Box Office: Housefull 3 – decent collection

MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar’s films have a safe selling price because of which they also have a safe recovery target. Most of his films fold up within the hundred crore mark save for a couple.

Houseful 3 has been panned by our critics who will praise the similar Dumb & Dumber or The Nice Guys of the similar genre. Houseful 3 is an entertainer even if branded a no brainer. The public has been deprived of a mass entertainer catering to all sort of audience for over three months because of which the film has had a decent opening. It has maintained well and the collections saw a huge leap on Sunday to end its opening weekend with Rs 53.25 crore.

The collections will affected from tomorrow onwards as Ramadan sets in.

    Project Marathwada was poor.

Waiting, despite Naseeruddin Shah in the lead, has failed to stir up any interest in the audience. The film has managed to collect barely Rs 1.9 crore in its first week.

Phobia, a kind of thriller laced with horror, collected Rs 2.95 crore in its first week.

Veerappan, did better finding some support from single screen mass cinemas. The film collected Rs 6.75 crore in its first week.

Fredrick went down as a total loss project.

Sarbjit collected Rs 6.65 crore in its second week to take its two week tally to Rs 26.05 crore.
Azhar added Rs 30 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 31.95 crore.

Baaghi has added Rs 20 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week total to Rs 78.25 crore.

  • Fan fans a disastrous box office week

Fan fans a disastrous box office week

MUMBAI: This has been a disastrous week at the box office with exhibitors taking a big hit. This comes soon after the setback as they were made to pay high MGs and advances for Fan which they could not recoup. The three small time films released this week, Laal Rang, Nil Battey Sannata and Santa Banta Pvt Ltd have been rejected outright with their collections limited to a few lakhs each day of their opening weekend. Sadly for the exhibitors, they have nothing to curtail the shows of these films, as is done usually, with other films such as Jungle Book has. Fan is in its third week and limited footfalls, would have no takers anymore, since its collections went only downhill from the fourth day onwards.

Nil Battey Sannata had a title that went over one’s head, these titles fail to tell a prospective viewer what is in the offing. The film has merit and was also exempted from paying entertainment tax in Delhi and UP state. If other states also grant it exemption, as it deserves to, it will be too late to help the film. The film could not put together even Rs one crore for its opening weekend.

The makers may, however, take solace from the fact that, having been shot entirely in UP, this low budget film’s investment would be assured from the subsidy scheme of the UP government.

Laal Rang drew a few hundred more footfalls over others due to Randeep Hooda in the lead, yet remained in the  Rs one crore range over the weekend. Hooda does not yet enjoy the status to assure a multi crore opener.

Santa Banta Pvt Ltd may well be the frontrunner for the status of the year’s worst, amateurish and juvenile film. To add to its problems, the film was withdrawn from many cinema halls due to the Sikh community protesting against defamatory and derogatory projection of the community.

The Jungle Book continued to do roaring business. The film has added an impressive Rs 46.8 core in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 120.8 crore. The trend for the third week is steady.

Fan, which had a reasonable opening on day one, it being a national holiday, started dropping from day two and three, failing to add the weekend audience. However, the drop from Monday onwards for rest of the four days was rather steep. The film could add about 30 per cent for the next four days to its three day opening weekend collections to end its first week with Rs 71.5 crore with the second weekend adding another Rs 7.75 crore.

KI & Ka added Rs 1.45 crore. The film’s three week tally stands at Rs 50.65 crore.
Kapoor & Sons collected Rs 20 lakh in its fifth week, taking its five week total to Rs 72.1 crore.

Poor films help ‘Neerja’ fly at box office with Rs 34.2 crore

MUMBAI: This has proved to be a disastrous week. A numerous non-descript films released, which found some sort of play time at multiplexes but did not manage to find an audience.

The much hyped Aligarh from Hansal Mehta comes a cropper. A real life incident of an Aligarh Muslim University professor caught in a sting with his pants down with another male, offered nothing new to the viewers to attract them to the cinema halls. Film experience is certainly not about showing skeletons in the cupboard of a man. The film had very poor response on day one, day two as well as day three to show collections of Rs 1.2 crore for its opening weekend.

The other noticeable release of the week, Tere Bin Laden: Dead Or Alive, emerged as a poor attempt at 1960s American humour. The film lacked on all counts including, mainly, on gags. Direction was poor. What is it with Laden character spewing native Punjabi twang and English dialogue having English sub-titles?  The film has managed to collect Rs 1.95 crore for its first weekend.

Other releases like Bollywood Diaries, Love Shagun, Rhythm, Jab Tum Kaho and Dhara 302, passed as unnoticed as they came.

Loveshudha, a second attempt to launch Girish Taurani, fails miserably. The film opens with no audience, no show and somehow manages to end its first week with a figure of Rs 2.2 crore.

Weak oppositions helped much appreciated Neerja hold well as it ended its first week with a total of Rs 34.2 crore. The film’s good run continued as the new releases also happened to be poor and Neerja enjoyed a healthy second weekend.

Sanam Re adds Rs 1.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 28.1 crore.

Fitoor adds Rs 75 lakh in its second week thus taking its two week tally to Rs 17.9 crore.

Ghayal Once Again collects Rs 75 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to Rs 35.7 crore.

Airlift adds Rs 1.1 crore in its fifth week to take its five week total to Rs 125.7 crore.

Box Office: ‘Airlift’ collects Rs 44.24 crore; ‘KKHH 3’ does Rs 17 crore biz

MUMBAI: The Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift earned a lot of appreciation and also grew gradually at the box office. Starting its opening day with moderate collections, the film fared well on day two and three thanks to positive word of mouth. Being a partly dry theme and part documentary, the film is doing remarkably well.

Kumar’s films have a limit when it comes to collections but, then, his films also always have manageable budgets. The film has collected Rs 44.24 crore in its opening weekend. The Republic Day eve as well as the Republic Day holiday should help while the severe cold temps in the North may also affect early morning as well as night shows to an extent.

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 caters to a certain kind of audience and, which does not include multiplex patrons. This limits its reach. The film collects merely Rs 17.2 crore in its opening weekend, which does no justice to the price that was demanded for distribution rights.

On the other hand, Wazir did okay in absence of oppositions in its second week by collecting Rs 8.25 crore taking its two week total to Rs 36.65 crore. However, with two new releases last Friday, the film crashes badly.

Dilwale has virtually come to the end of its run after five weeks. Adding just Rs 60 lakh for the fifth week, the film’s five week tally now stands at Rs 139.35, which is way below the expected mark.

Bajirao Mastani is still finding patrons and has added Rs 4.5 crore in its fifth week, taking its five week tally to Rs 170.4 crore, which is not enough yet to cover its huge making cost.
