    Bhansali acquires remaking rights of Ramana

    MUMBAI: Sanjay Leela Bhansali has clinched the remaking rights of the 2002 Tamil blockbuster Ramana that has a strong anti-corruption message.


    Several prominent producers were vying for the Bollywood rights of the film that would have had a significant effect at a time when Anna Hazare was hogging the limelight with his anti-corruption drive.


    The film will be directed by A R Murugadoss, who is said to have already approached Shah Rukh Khan to play the lead.


    It may be recollected that Bhansali’s on-the set film Rowdy Rathod is a remake of the Telugu film Vikramarkurdu that features Vijaykanth in the lead. It was also remade in Telugu and in Kannada.

    Don 2 helps 2011 end on a positive note

    MUMBAI: The last week of 2011 has ended on a positive note with moviegoers flocking to watch Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan who had a less successful year than Salman Khan.

    The SRK starrer Don 2, a sequel of the earlier hit, benefitted with Christmas holidays to brave unfavourable reports. The movie, which collected Rs 753 million in its first week, added another Rs 192 million in its unopposed second weekend to take its 10-day tally to Rs 945 million.

    The collections include Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions.

    Kya Yahi Sach Hai, the solo release of the week, went haplessly unnoticed.

    Pappu Can’t Dance Saala collected about Rs 1 million in its second week; its two-week total stayed a paltry Rs 4.1 million.

    Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl added Rs 9 million in its third week, taking its net collections at the box office to Rs 333.5 million.

    The Dirty Picture rocked steady, collecting Rs 15 million in its fourth week; its net collection stood at Rs 809.5 million.

    Desi Boyz, the Hindi comedy drama, has netted Rs 414 million afer its five-week run, while Rockstar took its total collections to Rs 603 million in seven weeks.

    Salman Khan to do a love story for Rajshris

    MUMBAI: After doing a spate of action films like Dabaang, Ready and Bodyguard, Salman Khan is going back to Rajshri Productions once again for a romantic film.

    The film would supposedly be a love story in full Barjatya style in which Khan would again be seen in the role of Prem, a name synonymous with him in all the films he did with the Barjatyas.

    It is being said that Khan wanted Sooraj Barjatya to make a love story since he was tired doing a spate of action films of late. Barjatya, on his part, agreed to make a simple sweet romantic film. The film will have a single female lead.

    The cordial relation with Barjatya and Khan go back a long way. The filmmaker not only launched the star with Maine Pyaar Kiya, he also made Hum Aapke Hain Koun, one of Bollywood‘s highest grossing films of all times with him.

    It may be noted that Khan had a special appearance in Barjatya‘s niece Vidhi Kasliwal‘s Isi Life Mein.

    Raj Kapoor retrospective at MoMA

    MUMBAI: As part of a retrospective it has organised of Raj Kapoor, the New York-based Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will showcase eight classics of the legendary actor, director-producer. The retrospective, which will roll from 6 January, will go on till 16 January.

    Presented in 35 mm prints, ‘Raj Kapoor and the Golden Age of Indian Cinema‘ offers an introduction to one of the most ravishing and influential periods of world cinema.

    The exhibition is curetted by Noah Cowan, Artistic Director, TIFF Bell Lightbox, and organised by TIFF, IIFA, and RK Films, with the support of the Government of Ontario. It is organised for MoMA by Joshua Siegel, Associate Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA said in a statement.

    Largely unknown in North America, except to filmgoers of South Asian descent, Kapoor is revered not only in India but also throughout the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and beyond.

    Kapoor founded RK Films in 1948, and it became the most important Hindi studio of the post-Independence era-and the one most commonly associated with the nebulous and often misunderstood expression Bollywood.

    South African Tourism launches new ad campaign

    MUMBAI: South African Tourism has launched its annual advertisement campaign in order to promote the destination in India.

    The 60 seconds ad film captures various activities, destinations and travel experiences that one look can forward to in South Africa and is being screened across leading multiplexes and cinema halls.

    The nationwide campaign is being undertaken across seven key markets in India for a period of six weeks. The ad will be featured during Bollywood movies like Ladies Vs Ricky Behl, Agneepath and Don 2.

    South African Tourism country manager Hanneli Slabber said, “Given the fact that Bollywood movies are one of the strongest consumer influencers and attention drawers, it is the best time to leverage the medium to launch an advertising campaign. It is also an appropriate time to start an annual campaign of this scale, with the New Year round the corner a time when people are planning to go on holidays or keep aside a budget for summer holidays.”

