    Box office: ‘Welcome Back’ rakes in Rs 50.2 crore in opening weekend

    MUMBAI: Welcome Back has clearly cashed in on its brand equity. However, it is not just the brand that has helped the film but its clean entertainer tag has made it generally acceptable. A zany comedy, it took an encouraging opening on Friday and, as expected, registered better figures on Saturday and Sunday on the strength of mouth publicity.

     

    The film belied trade estimates of about Rs 12 crore Friday at best and went on to collect over Rs 14 crore. The weekend tally stands at Rs 50.2 crore, which is healthy though the unnaturally high cost of the film’s making will always be hard to recoup.

     

    Phantom proves to be a dud at the box office. The film had decent figures to show only on its first Saturday it being a Raksha Bandhan holiday in parts of India. While collections remained static on the Sunday that followed, it started dropping drastically from Monday onwards and the Rs 33.2 crore weekend could not go beyond Rs 45.8 crore to show for the first week.

     

    Baaneky Ki Crazy Baraat proves to be a costly farce as the film sinks badly at the box office not even managing to cross a one crore mark in its first week stopping short at just about Rs 90 lakh.

     

    Kaun Kitney Paani Mein collects a poor Rs 30 lakh in its first week.

     

    Manjhi The Mountain Man holds well in its second week. Released on a limited screen engagement, the film adds Rs 2.8 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 12.25 crore.

     

    All Is Well proves a total disaster managing to put together just about Rs 40 lakh in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 14.3 crore.

     

    Brothers comes to the end of its not so impressive run with figures of Rs 65 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 77.35 crore.

     

    Drishyam collects another Rs 1.25 crore to take its five week total to Rs 81.2 crore.

     

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan collects Rs 50 lakh in its seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 317.85 crore.

     

    Bahubali: The Beginning (Hindi-Dubbed) adds Rs 70 lakh in its eighth week taking its eight week tally to Rs 109.3 crore.

    MUMBAI: Kabir Khan’s Phantom, starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif, has opened with poor response. The first day figures hover around a little over Rs 8 crore. However, the film showed a reasonable jump on day two with collections growing by about 35 per cent this being a solo release with the advantage of Raksha Bandhan holiday. The word of mouth still remained against the film as the Sunday collections failed to match Saturday figures. The film collects Rs 33.2 crore in its opening weekend.

     

    Kaun Kitney Paani Mein fails to make its presence felt at the box office.

     

    Baankke Ki Crazy Baraat flops badly.

     

    All Is Well fails to entertain with Rishi Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan playing out a poor script and a patchy production. The film had a miserable opening and got worse as the week progresses to end its first week with collection figures of Rs 13.9 crore.

     

    Manji – The Mountain Man matches the appreciation it earned from the critics and turns it to its advantage at the box office. The film collects a handsome Rs 9.45 crore in its first week.

     

    Brothers shrinks to as much as 10 per cent of its first week collections in its second week. The film collects Rs 7.15 crore to take its two week total to Rs 76.7 crore.

     

    Drishyam keeps box office ticking, though on a smaller scale. The film adds Rs 3.45 crore in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 79.95 crore.

     

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan begins its countdown on its last rounds collecting Rs 1.3 crore in its sixth week. With this the film’s six week total stands at Rs 317.35 crore.

     

    Bahubali (Hindi-Dubbed) adds Rs 1.4 crore in its seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 108.6 crore.

    MUMBAI: All Is Well was much promoted through its popular song, ‘Baaton ko teri.’ While the song became very popular, the film could not reap the benefits. Director Umesh Shukla’s past record of OMG: Oh My God seemed sort of neutralised as the film’s lead star, Abhishek Bachchan who has not been able to create an audience for himself yet.

     

    To add to the poor start was the film’s content, which was mediocre in all aspects. The film, which had a weak start, managed to rake in Rs 8.45 crore in its opening weekend.

