Hollywood teen flick ‘The Duff’ to hit Indian theatres on 5 June

MUMBAI: High school teen flick The Duff is all set to hit theatres across India on 5 June, 2015. Multivision Multimedia will release the movie here.

The Duff was a great success at the US Box office with an opening weekend of $10.8 million and total US collection of $34 million.

Directed by Ari Sandel, The Duff stars Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell and Bella Thorne in the lead. The film is produced by McG, Mary Viola, and Susan Cartsonis. It is a CBS Films presentation a Wonderland Sound and Vision / Vast Entertainment production.

Talking about the India release, Whitman said, “I have been told that Indian youth are ardent followers of US movies and television. India is known to have a thriving English speaking population and are in sync with western culture. It’s a great place for The Duff to release”

Director Sandel added, “India is becoming an increasingly important territory for Hollywood films. High schools are the same everywhere and I am sure so are the problems, even across the world. I hope that the audience will connect with and enjoy our movie.”

  • ‘Bombay Velvet’ collects Rs 15.8 crore in opening weekend; ‘Piku’ picks up

‘Bombay Velvet’ collects Rs 15.8 crore in opening weekend; ‘Piku’ picks up

MUMBAI: Bombay Velvet has turned out to be the disaster it was predicted to be. From casting Ranbir Kapoor as a Tommy gun totting criminal to the way the film’s promotion was handled, especially the publicity material, went against it. From the film’s posters to promos, nothing inspired viewer confidence or curiosity.

The film’s opening weekend collections are a terribly poor at Rs 15.8 crore. Kapoor has his fan following and, to an extent, so does Anushka Sharma, yet the film failed to garner decent footfalls on its opening day. The emerging word of mouth publicity from those who caught the movie early happened to be so negative that the film failed to better its Friday figures even on Saturday, which is a normal trend howsoever bad a film may be. It is strange that thanks to social media discussions, those who still went to watch the film thereafter did so mainly out of curiosity as to what was so wrong with this film?

On the other hand, Piku is going great guns. Having had a lukewarm response with the opening day reporting a mere Rs 5.32 crore, the film went to double its opening day figures with Rs 11.2 crore on its first Sunday and continued the good run through the rest of the week till Thursday to put together a first week tally of Rs 41.42 crore. The film added another Rs 14.6 crore for its second week to take its 10-day total to Rs 56.02 crore.

Kuch Kuch Locha Hai saw poor collections of Rs 3.55 crore for its opening week.

Gabbar Is Back held well in face of little opposition and managed to collect a handsome Rs 18.1 crore in its second week to settle at Rs 74.5 crore after its second week run.

Margarita With A Straw added about Rs 15 lakh in its fourth week to take its four-week tally to Rs 5.95 crore.

  • ‘Piku’ peaks at box office; earns Rs 25.22 crore

‘Piku’ peaks at box office; earns Rs 25.22 crore

MUMBAI: The Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan starrer Piku might have started slow at the box office on Friday but interest was piqued amongst movie goers as it earned positive word of mouth. Piku managed to gain patrons during later shows on Friday. The movie’s wheels picked up additional “motion” on Saturday and Sunday.

The film improved by leaps and bounds with Rs 5.32 crore collections on Friday, Rs 8.7 crore on Saturday and Rs 11.2 crore on Sunday to take its opening weekend figure to Rs 25.22 crore.

Kuch Kuch Locha Hai proves a dud with no takers. Expecting Ram Kapoor and Sunny Leone to sell high priced tickets came as a cropper. The audience can’t be taken for granted with half-baked ideas. The film managed to collect just about Rs 2.4 crore in its first weekend.

Sabki Bajegi Band manages a meager Rs 20 lakh in its first week. Proves a disaster.

Gabbar Is Back backfires. The film is the worst among recent Akshay Kumar releases and the idea to cash in on famous Gabbar character from Sholay and its brand equity fails. The film stays afloat thanks to a four day weekend due to holidays collecting Rs 36.6 crore in its first four days but drops thereafter ending its first week with a total of Rs 56.4 crore.

Margarita With A Straw collects Rs 55 lakh in its third week to take its two week tally to Rs 5.8 crore.

  • ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ nets Rs 46 crore in five days

‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ nets Rs 46 crore in five days

MUMBAI: Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron has already created box office records across the globe with stupendous collections.

In India, the movie has seen collections of Rs 46 cores in its first five days’ run at the box office.

