Indian box office lost more than Rs 15,000 cr in 2020-21: Ormax Media

Mumbai: The Indian box office lost more than Rs 15,000 crore to the pandemic in the year 2020 and 2021, according to Ormax Media’s ‘The Ormax Box Office Report 2020-21’ released on Monday. The report looks at the Indian box office across languages, highlighting key trends in the theatrical sector. Because of theatres being shut for several months during the pandemic, Ormax Media has released a combined edition for the two pandemic-impacted years (2020 and 2021).

Footfalls came down from 103.0 crore in 2019 to 22.5 crore and 42.7 crore in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Among other findings, the Telugu language industry commanded a maximum share at the box office at 29 per cent. Hindi’s share fell from 44 per cent to 27 per cent.

Compared to the gross box office of almost Rs 11,000 crore in 2019, the cumulative revenue across 2020 and 2021 put together stood at only Rs 5,757 crore (an annual average of less than Rs 2,900 crore). If 2019 is taken as the benchmark, the Indian film industry lost at least Rs 15,000 crore at the box office because of the pandemic.

“The pandemic has severely impacted the Indian box office, with five out of the eight quarters in 2020 and 2021 having zero or negligible business because of theatres being shut in all or most parts of India,” said Ormax Media founder and CEO Shailesh Kapoor. “The good news is that the last quarter of 2021 (Oct-Dec) saw an excellent recovery, registering gross box office of more than Rs 2,000 crore, which reaffirms that the theatrical business is very much here to say.”

The pandemic years also saw significant changes in the share of different language industries within the Indian film industry. With 29 per cent share of the box office (2020 and 2021 cumulative), the Telugu language industry took the top position, ahead of Hindi, whose share declined from 44 per cent to 27 per cent.

Four Telugu films (“Pushpa,” “Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo,” “Sarileru Neekevvaru,” and “Vakeel Saab”) feature in the top 10 films across the two years, compared to only three Hindi films (“Tanhaji,” “Sooryavanshi” and “83”). “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Hollywood), “Master” and “Darbar” (both Tamil) complete the top 10 list.

Speaking about Southern languages’ growing share of box office partner – Ormax Media Gautam Jain stated, “The cumulative share of the four South languages went up from 36 per cent in 2019 to 59 per cent in 2020 & 2021, highlighting how these industries managed to navigate through the pandemic with more relative success than Hindi films. While we can expect Hindi cinema to stage a recovery in 2022, the rise of South cinema is a story to watch out for.”

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ leaps to box office success amid Omicron concerns

Los Angeles: No one could be surprised that ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ would be one of this year’s box office biggest heroes but it’s spinning its way to becoming the best December domestic opening with $253 million, the best ever for Sony and the third best-ever among all films beating 2015’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ domestic opening of $247.9 million.

The film, released exclusively in theatres, is attracting enthusiastic moviegoers with record-breaking support in the US. This is big news for theaters whose continued existence seems under constant threat due to the sustained Covid-19 pandemic.

American Multi-Cinema (AMC) announced Friday that roughly 1.1 million moviegoers attended the opening night of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in the US, making it the highest-grossing opening night for a December title in AMC’s history. Cinemark called the film’s debut its “best opening night of all time.” And Regal said the film became its second-highest Thursday box office title in its history and shattered records for IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, and RPX formats.

Worldwide, the film, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, is crushing box office records — with this weekend’s global $587.2 million tally, it ranks as the third-biggest worldwide debut in history behind “Avengers: Endgame” (a historic $1.2 billion) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($640 million). Notably, the top two films opened in China, which is currently the world’s biggest movie-going market, while ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has yet to secure a release date there.

In India, the movie continues to keep the Indian box office buzzing. In just three days, the film has managed to cross the Rs 100 crore mark beating other Bollywood films. The much-awaited superhero action film was released on 16 December across 3,264 screens in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu versions.

