  • Shark Tank India: iDreamCareer bags Rs 1.10 crore deal from Ritesh Agarwal & Aman Gupta

Shark Tank India: iDreamCareer bags Rs 1.10 crore deal from Ritesh Agarwal & Aman Gupta

Mumbai: Shark Tank India Season 3, which debuted on 22 January 2024, remains a riveting watch, showcasing a dynamic array of entrepreneurs and their compelling pitches.

The latest episode of Shark Tank Season 3 witnessed iDreamCareer founder Ayush Bansal & co-founder Squadron Leader N Praveen Kumar bagged a deal of Rs 1.10 crore from Ritesh Agarwal & Aman Gupta. The founders introduced the sharks about the need for career guidance among students. With the vision to help more young students achieve their career goals, it is the first-ever career counselling platform that took the stage of Shark Tank India 3.

iDreamCareer is India’s leading career counseling brand that offers comprehensive career & college guidance to students in schools & colleges. It has empowered one million plus students and has partnered with top corporates, private schools, and government institutions to make career guidance accessible for students, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds.

During their pitch, the sharks were impressed by the social impact created by the company. However, Peyush Bansal (founder of Lenskart) was not convinced by the business model of the company and that the company should look at expanding one of the business models.

Sharks Aman & Ritesh resonated strongly with the problem that iDreamCareer is solving; to give career & college guidance to young students.

Later the company got a deal of Rs 1.10 Crore at 60 crore valuation from Aman Gupta (founder of boAt) & Ritesh Agarwal (founder of OYO). The deal comprised Rs 60 lakh equity and the rest of Rs 50 lakh as eight per cent interest debt for two years.

iDreamCareer’s last funding round was in 2022 where it raised Rs 12.50 Crore from Menterra Social Impact Fund, Gray Matters Capital & Artha Impact.

Tailored for aspiring business leaders, this audiobook serves as a tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit, offering inspiration and guidance beyond the boardroom. Here, Audible brings you curated words of wisdom and learning from these industry leaders.

The ‘Did Not Quit’ medal is worth more than gold

Sugar Cosmetics CEO Vineeta Singh shared a valuable lesson for aspiring entrepreneurs—aim for the “did not quit” medal. In her insights, Vineeta stresses the significance of perseverance, highlighting that reaching the finish line is more crucial than finishing first. She encourages entrepreneurs to confront self-doubt, emphasising that worst-case scenarios are often less dire than imagined. Speaking about her journey, Vineeta reminisced, “We (Vineeta and her husband) plotted these worst-case scenarios. Although we know that often it’s not as bad as we are imagining and fearing. For me, the worst case would’ve been losing the last 30 lakh rupees I’d set aside in the bank and start again from square one.” Adding on to the same, she said, “I think self-doubt and a lack of self-confidence is probably the worst kind of rock bottom because there’s nothing that anybody can say that can turn it around for you.”

Frugality fuels value: Make ROI your mantra

boAt CMO and co-founder Aman Gupta shared the mantra of being “fast, fearless, and frugal.” Reflecting on the importance of Return on Investment (ROI), Aman emphasises the necessity of frugality not as a choice but as a fundamental approach to business. Aman’s advice captures the essence of their business model, “Frugality is at the core of our company’s business model. If there is frugality in everything that you do, you’ll be able to create value for stakeholders.” Having worked at legacy companies, before advancing to the forefront of India’s start-up revolution, Aman has many learnings as takeaways. “Start-ups have to learn from legacy companies how to make money, run big companies, and think in a structured manner. Legacy companies need to learn from start-ups how to be nimble,” Aman said. Embracing failures made all the difference, he explained. “I don’t think you need 2-3 successes, you need one. I’ve had five failures but one success has made me who I am. I am a common man, a middle-class guy and I feel that an entrepreneur should be grounded first and foremost. I relate to people who hustle. Nowadays entrepreneurs want the spotlight in the media, and there’s a God-syndrome that kicks in. That’s very bad for the company and the entire ecosystem. Be ready for ups, be ready for downs, but be yourselves.”

Be organised and embrace optimism to balance work and life!