    “South Africa as a destination is a complete family package, the nation provides various forms of activities and travel experiences for every age group. Our advertisement has been able to brilliantly capture the same. We are confident that the advertisements will definitely tempt the Indian audience to consider a holiday in South Africa”, he added.

    According to the official communiqué, South African Tourism has witnessed an exceptional 22 per cent increase in Indian tourist arrivals to the country between January-July 2011. The month of July witnessed a total of 8,609 Indian travellers visiting the nation compared to 7,043 in July 2010. There has been an overall increase of 38.2 per cent in Indian arrivals between January-July of this year vis-?-vis the previous year with 52,588 Indians visiting the country.

    South Africa saw more than 8 million tourist arrivals in 2010, compared to just over 7 million in 2009.

    MUMBAI: The two day conclave of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) concluded by welcoming the recommendation from Wizcraft International that the South Indian film industry should join hands to create a global platform that presents the South Indian film industry at key markets across the world.

    Sharing the IIFA success story wherein key global markets opened up for the Hindi film industry that led to a quantum growth, Wizcraft International founder-director Sabbas Joseph averred, “The talent in the South Indian film industry is enormous. We wanted to seize this opportunity to establish a platform for talent to be promoted and honoured on a national level and international level for South Indian films. Regional and Indian cinema have grown into a global phenomenon and we would surely look at promoting and leveraging them on a global platform through brand IIFA.”

    The IIFA story also demonstrated the attention that is being given to Indian culture and business by global counterparts. Akin to the Bollywood weekend, the weekend for the South Indian film industry would be a huge step towards recognizing the growing importance of South Indian cinema by celebrating it on a global platform, Joseph felt.

    Regional films have been well received at the Berlin film festival and have also won best film awards. With contemporary story lines, advanced technology and fresh talent in the regional entertainment world regional cinema is becoming popular. Films like Enthiran – Robot won the accolades of critics all over the globe.

    IIFA is one of the most respected South Asian film academies and its main highlight, the IIFA Weekend and Awards are India‘s biggest media event. In its 12 years around the globe, IIFA has forged relationships with countries, enabling the promotion of Indian cinema.     ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol‘ will release on 7 December, 2011. The film sees Tom Cruise return. The other cast members include Tom Wilkinson, Simon Pegg and also Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor.

    Telugu remake of Johnny Gaddar in offing

    MUMBAI: Remember the 2007 made Neil Nitin Mukesh debut film Johnny Gaddar. The film, not only got mixed reviews but got back the thriller genre back to Bollywood.

    The film, now to be made in Telugu, will be produced by Kubera Cinemas and directed by Lakshmikanth Chenna.

    Newcomer Krishi Arimanda will play Neil‘s role, while other actors include Sai Kumar and Gracy Singh.

    “Keeping new trends in cinema in mind I chose a subject that would attract the present generation and not just make a regular movie with three fights. So, we bought the official rights of Johnny Gaddaar from Reliance Entertainment.” Deepak Baldev of Kubera Films said in statement.

    Johnny Gaddar, directed by Sriram Raghavan, was a crime thriller depicting the story of a group of five men involved in gambling and other illegal businesses.

    The shoot of this untitled remake is already under way.

    MUMBAI: Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has said that he would make another film for children before the next edition of the International Children‘s Film Festival (ICFF).

    Speaking on the sidelines of the just concluded 17th International Children‘s Film Festival, organised by the Children‘s Film Society of India (CFSI) at Hyderabad, Bhardwaj said, “I have an intention of making a children‘s film, but not thought of a subject yet but I will definitely be making one which would be ready by the next international children‘s film festival here.”

    The director-composer, who made his directorial debut with Makdee in 2002 and followed it up with Blue Umbrella in 2007, said that he did not have any qualms funding the project. Bhardwaj made it clear that if anyone approached him with a good script (for children‘s film), he would not hesitate producing it too.

    Citing the success of films like Harry Potter and Tintin, Bhardwaj said, “Harry Potter and Tintin, released on many screens, have seen successes as they have attracted children and adults alike.

    Giving his impression of why do filmmakers not go in for making of films for children the filmmaker said that lack of distribution network compared to Bollywood commercial films could be one of the reasons for our producers not showing interest in making children films.

    Bhardwaj has been associated with the CFSI since 1994.
