    Mumbai: Boost, one of India’s most trusted health food drink brands has stepped in to offer cricket fans a more interactive world cup experience by releasing “Boost: Game Stamina Ka.” Launched on 4 March in partnership with World Cricket Championship 3 (WCC3), the game promotes women’s cricket during the ongoing Women’s World Cup.

    Through this game, Boost wants to spread the message that ‘Game Ladke Ladkiyon ka Nahin, Stamina ka Hai,’ reiterating their legacy of cricket being a game of stamina and not genders. Conceptualised by Mindshare Content+, “Boost: Game Stamina Ka” is a one of its kind game that has a custom mode where the players can battle a male squad with an all-female squad.

    Boost is ready to join the cricket fever and represent the spirit of cricket in India. Cricket is a game where a person’s stamina, perseverance, and performance speak volumes. Cricket, regardless of gender, just requires stamina and skills to succeed. In India, women who aspire to play cricket encounter a variety of challenges, including the preconceived notion of men being better than women as players. If a gamer wins a match after it is completed, the winners are tallied onto a weekly leader board, and the top three players will earn platinum rewards every week, as well as an exciting prize from the brand. The game is accessible both on iOS and Android.

    MUMBAI: Mindshare India and Lodestar UM shone at the Festival of Media Global Awards 2021 announced Thursday night. While Mindshare India won the grand prix: Agency of the year award bagging two gold and three silver medals, Lodestar UM won two gold, one silver and a bronze medal.  Wavemaker also bagged a silver, taking India’s total tally at the global awards to eleven.

    Mindshare won its two golds for its campaigns for Active Wheel and Boost brands. The winning campaigns included, career from home – beyond the confines of her kitchen for Active Wheel and Boost stamina meter – A new currency in town! for Boost. These awards were under the best campaign for a local brand and best use of data & insight award categories respectively.

    The agency won its three silvers also for the same campaigns- two for the Active wheel campaign and one for the Boost campaign.

    Lodestar UM’s four major awards came for the The punishing signal campaign done for the Mumbai Police. This included, a gold in the impact award category, gold in best use of event or experiential category, silver in best use of traditional media – OOH category and bronze in the creative use of media category.

    HUL ramps up ad spends in second Covid2019 quarter

    BENGALURU: FMCG major and the largest player in terms of advertising and marketing spends, Hindustan Unilever (HUL) upped its advertising spends by 43 per cent during the second Covid2019 quarter – (Q2 2021, the quarter ended 30 September 2020, quarter or period under review) as compared to the immediate trailing quarter Q1 2021. The company had pared quarter over quarter (q-o-q) and year-on-year (y-o-y) advertisement expenses in the first quarter of fiscal 2020 (Q1 2021, quarter ended 30 June 2020) during which the Covid2019 lockdown was in place by over 30 per cent to Rs 800 crore from Rs 1,175 crore (down 31.9 per cent) in Q4 2020 and Rs 1,167 crore (down 31.4 per cent) in Q2 2020 respectively. For the period under review, HUL spent Rs 1,144 crore towards advertisement expenses as compared to Rs 1,200 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. All numbers in this report are consolidated numbers unless stated otherwise.

    The company reported 15.2 percent y-o-y and 8.2 percent q-o-q increase in total revenue at Rs 11,776 crore as compared to Rs 10,223 crore in Q2 2020 and Rs 10,885 crore in Q1 2021 respectively. However, in terms of percentage of total income (operating revenue plus other income), HUL’s ad spends during fiscal 2021 were down when compared to previous periods. The FMCG major’s ad spends in Q2 2021 of Rs 1,144 crore were 9.7 percent of operating revenue of 11,776 crore. Please refer to the figure below:

    For the half year ended 30 September 2020 (H1 2021) the company had spent Rs 1,944 crore (8.6 percent of total revenue), which was 17.9 per cent lower than the Rs 2,367 crore (11.4 per cent of total revenue) during the corresponding year ago quarter. For FY 2020 and FY 2019, HUL had spent Rs 4,688 crore (11.9 per cent of total revenue) and Rs 4,552 crore (11.7 per cent of total revenue) respectively.
    The company reports numbers for four segments, the largest of which in terms of revenue is the beauty segment, followed by the home, foods & refreshments, and ‘Others’.