Trade sources claim that the film amassed approximately a Friday opening of Rs 10.98 crore coming after unprecedented advance openings and theater bookings. Saturday’s figures were pegged at Rs 11.85 crore net, whereas Sunday’s collections stood at Rs  13.17 crore taking the total three-day collection to Rs 35.74 crore.

The movie’s weekday collections have also been rock steady with a trade figure of Rs 5.4 crore on Monday and Rs 4.6 crore on Tuesday.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron saw a limited release of 1500 screens across India, lesser than Fast and Furious 7, which had 2500 screens.

‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ nets Rs 36 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron is on its path to break box office records with a record-breaking three day opening collections.

Trade and industry expert sources claim that the film, which opened to glowing critical reviews, amassed approximately a Friday opening of Rs 10.98 crores coming after unprecedented advance openings and theater bookings.

Saturday’s figures were pegged at Rs11.85 crores net, and adding to the grand tally was Sunday’s collection of Rs 12.91 crores taking the total three day collections to Rs 35.74 crores.

Trade experts peg this as the highest three-day Hollywood film box office collection till date in India and is almost three times bigger than 2012’s Avengers.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron’s box office performance was despite it being a non-holiday weekend. The movie saw a limited release on 1500 screens across India, which is lesser than Fast and Furious 7 that released across 2500 screens.

  • Sunny Leone fails to grab eyeballs at box office

Sunny Leone fails to grab eyeballs at box office

MUMBAI: It is sex over sermon and Sunny Leone scores over legendary actors Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah and Annu Kapoor as her first double role film, Ek Paheli Leela, scores over talent packed Dharam Sankat Mein.

Not that Ek Paheli Leela is great shakes. It remained on the lower side on Friday and failed to add to its opening day figures on Saturday. The film ended its first weekend with figures of Rs 11.2 crore mainly on the strength of its performance at single screens.

Dharam Sankat Mein lacked in the pre-release promotion and suffered on this count. The film had a poor opening despite stalwarts like Rawal, Shah and Malik in the cast. The comparison to Rawal’s trendsetting OMG: Oh My God was inevitable and Dharam Sanakat Mein fell short by miles besides the fact that quite a few films on the similar theme have followed OMG. The film gets a poor opening and barely manages to cross the Rs 1 crore-mark on its opening day and hardly improves on Saturday. The film has had a weekend of Rs 5.1 crore.

Barefoot To Goa stays out of contention as far as box office is concerned. Such group funded idealistic films need a commercial approach.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, another small film after Dum Laga Ke Haisha from Yash Raj Films, remains average. An indulgent film based on the WW2 era Bengali fictional character, the film falls prey to its mediocre content. It manages to collect Rs 19.97 crore for the first week. The film has added Rs 3.27 for its second weekend to take its two week tally to Rs 23.14 crore.

Barkhaa is a lost cause. The film fails to cross Rs 1 crore mark even after two weeks.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha has collected Rs 35 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week tally to Rs 30.32 crore.

NH10 added Rs 30 lakh in its fourth week to take its four-week total to Rs 30.5 crore.

Far from the days when English films released in India eons after their premiere release in the West, that too at one Metro at a time, Fast & Furious 7, released at multiple screens across India and opened to a bumper response.

The fact that the brand equity had been built over the years helped as did the ensemble star cast. The film collected better than many Hindi super star films in its first week with figures of about Rs 70 crore.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s foray into Hollywood cinema with Broken Horses, a rehash of his 1989 Hindi film Parinda, comes a cropper. The film has gone almost unnoticed in Indian cinemas.

  • ‘Furious 7’ clocks opening weekend collections of Rs 70 crore in India

‘Furious 7’ clocks opening weekend collections of Rs 70 crore in India

MUMBAI: Universal Pictures India release Fast & Furious 7, has created history at the Indian box office and has broken all time records.

Being the seventh installment of the franchise and Paul Walker’s last silver screen appearance, Fast & Furious 7 took an extraordinary opening, thus grossing the highest opening weekend collection for a Hollywood movie in India with Rs 70 crores. The movie was released in 2600 screens across the country.

The movie, which has been dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu opened to positive reactions from the audiences.

Universal Pictures India general manager Sarabjit Singh said, “Fast and Furious is undoubtedly one of the world’s biggest franchises. We expected huge numbers to come from India in the first weekend itself. This is a huge achievement for a Hollywood movie in India. Hopefully, the will continue to go strong and attract more audiences to the theatres in the coming weeks.”