Emcure Pharmaceuticals executive director Namita Thapar, offers a profound perspective on the vital attributes necessary for success, extending far beyond the areas of entrepreneurship. Beyond the commonplace notions of organisation and optimism, Namita delves into the essence of these qualities, asserting that they are indispensable for anyone navigating the complexities of modern life. She asserts, “Not just entrepreneurs, but every person needs to have these. Being organised and optimistic are the bedrock that allows individuals to seamlessly juggle various responsibilities and maintain equilibrium between work and life. In the relentless chaos of everyday life, these qualities become the anchors that foster a sense of calm and resilience.” Namita’s insights resonate as a timeless guide for individuals seeking not only success in their professional endeavours but also a harmonious and composed existence in the face of life’s myriad challenges.

Read people, not just the cards you’re dealt: A poker lesson in early-stage investing

Shaadi.com founder and CEO Anupam Mittal draws inspiration from his entrepreneurial family background. He attributes his risk-taking attitude to his father, who took on economic responsibilities at a young age, and his adventurous spirit to his mother. Drawing parallels between poker and real-time investing, Anupam highlights the importance of understanding people in early-stage investing: “Just like in poker, in real-time investing, you need to read the room. You have to read the other players. In poker, there’s a big fallacy that you’re not playing cards, you’re playing people and the cards just happen to be there. The same thing applies to early-stage investing, you’re trying to understand people.”

Agility over planning: Fall fast, learn faster

Car Dekho CEO and co-founder Amit Jain shared a concise yet powerful lesson: “Fall fast, learn faster.” His words echo the sentiment that in the fast-paced world of business, being an executionist is more valuable than being a strategist: “You can’t take too much time in learning and over-planning; your agility and nimbleness will suffer. It is better to be an executionist rather than a strategist.”

Initially, Amit and his brother decided to start an IT outsourcing company because they were good at coding. Following this, a big disaster struck and it was largely the fault of the brothers. “GirnarSOFT went bankrupt when the stock market crashed in 2009. The Jain brothers had invested close to Rs. 1.5 crore in stock trading and the whole amount was wiped out in 5 days.” Amit said. “We were vetting at 10x leverage, meaning they had positions worth 15 crore rupees. When the Sensex fell from 18,000 to 6,000 – this is something that nobody could ever have imagined. But as an entrepreneur, if you fall down, you get back up again.” He said early-stage learning was very important for him. “Starting and growing a business can be a challenging and difficult process, there will be setbacks and failures along the way and it can be easy to become discouraged or lose motivation. However, persistence allows a founder to stay focused and keep moving even when faced with obstacles.” The company was back on its feet in less than a year and the brothers swore to never dabble in stock trading ever again. Amit learnt never to use money from corporate accounts for such risky funds. He had to show the same agility when he launched CarDekho.

Scrapbuddy founder Sachin Garg expresses excitement about the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with Wahter is a significant stride towards a greener and more sustainable future. Scrapbuddy aims to make a lasting impact on plastic waste reduction in Delhi-NCR.”

  • Talented’s BoAt campaign blends iconic 90s track with Ranveer Singh’s subconscious

Talented’s BoAt campaign blends iconic 90s track with Ranveer Singh’s subconscious

Mumbai: Ever heard of this feeling called frisson? It’s the physiological effect of chills or goosebumps that come from a piece of music or from any aesthetic experience, more commonly referred to as an ‘eargasm’. In its latest for boAt, Talented.Agency explores and visualises this feeling, featuring bollywood’s biggest audiophile–Ranveer Singh.

Nirvana by boAt is India’s #1 audio brand’s first-ever sub-brand launch in the premium segment, targeted towards more discerning music listeners. It boasts of 120 hrs of battery life, incredible Active Noise Cancellation, and the #1 audio brand’s signature sound–boAt’s customised bass enhanced EQ suitable for listening to songs.

Conceptualised by Talented, directed by Reema Maya, and produced by Catnip, this very frisson-worthy film also presents a remake of iconic 90s track–Hai Raama reimagined as Hai Yaara, set as the background score. The series has two more films slated to go live early February.

“At its best, advertising is supposed to make you feel something deeply. So instead of straight-up plastering the features of the range, the films give you a trailer of what it feels like to listen to your favourite music using Nirvana by boAt. We took ‘show, don’t tell’ extremely seriously. Achint, the celebrated composer of Scam 1992’s title track, did a phenomenal job of recomposing and reigniting nostalgia, and we can agree it’s an earworm!” added Talented founding member and creative Pooja Manek.

