Box Office: ‘Wazir’ takes in Rs 19.85 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: The Amitabh Bachchan – Farhan Akhtar starrer Wazir has received mixed word of mouth. A contrived revenge story on the done to death topic – Kashmir terrorism theme – the film manages to survive thanks to its solo release status after a three week draught of new releases. The survival, however, remains at the lower side.

The film managed to collect Rs 5.5 crore on day one, adding a bit more on Saturday and Sunday. However, Monday saw the figures dropping. The film collected Rs 19.85 crore for the opening weekend.

Chauranga, an outdated, boring and unpalatable film finds no takers as expected.

Dilwale collected Rs 10.5 crore in its third week. The collections may be attributed to the open run with no opposition. This takes the film’s three week total to Rs 137.2 crore. This is not going to be enough for the film and its distributors to cover their investment.

Bajirao Mastani gets the better advantage of a free run for three weeks, mostly thanks to the social media, and puts together Rs 26.5 crore in its third week. This takes the film’s three week tally to Rs 158.6 crore. However, the film is nowhere near recovering its extra high production cost.

  • Box Office: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo revenue drops after extended weekend

Box Office: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo revenue drops after extended weekend

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, after taking a record breaking opening on Thursday, since it was released a day earlier to take advantage of Diwali weekend, started dropping from the very next day. The general lack of appreciation for the film led to huge come down in footfalls. So much so that after the four days of its extended weekend, the film could barely add only as much as its first day figures for rest of the four days Monday on wards which is little over Rs 40 crore. The film managed Rs 172 crore for the eight day week. The film is not likely to get the advantage of its open run in the second week and could end up as a loss maker at the box office. (Refer Editor’s note below)

*X Past is Present, the collaborative effort of 11 film makers is a nonstarter.

*Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein added 1.8 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to about Rs 82 lakh.

*Main Aur Charles collected 1.7 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 6.67 crore.

*Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 has added 40 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week tally to RS 61.55 crore.

Editor’s note: Considering that it cost an estimated Rs 115 crore to make and market Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, it must rake in around Rs 230 crore at the Box Office before it can even break even. It must make a profit for all the stakeholders, which include satellite rights revenue for Salman Khan who reportedly has not charged anything to make the film, and the music rights revenue that will reportedly go to film’s makers.. Just crossing the Rs 100 crore or Rs 200 crore mark at the Box Office does not qualify a film as a profit maker.

  • Box Office: ‘Main Aur Charles’ collects Rs 3.65 crore; ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ holds fort

Box Office: ‘Main Aur Charles’ collects Rs 3.65 crore; ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ holds fort

MUMBAI: The pre-Diwali period, considered to be dullest ever at the box office, used to be the exhibitor’s nightmare. The running time was fed with dubbed films or re-run films. The idea was to just minimise the loss.

Come corporate era, no period is considered dull. This Friday, 30 October saw numerous releases; unheard of films with no promotion worth its name. Of course, all to disastrous results.

Among all releases of the week, Main Aur Charles was the most publicised, boasted of known faces in the cast and also went on to bag favourable reviews. Yet, it was the best example of a mis-timed release. A film, which would have ended its opening day with over Rs 3 crore to improve on days to follow, managed barely a crore. Nothing better came its way on Saturday and Sunday that followed. The film ended its opening weekend with approximately Rs 3.65 crore.

On the other hand, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 is enjoying an excellent run at the box office, on its own merit as well as some help from poor new releases. The film is a favourite with the youth. It has had an impressive second week with figures of Rs 14.1 crore taking its two week total to Rs 51.9 crore.

Guddu Ki Gun, a curious kind of film, which tries to create comedy out of a silly idea about a young man’s vitals turning to gold, falls flat. The only use the film will have is for future producers troubled by the Film Certification Board, to cite it as a precedent. The film managed about Rs 1.7 crore for the opening weekend.

Despite critical reviews and a strong word of mouth from the industry, Dibakar Bennerjee’s home production, Titli, is a disaster.

Other nondescript adventures like Love ExchangeOnce Upon A Time In BiharMere Sai Ram and The Last Horror fail to find audience.

Shaandaar collections go on a free fall in its first week after an indifferent opening weekend. The film suffers many cancelled shows due to lack of audience as the week progresses. A sheer waste of good star cast and ample funding thanks to a juvenile script and an unimaginative making. The film, which did its best in its four day opening weekend, managed to add a meagre Rs 6.1 crore for the four days after the weekend to show a poor Rs 36.9 crore for its first week. The film may add a crore or so at best for the rest of its run.

Jazbaa collects Rs 20 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 23.9 crore.

Singh Is Bliing adds Rs 10 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 74.05 crore.

Talvar collects about a crore in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 30.55 crore.

  • Box Office: ‘Shaandaar’ collects Rs 30.8 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘Shaandaar’ collects Rs 30.8 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: The Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Shaandaar fails to find the approval of moviegoers. The film, an attempt to blend comic book approach with a fairytale setting, seems to take the audience and its intelligence for granted and meets with ready rejection.