  • Box Office: ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ sustains well

Box Office: ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ sustains well

MUMBAI: The week has been bad for the box office what with uninspiring content, lack of face value exam period adding to the misery.

Hunterrr fared poorly from day one with no hope of catching up over the weekend. The film managed a weak Rs 4.8 crore for its opening three days.

Dilliwali Zaalim Girlfriend is worse with no draw at all with title being a put off too. The film has collected Rs 1.7 crore.

NH10 is fair in absence of an opposition and riding on Anushka Sharma’s popularity as the lead. The film has collected Rs 19.85 crore in its first week.

Dirty Politics spells disaster ending its first week with a dismal Rs 30 lakh in its second week taking its two week total to Rs 6.5 crore.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha remains steady in its third week with figures of Rs 6.75 crore taking its three week total to Rs 25.7 crore. It further adds Rs 1.51 crore in its fourth weekend taking its 24 day total to Rs 27.21 crore.

Badlapur: Don’t Miss The Beginning collects Rs 95 lakh in its fourth week to take its total to Rs 48.65 crore.

  • ‘NH10’ collects Rs 12.8 crore in its opening weekend

‘NH10’ collects Rs 12.8 crore in its opening weekend

MUMBAI: Anushka Sharma’s debut as a part producer in NH10 and essaying a performance oriented, award seeking role, does not quite excite the moviegoer. A dark movie with the theme limited to a particular region and honour killing as the base, further affected by an ‘A’ certification, limits its audience, compounded by the exams period.

The film starts off with five to ten per cent occupancy at multiplexes with single screens’ occupancy being even poorer. NH10 improved over Saturday and Sunday to collect Rs 12.8 crore in its opening weekend.

Dirty Politics, which collected Rs 4.2 crore over its first weekend, barely managed to add another Rs 2 crore over the next four days to end its first week with Rs 6.2 crore.

Badmashiyaan proved to be a total disaster, managing to collect just about Rs 75 lakh in its first week.

Choreographer Ganesh Acharya’s production, Hey Bro, is rejected all around. The film fails to attract the audience and manages to collect just about Rs 1 crore in its first week.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha is the only film that stays afloat despite having a slow start. After performing better in its second weekend as compared to its first weekend, the film holds steady to collect Rs 8.32 crore in its second week thus taking its two week tally to Rs 18.96 crore. The film has emerged as the only wholesome family entertainer in quite some time.

Badlapur: Don’t Miss The Beginning adds Rs 3.6 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 47.7 crore.

‘American Sniper’ becomes highest-grossing film of 2014

MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ American Sniper has surpassed two more major milestones, emerging as the top-grossing domestic release of 2014. The film has also surpassed half a billion dollars worldwide, and still climbing.

To date, the film has grossed an estimated $337.2 million at the domestic box office, and still counting, making it the highest-grossing film in director Clint Eastwood’s long and illustrious career. Among its many other records, American Sniper is also the number one war movie of all time and the top-grossing film in the career of Bradley Cooper, who earned his third consecutive Oscar nomination, for his portrayal of the film’s title character, Chris Kyle.

In addition to its North American success, American Sniper is drawing large numbers of moviegoers overseas, where it is currently in release in 57 markets. The film, to date, has earned an estimated $163 million at the international box office, for an extraordinary worldwide total of $500.2 million and rising.

Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said, “From its record-breaking Christmas opening, American Sniper has been a box office phenomenon. The film’s A+ CinemaScore in every category has translated into enthusiastic word-of-mouth that continues to generate both first-time and repeat business. We could not be happier for Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and everyone on the incredible filmmaking team on this remarkable achievement.”

Warner Bros. Pictures president of worldwide marketing and international distribution Sue Kroll added, “American Sniper has become a cultural touchstone that people want to share, discuss and remember. We are thrilled that the movie is still filling theatres, not only in the United States but around the globe, as filmgoers everywhere experience the power of the story of Chris and Taya Kyle.”

“We are all so proud of American Sniper. Its box office success is not only a testament to the talents of Clint, Bradley and all those involved in the film, but also a measure of our appreciation for the sacrifices of all veterans and their families. Congratulations to our partners at Village Roadshow and Ratpac-Dune and everyone behind American Sniper on reaching another momentous benchmark,” said Warner Bros. Pictures president, creative development and worldwide production Greg Silverman.

Along with our partners at Village Roadshow, we couldn’t be more thrilled with these spectacular results.”
