    Something Special announces sale of two format options to Spain’s Mediawan

    Mumbai: Something Special, Seoul-based #1 independent* international format agency announced the licensing of two formats into Spain and also announced they are taking a hot new  dating format to MIPFormats/MIPTV. Something Special’s head of international business Praise ChanMi Shin will be at MIP to present a case study of Still Alive a mystery reality game show format which the company has created with top Korean creator, Miyeon Kim and Bora Lee. The session is taking place at 10:15 am on Sunday, 7 April 2024 in the Palais des Festivals Riviera Stage.

    Spain’s Mediawan acquired two formats through its local production labels: Veranda took Something Special’s spooky format Still Alive while Boomerang took celebrity competition format Battle in the Box

    Something Special is also preparing for MIPFormats and MIPTV and will bring their hot new dating format: I AM SINGLE (aka I AM SOLO – KR title): In 2023, there were 43 dating shows airing across different channels and platforms in Korea. Among them, this show has broken records as one of the most viewed non-scripted dating shows across three streaming platforms, including Netflix. This show has also been the most searched and viral TV show of 2023.

    Vishnu Athreya elevated to SVP programming at Cartoon Network

    MUMBAI: There’s good news for Vishnu Athreya’s fans amidst Indian animation studios. The man who gave a fillip to domestic animation production, when he ran Indian programming at Cartoon Network (CN), has got a promotion in Atlanta.

    Athreya has been promoted to senior vice president programming at Cartoon Network, an expanded role. The new title was announced by Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher.

    He will add series development for Boomerang while continue to oversee scheduling, acquisitions, and the strategic positioning of programming content across all branded linear and non-linear program platforms for Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Athreya is based in Atlanta and will still report to Sorcher.

    Earlier in 2014, Athreya had been named the vice president, programme scheduling for CN and Boomerang. He was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day scheduling and strategic positioning of programming content for Cartoon Network, Boomerang and branded non-linear programme platforms.

    He served as departmental lead for long-range calendar planning along with developing creative strategies for on-air stunts and special events surrounding the networks’ growing library of original, acquired and classic animated programming.

    He first joined Turner Broadcasting’s kids’ channels Cartoon Network, Toonami, POGO, Boomerang and Cartoonito in Asia Pacific, where he was instrumental in driving CN to a leadership position in the market. He joined CN in 2014, acting as the departmental lead for long-range calendar planning. He was also charged with developing creative strategies for on-air stunts and special events surrounding the networks’ growing library of original, acquired and classic animated programming.

    Athreya earned a post graduate diploma in communications from the Mudra Institute of Communications in Ahmedabad, India. He also holds a bachelor’s of science in chemistry from St Stephens College in Delhi, India.

    MACAO:Turner International yesterday announced a new division to lead its digital innovation internationally and promoted with Aksel van der Wal, presently senior vice-president and chief financial officer, to the new role of executive vice-president, to lead the initiative effective 1 January, 2017.

    Under his leadership the new division will focus on driving profitable growth through international consumer-centric initiatives, including all of Turner’s international multiplatform suite of digital properties and its direct-to-consumer product strategy, Turner said in a statement during the on-going CASBAA Convention 2016 here yesterday.

    In close co-operation with the Turner International presidents, van der Wal has the responsibility for the existing portfolio of international products and services on the web, for smart phones, games, apps and OTT, and he will also be charged with developing new digital direct-to-consumer businesses leading a cross-platform business intelligence function that drives consumer insight and helping to implement the strategy of the non-linear ad sales business.

    Additionally, van der Wal will identify new opportunities for Turner and decide on how to engage in those new areas through technological product innovation and/or acquisitions.

    “As our industry undergoes huge evolution, the impact of digital disruption and changing consumer behaviour continues to put audience insight right at the heart of our business strategy,” Gerhard Zeiler, President, Turner International said in the statement about van der Wal’s new assignment and the company’s fresh outlook.

    “This new division will ensure that we assess new opportunities for innovation, development and acquisition through the lens of relevant, robust consumer data and through a realigned, agile organisational structure. Aksel’s experience in transformative management, his first-class understanding of both the linear and digital media landscapes and his detailed knowledge of Turner’s international operation all combine to make him a superb fit for this new role,” Zeiler said.

    In his role as chief financial officer for Turner International, van der Wal, who will report to the Turner president, will be succeeded by Trey Turner, presently Senior VP, Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions. Al the new changes will be effective 1 January, 2017.

    Based in Atlanta, Turner will report to Pascal Desroches, Executive VP and CFO of Turner, while working closely with Zeiler. He will be responsible for the company’s financial operations and will be an active partner and contributor in shaping the direction of the company’s international business and implementing its strategy.
    “Trey has the perfect experience to lead the business, capital and budgeting activities for our international businesses,” according to said Pascal Desroches, who added, “He has acquired a depth of knowledge about our company and brings great passion and significant experience to the role. We expect Trey to play a key role in helping us expand our global operations.”

    Aksel van der Wal joined Turner in 2014 as CFO, Turner EMEA and was promoted to S VP and CFO, Turner International, in June 2015. Before joining Turner, van der Wal worked for three years and served as CEO, Time Out, at its two main business sites, London and New York City. Prior to Time Out, he was CFO at online ticket exchange operation Seatwave and previously held senior financial and business development roles at Vodafone, including CFO of partner markets.

