Colors snaps ‘Box Cricket League’ rights; slots it on Sundays at 4.30 pm

MUMBAI: Colors has joined hands with Balaji Telefilms and Marinating Films to bring together television and cricket in a power packed season 2 of Box Cricket League (BCL). The first season of the property was aired on Sony Entertainment Television.

Season 2 of Box Cricket league will be a long six month reality show, which will be aired every Sunday. The channel will start shooting for the show in the second week of February.

With a stellar line up of 200 celebrities in 10 teams, the one and a half hour show BCL will be aired on Colors and Colors HD from 28 February, 2016 every Sunday at 4.30 pm with a repeat telecast on Rishtey.

It may be recalled that on Sony, BCL season 1 had 150 celebrities and eight teams. The weekly show was aired at 7:30 pm.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Colors CEO Raj Nayak said, “We had a talk with Ekta (Ekta Kapoor) one day and we were discussing on how we can do better with BCL and she felt that the show can be better on Colors. We genuinely believe in the format and felt that if it’s strategically positioned well, packaged and marketed with a creative tweak to the format, then it has the potential to make it big this time.”

Talking about the late afternoon time slot for the show, he says, “About 99 per cent of people are at home from 4:30 – 6 pm on a Sunday. This is also the time when women who watch different shows on television want to see a different side to their celebs. Cricket is just a backdrop, it has drama, emotions and passion. BCL can be a great reality show. We air movies in the 4:30 evening slot and we garnered the maximum ratings. I think if the content is good then people will follow it.”

This star-studded cricket league will have 10 teams named after 10 cities namely Ahmedabad Express, Kolkata Babu Moshayes, Chandigarh Cubs, Delhi Dragons, Jaipur Raj Joshiley, Chennai Swaggers, Mumbai Tigers, Pune Anmol Ratan, Rowdy Bangalore and Lucknow Nawabs led by celebrities like Sunny Leone, Nandish Sandhu, Ajay Chaudhry, Mrunal Jain, Anita Hassandani, Kamya Punjabi and others.

The high point of the game is the mix of men and women in every team. The inclusion of males and females across all teams, makes it a battle of equals where the celebrities will be fully charged to kick the dust up.

Commenting on the time slot, Balaji Telefilms joint managing director Ekta Kapoor said, “The slot has seen ratings earlier. It’s a movie slot and also and Sunday evening is family time when the entire family can watch cricket together specially the ladies of the house. Therefore we think it’s the perfect time band for BCL.”

With a huge number of television stars vying to play this season of BCL, the league owners have had to set new guidelines for player qualifications.

The strict diktat ensures only top lead actors (who’ve starred as main leads for a minimum of 250 episodes) and second lead actors (who’ve had at least 500 episodes to their credit) can partake in this season. Besides popular fiction faces, GEC reality show winners and top contestants are also qualified to play.

Marinating Films managing director Sunny Arora asserted, “I used to organise cricket tournaments since my childhood. So one night this idea crossed my mind to have a cricket league and I discussed it with my partner Anand that we should have men and women playing together. We announced on Whatsapp that we were coming up with this league and since sending that message, the next three days were the most busiest days of my life. So that’s how the idea came about.”

Arora also added, “Colors is one of the leading channel in India and no one can compete with them when it comes to non-fiction series. Also Colors has a very strong team including Raj Nayak, Manisha and Sheetal, they are so clear in their thought and every show on Colors works and we believe that BCL will also work.”

With 200 celebrities in one show, BCL is no doubt an expensive proposition. Talking about the same, Arora informed, “This year the production cost of BCL has increased three times compared to last year. This time we are using a bigger venue, larger crew and more technicians. We have also incorporated more software to make the show as good as international matches. So yes, it’s an expensive show and we have invested much more than last year. And we are confident that the cost will be recovered because we are on Colors.”

Balaji Telefilms readies two shows for Colors Bengali & Star Jalsa

MUMBAI: Balaji Telefilms, which is eyeing expansion in the regional programming space, is all set to launch two new Bengali shows soon.

While the first one will be a Bengali fiction daily for Colors Bengali, the second will be a non-fiction show for Star Jalsa.

The Colors Bengali show will go on air from the first week of October this year, whereas the non-fiction show for Star Jalsa is slated to go on air in the first week of February 2016.

It may be recalled that in 2014, Balaji Telefilms had entered into a partnership with the Kolkata based production house Chhayabani to form Chhayabani Balaji Entertainment in a move to strengthen its regional offering.

Balaji Telefilms has also licensed the Box Cricket League (BCL) format for regional broadcasting to Zam Media from Punjab.