    The company has reported y-o-y revenue growth for the four segments. In an earnings press release, HUL said that growth in Q2 2021 was competitive and profitable with reported turnover growth of 16 per cent and domestic consumer growth (excluding the impact of merger of GSK CH and acquisition of ‘VWash’) of 3 per cent. The FMCG player avers that the strength of its portfolio is demonstrated by the fact that 70 per cent of its business was gaining penetration and that health, hygiene and nutrition products, which formed cumulatively 80 per cent of its portfolio, grew in double digits.

In our sector, rural markets have been resilient but the demand in urban India especially in metropolitancities has been muted. We believe that the worst is behind us and we are cautiously optimistic on demand recovery.”

    Home Care:

    Household Care delivered strong performance across all segments led by continued penetrationgains. We have stepped up our innovation intensity to address the ‘clean living’ needs of consumers; ‘Domex’ range is now available nationally. In Fabric Wash, we have reduced our prices to pass on benefits of lowercommodity costs to consumers. Category consumption of Laundry has been adversely impacted due to confinedliving. Continued focus on driving market development has enabled us to grow our Liquids and Fabric Sensationsegments strongly.

    Beauty & Personal Care:

    Skin Cleansing grew in double digits on back of a very strong performance in ‘Lifebuoy’and a good delivery in ‘Lux’. Hand Sanitizers and Handwash segments continue to gain penetration and havedelivered robust growths. Oral care grew in double digits with accelerated momentum in ‘Close Up’. Hair Care alsogrew in double digits; our portfolio interventions along with repurposed communications are resonating well withconsumers and driving salience. In Skin Care, ‘Glow & Lovely’ and ‘Glow & Handsome’ have successfully landed onshelves across the nation and we continue the journey towards a more inclusive vision of beauty. While theessential part of Skin Care saw pickup in demand, ‘winter portfolio sell-in’ was impacted due to muted tradesentiment and liquidity constraints.

    Foods & Refreshment:

    Foods, Tea and Coffee sustained the high growth momentum and grew in double digits; ourconsumer-focused activations and innovations are leveraging the ‘in-home consumption’ trend. Our prudent anddynamic management of unprecedented inflation in Tea has enabled all our brands to grow in double digits andthis positions us well. Performance of our Nutrition business was competitive and disrupted supply lines are nowfully restored. In the quarter, we expanded ‘Boost’ nationally with the narrative of ‘Play a bigger game’ andlaunched a special film on ‘Horlicks’ to celebrate the deeper meaning of growth that stems from courage andconfidence. While we saw sequential improvement, Ice Creams, Foods Solutions and Vending businesses continueto be impacted due to out-of-home consumption loss.

    KOLKATA: Disney+Hotstar has bolstered its sponsorship portfolio for IPL 2020 with 13 sponsors. The brands which have onboarded for the largest cricket showbiz span across categories.

    The start-up unicorn Dream11 is the co-presenting sponsor and Boost is co-powered by sponsor. The 11 associate sponsors include Acko, Maruti Suzuki, KhataBook, Flipkart, Swiggy, Ace23, HDFC Bank, Great Learning, MX Player, Kingfisher Calendar and AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India).

    “Dream11 IPL 2020 will be a major catalyst for viewers and fans, who are longing to see their favourite stars back on the field. We have created avenues for interactive advertising innovations which enable brands to engage with their audience more effectively," Star and Disney India ad sales president Nitin Bawankule said.

    Considerably, Disney+ Hotstar recently decided to take IPL matches behind paywall this year. It has struck deal with Jio and Airtel to boost the subscription too. Hence, the bold move will allow brands to reach high spender quality audiences.

With this campaign, Boost created a platform to share tips and tricks with their brand ambassadors, Virat Kohli and Mahender Singh Dhoni. Within a span of 4 weeks, more than 25,000 ideas and wishes have poured in for the cricket stars.