Opening on Thursday to cash in on the major National holiday of Dussehra and enjoying the solo release status, its opening day collections of around Rs 11 crore leave much to be desired. The first day audience’s disappointment reflected at the box office on Friday as the collections dropped by over 30 per cent showing further decline on Saturday and Sunday to end its four day opening weekend with figures of Rs 30.8 crore.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 was lapped up by the youth it being a romantic comedy catering to the young lot. That the film enjoyed certain brand equity because of earlier film, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, which was a reasonable success, also helped the sequel. Despite the film following a similar theme and gags as the previous version, the film did not fail to entertain. After a strong opening weekend of Rs 20.8 crore, the film held steady through the week to end its first week with figures of Rs 37.8 crore.

The film will enjoy a lucrative second week as it enjoys a favourable word of mouth while also benefiting from poor opposition from the new release of the week, Shaandaar.

Wedding Pullav faces total rejection. The film manages to collect a poor Rs 50 lakh for its first week.

Other minor films, released without any promotion, go unnoticed. The films are: Chinar Daastaan-E-IshqBumper DrawHogaya Dimaagh Ka DahiPrivate Teacher and Jaatiwad.

Jazbaa drops to about 10 per cent of its first week figures, which in itself was poor. The film adds Rs 3.1 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 23.7 crore.

Singh Is Bliing collects Rs 1.3 crore in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 73.95 crore.

Talvar remains strong despite new releases. It braves all oppositions. On a strong public appreciation, the film returns impressive figures in its third week. It adds Rs 3.55 crore to take its three week tally to Rs 29.55 crore.

Speculative media reports caused Wells Fargo downgrade: Eros

BENGALURU: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) listed Eros International Media lost nearly 20 per cent of its market value on Monday on the back of American multinational banking and financial services holding company Wells Fargo downgrading its parent company Eros International Plc, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Reacting to a notice from the bourses about the downgrade by Wells Fargo, Eros International Media (Eros) held speculative media reports responsible.

Eros said that analysts downgrade or upgrade stocks regularly and ‘as such that is not a cause for much concern’. Also, the company has responded by pointing out in its reply that Wells Fargo did not revise their own earnings estimate for the quarter or the year end and their price target is $22, well above the price the stock was trading the date it was published. Eros claims in its response that another analyst from Macquire-Tim Nollen, published a very positive report and maintained outperform rating with a $25 target, on the same day as the Wells Fargo report that was published on 23 October, 2015.

Eros’ response to the bourses goes onto assure its shareholders that the company’s fundamentals are strong and there have been no material changes in the previous announced fundamentals. “We continue to be market leaders in the Indian film industry with a dominant share in the global Indian box office. Our library of over 2000 films continues to be of a unique competitive advantage, which we monetise in conjunction with our new release slate of 65-70 films comprising Hindi and regional languages each year, across theatrical, television and digital and ancillary distribution platforms which constitute our diversified revenue streams,” the company said.

The company added that its Q1 results have been strong and nothing materially has changed since then, in fact a further string of hits by the company such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Q2. Eros’ Q2 results, which are to be announced towards mid-November, will be strong and will be another opportunity for the company to answer further questions regarding all aspects of its operations and finances during that earnings call.

The response to the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) has been signed by Eros company secretary and compliance officer Dimple Mehta.

At the end of the day’s trade on the BSE, Eros International Media’s stock was down 19.11 per cent to close at Rs 354.40 as compared its Friday close of Rs 438.10. On Monday, the stock opened at Rs 418.80 but saw a drop as word of the Wells Fargo downgrade spread. The stock reached an intra-day low of Rs 351.

On NYSE, shares of the parent company Eros International Plc, which has a market cap of $842.9 million, too have been losing ground over the last one week. As of 23 October, the company’s shares were down 45 per cent to $14.65 in one week on NYSE.

  • Box Office: ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ takes Rs 21 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ takes Rs 21 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: ‘It is the season for small budget comedies be it about romance or sex. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 appeals hugely to youth and proves that a film has to be youth oriented for they are the ones who guarantee a decent opening at the box office and also spread good or bad word of mouth.

Despite very limited promotions, the film took an impressive opening and the figures reflect the fact. The film only showed a marked rise in collections on Saturday and Sunday. And, despite being Navratri period, which is not the best of times for a new release, especially one counting mainly on its youth appeal. The film collected a heartening Rs 20.8 crore in its opening weekend.

Wedding Pullav is poor and failed to get footfalls through its opening weekend.

On the other hand, Jazbaa, a comeback film for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after a five year break and an expected hat-trick for Irrfan Khan, who has given two much appreciated films in Piku andTalvar, falls prey to its bad scripting and inapt handling. The film could not sustain its collection after its opening weekend and the figures dropped through the week. The film could manage to put together just Rs 20.6 crore for its first week.

Singh Is Bliing loses the plot in its second week with the collections dropping by a major chunk as the film collects Rs 10.5 crore to take its two week total to Rs 72.65.

Talvar maintains a strong trend in its second week cashing in on the appreciation received. The film collects Rs 10.5 crore to take its two week tally to Rs 26 crore.

Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon has added Rs 75 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 43.95 crore making a star out of the TV comedian in the process.

  • Box Office: ‘Jazbaa’ collects Rs 14.4 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘Jazbaa’ collects Rs 14.4 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Jazbaa, based on the Korean film, Seven Days, is a story that could have been told in a undeviating manner. However, between adhering to the original and Indianising it is ‘lost in translation.’ The film, which is being touted as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback film, opened to a meek response at the box office on Friday. However, it improved a great deal on Saturday in comparison to its opening day figures but remained static on Sunday. Jazbaa ended its opening weekend with Rs 14.4 crore, though its real standing will be determined only over next four days after the weekend.

While the film had the advantage of being the one and only release for the week, it had little competition from last week’s two releases,Singh Is Bliing and Talvar. While the first one started losing steam from its first Monday onwards, Talvar has a moderate following and continues to do well within its parameters it posed no threat to Jazbaa after its seven day run.

Talvar, another version of the Noida murder of a 14 year old girl, Arushi Talwar, allegedly by her own parents, generated some amount of curiosity and attracted a decent amount of footfalls. Considering its limited range, the film did fairly well to close its first week with a reasonable Rs 15.5 crore. The powerful media group, one of the makers of this film, is making sure it remains in the news or, to put it fairly, in controversy, so that the film adds a crore or two everyday even in its week two! The film maintained well during its second weekend.

Singh Is Bliing started off well but lost momentum from day two and even further from the first Monday after its release. This action comedy saw the female lead star, Amy Jackson, performing better action than the hero and action star Akshay Kumar, whose action scenes were lame and oft seen before. Akshay’s films have a limit till how much they can score at the box office and this one will stop short of even that limit. The film added Rs 19.75 crore in its four days after a decent weekend to show a figure of Rs 62.15 crore for its first week.

Kapil Sharma’s debut movie vehicle Kis Kisko Payar Karoon maintained well in its second week by collecting Rs 5.1 crore to take its two week total to Rs 43.2 crore.

On the other hand, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Calendar Girls crashes to a meagre Rs 10 lakh collections in its second week to show a tally of Rs 5.2 crore. A major loser.

  • Box Office: ‘Singh Is Bliing’ collects Rs 44.4 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘Singh Is Bliing’ collects Rs 44.4 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Singh Is Bliing, an action comedy, gets Akshay Kumar his biggest opening day yet as Friday being a major all India holiday for Gandhi Jayanti. However, the clean sweep on Friday cost the film’s Saturday footfalls as the collections dropped by about 30 per cent. With Sunday being better, the film ended its opening weekend with Rs 44.4 crore.

Talvar earned much appreciation and positive press and despite getting odd show timings, managed a decent paid preview and Friday response. The film, in fact added to its collections on Saturday by word of mouth. With a decent Sunday to add to its kitty, the film collected Rs 9.2 crore in its first weekend.

Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyar Karu was director duo Abbas Mustan’s foray into comedy genre. The film maintained very well through rest of the week after an impressive weekend. It collected Rs 38.1 crore in its first week.

Calendar Girls, Madhur Bhandarkar’s personal formula film, mainly about scandalous content and counting on exploiting woman anatomy, falls flat on its face. The film is slated to have cost four times it should have and promises to be a major loser. After a poor opening weekend of Rs 3.8 crore, it had even poorer run through rest of the week adding a meagre Rs 1.3 crore for the first week tally of Rs 5.1 crore.

Bhaag Johnny manages a poor Rs 1.9 crore for its first week. Time Out’s collections are very poor, whereas Katti Batti collects Rs 1.95 crore in its second week taking its two week tally to Rs 23.45 crore.

Welcome Back added Rs 40 lakh in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 94.3 crore.

  • Box Office: ‘Hero’ collects Rs 20 crore in its opening weekend

Box Office: ‘Hero’ collects Rs 20 crore in its opening weekend

MUMBAI: The Sooraj Pancholi – Athiya Shetty starrer Hero does not work despite high promotion and solo release status. A botched up job, the film suffers from poor scripting followed by equally poor direction and lacking support from its musical score.

The film opened with below average response and managed low collections on day one. While the collections failed to improve on Saturday, it managed to marginally pick up on Sunday. The film collected Rs 20.15 crore in its opening weekend and will find it tough to sustain through the week.

Welcome Back does well in its first week thanks to its good opening weekend. The weekdays thereafter showed a marked decline. However, the film collects Rs 73.1 crore in its first week. The film stands to gain from poor opposition in its second week but may still have to struggle to make it to the Rs 100 crore mark.

Phantom drops to about 10 per cent of its first week collection and adds just Rs 4.1 crore in its second week, which takes its two week tally to Rs 49.9 crore.

Manji: The Mountain Man collects Rs 45 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 12.7 crore. The film’s box office run has practically come to an end.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan collected Rs 25 lakh in its eighth week taking its total box office collections to Rs 318.1 crore.

Bahubali: The Beginning (Hindi-Dubbed) collected Rs 30 lakh in its ninth week taking its nine week total to Rs 109.6 crore.