Under the aegis of Ekta Kapoor, Balaji Telefilms has executed over 15,000 hours of television content in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali entertainment across genres. What’s more, keeping abreast with technological advancements, the company has now moved towards HD programming to enhance viewing experience. It has also produced a fitness DVD with Sunny Leone for Times Wellness.

Balaji Telefilms eyes regional expansion; seeks local partners

MUMBAI: Even as the promoters have upped their stake in the company in the light of Star selling its 26 per cent stake, Balaji Telefilms Limited (BTL) has set sight on the regional television programming space for expansion.

The production house, which recently wrapped up the seventh season of Nach Baliye on Star Plus, plans to launch as many as 10 shows in Bengali and southern languages. Moreover, in order to break into the regional space, BTL is also eying tie-ups with local partners.

“Our plan is to have three – five shows each in Bengali and Southern languages by the end of FY2016,” the company said in its annual report.

This apart, BTL is also mulling launching a few of its Hindi shows in regional languages. The first of these would be the telecast of the Zee TV show Kumkum Bhagya, on Zee Bangla. At the same time, the production powerhouse is also eyeing tie-ups in the south, which will yield three to four shows.

It may be recalled that in December 2014, BTL had entered into an alliance with the Kolkata-based Chhayabani to form Chhayabani Balaji Entertainment and create distinctive, contemporary and clutter breaking television content for Zee Bangla.

Also under consideration is the plan to launch its celebrity sports reality show Box Cricket League in the regional space. At the same time, BTL has set a target to launch six new shows in the Hindi general entertainment channels (GEC) space this fiscal. While plans are underway to launch a comedy show on the lines of the Great Indian Laughter Challenge, BTL is also readying a high concept fiction show for Star Plus.

With audiences patronizing the Balaji brand, the company’s key focus is to improve its bottom line during FY2016.

“We aim to be more process-driven, rather than personality-driven. With changing dynamics of the industry, we are aiming to capitalise our capabilities in making high-concept fiction and non-fiction shows. To begin with, we are coming up with a high concept, high fiction show for Star TV. We are confident of the ratings of our new shows, especially reality based shows,” the company said.

On the movies front, BTL has a strong pipeline of movies lined up for FY16 and FY17.  With aspirations to become the number two entertainment studio going forward, the production house has in its kitty 8 – 10 films like Azhar, A Flying Jatt, Suspect X, Naatak, and Bhool Se Naam Na Lo Pyaar Ka, among others.

Not ignoring the fast-developing digital space, BTL is also in the process of creating its own IP and genuine B2C content to tap the burgeoning platform.

That said, BTL seems poised to spread its wings and fly even more so now with BTL group CEO Sameer Nair, armed with his business acumen, adding extra stars to the creative prowess of Ekta Kapoor.

  • Sony gets on-board White Rivers Digital for BCL

Sony gets on-board White Rivers Digital for BCL

MUMBAI: What happens when reality television meets the passion of the nation, cricket? Giving viewers the combination of both, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) a few weeks back had announced its first ever sports reality show – Box Cricket League (BCL).

Produced by Balaji Telefilms, the format is conceptualised by Marinating films’ Sunny Arora and Anand Mishra. They are also the co-owners of the show.

As the name suggests, BCL features India’s top 150 TV celebrities divided in eight different city teams.

Moreover, in order to generate the necessary buzz around the whole league, it has assigned the task to White Rivers Digital, a digital company which has established itself in the entertainment and lifestyle space. Via social media, it will help the audience get updated constantly and replicate the locker room drama on digital platforms innovatively.

White Rivers Digital CEO Shrenik Gandhi believes that digital media is a great tool to connect with the viewers real time. “We are thrilled to curate the digital journey for India’s biggest sports realty show. It is an exciting challenge and great opportunity in itself. Digital Media is a great tool to connect with the viewers real time and we look forward to some great action & drama on field, off field and most importantly, online.’’

Arora who is known for his unique ways of marketing and innovative ideas feels that BCL is a unique concept that will garner a lot of public attention and to increase their reach it is very important to strengthen their online presence.

“BCL is a one of its kind idea that will give the audience a sneak peak of their favourite TV celebrities battling out the game of cricket in a Box. With White Rivers being our digital agency on board, we hope to build a strong digital foundation. With their expertise we hope to enhance engagement and brand experience for consumers. The team has shown some great ideas that will mobilise the online audience. We hope we can spread the BCL fire into the digital world as well,’’ he said.

  • From IPL to BCL, Sony continues its love for cricket

From IPL to BCL, Sony continues its love for cricket

MUMBAI: Cricket is nothing less than a religion in India and when mixed with a high-dose of glamour and drama, it serves as the ultimate form of entertainment.
So, what happens when reality television meets the passion of the nation, cricket?

