MUMBAI: Avengers: Infinity War set new records on BookMyShow as it became the first Hollywood film to sell an unprecedented 12 tickets a second when the bookings were at its peak on the weekend.  BookMyShow has so far sold over 3.5 million tickets for this mega blockbuster and has contributed close to 45% to the film’s opening weekend collection in India.

The advance sales of the film were driven majorly by its English version given the high decibel buzz surrounding it. However, once the film released on April 27, 2018, BookMyShow witnessed a huge spike in the tickets sales for regional language versions of the film. 74% sales for its Hindi version happened post the release of the film indicating the massive role played by strong word of mouth.

The film, with its strong fan following and powerful content and storytelling has created new records on BookMyShow. By contributing close to 45% to the film’s opening weekend Net collections, we are thrilled to have been the default movie ticketing platform for millions of Avengers fans across the country.”

We always strive to work with the best-in class partners like BookMyShow whose efforts have enabled us to extend the experience to cinema-goers across the country,” said Bikram Duggal – Head, Studio Entertainment, Disney India.

Avengers: Infinity War also earlier created the record for highest ever advance sales on BookMyShow among Hollywood films. It sold over 1 million tickets even before the film’s release.  BookMyShow also joined forces with Disney India to combine their digital efforts for this film and together developed a deeper understanding of consumer buying behaviour and purchase patterns.

BookMyShow targets Hindi audience in new ad

MUMBAI: Online entertainment ticketing platform BookMyShow is back with a television commercial, especially targeted at Hindi speaking markets, just in time with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Tiger Zinda Hai hitting theatres last week.

The 40-second ad film takes a slice from reality and wonderfully brings alive that feeling of disappointment when a person so willingly walks up to the box office cinema hall only to be told that the shows are houseful or only the front seats are available. It shows the distress of a person to resort to information gathered through hearsay to make himself seem pretentiously involved in the discussions surrounding a movie. The film ends with a simple solution to this common problem- just book your tickets on BookMyShow.

With this ad film, conceptualised by BBH India, BookMyShow effortlessly describes how it feels to be left out when you haven’t seen a film and others around you have. BookMyShow arrived at the insight after a detailed consumer research conducted with India’s leading research and measurement company Nielsen India.

The TVC also has a shorter edit and will be supported by digital campaigns in select markets.

BookMyShow VP of marketing and business intelligence Marzdi Kalianiwala says,“When we decided to use television as a medium to bring on board new users on BookMyShow, we wanted to come up with a simple film that would resonate with many of us. Conceptualised by BBH India, our ad film has been specifically timed with the release of Tiger Zinda Hai to capture the hype and existing awareness and excitement around the film.”

“We are confident that viewers will find the film’s honesty very reassuring and comforting when they see that they are not the only ones to feel left out when they haven’t seen a film and that more importantly, there is a solution to this problem- BookMyShow,” he adds.

BBH India chief creative officer and managing partner Russell Barrett mentions, “We have to thank BookMyShow for a clear, sharp and definite brief. The feeling of missing out in life is universal, it’s instinctive and in a world where new things trend every 15 minutes, it’s also more relevant now than ever. We have managed to tell a fun story in a memorable, modern and stark way. As a brand that lives in the world of entertainment, an ad for Book My Show, must also be, first and foremost, entertaining as well. This film, conceived of and written by Sapna and Yohan is simple, funny and celebrates both the fans and the movie really very well.”

  • Festival of Bharat to cast the spotlight on India

Festival of Bharat to cast the spotlight on India

MUMBAI: History repeats itself but this time there’s a twist. A London-based investor and indophile is spellbound by India but he’s got better plans. Cory Bixler has co-founded a festival that celebrates and aims to promote India’s culture to the world – The Festival of Bharat (FoB).

A semi-retired investor and global traveller, Bixler fell in love with the culture and people of India during various visits to India with his English partners. With an experience of over 30 years within the US government civil service & military, he has served on various national and international committees focusing on developing policy and guidance toward defence interoperability and the sharing of information.

The festival swiftly gained the backing of the ministry of tourism, government of India’s Incredible India! campaign, and is also supported by the Art of Living foundation. Bixler admits that he does not know enough about India, but that he feels how special India is and wants to play a pivotal role in its revitalisation. He hired a professional team and strategic partners to institute and manage FoB, as well as to help others who, like him, find it difficult to find authentic and easily accessible sources from which to learn and experience India in her truest essence.

To be held at Tijara fort palace in Rajasthan between 1-4 March 2018, the festival lineup will consist of live music, literary fests, talks and debates, yoga retreat, organic Holi party and organic food fest all rolled into a four-day event. FoB expects more than 10,000 people consisting of high net worth individuals, global travellers from 20 countries and 6 continents, public figures, CXOs and academics to visit. It will also be the first mega event in India to openly welcome the LGTBI (Lesbian, Gay, Transexual, Bisexual and Intersex) community.

BookMyShow has come on board as the official ticketing partner for the festival and there are no ticketing slabs for booking. The passes are priced at Rs 3945 for one day, Rs 7945 for two days and Rs 16,945 for three days.

The official announcement for sponsors will be made in the second half of December which would include a top Indian bank, a purified water specialist, a prominent FMCG brand, and one of India’s largest entertainment brands. App-based taxi-hailing service Ola may also come on board as the official partner. Bixler adds, “The world’s largest radio network is about to finalise the contract with us.”

