Sam Mendes turns down offer to helm next Bond film

MUMBAI: Sam Mendes, who directed the last Bond film Skyfall, has announced that he won‘t be directing the 24th James Bond film citing time-consuming theatre commitments.

“It has been a very difficult decision not accepting Michael and Barbar‘s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie,” Mendes said. “Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and king Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond,” he added.

Skyfall has crossed the $ 1.1 billion mark to become the highest-grossing film ever at the British box office.

Daniel Craig, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes will all reprise their roles in the forthcoming action flick that is to go on the floors early next year.

Danny Boyle quashes report of him directing a Bond film

MUMBAI: Slumdog Millionaire director, who drew in lots of kudos for putting across one of the most memorable moments of the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, has scoffed reports that he was contemplating to direct a James Bond film. He was appearing in an interview on BBC Radio 4‘s Front Row.
Asked if he‘d ever want to helm a Bond film, he averred, "No, I‘m not very good with huge amounts of money. Don‘t trust me with huge amounts of money. I did The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio. The film was a proper Hollywood scale budget and it didn‘t suit me."

The 2000 made film cost a reported $50 million. Although it turned to be a profit-making project in the worldwide box office, it fared poorly with critics.
"Certain people can handle that and I love watching those kinds of films," Boyle observed adding, "but I‘m much better with a smaller amount of money and trying to make it go a long way."
Other low-budget films he‘s directed include 28 Days Later, Trainspotting and Millions."

Craig trashes report of two-part Bond film

MUMBAI: British Daniel Craig has trashed reports of a possible two-part James Bond film after Skyfall. To prove his point, he has categorically said that there is no way a Bond film could be divided into two parts.
“No, I don‘t know where that‘s come from. It‘s impossible to do a two parter, I heard that someone was talking about that we‘re doing a two parter, but that‘s the first I‘ve heard about it,” Craig said in a statement.
“We can only do them one at a time, they take six months to shoot. You can‘t write one movie thinking about the next. All we‘re trying to do is get the next one sorted out and it‘ll stand on its own and if I‘m able I‘ll do another one after that,” he added.
The 44-year-old has played 007 in the last three installments of the British spy film franchise.
Rumors that Bond 24 and Bond 25 would present a storyline that crosses in two successive films first sparked when writer John Logan was confirmed to work on two more Bond films.
The twenty-fourth installment will likely begin filming at Pinewood Studios next year and the film is projected for a fall 2014 release.

  • Ben Whishaw is fourth to reprise character Q in latest Bond film

MUMBAI: Producers of the 23rd James Bond adventure Skyfall Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have confirmed that the character of Q will be making a welcome return to the Bond franchise. The role will be played by Ben Whishaw.
Said the producers, “It‘s a real thrill to confirm the return of Q in Skyfall played by the enormously talented Ben Whishaw. We are delighted to have this beloved character back in the series.”
With his inclusion, Whishaw becomes the fourth actor to play Bond‘s quartermaster affectionately known as Q. The role has been earlier reprised by Peter Burton as Major Boothroyd in Dr. No, followed by Desmond Llewelyn (in 17 Bond films between 1963-1999), and John Cleese (who appeared as Q‘s assistant R in The World is Not Enough. He was later promoted to Q in Die Another Day).
In Skyfall, Bond‘s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
Whishaw will be seen later this year in Cloud Atlas alongside an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess and Halle Berry, and in the BBC‘s Richard II. He will also be seen in the second series of The Hour for BBC in which he stars opposite Dominic West and Romola Garai.