     

    Ketan Mehta’s Manjhi: The Mountain Man, a biopic about a Bihar resident who decides to make life easier for his fellow villagers by carving out a road from a mountain after losing his wife due to delay in getting medical attention, has caught the fancy of the media and some discerning film lovers. The film has a story to tell about a selfless man and his determination. The film had a small volume opening but improved bit by bit to end its opening weekend with a reasonable Rs 5.85 crore.

     

    Brothers, despite limited appeal, managed to sustain through its first week showing no major drop in collection. However, the film still remains within the limits set by Akshay Kumar starrers, not breaking any box office barriers. After a fairly decent opening weekend of Rs 49.7 crore, the film has ended its first week with a total of Rs 69.55 crore.

     

    Gour Hari Dastaan, a biopic about a freedom fighter taking on the system to get recognition for his contribution to the movement, makes it to the on the also ran list. Finding no audience, the film has about Rs 25 lakh to show for its first week run.

     

    Drishyam remained steady in its third week holding on to appreciation found among a section of filmgoers. The film collected Rs 7.75 crore in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 66.50 crore.

     

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan continues to squeeze the box office, mainly on the strength of its repeat audience. The film has added Rs 3.6 crore in its fifth week to take its five week total to Rs 316.1 crore.

     

    Bahubali: The Beginning (Hindi – Dubbed) has collected Rs 3.05 crore in its sixth week, which takes its six week tally to Rs 107.2 crore.

    MUMBAI: Brothers faced negative reports and a below par opening on Friday. The film had average collections on Friday to show a marked improvement despite bad word of mouth on Saturday thanks to 15 August, the mandatory Independence Day holiday. However, the film’s lack of merit caught up with it soon enough and despite being a Sunday, the film took a drubbing at the box office. The collections dropped instead of growing on Sunday to end its opening weekend with Rs 49.7crore.

     

    Gour Hari Dastaan: The Freedom File is a biopic about a freedom fighter from a small town in Odisha who has contributed to India’s freedom struggle against the British rule. This film about the protagonist’s 32 year determined drive to earn recognition for his contribution from the authorities is rather personal, slow moving account and, hence, not the kind to impact the box office. Though appreciated on the international festival circuits, it has found scant patronage with the moviegoer. 

     

    Bangistan can be called a mediocre effort on all counts. With poor opening weekend, the movie continues with its poor run through its first week to end with collection figures of Rs 5.1 crore.

     

    Jaanisar fails to relive the era that the maker’s earlier film, Umrao Jaan created. The film met with total rejection at the box office as it completes its first week run.

     

    Drishyam fares reasonably well in week two in the absence of any strong opposition. There is a section of people who have positive things to say about the film, which helped it maintain in its second week. The film has collected Rs 17.45 crore to take its two week total to Rs 58.75 crore.

     

    Masaan collects Rs 35 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 3.8 crore.

     

    Bajrangi Bhaijaan establishes itself as among the biggest hits as it continued to hold sway even its fourth week to collect Rs 11.4 crore, taking its four week total to an unassailable Rs 312.85 crore. 

     

    Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi- Dubbed) also continues to draw people. The film added an impressive Rs 5.3 crore in its fifth week taking its five week total to Rs 104.15 crore.

    MUMBAI: Much touted, successful in its Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil versions, Drishyam carried some expectations in the trade but, with only Ajay Devgn in the top billing, the film could not draw the expected audience. Despite praise from the critics, word of mouth failed to do much for the film. 

     

    Drishyam opened at little over Rs 5 crore on Friday and, as expected, did show some improvement on Saturday and got better on Sunday. However, despite its economical making and saving on casting, the weekend figures had Rs 27.6 crore to show including paid previews on Thursday. This being not up to the mark, much will depend on how the film holds through the rest of the week.

     

    Masaan, critically acclaimed film as well as a Cannes awardee, could not do much at the box office. Awards of any kind don’t really matter to the Indian audience. The film collected a measly Rs 2.4 crore in its first week.

