality,” added Guillen, referring to how data can also help in tracking consumer tastes.

    This is Rentrak’s second attempt at entering India after its now-defunct 2007 pact with Mumbai-based Bigtree Entertainment, which provides entertainment ticketing applications and solutions.
