    ‘Monsters University’ still tops box office, ‘The Heat’ knocks out ‘White House Down’

    MUMBAI: Monsters University retains the North American box office throne. The Billy Crystal-starring movie about the college life of Mike Wazowski and Suley Sullivan bagged an estimated $46.2 million in its second run for Walt Disney Pictures, a 44 per cent drop from last weekend‘s opening.

    Paul Feig helmed The Heat stands at No. 2 in its first week with approximately $40 million. The reason for the Sandra Bullock starrer doing well has been attributed to it being marketed well. Sony Pictures‘ White House Down, meanwhile, debuts to an estimated $25.7 million in the fourth place. Despite the disappointing result, the action-heavy movie starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx is expected to still play well over the next few weeks.

    World War Z, the zombie flick starring Brad Pitt, drops 55 per cent to approximately $29.8 million in its second outing, taking the third spot. Rounding up the top five is Henry Cavill‘s Man of Steel, which is estimated to rake in another $20.8 million for Warner Bros.

    MUMBAI: As the Hollywood Box office unleashed two new tentpoles, Roland Emmerich‘s White House Down and Paul Feig‘s The Heat, the top five grossing the weekend opening have changed. Although the new releases have taken over last weeks World War Z and Man of Steel, the animation dramaMonsters University seems to be sailing strong at the number One position. Sandra Bullock‘s comedy action The Heat confirms the second position followed closely byWhite House Down at number three.

    As per Fandango, Bullock‘s comedyThe Heat sold over 50 per cent more advance tickets than Feig‘s previous project, Bridesmaids. An interesting Fandango survey revealed that 88 per cent of ticket buyers wanted more female-oriented laughter. Based on the Thursday opening and Friday‘s weekend collections, Pixar‘s second highest grossing prequel Monsters University raked in nearly $17 million pushing its worldwide grossing to $173.7 million and counting. Sources from the industry predict the animation flick will cross the $200 million mark by this weekend. However the coming week looks bleak as Illumination Entertainment‘s sequel Despicable Me 2 hits the screens on 3 July.

    Over the two day run, The Heat minted nearly $41 million while Emmerich‘s catastrophic action White House Down grossed over $33.3 million.

    At the number four position, Brad‘s Zombie flick amasses a fair $32.5 million followed last by the red capped Kryptonian reboot Man of Steel at $ 21.5 million. The $225 million dollar high octane superhero flick has grossed nearly $450 million, however with stiff competition in the coming week, Man of Steel may be pushed out from the Top five.

    MUMBAI: From a weekend which expected three tentpoles raking in over $50 million respectively, the results have managed to live up to the expectations. Especially Pixar‘s Monster University leading at the No 1 position grossed over $137 million worldwide over its first weekend.

    Brad‘s zombie flick World War Z too bit off a sizable share at the box office with over $110 million worldwide collections. Lagging behind was Warner Bros‘ and Legendary‘s Man of Steel whose sales dropped nearly 65 per cent domestically but ranked number 1 with its worldwide grossings over $89 million.

    Zack Synder‘s Krptonian red-capped superhero reboot has soared globally over $188 million continuing to be a superhit internationally. Together with a total of $210 million collections in the domestic markets, Man of Steel is nearing the $400 million mark in its second weekend, after battling Pixar‘s Monsters and Brad Pitt‘s Zombies over the weekend.

    The Superman reboot also opened successfully (80 per cent) in China, minting over $25.5 million across 5631 screens, second best behind Warner Bros‘ Harry Potter finale.

    “We‘re in great shape moving into the 4th of July holiday playtime with such an iconic character at the helm,” said Warner Bros Domestic Distribution president Dan Fellman. “Hoping we have a similar result to the strong day we had on Father‘s Day.”

    Man of Steel promises a brighter weekend with 27 more markets opening this weekend, including the major countries France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia and China.

    MUMBAI: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) has set the cash registers ringing at the box office with a record-breaking opening day as well as the opening weekend collections. The Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer is on its way to join the illustrious Rs 100 crore club.

    The youthful entertainer is certainly the biggest opener for 2013 thus far by a mile. The film released in over 3,000 screens in the country with an earth-shattering response and its occupancy ranging between 95 per cent and 100 per cent in both single screens and multiplexes on Friday. With its positive reviews and good word of mouth, the movie showed a very good jump in its business on Saturday and Sunday and has been received well by the critics and audiences alike.

