  • Raaz3 3-D: Special effects save the day

Raaz3 3-D: Special effects save the day

MUMBAI: The Raaz legacy continues even after a decade. But when it comes to most Hindi films, sequels usually don‘t have anything to do with the predecessor except cashing in on the title of a successful film. Raaz3 3-D, like earlier films, is also a supernatural thriller. The story having little new to offer, the film‘s draw is the brand equity of the title, Emraan Hashmi and special effects in 3-D format.

It is a film awards ceremony and the one who has worshipped all the gods, kept all the mannats and tied all sorts of sacred threads, Bipasha Basu, rises to collect the award for the best actress even before any name is announced. When the name of the winner is announced, it is not her but a relative newcomer, Esha Gupta. Shattered Basu loses all her faith in God and takes to a totally anti-God route, that of the world of the dead, to help her dethrone Gupta and reclaim her top position in the film world.

Hashmi is a successful film director. He is the protégé of Basu, the number one heroine who has taken him from a spot boy and an assistant to the position of the topmost director. She has also been having an affair with him for some years away from the media glare. But while Hashmi is now on top, Basu is losing her ground gradually as Gupta takes over her place. Basu is fanatic about her status and at no cost would she let Gupta take it away. There is a reason beyond professional jealousy: Gupta is her half-sister, being the daughter of her father‘s paramour. Basu feels that Gupta has deprived her of all things that she could have got from her father, things that were rightfully hers. Her view is that Gupta not only took away her father and her benefits but is now also taking away her career.

Basu is advised that her gods have failed her and the only way she can get at Gupta is through the world of the dead. To execute her revenge with Gupta, she ropes in Hashmi as her accomplice. He is totally under her spell and madly in love with her. She wants Hashmi to cast Gupta in his next film and use the opportunity to serve her water from an evil soul. Every time Gupta is fed that water, she is subjected to bad dreams, hallucinations and other horrific experiences that drive her mad. This is Basu‘s ultimate objective: to convince the world that Gupta is insane so that her producers back out.

Gupta starts losing grip on her life and is driven to the point where, at one party, she imagines a horde of cockroaches attacking her while she is in the loo. Exasperated, she streaks across the floor, making a dash for the open arena full of invitees; a just case for everyone to brand her as mad. Hashmi sees her plight but he is guilty of being a party to this treatment of Gupta. The inevitable happens and he falls for the vulnerable Gupta, something that Basu had not counted on.

The story is predictable so it is for the 3-D and special effects to make the difference in this film. And, though Raaz 3 is not really scary, it does manage to give the viewer a jolt a few times thanks to its well-executed special effects. In fact, Raaz3 is a 3-D film with finesse thanks to Prasad and the supervision by the Weta experts. Photography is very good. While the background score by Raju Singh is effective, one can‘t say much about the songs, which have limited appeal. Vikram Bhatt has handled the film well despite having few characters to play with. The film offers the best role to Basu and she emerges tops despite playing a negative role. Hashmi is his usual self. Gupta does a satisfactory job.

Raaz3 3-D has opened to a very good response at multiplexes and should continue to hold its own to end the weekend on a happy note.

  • Aishwarya Rai, Arjun Rampal and Bipasha Basu to grace Cannes fest

Aishwarya Rai, Arjun Rampal and Bipasha Basu to grace Cannes fest

MUMBAI: As in the past, several luminiaries from Bollywood are scheduled to be present at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival to be held from 16 to 27 May. Among the notables would be the likes of Aishwarya Rai, Arjun Rampal and Bipasha Basu.

Rai is most likely to grace the French film festival again this time. She has been attending the festival since 2002 as the global face of L‘Oreal.

Rampal is expected to make an appearance at the Festival as the ambassador of liquor brand Chivas, the official partner of the event. He is likely to be accompanied by his designer friend Rohit Bal. The actor had recently expressed a desire of showcasing his upcoming film Heroine at the Festival.

Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and co-produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Bhandarkar, the film has Kareena Kapoor and Arjun in the lead roles. Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami will also be seen in pivotal roles.

Incidentally, last year the makers had announced Heroine with Rai as the female lead, but she opted out of the film due to her pregnancy. The director then replaced her with Kareena Kapoor.

Bipasha may also attend the festival to promote her debut international film Singularity based on the first Anglo-Maratha war of 18th century colonial India. Directed by Roland Joffe, Singularity has been lined up to be showcased at the Cannes film fest as part of a promotional drive.

Incidentally, the actress had walked the red carpet in 2007 to promote her film Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal along with her co-star John Abraham.

