London Paris New York to premiere in Karachi

MUMBAI: Ali Zafar, who shot to fame in the 2010 film Tere Bin Laden, is excited because his upcoming film London Paris New York is going to be premiered in Karachi on 8 March.

Two years ago, Zafar’s debut film Tere Bin Laden (2010) that the Pakistani singer-actor was co-distributing in Pakistan was banned three days before its release in the country for fear that Islamist extremists could use it as a pretext for terror attacks.

The ban followed even after the producers were willing to drop the word Laden from the title and release it as Tere Bin in the country. But despite all efforts, the film couldn’t be officially released there.

Zafar is confident that it won’t happen this time around. “There’s a huge buzz, people are looking forward to it. In fact, we’ve planned a big, red carpet premiere in Karachi on 8 March if we can get the requisite permission.”

Ali has been promoting the film extensively on Pakistan’s biggest TV network, Geo TV, which will be releasing the film in the country.

They decide to hangout together one evening in London and find that they are completely drawn to each other even as their future lies on separate continents. Bijoy Nambiar to direct two films back-to-back

MUMBAI: With the critical acclaim of his debut film Shaitaan behind him, Bijoy Nambiar has decided to direct two films back-to-back.

The first film, titled David, was initially planned to be made in Hindi. It has three leading men and women and hence required many prominent faces.

Apart from South stars Vikram and Jeeva, the director was not successful in signing on any Bollywood actor for the film, and is hence being forced to make it in Tamil. And that was apparently the reason why Vivek Oberoi was taken on board, apart from Tabu.

The second project will go on the floors once the director completes David. The film will feature Shahid Kapoor in the lead, though he has not yet signed on the dotted line.

Javed Jafferi takes to documentary making

MUMBAI: With the formation of his new company Indian Documentary Foundation, noted comedian Javed Jaaferi has taken a plunge into documentary making.

“Indian Documentary Foundation is a non-profit organisation that will help raise funds for financing and marketing documentary films, create awareness and raise the bar for Indian documentaries,” Javed said.

Earlier, he was the co-producer of Inshallah, Football, a documentary on the game of soccer. Now, Jaaferi hopes to create a market for such movies that act as an eye-opener and share hard-hitting information.

“Documentaries act as an eye-opener and say a lot about society, whether it`s Malegaon Ka Superhero or Final Solution. These films provide some amazing and hard-hitting information in a condensed form. There are so many different areas that they touch upon, which people are not actually aware of,” he observed.

The 48-year-old Jaaferi blames the ‘escapist’ attitude of people for the dwindling state of documentary filmmaking.

  • Mahesh Manjrekar forms new entertainment company

Mahesh Manjrekar forms new entertainment company

MUMBAI: Mahesh Manjrekar, in association with Pune-based realtor Aniruddha Deshpande, has formed a new company. Named Great Maratha Entertainment LLP, it will produce and market films and TV serials in Marathi.

“We wish to make Marathi films that will give returns on investments rather than try to get financial support from the State Government. Over 100 Marathi films are released every year. However, only few of them are able to recover the investment. We wish to change this scenario,” observed Deshpande.

Averred Manjrekar, “Though Marathi cinema has explored diverse subjects, it is far from the standards of Bollywood. Probably that is why it still does not enjoy patronage of teenagers and youngsters. Systematic channelisation of investments in Marathi films for having good production values, use of latest technology and intelligent marketing will bring up the overall standard of the Marathi films and will help capture audiences.”

The new company is ready with four films scheduled for release over the next six months. The company, which is also adapting the cult Marathi play Natasamrat in a film form, has plans to release around eight films a year.

The company is also planning to set up a modern studio soon and is looking for space between Pune and Lonavala.

While Manjrekar has written, directed and acted in a host of Marathi and Hindi films, Deshpande is the managing director of City Corporation Ltd, a Pune-based real estate company.

3 Idiots success makes Bollywood eye China as potential market

MUMBAI: After the successful run of the Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots in China, Bollywood has started eyeing the country as a potential market.

Talking on the subject Vidhu Vinod Chopra quipped, “The Chinese audience identified with the societal and parental pressures on today’s generation of young students seeking success. This has demonstrated that universal themes will cross cultural and linguistic boundaries.”

Chopra also divulged that he was already receiving enquiries from China for his next film, Ferrari Ki Sawaari, slated for release at the end of April.

He hoped the success of 3 Idiots would see more Hindi-language films released in China, where only a handful of foreign films hit the silver screen every year.

Before 3 Idiots, the 2010 Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan was shown in China.

Indian films were popular in China in the 1940s and 1950s but later ties between the two countries turned sour.