Giving viewers the combination of both, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is all set to launch India’s first ever sports reality show – Box Cricket League (BCL).

However, this is not the first time that Sony is associating itself with cricket. Who can forget the launch of Indian Premier League (IPL), which saw entertainment and cricket getting hitched? However, the host Mandira Bedi’s noodle-strapped sari blouses made more headlines than the pre and post match show.

“Everyone criticised us and we did not receive good responses for the same. I was there at Sony at that point in time and today after 14 years, we are back at it but with a twist,” says SET SVP and business head Nachiket Pantvaidya.

For Pantvaidya, the show conceptualised by Marinating Films and produced by Balaji Telefilms, is like coming back full circle. When he heard the concept, he immediately locked it. “Cricket toh sirf bahana hai (cricket is just an excuse), there is a lot more than just cricket,” he says.

BCL consists of eight teams, comprising of 120 popular television celebrities, who will compete against each other, playing a total of 19 matches of 14 overs each. The teams would be divided into two groups, A and B.

For Ekta Kapoor, who will make her debut in reality with BCL, sports has alienated itself from women, so with this she wants to get all the bahus and girls get into the game and play with the boys. “I have never touched reality shows. So today I am doing a combination of both. Kudiyon ka zamana hai, cricket toh sirf ek bahana hai,” laughs Kapoor.

Marinating Films director Sunny Arora aims to deliver a very good product. In the month of April, it had conducted a trial season with more than 100 actors and received a good response.  He believes that cricket is seen for entertainment and played for entertainment.

“We had organised a trial to understand how the format will work. Men and women playing together, what are the flaws…so now we have come up with a concrete plan. We have just increased the scale,” says Arora.

He further believes that the major reason why it worked in the trial was because of the presence of female players.

Matches will commence with a face-off between the two playing teams, where they will perform signature moves on their team anthem. Giving the mundane coin toss a skip, BCL has introduced a ‘filmy toss’ with options like ‘Jai or Veeru’, ‘Basanti or Dhanno’. Upping the glam quotient will be two BCL titlis, Noorin Shah and Vrushika Mehta, who will perform acts during time outs and the ball change.

Making the game more entertaining, viewers will also get to see behind the scenes action, locker room gossips and some extremely creative awards like Gentleman of the Match and Most Stylish Player of the Match amongst others.

While the spirit of cricket remains intact, the introduction of new twists in the game is sure to keep the audience entertained. To step up the excitement, during the sixth and tenth overs, the batting captain will challenge the bowling captain to hit a certain number of runs in a single over with a particular bowler.

If they manage to hit the number of runs they have challenged them for, then they earn double the runs. If not, they will lose the number of runs they challenged the bowling team. The seventh over will also see a ball change procedure where the players can strategise their next game plan.

Balaji Telefilms group CEO Sameer Nair shares the genesis behind the entire concept of the show. “When Ekta first heard about it was through a friend of her who owns a team and Marinating Films, she wanted to buy a team with the marinating team boys. Then she thought, why to buy a team when we can invest in the league.”

Balaji Telefilms has a joint venture with Marinating Films and have invested in the company. “Cricket is India’s most popular sport. Daily soaps are most popular form of television entertainment and the marriage of these two promises to be quite electric and exciting,” believes Nair.

The shoot for the series will start from 20 November and will take place in Filmcity, Reliance Studios.

So how does one qualify to be a BCL player? “Out of 11, nine have to be actors. How do you qualify as an actor? There is a bible to it. For example, depending on the number of shows he/she has done. And if one is a non-actor, he/she has to be either a director or a producer. The selection is done by the individual team captains and the owners. They should have experience,” answers Arora.

Apart from the formal announcement, the channel has not started any marketing activities yet. According to SET SVP marketing head Gaurav Seth, eight teams have created their own anthems and he plans to pitch it in a different way. “The series is six weeks away. We have some interesting ideas in our heads and will soon execute them when the right time comes. In this country, you can never be short of celebrities. Fans will come to see the fights, victories, high and low moments.”

Digital will be a special focus for Seth considering the amount of fan clubs each of the celebs own on the digital platforms. “One star will tweet, others will pick it up. There will be war, fights but at the end it’s all about entertaining viewers,” he says.

Initially the project was pitched to Sony Six, but Sony realised the power of the concept and thought it will be apt for a GEC channel. “The moment we came to know it would be aired on a GEC channel, we had to change the entire look and feel to ensure that it’s up to the mark,” states Arora.

The promos of the series will go on-air from end November. Though the date is not finalised yet, it will run for four weeks and be a weekly property.