Organisers will roll out TVC-like promos in cinemas across India that will run from January to March 2018.

When asked whether prime minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate or be present at the event, Bixler says, “We certainly hope so. But he is a very important and busy man and we have people in touch with the PMO, and hopefully, he will have time, but if not, we understand. Other dignitaries from his government will, of course, be there, and they have given us their support and blessings.”

The festival will be divided into three phases during the day. The day will begin with yoga sessions, meditation and activities that encourage relaxation and spirituality which will be monitored by The Art of Living teachers and volunteers. It will be followed up by debates, discussions and panels in the afternoon that would be educational and learning sessions, where the speakers will change every day for all four days. The days would be concluded by musical evenings where artists from around the country would come together to celebrate the music of India, from contemporary to traditional to modern music. The festival will also have an exhibition of ethical and useful Made In India products and service.

The speaker line up for the festival will see writer-diplomat and politician Pavan Varma, internationally known researcher, writer, speaker and public intellectual Rajiv Malhotra, Vedic teacher David Frawley and retired major Gaurav Arya among others. Among some of the performers will be renowned Indian classical flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Grammy-winning Hindustani classical music instrumentalist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Other performances will include crossover artistes Prem Joshua and Band, Aditya Prakash Ensemble known for its jazz and Indian classical music fusion, Sanskrit music band Dhruvaa Sanskrit Band, Chennai-based violinist and vocalist Karthick Iyer and his band and sitarist and a virtuoso cellist and composer Shubendra Rao and Saskia Rao De Haas respectively.

FoB’s food court will be one of many highlights at this four-day mega-festival, serving nutritious Ayurvedic vegan and vegetarian foods, street snacks and organic, non-alcoholic drinks. The organisers will ensure everything used on the venue during the event will be biodegradable and no plastic is left lying around and there is no wastage. Food and drinks will be served in sustainable containers.

The World Travel & Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated Rs 14.02 lakh crore or 9.6 per cent of the nation’s GDP in 2016 and the sector is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.8 per cent to Rs 28.49 lakh crore by 2027. About 88.90 lakh foreign tourists arrived in India in 2016 as compared to 80.27 lakh in 2015, recording a growth of 10.7 per cent. With more festivals that promote India’s rich culture and diversity, it will only lead to increasing tourists and consolidation of India on the global map.

  • BookMyShow’s entertainment biz gets a boost with Nfusion buy

MUMBAI: BookMyShow, after redefining the movies and events ticketing space, is on its path to become the ultimate entertainment destination for users — by making its fourth acquisition this year. The online entertainment ticketing company has announced that it has acquired Nfusion for an undisclosed amount in an all-cash deal.

Nfusion was set up in the Middle East in 2009 by Shoaib G.M. Khan, Sivagurunathan S and Prabhakar Reddy as a HD video-on-demand platform which allowed its users to stream videos online. While Shoaib (alumnus of BITS Pilani), designed, built and managed the end to end media platform, Prabhakar (alumnus of BITS Pilani and Harvard Business School) led the Product, Monetization and Business Development at Nfusion. Sivagurnathan (alumnus of BITS Pilani and IIM Bangalore) designed and managed the information security and infrastructure for Nfusion’s media portal.

Nfusion’s scalable tech solutions, especially CMS (content management system), will be key to the success of BookMyShow’s foray into audio entertainment. The acquisition not just provides BookMyShow a robust tech platform but also an experienced team which will provide a fillip to BookMyShow’s audio entertainment offerings. While the Nfusion team will be headed by Shoaib, Sivagurunathan will lead the Architecture and Devops teams at BookMyShow.

BookMyShow director Parikshit Dar said, “We have already established our video content vertical and are now excited to foray into audio entertainment through our offering ‘Jukebox’. The Nfusion team has brought with them immense experience, innovation capability as well as expertise in building and managing scalable tech solutions. With them and our music label partners, we look forward to offering the widest variety and possibly the best curated audio content to our users.”

Through Jukebox, BookMyShow already offers free music downloads to its users. Anytime users book movie tickets on BookMyShow, they are rewarded with music credits which can be redeemed to download their favorite songs on the Android or iOS app. Currently, BookMyShow offers over 1.5 million songs to choose from and has already been witnessing 300% growth m-o-m in the number of downloads.

To lead this vertical, BookMyShow has appointed Aditya Kuber as the associate vice-president – audio entertainment. He will report to BookMyShow CEO Ashish Hemrajani. Aditya will be instrumental in driving partnerships with music labels and distributors, creating exclusive audio content for BookMyShow users, and product marketing. He brings with him over 17 years of experience and has a demonstrated history of working across media, publishing, digital, and advertising.

BookMyShow had earlier acquired Chennai based online ticketing player TicketGreen in 2013. The company then acquired a majority stake in Bengaluru-based social media analytics start-up Eventifier in 2015 and Chennai based fan relationship management (FRM) solutions provider, Fantain Sports Pvt. Ltd. in 2016.

In 2017, BookMyShow acquired Hyderabad based online movie ticketing platform MastiTickets, invested in Pune based DIY platform Townscript and also acquired Mumbai based local food and restaurant recommendation engine Burrp.