     

    On the other hand, Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan maintained a strong trend even in its second week. The film has become a rage all over and Khan’s docile character without action has found much appreciation. What’s more, the film’s climax has been winning the audiences’ hearts. The film added a fantastic Rs 87.2 crore in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 272.05 crore. 

     

    Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi-Dubbed) continues its strong run notwithstanding strong opposition from Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The film is already the highest grossing Hindi dubbed film ever and looking at the trend it will most likely also be the first dubbed film to make it to Rs 100 crore club. The film has collected Rs 21.7 crore in its third week, which is barely Rs 3 crore less than its second week. This takes the film’s three week total to Rs 87.95 crore.

    MUMBAI: While most films shy away from releasing immediately after a much expected blockbuster is released in theatres, the small but critically acclaimed film Masaan was bold enough to come in the week following the Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

     

    Masaan, despite being awarded at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, fails to make a mark at the box office as its very limited opening weekend footfalls show.

     

    After a weekend of over Rs 100 crore, Bajrangi Bhaijaan continued to cash in on post Eid revelries. The almost universal positive word of mouth also helped the film continue its record-breaking spree throughout its first week outperforming all top grossers of recent times. The film ended its first week with Rs 184.85 crore and went on to cross the Rs 200 crore mark on day nine.

     

    The film has an open week and will continue its march into the second week where it is expected to create more records, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

     

    Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi- Dubbed) maintains a strong trend in its second week despite strong opposition in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. At the same time, the film also benefitted from Eid celebrations as the Muslim audience throng the cinemas after a month of restraint due to Ramzan. The film collected Rs 24.7 crore in its second week to take its two-week total to Rs 66.25 crore.

     

    Having crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, which matter much to such controlled budget films, ABCD 2 comes to the end of its run adding Rs 10 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week total to Rs 105.05 crore.

    MUMBAI: The only release of the week, Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho finds no takers. A product of weird imagination, it sinks taking its crudity along.

     

    ABCD 2 sustains well through its first week catering to youth at elite multiplexes to collect Rs 71.15 crore. The film is enjoying open run sans opposition and should maintain steady run in its second week.

     

    Hamari Adhuri Kahani does okay in its second week by collecting Rs 4.45 crore to take its two week tally to Rs 30.95 crore.

     

    Dil Dhadakne Do added Rs 3.75 crore in its third week, taking its three week total to Rs 73.65 crore.

     

    Tanu Weds Manu weathers rains, heat and oppositions. The film has collected Rs 3.25 crore in its fifth week to take its five week tally to Rs 149.63 crore.

     

    Piku has added about Rs 10 lakh in its seventh week taking its seven week tally to Rs 80.02 crore.

     

    Sardarji, a Punjabi film released in Punjab, Delhi, Mumbai and a few other centres has proved to be another trailblazer from its superstar hero, Diljeet Dosanjh. The film has collected over Rs 8.5 crore in its opening weekend from India alone while also going strong in the overseas markets.

    MUMBAI: Youth and the growing fan following for young stars, Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, earned a positive welcome to ABCD 2 with a Rs 14.4 crore opening day. The film maintained similar figures on Saturday, not improving but also not dropping. With figures being the best at over Rs 17 crore, the film ended its opening weekend with Rs 45.5 crore. The film will have to sustain well through the week to justify its high cost. It has the advantage of three small films as oppositions next week.

     

    Hamari Adhuri Kahaani pays for being a depressing film with a poor script. Not designed to be an entertainer, the film does not even tug at one’s emotions. Having opened to a weak response, it stays that way to collect Rs 26.65 crore in its first week. The film dropped drastically in its second weekend.

     

    Dil Dhadakne Do has made the most of poor opposition and has managed to have some hold at the box office to collect Rs 15.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 69.9 crore.