“The atmosphere on set was electric – Ranveer was a bright ray of sunshine, and everyone including the security outside the studio was grooving to our song! Ranveer Singh is a director’s dream, it was such a pleasure to direct him! It’s always exciting to work on a project where everyone is passionate about creating something different. I mean, Ranveer Singh vibing to Nivana eardopes against supersuns and supermoons? It’s definitely not a traditional approach to advertising. We wanted to create a very visual film to encapsulate the idea of an eargasm, and through the different films in the campaign, we have explored different visual interpretations of it.” said Catnip director Reema Maya.

boAt head of brand marketing Vedansh Kumar added, “As an audio brand, it only makes sense for us to overthink the background score well before getting into production. We picked this classic for its nostalgia, its sexiness, and its unmissable appeal with our target audience. We’re also immensely thrilled to have roped in B-town’s most discerning ear, Ranveer Singh, as the face of this range”

You can catch these films on Shark Tank Season 3 and a host of other channels through February. The hoardings stand tall across Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore until the end of the month.

  • GoKwik saves eCommerce brands Rs 130 Cr in RTO losses for 2023

GoKwik saves eCommerce brands Rs 130 Cr in RTO losses for 2023

Mumbai: Brands on the network of eCommerce enabler GoKwik have saved up to Rs 130 Cr in losses from return to origin orders (RTO) in 2023 so far.

According to data released by GoKwik, direct-to-customer (D2C) brands on its network benefited from its interventions to arrest RTO occurrences. Brands saved over 16 lac orders from being returned to origin. As a result, they also saved over Rs 24 Cr in reverse logistics costs owing to orders being returned while in transit.

“We are constantly building deep-rooted intelligence & interventions that will help brands cater to the cash-on-delivery-loving shoppers while also mitigating RTO losses smartly. Our solutions are constantly committed to solving deep-rooted problems of the eCommerce industry at the source while also ensuring we contribute to becoming the eCommerce gateway of India. By seeing success stories of merchants, we are rest assured that we are heading in the right direction” said GoKwik co-founder and CEO Chirag Taneja.

RTO or return to origin is when undelivered orders are returned before delivery causing a major setback to operations for e-commerce brands as they add to logistics costs, inventory blockage, loss of true conversions and leaking profitability.

The chances of RTO are significantly higher in cash-on-delivery (COD) orders than in prepaid orders. GoKwik offers a range of solutions backed by data and analytics that can predict customer behaviour and help sellers prevent RTOs while ensuring expansive COD serviceability across regions.

Through GoKwik-led interventions, brands also had over 16 lac products readily available to be shipped which would have otherwise been in transit for 20-30 days leading to inventory blockage and damage, data released by GoKwik shows.

Fashion brands saved around Rs 15 Cr, electronics brands around Rs 61.7 Cr, beauty brands around Rs 2.75Cr, and footwear brands around Rs 5.5Cr in inventory blockage owing to GoKwik interventions. Moreover, among these categories, electronics saw the highest reduction in COD RTOs with 28 per cent. Fashion brands recorded an 11 per cent drop in COD RTOs, footwear recorded a 16.6 per cent drop, and beauty and personal care saw 10 per cent.

Around 40 per cent of the brands in the GoKwik network continued to increase their COD share by 16 per cent and reduced COD RTO by up to 18 per cent.

Homegrown consumer electronics brand boAt saw up to a 32 per cent drop in RTO rate and a four times increase in COD gross merchandise value with the help of GoKwik’s interventions. Footwear brand Attitudist also recorded a 15 per cent reduction in RTOs with these interventions. Boult Audio further brought down RTOs by 40 per cent and Fireboltt by 30 per cent respectively.

Many other brands including Swiss Beauty, The Man Company, Neeman’s, Wallmantra, and Lenskart were able to expand their COD serviceability pan India while containing RTO rate.

GoKwik’s smart suite of solutions helps brands start COD, expand COD, reduce return to origin and contain return to origin depending on the stage of COD serviceability their brand is in. GoKwik is committed to solving these problems at the source by risk-based interventions such as adding extra layers to order completion to avoid RTO, behavioural analysis of the shoppers, risk profiling and placing pre-order interventions such as COD captcha, COD confirmation prompts, prepaid discounts and more.