    The mammoth sized promotional events, guest appearances and performances on TV shows, brand associations and the works have done exceedingly well for it.

    Kapoor has created a solid fan following among the youth and second time writer-director, Ayan Mukerji, helped keep his fans happy.

    An extensive solo release backed by enhanced admission rates, has certainly accelerated the film‘s collection to rake in a handsome Rs 61.25 crore. The practice of reducing admission rates from Monday has been applied only at a select few outlets; this coupled with steady Monday, the film looks set to touch the 100 crore mark in real quick time.

    Ishkq In Paris, Preity Zinta‘s debut production venture has passed generally unnoticed, collecting about Rs 2 crore in its first week.

    Hum Hai Rahi Car Ke and Zindagi 50 50 found no takers and performed poorly.

    The Arjun Kapoor starrer Aurangzeb has collected a total of Rs 23.85 crore at the end of its second week.

    Go Goa Gone, the ‘zomcom‘ starring Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu and Vir Das has collected Rs 1.8 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 24.95 crore.

    Shootout At Wadala, the sequel to the 2007 hit Shootout At Lokhandwala has added Rs 1.1 crore for the fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 49.1 crore.

    Chhota Bheem And The Throne Of Bali in its fourth week has added Rs 40 lakh to take its four week total to Rs 4.65 crore.

    Aashiqui 2 is going rock steady. The film collected Rs 5.5 crore in its fifth week thus taking its five week total to Rs 76.65 crore, certainly proving to be the sleeper hit of the year.

    MUMBAI: India‘s first ‘zom-com‘ Go Goa Gone has been liked by a limited few at metro multiplexes. A meandering second half has affected the film to some extent. The collections did not show much variation in the opening three days and the film collected Rs 13.2 crore for first three days.

    Gippi failed to finds its audience, collected about Rs 2.25 crore for the first weekend.

    Shootout At Wadala remained average through its first week with its best performance coming from the Maharashtra belt. The film collected about Rs 34.8 crore in its first week.

    Bombay Talkies remained an experiment with scant commercial value despite four directors putting their mite into its making. The film has collected Rs 5.4 crore in its first week.

    Chhota Bheem And The Throne Of Bali had limited box office with figures of Rs 2.5 crore in its first week.

    Aashuqui2 established itself as a sure shot hit by adding Rs 17.5 crore in its 2nd week and taking its two week total to Rs 52.05 crore.

    Chashme Baddoor added Rs 10 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week business to Rs 42.3 crore.

    MUMBAI: Fresh from the box office success and critical accolades of ‘Lincoln‘ director Steven Spielberg‘s next film will be about the late Navy Seal Chris Kyle. It is scheduled to be released next year.

    The film is based on the autobiography of the man who is considered to be the deadliest sniper in US military history. He was killed along with a friend earlier this year at a Texas gun range.
     
    The film will star Bradley Cooper ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘. Cooper will next be seen in ‘The Hangover III‘ which releases later this month.

    Cameron to use performance capture in water for Avatar sequel

    MUMBAI: The forthcoming sequel of James Cameron‘s Avatar will feature underwater motion capture, according to Jon Landau, co-producer of the record-breaking first film.
     
    Speaking at the Technology Summit on Cinema in Las Vegas, Landau said Cameron will take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out in the next two films, it has been reported. "James has proposed to make use of the process because we can simulate it visually but can‘t simulate it experientially for them," Landau has reportedly said. He described the process as performance capture in water.
     
    Earlier, Cameron hinted at the possibility of exploring the oceans of Pandora, the forest moon setting for his 2009 3D box-office hit in the films to come in time to come. "We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalising, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters," Landau added.
     
    Cameron had also said that he would shoot part two and three back-to-back and release them in December 2014 and 2015 respectively. There is also talk of a fourth film that may manifest as a prequel.

    MUMBAI: Bipasha Basu and Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer horror movie Aatma collected Rs 51 million over its opening weekend. There is expected to be a massive drop in collections from today as the Hindi belt is immersed in the Holi mood already.

    Jackky Bhagnani’s south Indian remake Rangrezz has been rejected as the first weekend collections show. The film has managed to collect just Rs 34 million.