     

    On the other hand, Tanu Weds Manu Returns maintains a strong trend holding its own with collection figures of Rs 8.25 crore in its fourth week to take its three week tally to Rs 146.38 crore.

     

    Piku collected Rs 15 lakh in its sixth week to take its six week total to Rs 79.92 crore, whereas Gabbar Is Back collected Rs 17 lakh in seventh week to take its seven week total to Rs 80.22 crore.

    MUMBAI: Vishesh Films and the men behind the banner, Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt are known to follow this sequence of one hit after a couple of flops. And, on that count as well as for the reason that Mahesh Bhatt had penned the script after a gap of almost a decade and a half, expectations were aplenty.

     

    However, Hamari Adhuri Kahani has come as a big disappointment with the film’s main culprits being the story and the scripting.

     

    What’s more, it is a totally regressive film for no reason and at an unjustifiable cost. For a change, critics as well as the audience seem to be on the same side on this one. The film has managed to collect Rs 15.8 crore for its opening weekend.

     

    Dil Dhadakne Do, a pretentious movie about a Delhi Punjabi family trying to put up a show of affluence despite dire situation, does not go well with the audience in general. The film finds patronage in few metros at select multiplexes. The film has many flaws and takes it audience for granted. It creates a number of tracks of various characters including a parallel love story but fails to sum them up in the end. The film has managed to put together Rs 54.4 crore for its first week thanks to lack of any challenging opposition and increased admission rates (which the distributor planned to continue throughout the week instead of the opening weekend as is the practice with major films but relented after the response to the film, which was weak). The film will scrap the bottom after its second weekend.

     

    Tanu Weds Manu Returns is the flavor of the season and the reason is Kangana Ranaut, the force behind the film with her captivating performance in a dual role. While the comparison to the first version may be unfair, which many feel was much better, this one will be five times bigger hit at the box office as things stand. Finally, the figures speak; opinions may differ. The film has an amazing third week befitting a Salman Khan starrer (or better) adding Rs 20.18 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 138.13 crore for three weeks.

    Piku adds Rs 1.05 crore in its week to take its five-week total to Rs 79.77 crore, whereas Gabbar Is Back collects Rs 30 lakh in its fifth week thus taking its five-week total to Rs 80.05 crore.

    MUMBAI: Dil Dhadakne Do, one of the most hyped movies in recent times, does not quite live up to the hype and the resultant expectations. The film, its script and the execution took the audience for granted, spinning the story of convenience ending with a grossly unsatisfactory climax.

     

    The film’s performance at the elite multiplex properties in metros gave it some face-saving figures with audience at the lower rung ’plexes and single screens keeping away. The film had a below average first day with day two improving marginally, while Sunday figures showed some promise. Dil Dhadakne Do ended its opening weekend with Rs 32.5 crore. The film will have to show a steady trend during rest of the week, which does not look likely from early Monday footfalls.

     

    A number of insignificant films, most of them made purely out of whims and fancies viz An Unfold Fact- Lateef, Ishquedarriyaan, Chaar Cutting and P Se PM Tak, find no takers managing to collect a couple of lakh each.

     

    Welcome To Karachi managed to add only Rs 1.7 crore in four days after its opening weekend plus Thursday paid previews to finish its first week with Rs 7.25 crore.

     

    Tanu Weds Manu Returns created new milestones as it crossed the celebrated Rs 100 crore mark within ten days of its release. It proves again: the eternal fact is that the Script is the King. The three films that worked this year, Dum Lagake Haisha, Piku and Tanu Weds Manu Returns prove the point. Tanu Weds Manu Returns collected Rs 48.1 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 117.95 crore.

     

    Piku held its own even in the fourth week as it went on to collect Rs 3.85 crore to take its four week tally to Rs 78.72 crore.

     

    Bombay Velvet ended its disastrous run in the third week with total collections of Rs 21.75 crore, whereas Gabbar Is Back added Rs 50 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 79.75 crore.
