The subtle sense of humor that is a characteristic of all the JWT-Portfolio Night films, make this is a must watch. The latest film can be viewed on JWT’s official Portfolio Night page, http://www.facebook.com/portfolionightmumbai11

The Portfolio Night All-Star event is where the most talented young creative from each Portfolio Night event is selected and flown to New York to compete at Portfolio Night All-Stars competition in New York City in August 2013.

  • Aereo files pre-emptive lawsuit against CBS

Aereo files pre-emptive lawsuit against CBS

MUMBAI: Aereo, which offers online streaming of television channels in the US has filed a request in New York federal court.

It wants a declaratory ruling that its Internet TV service is legal. The aim is to pre-empt any attempts by channels like CBS to hinder its planned expansion to Boston next week.

Aereo‘s spokesperson Virginia Lam said, “In response to the CBS companies‘ repeated threats to sue Aereo in every market that it enters, Aereo has filed a declaratory judgment action in New York naming CBS, its Boston affiliates and its wholly owned and operated companies located in Aereo‘s initial expansion markets.

“In 2012, CBS and other broadcasters chose to file copyright lawsuits against Aereo in the federal courts in New York. Last year, the trial court denied CBS‘s and the other broadcasters‘ request for a preliminary injunction against Aereo; and, last month, the appeals court affirmed that decision. The fact that CBS did not prevail in their efforts to enjoin Aereo in their existing federal lawsuit does not entitle them to a do-over in another jurisdiction. We are hopeful that any such efforts to commence duplicative lawsuits to try to seek a different outcome will be rejected by the courts.”

The filing names CBS as well as their owned and operated affiliates, and covers expansion cities. The complaint argues that a decision was already made by the Second Circuit that Aereo was not guilty of infringement and should not be shut down with a preliminary injunction. Therefore, following Aereo around the nation as it expands and leveling the same action against them from court to court would be improper.

Earlier both CBS and News Corp had threatened to move to cable if Aereo succeeded.

  • CNN to double newsgathering presence in US

CNN to double newsgathering presence in US

MUMBAI: CNN plans to double its domestic newsgathering presence with new operations in 10 US cities, resulting in an aggressive expansion of its newsgathering in the US. The announcment was made by CNN US senior VP newsgathering Nancy Lane.

The new operations will be based in Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Houston; Las Vegas; Minneapolis, Minn.; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and Seattle. This expansion will also allow CNN to build stronger partnerships with affiliates in new and existing locations across the country. CNN already has bureaus in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

The newly expanded newsgathering operation will be staffed with a mix of traditional general assignment reporters with CNN’s current roster of “show-based correspondents” who are attached to many of CNN’s daytime and prime-time programs, and newly designated “all-platform journalists.” All-platform journalists will combine new technologies with traditional journalism skills to gather news from the heart of America for all CNN’s networks and services, especially CNN’s growing digital platforms.

Lane said , “CNN’s rapid adoption of new technology over the years put us in the enviable position to be able to expand at a time when others are cutting back. Our technological innovations allow our reporters to be at the center of more breaking news events and developing stories across the United States, with greater independence and mobility than ever before. This expansion is a critical component of CNN Worldwide’s overall strategy for increased content ownership.”

CNN’s most recent development of technology in newsgathering includes the use of lightweight kits that combine cameras, editing tools and advanced satellite and Internet communications technology into a laptop-based system. This suite of technologies enable CNN’s journalists to employ immediate live and video FTP submissions, real-time content monitoring, editing and voice communication from anywhere in the field.

  • Fremantlemedia makes additions to drama catalogue ahead of MipTV

Fremantlemedia makes additions to drama catalogue ahead of MipTV

MUMBAI: Televisioon format owner and distributor FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) has announced the acquisition of two drama shows which will launch at the television trade event MipTV in April.

The shows are Love You To Death and The Best Years. They join FME’s expanding drama portfolio.

The dark, funny Love You To Death stars filmmmaker John Waters Pink Flamingos, Hairspray in his television series debut as the ‘Groom Reaper’. It and tells the twisted, inspired-by-reality tales of spouses who have killed their loved, or not-so-loved ones.

The series is scheduled later this year in the US on Court TV as ‘Til Death Do Us Part and Global Television in Canada. It will be on offer to buyers worldwide from FME at MipTV for both TV (excluding the US) and DVD (excluding Canada).
As the ‘Groom Reaper’, Waters guides viewers through bizarre stories and cases of wedded woe, with his trademark wry sense of humour and definite macabre sensibility. Each episode – inspired by true crimes – dramatises the stories of ill-fated husbands and wives and reveals the flaws in what the killers thought was the perfect crime – like in the case of the ‘spend-a-holic’ spouse, who poisoned their other half to claim the life insurance, only to find that the cheque for the poison bounced! In each episode, viewers follow a murderous trail to find out whodunit and will be on the edge of their seats until the very end, as things are not always as they seem.

The Best Years follows a group of friends through the ups and downs of college life. It’s an insight into the real-life drama that is university – the excitement and pressures that go hand in hand with newfound independence.

Leaving her foster-home past behind, Samantha Best (Charity Shea) arrives on a scholarship for freshman year at the prestigious Charles University in Boston, MA and sets about finding her feet in the hallowed halls; not to mention finding a whole new set of friends – and ‘frenemies’ – along the way.

As Samantha learns to juggle academic pressures, the perils of the social scene, friction with roommates and liaisons with lovers, The Best Years will be compulsive viewing as she and this sometimes dysfunctional college family make their way together.

FME CEO David Ellender says, “We are delighted to add these two unique dramas from Blueprint Entertainment to our burgeoning portfolio of fine scripted entertainment, which we are committed to expanding further throughout 2007. We are thrilled to be launching both Love You To Death and The Best Years at MipTV. This gives broadcasters from around the world the chance to be the first on board with what will be very highly-prized additions to any schedule line-up for 2007.”

Cartoon Network head Jim Samples resigns after Boston terror scare

MUMBAI: Following a marketing stunt that went all wrong, resulting in the bomb scare in the city of Boston, Cartoon Network head Jim Samples has announced his resignation via an internal memo sent to the network’s staff.

“It’s my hope that my decision allows us to put this chapter behind us and get back to our mission of delivering unrivaled original animated entertainment for consumers of all ages,” Samples said.

“Compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch,” he added.

Samples has been with the network for 13 years.

On 5 February, Turner Broadcasting, of which Cartoon Network is a division, and the advertising agency involved agreed to pay $2 million in compensation for the emergency response the devices had spurred in Boston.

The agreement between Turner, Interference Inc. and several state and local agencies resolves any potential civil or criminal claims against the two companies, states an official release.

The guerilla marketing campaign by Cartoon Network was intended to promote the upcoming movie release of its late-night cult Aqua Teen Hunger Force which triggered a police alert for a possible terrorist threat on 31 January.