    The campaign ‘Exams are On’ came alive through interactive kiosks which were set up across 10 cities at schools, cricket academies and shopping malls. The young fans are also sharing their winning ideas with Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni by giving a missed call on 99998-86611 and recording their voice messages.

With this campaign, the brand intends to take its theme of ‘Play A Bigger Game’ beyond an inspiring message to actually providing kids with an opportunity to prepare to ‘Play A Bigger Game’ by learning it from Virat himself.

    The video features Virat Kohli preparing a young kid to play a bigger game in his own unique style. This is one of first set of long form branded digital series created exclusively for kids. The videos are about how Virat coaches a young kid in his own unique & unconventional ways & helps him prepare to #playabiggergame. Boost plans to drive over 10Mn+ views for the #playabiggergame campaign by promoting it across popular digital platforms of YouTube, Facebook & Gaming Apps.

    2002 will be the year of intensified localisation for kiddies’ channel Cartoon Network. 

    Govindan – Cricket to reward viewer loyalty
    The channel that started going desi in February 2001, managed to climb to the number two position in the Hindi market in the 5 – 9 pm band by December (close on the heels of Star Plus), according to VP, marketing and PR Hema Govindan. The rapid rise in rankings is due to local acquisitions like Pandavas and Sinbad, bought from Pentamedia Graphics, which have paid off handsome ratings and Govindan sees the channel going in for more Indian folklore in animation. “Not just Indian stories, we are looking at acquiring animation from Japanese studios too, which are creating shows whose essence appeals to Indian sensibilities”, she says. 

    The channel is shifting gears to cope 
    with the imminent entry of Disney, although Govindan insists that some competition would only keep Cartoon Network fighting fit. In the last few months, the channel revamped its programming franchises and taken a whole new look at promotions, which too have received a dose of localisation. That the channel is not sparing any efforts to maintain viewer loyalty and phenomenise toon characters is clear from the massive promotion that accompanies its second Toon Cricket event in Chennai and Mumbai this year.

    Although Govindan is reluctant to put a figure on the huge promo blitz, she admits it is ‘massive, probably the largest in scale for the year.’ Apart from the hoardings and the ads on FM and local cable channels, there will be a ‘toon mobile’, a 17-foot open float depicting cricket net sessions that will move through the cities, with toon characters in tow, handing out passes in schools and entertaining the younger generation. Besides, the channel has run a contest for selecting the teams and will be flying down five children from their home towns to watch the match live. 

    The channel’s Night Shift, launched in November is targeting an entire new viewership comprising teens and young adults. Not surprisingly, the move has widened the channel’s ad client base, with clients like Gili’s diamonds entering into tie-ups for Valentine’s Day packages. While Govindan says it is early days to gauge the increase in viewership post the launch of Night Shift (timed to wean adults away from soaps and thrillers on mainstream channels), she says the channel currently reaches between 12 to 15 million Indian households.

    Announcing the details of ‘Toon Cricket 2002’, Govindan said that the three-hour match will be held at the Andheri Sports Complex on 24 February. Beverage conglomerate Pepsi is the main sponsor. The co-sponsors are Solana, Colgate, Cadbury Gems, Boost, ACT II Popcorn, TI Cycle’s. Positioning as a highly interactive event, she said that cricket was chosen because today’s cricketer’s are role models for aspiring youngsters. The initiative is targeted at kids as well as the young at heart. The tagline is ‘It’s a mad game but soomeone’s got to play it’. The network hopes that it will make audiences as well as rival channels aware that the toons seek a larger slice of the action pie.

    In a move inspired by the ESPN Star Sports show ‘Super Selector’ the channel invited toon addicts to be ‘Super Selectors’. The channel claims that thousands of entries were received in a contest to decide who the captains should be and 450 winners will be given passes to the event. Elaborating further on the strategy, Govindan said that the aim is to blur the line between the real world and the toon world. To achieve this the rules of the game have been tweaked to make it unusual and refreshing. The tie-up with Pepsi involves hoardings where cricketers who appear in the cola’s ads give hilarious tips to the toons.