“This weekend’s historic ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ results, from all over the world and in the face of many challenges, reaffirm the unmatched cultural impact that exclusive theatrical films can have when they are made and marketed with vision and resolve,” said Sony’s Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman as reported in Variety. “All of us at Sony Pictures, are deeply grateful to the fabulous talent, both in front of and behind the camera, that produced such a landmark film. Thanks to their brilliant work, this Christmas everyone can enjoy the big screen gift of 2021’s mightiest Super Hero — your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Credit should also be given to Marvel itself for amping up the prestige of this sequel and fueling fans’ anticipation for months. Directed by Jon Watts, the third chapter in Holland’s trilogy takes place after Peter Parker’s identity is revealed to the world, upending the lives of his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya), his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), and his aunt May (Marisa Tomei).

Critics have embraced ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, describing the film as a “satisfying meta-adventure.” Audiences have been equally receptive; the movie secured an “A+” CinemaScore and a 99 per cent Rotten Tomatoes average.

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ delivered a particularly strong turnout in western Europe, led by the United Kingdom. In the UK, ticket sales reached $41.4 million during its extended five-day opening to notch the fourth-biggest debut ever in that market. The film opened in France with $17.8 million, Italy with $13 million, Germany with $11.4 million, and Spain with $10.4 million. In eastern Europe, Russia led with $17.4 million, followed by Ukraine ($2.4 million) and Turkey ($1.4 million).

Latin American countries webbed up $79.5 million in total, with Mexico’s five-day tally hitting $32.4 million, the country’s highest of all time. Argentina also recorded its best box office debut with $6.8 million, as did Ecuador with $3.7 million.

In Asia, the movie notched the largest tally in South Korea ($23.7 million), followed by Hong Kong ($6.3 million). Other notable markets include Saudi Arabia ($5.2 million), Israel ($2.7 million), and New Zealand ($2.3 million).

Ormax Media relaunches film campaign tracking and box office forecasting tool Ormax Cinematix

MUMBAI: With the audience slowly returning to movie theatres post the Covid2019 pandemic, media consulting firm Ormax Media has announced the relaunch and expansion of its film campaign tracking and box office forecasting tool Ormax Cinematix (OCX). OCX was launched in 2010 for the Hindi film industry, and expanded to cover the Hollywood sector in India in 2014. In its new avatar, OCX will track theatrical films in nine language, namely Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi and Bengali.

OCX uses consumer research across India to measure the performance of upcoming film releases on three parameters: Buzz, Reach & Appeal. A statistical model uses these parameters to estimate the First-Day Box Office (FBO), a forecast of the opening day collections of all the films being tracked by the tool. Over the last few years, FBO has established itself as a highly credible currency in the film industry, with 83% accuracy since 2018.

With the expansion to regional languages, Ormax Media has reiterated its focus on regional content. Earlier this year, the company had extended its television character popularity tracking tool Ormax Characters India Loves to Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali GEC categories.

Ormax Media founder & CEO Shailesh Kapoor said, “Ormax Cinematix has been an industry benchmark for the Hindi film industry for more than a decade, and is used by studios to take key business decisions related to marketing, distribution and acquisition of films. With an expansion into nine languages, the tool will now be available for producers across India. This expansion reiterates our commitment towards increasing our focus on language markets in India in 2021”.

OCX has been the film industry’s go-to tool for first-day box office forecasts over the last decade. At the time the tool hit the pause button in March 2020 when theatres were closed due to the lockdown, more than 30 studios and producers were subscribers of the tool, including Yash Raj Films, Dharma Productions, Disney, Viacom 18, Sony Pictures, T-Series, Zee Studios, Balaji Telefilms and Excel Entertainment, among others.

Ormax Media partner Gautam Jain added,  “Pan-India films, which cut across languages, are an emerging trend. This year itself will see several films that will travel across languages, such as KGF Chapter 2, Radhe Shyam and RRR. Ormax Cinematix needed a multi-language expansion to keep up with this trend. With nine languages being covered now, we are confident that our first-day box office (FBO) forecast numbers will be as looked forwarded to by producers, directors and actors in the regional markets, as they have been by those in Bollywood”.

