    Miramax appoints ‘Black Swan’ EP David Thwaites as VP film

    MUMBAI: Miramax has appointed independent producer David Thwaites in the newly-created position of vice president, film, effectively immediately.

     

    Reporting to Miramax executive vice president of film & TV Zanne Devine, Thwaites will head Miramax’s film production and development activities, as the studio continues its push into all new content areas, including film, television, acquisitions and co-productions.

     

    “I’m thrilled to be joining the fantastic team at Miramax. I can’t wait to begin working on Miramax’s rich and diverse development slate, and I look forward to bringing in new projects for all of us to dive into,” Thwaites said.

     

    Devine added, “We are very excited to boost our growing production and development activities with an industry executive of David’s caliber. David has great network reach, creative intuition and production savvy.”

     

    Thwaites most recently produced Crouching Tiger II: The Green Destiny. He also served as co-president of production at Phoenix Pictures, where he led the development of many projects like Black Swan, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, Shanghai, License To Wed, Miss Potter and All The King’s Men.

     

    Miramax’s next film is Mr. Holmes, which is directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon and starring Academy Award nominees Ian McKellen and Laura Linney. The movie is set to release on 17 July, 2015. The 9th Life of Louis Drax with Jamie Dornan, Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon is also in the release pipeline.

    Biblical Epic Noah by Darren Aronofsky set to release in India

    MUMBAI: Director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) was fascinated by the compelling story about Noah since a very young age, and is all set to present his take on the larger-than-life story of courage, sacrifice and hope, titled Noah based on the popular biblical stories. Paramount Pictures recently released the first pulse-racing trailer of the film, which has attracted amazing response from the audience across the globe.

     

    The film boasts of a stellar cast, comprising of Academy Award winners Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) as Noah and his wife, Naameh, respectively. It also features Oscar Award winner Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) and the ‘Harry Potter’ actress, Emma Watson. The director, Darren Aronofsky, who has given the world remarkable award winning films like Pi, Black Swan and The Wrestler, had been working on the screenplay of the epic since 2004.  

    The adventure packed film has spectacular VFX with mass scale production. The film features Noah having visions of an apocalyptic deluge, taking measures to protect his family and saving the innocent animals from the coming flood. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save God’s creation from the devastating flood. Noah and his family build a massive ark, large enough to give shelter to two of every type of animal, who, when the time is right, appear at the foot of the great ship to board. What follows is a battle for Noah’s Ark, so that the storm can be survived.

     

    With the film due for a worldwide release next month, filmmaker Aronofsky has certainly left the audience looking forward to the grand cinematic experience. Presented by Paramount Pictures, the film is slated for release on 28 March by Viacom18 Motion Pictures in India.

    Vincent Cassel replacing Philip Seymour Hoffman in Child 44

    MUMBAI: Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Mesrine, Ocean’s Twelve and Thirteen) has been tapped as a last-minute addition to Summit’s now-filming Soviet thriller Child 44. The Cesar-winning thesp is replacing previously cast Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film which has been filming since June under director Daniel Espinosa (Easy Money, Safe House).

     

    Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, and Joel Kinnaman also star in the tale of a military cop investigating a series of child murders in 1950s Stalinist Russia, adapted by Oscar-nominated Richard Price from Tom Rob Smith’s bestseller.

     

    Child 44 is the first book in Smith’s trilogy featuring protagonist Leo Stepanovich Demidov, played by Hardy in the pic. Ridley Scott is producing Child 44 for his Scott Free Productions with Michael Schaefer and Greg Shapiro. The film is co-financed and exec produced by Worldview Entertainment, whose Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich are executive producing along with Douglas Urbanski. Lionsgate’s Erik Feig and Jim Miller are overseeing for the studio.

     

    After his turn in Danny Boyle’s Trance this year, Cassel will next be seen in Christophe Gans’ Beauty and the Beast playing the Beast to Lea Seydoux’s Belle. He is repped by CAA and Agence Adequat.

  • Media One appoints Black Swan for creative duties

    MUMBAI: Kerala-based start up agency Black Swan India has won the creative duties of Media One, the upcoming general entertainment channel in Malayalam.

    Black Swan India will be responsible for the 360 degree campaign, predominantly print, outdoor and activations which cover Kerala as well as GCC (Gulf Co-operation Council) markets.

    The account win comes after a multi-agency pitch.

    Media One deputy CEO M Sajid said, ‘‘Black Swan clearly understood the principles Media One stand for and presented a creative platform that goes along with the kind of brand image we want to portray.”

    Black Swan India MD and CEO Raman P Namboothiri said, “Media One is a one-of-a-kind channel and our campaign reflects its uniqueness. It is an exciting brand to work on and the best thing that happened to Black Swan ever since its inception.”

    Media One is operated by Madhyamam Broadcasting Ltd and offers a mix of entertainment and news based programmes. Media One TV is headquartered at Kozhikode with news bureaus in New Delhi, Dubai, Riyadh, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Malappuram and has Dr Abdussalam Ahmad as its CEO.

    Chilean miners story on big screen

    MUMBAI: The story of the Chilean miners who were trapped underground for more than two months is soon to have a big screen version.


    The 33 miners have sold the rights of their story to producer Mike Medavoy, it is understood. The film would recount the remarkable plight of the miners who were trapped for 69 days after the San Jose mine, they were working in, collapsed near Copiapo, Chile. 


    Incidentally, Medavoy has produced films including Shutter Island and Black Swan.


    Miner Juan Andrew Illanes called the project “the only official and authorized film about what we lived in the San Jose mine.”


    The miners are collectively represented by William Morris Endeavor Entertainment.