    Turner International operates versions of core Turner brands, including CNN, TNT, Cartoon Network, Boomerang and TCM Turner Classic Movies as well as country and region-specific networks and businesses in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.     MUMBAI: Turner has entered into a partnership with Pops Worldwide to launch its Boomerang brand on the popular POPS Kids non-linear platform in Vietnam.

    Turner in Southeast Asia MD Phil Nelson  said,  “This partnership is another landmark in the ongoing expansion of the Boomerang brand within this region. The service will offer world-class content, on-demand, to millions of consumers in Vietnam on the POPS Kids, platform that is familiar and easy to use.”

    “We are excited to partner with Turner to bring Boomerang – with its portfolio of well-loved characters – to POPS Kids, Vietnam’s premier kids’ education and entertainment destination with almost 400 million views,” commented Pops Worldwide, founder and CEO Esther Nguyen.

    Boomerang, which Turner rebranded globally in late 2014, is an all-animation, kids-targeted network, with a line-up of world-famous cartoon characters from shows such as: The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and Dexter’s Laboratory. It is known for its line-up that is ideally suited to a safe, family co-viewing experience. On POPS Kids, the programming will be exclusively in Vietnamese and will be available from April 1, 2016, with a special preview scheduled for March 31.

    The agreement follows substantial recent distribution growth for Boomerang in Asia, notably in Thailand where the local offering is available in 15 million homes and has been the number one kids’ TV channel by a considerable margin since its launch in 2013.

    New Delhi, 11 March: Actor Laurent Lafitte has agreed to be Master of Ceremonies throughout the 69th Festival de Cannes being held from 11 to 22 May under the presidency of Australian director George Miller.

    The actor and comedian will host the Opening Ceremony on 11 May and the prize giving during the Closing Ceremony on 22 May.

    A pensionnaire of the Comédie-Française since 2012, Laurent Lafitte began his career in the 1990s. After a triumphant one-man-show entitled “Laurent Lafitte, comme son nom l’indique”, he embarked on a career in film and theatre. In 2011, he was Master of Ceremony for the 25 Nuit des Molières.

    He has excelled in a range of registers from comedy (The Other Side of the Tracks, 16 ans… ou presque, Papa ou maman, etc.), to drama and arthouse film (Little White Lies, Bright Days Ahead, Tristesse Club, Boomerang). 

    Having appeared in Love Punch in 2013 alongside Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson, he has just finished filming Elle by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven and is currently working on Albert Dupontel’s latest film Au revoir là-haut. Lafitte will also star with Uma Thurman in the cast of Marjane Satrapi’s next film – an adaptation of novel by Romain Puértolas: “The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir who got Trapped in an IKEA Wardrobe”.

    Laurent Lafitte succeeds Lambert Wilson who emceed in Cannes in 2014 and 2015. The ceremonies are produced and broadcast on free-to-air Canal+.

    MUMBAI: Turner International Asia Pacific has promoted Mark Eyers to senior vice president. 

     

    As chief content officer, Eyers oversees every aspect of Turner’s kids content business and portfolio of leading kids brands across Asia Pacific including Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Toonami and Pogo.

     

    Based in Hong Kong, Eyers will focus on strengthening the planning process for these brands, identifying and developing fresh animation talent on local, regional and international level as well as opportunities to further develop and distribute hit properties and content franchises across the company’s multiple platforms – TV, web and mobile.

     

    He will also be accountable for spearheading new channel development across the region.

     

    Turner International Asia Pacific president Ricky Ow said, “Under Mark’s leadership, Turner’s kids brands have not only dominated the genre but also expanded tremendously across the region. He has spearheaded the growth of our kids brands across multi-platform while also leading numerous international original animation productions, including the award-winning Monster Beach and recent series Exchange Student Zero.     Eyers, joined Turner International Asia Pacific’s creative services team in 2004 and previously worked as vice president of kids content. In this capacity, he was responsible for the implementation of a unified programming vision across all Turner brands by integrating the original production and development unit within the programming division.

    Turner green lights new kids co-production with Synergy Media & Studio Goindol

    MUMBAI: Turner Broadcasting has greenlit a new co-production with Synergy Media and Studio Goindol, marking the network’s biggest ever animation project in Korea.

     

    Titled Beat Monsters, the series is a comedy starring alien monsters from outer space on the lookout for the ultimate beat. There will be 52×2’ shorts and additional micro-shorts. Each episode will fuse live-action footage and CGI animation techniques to create a rich and colourful environment.

     

    “These fun and fresh shorts are exactly what we’re looking for as part of our International Shorts Program. We’re really pleased to find a like minded and globally-focused partner in Korea. When it launches, Beat Monsters will deliver world-class laughs around the world from London to Lagos, and Madrid to Manila,” said Turner kids networks Asia Pacific chief content officer Mark Eyers.

     

    Beat Monsters is expected to air in late 2016 on Turner’s portfolio of kids’ channels in Asia Pacific including Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Toonami, as well as on Cartoon Network in EMEA. The project is under development with the assistance from Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) and, in 2014, the pilot short was named ‘Best-in-Show’ at the Asian Animation Summit.

     

    Synergy Media president Eugene Kang said, “To partner with Turner and have exposure for our IP across millions of households is a real boon for us. I am really happy to see humorous Asian ideas go global, and hope that this is just the first of many projects and co-productions that Turner and Synergy will be able to work on together.”