  • No value for money

    No value for money

While the demonetisation affected film collections to an extent, the dropping temperatures are also affecting box office, especially in the North India, not to speak of poor quality of films made with no concern for content.

*Befikre did raise some expectations within the exhibitor community as well as the audience. Coming as it does after a prolonged dull period and a lineup of poor films, the combination of Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra’s direction after eight year gap and Ranveer Singh’s growing popularity meant value for money, scarce as it may be nowadays.

The film did not quite meet up with the expectations as it met with mixed reactions the first Friday first show onwards. The film lacked a clear concept as the whole length of the titles were attributed to couples kissing, not sparing even the toddlers from the act. The rest turned out to be a misplaced idea of the life of today’s youth; being in Paris can’t be an excuse for going berserk with youth in a relationship.

However, what helps the film is its controlled budget and the release period enjoying both, a solo release status as well as an additional holiday today (Eid E Milad). The film had fair number of footfalls on Friday early shows but showed a declining trend thereafter as the first day figure barley managed to cross double figure of Rs 10 crore. Saturday added over a crore compared to Friday figures while the Sunday sustained well as the film closed its opening weekend with Rs 34.35 crore..

*Kahaani 2, a poor attempt to use the title and the face of Vidya Balan from the successful franchise, Kahaani, backfires as the sequel turns the very character of Vidya topsy-turvy. The rest of the content also lacks coherence.

With an opening weekend of Rs 15.8 crore, the film adds only a little more in the remaining four days to end its first week with a total of Rs 23.8 crore. The film stands to lose at the box office.

*Dear Zindagi will be a losing proposal for its India theatrical distributor. The combined following of the rising star Alia Bhatt and the veteran star Shah Rukh Khan fails to work as the theme of the film as well as the pretentious approach don’t go down well with the audience.

The film adds Rs 14.1 crore in its second week to take its two week total to about Rs 58.3 crore.

  • Box Office: Demonetisation adds to sequel woes

Box Office: Demonetisation adds to sequel woes

MUMBAI: Attempts to cash in on the trend of sequels is not working. In most cases, the sequel has nothing to do with the original, content-wise and, when there is some connection, the content is poor. Both the releases of the week, Rock On II and Chaar Sahibzaade: Rise Of Banda Singh Bahadur, are sequels.

Both have met with a miserable fate at the box office. There was an added factor of the demonetization of the currency notes of Rs 500 and 1,000 which affected all businesses including cinema which is not really a priority in such a situation. The situation may even lead to the postponement of one or two films due for release soon.

*Rock On II, sequel to the 2008 film Rock On, lacked in just about every department, be it script, content, romance and, mainly, music; not a single song worth humming considering this is a musical. With all these aspects being poor, the film’s length of 139 minute becomes telling on the viewer.

The film had a poor opening on day one, showed little improvement on Saturday as well as on Sunday ending its first weekend with Rs 6.2 crore. The number of shows per screen have been reduced today onwards.

*Chaar Sahibzaade: Rise Of Banda Singh Bahadur (3-D: Animation) takes forward the story of the merciless killing of four sons of Guru Gobind Sikh, the tenth Sikh Guru. The Guru decides to end the tradition of guru and, instead, appoints one of his disciples, Banda Singh, to carry out certain tasks to safeguard the sect. Rather than get to the story, the film takes too much time getting into repeating the story from the first part and, a 134 minute animation film is stretching it thin.

The film fell much short of its first part and the collections remained in lakhs through the weekend.

*Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, with nil opposition, managed to collect Rs 20.4 crore in its second week taking its two week total to Rs 98.6 crore.

*Shivaay managed to rake in Rs 16.4 crore in its second week as the film’s vigorous promotion continued and there were no major releases for a choice for the moviegoer. The film takes its two week tally to Rs 81.5 crore.