Copyright case against Jodi Breakers makers in Bombay High Court

MUMBAI: The release of The Jodi Breakers is said to be in a limbo with Universal Pictures International France and Ors (a co-producer of Heartbreakers and a part of American entertainment company NBC Universal Inc) filing a case against producers Prasar Visions in the Bombay High Court for infringement of copyright. They have also asked for a compensation of Rs 500 million.

It has been reported that the Bipasha and Madhavan-starrer has been allegedly inspired from the French film Hertbreakers, starring Romain Duris and Venessa Paradis. It is also reported that Insia Dariwala, a relatively unknown writer-filmmaker, claimed to be the original owner of the idea behind the film.

It so happened that when several Bollywood filmmakers including Karan Johar were negotiating with the makers of the French film, the producers were surprised to see the promos of Jodi Breakers, the plot of which was strikingly similar to their film.

Accordingly, the French producers have filed the case against five people – the producer, director Ashwini Chaudhary, the writer and the processing lab. They have also questioned Dariwala’s claim that the producers stole her idea.

The Neolegal Associates (a leading intellectual property firm which handles litigations for Hollywood studios) is representing the producers of Heartbreakers in the Court case.

Other films that were caught copying Hollywood content were UTV that made Shoebite, based on Manoj Night Shyamalan‘s Labour of Love, Ravi Chopra‘s Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai that was a copy of Twentieth Century Fox’s My Cousin Vinny, and the makers of Knock Out that was copied from the Twentieth Century Fox film Phone Booth.

  • Players makes for dull viewing

    Players makes for dull viewing

MUMBAI: The search for subjects for films seems to be getting more and more desperate as producers and directors take recourse to sequels and remakes of old movies, regional movies as well as foreign movies. Players, in this event, is inspired by a Hollywood caper movie, The Italian Job (made twice; 1969 and 2003) where a bunch of specialists form a team to steal a cache of World War I-era gold worth billions.

Producer: Burmawala Partners, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.
    Director: Abbas Mustan.
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Bipasha Basu, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sikander Kher, Omi Vaidya, Johny Lever, Vinod Khanna.

But  Players is what happens when a star is expected to make up for everybody and everything else, including the script!

Abhishek Bachchan is a master criminal specialising in high value heists. He next wants to rob a train carrying gold from under the nose of the Russian army, which is escorting this special train. As in all such films, he needs a team of experts in various skills. Vinod Khanna, a past master at heists, helps him put the team together. On board come Bobby Deol, a magician; Sikander Kher, an explosives expert; Bipasha Basu, an automobile wizard who can attach turbo rocket jets to an age old train engine and make it fly on tracks (!); Neil Nitin Mukesh, a computer hacker; and Omi Vaidya, a gifted make-up and get-up ace. Also on standby are Sonam Kapoor, also a computer hacker and Johny Lever, who can devise and put together any kind of vehicle on four wheels.

The team embarks on the job by hiring a train which runs parallel to the gold-laden train and the heist is successful. Going by heist movie guidebook, it is time for twists and turns and breakups as well as betrayals. One of the team members has greed greater than his due share in the loot and he attempts to finish the rest of the team and vanish. The latter part is all about one-upmanship and getting the gold back.

Both Hollywood versions of The Italian Job had a running time of between 100 and 110 minutes, Players is stretched to 2 hours 30 minutes and this is its first drawback. Secondly, the extensive planning stages and computer mumbo-jumbo, which not many cine-goers care for, also makes for dull viewing. The ultimate major problem is the star cast, which comprises those lacking draw at the box office, are not quite capable of carrying off two and a half hours of drama, and lack of excitement or enthusiasm they show carrying out the job.

Yes, the film has great visuals and finesse as well as well-executed action and stunt sequences but the credit for these goes neither to the writers nor the director duo. Whatever is left to them is nothing much to write home about. Songs in the film are not only bad; they could easily have been dispensed with. Editing is so slack as to be non-existent. Of the technical aspects, cinematography deserves mention. In the cast, the one who does best and helps hold the film together in parts is Johny Lever, a fact which says a lot about the others. Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Bipasha Basu and Sonam go about their parts routinely. Neil Nitin Mukesh tries but lacks in varying his expressions. Omi Vaidya is okay. Sikander Kher looks sincere in his efforts. Vinod Khanna has little to do.

Players is a case of just about everything going wrong with a film, from script and execution to casting and public response.

There is an age old belief in the industry that films released on the first Friday of a new year always flop and Players may continue that myth.