    Makrand Deshpande’s directorial venture starring Naseeruddin Shah Sona Spa found no takers.

    Jolly LLB made the most of its open run and its stars whose presence usually promises fun. It benefitted in its second weekend due to poor oppositions and collected Rs 52 million over the week. The film netted Rs 187.5 million from its 10-day run.

    Mere Dad Ki Maruti sustained in some parts, doing better in the North. It collected Rs 81.2 million in its first week.

    3G collected Rs 55 million in its first week.

    Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster dropped drastically in its second week to collect Rs 29 million. It has netted Rs 207 million in 17 days.

    Ram Gopal Verma’s The Attacks of 26/11 collected Rs seven million in its third week taking its total to Rs 139 million.

    Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che collected Rs 18 million in its fourth week to take its tally to Rs 475 million.

    Special 26 collected Rs five million in its sixth week to take its total to Rs 703.5 million.

    MUMBAI: 20th Century Fox‘s A Good Day To Die Hard captured the No. 1 box office spot narrowly in its fourth weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit and managed to cross the $150-million total overseas mark ($162.3 million).

    In China New Line/Warner Bros‘ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey registered an income of $37.3 million in 10 days thus propelling the Peter Jackson fantasy epic to a $700-million foreign gross total and more than $1 billion worldwide (only the 15th title in film history to surpass that figure).

    Warner‘s also introduced Jack The Giant Slayer in 10 Asian markets like South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam and in India.

    Playing at 1,824 locations, Jack rolled up a total of $13.7 million — more than a $7,500 per-screen average. Korea was by far the biggest market ($4.9 million at 507 sites).

    With no new openings, A Good Day, the fifth part of action franchise starring Bruce Willis, grossed $18.3 million on the weekend at 8,199 locations in 67 territories. France was its biggest weekend market, throwing off $3.5 million and a No. 2 market ranking on the weekend at 665 spots. The France cume stands at $10.6 million.

    Over a 25-year span the four prior Die Hard grossed a collective total of $694.6 million.

    The 1988 original Die Hard drew $57.8 million in offshore box office, with the first sequel, 1990‘s Die Hard 2, grossing $122.5 million. The last sequel, 2007‘s Live Free or Die Hard, completed its foreign run with box office of $249.7 million.

    Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Paramount/MGM‘s 3D co-production distributed overseas in most territories by the former, grossed $15.2 million on the weekend overall at more than 3,500 locations in 54 territories and lifting its total overseas take to $127.2 million.

    PVR Q3 consolidated net remains flat at Rs 88.9 mn

    MUMBAI: Film exhibitor and production company PVR consolidated net profit remained flat at Rs 88.9 million for fiscal third quarter ending 31 December compared to Rs 89.2 million in the corresponding fiscal.

     

    The consolidated revenues for the quarter went up by 43 per cent to Rs 2.02 billion as compared to Rs. 1.41 billion during the corresponding period of last year. Consolidated Ebitda for the quarter was up by 34 per cent to Rs 354.3 million as against Rs 263.8 million.

     

    On a standalone basis, PVR’s exhibition business posted a net profit of Rs 142.2 million including a one time profit of Rs 33.3 million.. Ebitda increased by 43 per cent to Rs. 345.2 million as compared to Rs 241 million in corresponding period of last year.

     

    The exhibition business revenue increased to Rs 1.88 billion from Rs 1.28 billion in the same period last year, up 46 per cent.

     

    PVR MD Ajay Bijli said, “We are extremely pleased that 2012 is shaping up as a great year at the box office. The revenues and profitability in the quarter and nine months has shown a robust growth over the same period last year. The good results is also a function of Company’s long term location strategy to partner in best mall developments in the country, its unique design philosophy, strong customer focus and a unique brand positioning. “

     

    On 8 January, PVR had completed the acquisition of 69.27 per cent stake in Cinemax India from its erstwhile promoters.

     

    In compliance with Sebi Takeover Code, the company has announced an open offer to shareholders of Cinemax India Limited for an additional 26 per cent stake, and the tendering period shall commence on 4 February.

     

    Consequent to the said acquisition, Cinemax India has now become a subsidiary of PVR. On a combined basis, PVR and Cinemax will have a network of 351 screens spread over 85 properties in 36 cities across the country.
