Bindass set to explore new youth themes

MUMBAI: The youth of India today believes in purposive action and are restless for change at all levels, be it their own lives, society or circumstances surrounding them.

Inspiring young adults today, youth network bindass actively rolls out initiatives that surround them. Exploring different youth themes of love, relationships and empowerment, the channel now plans to add new themes to its content portfolio – fame and achievement.

Currently with three hours of original programming, bindass plans to add more hours to its content portfolio in the coming months.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Disney India Media Networks VP and head – content and communication Vijay Subramaniam says, “In the next six-twelve months, we will increase our original hours of content quite significantly. Plans are currently under way.”

The channel is currently exploring themes like love and relationships with Emotional Atyachar, Yeh Hai Aashiqui, and the theme of empowerment with Halla Bol and Zindagi Wins. It now plans to enter into reality formats to tap into the theme of fame and achievement.

Subramaniam believes that for bindass, the first protocol has always been finite fiction. Recalling the core thought behind the programming, he explains, “While we were looking at fiction as a format, it was important to know the themes that resonate with young people. Based on our research insight, we decided to pick the themes of love and relationships first.”

Going on the same lines, the channel launched shows like Pyaar Ka The End and Love By Chance. The channel now aims to move to the theme of entertainment and will accordingly zero in on the format of the show.

Currently bindass is working on non-scripted and reality formats, which it will soon announce officially. Moreover, Subramaniam further reveals that in the near future, the channel will also be looking at re-telling classics, thus strengthening its content portfolio even further.

“There are a lot of interesting formats that we are working on. Our creative strategy is to always work with different themes that are relevant and resonate well with young people. Based on that, we choose the format that best delivers impactful entertainment to them,” he concludes.

  • 12 years on, ‘Roadies X2’ continues to enjoy strong audience base

12 years on, ‘Roadies X2’ continues to enjoy strong audience base

MUMBAI: It’s been more than a decade but the show still stands strong. While one would think that a reality show that provokes its guests non-stop on national television, would be doomed at the outset, MTV Roadies, even in its 12th year has kept its audience glued to their television sets.

The show continues to rule the genre, thanks to two factors, one, impressive numbers and two, strong audience base available for the programme.

Just as any other reality show, this one has its own audience (though not as big as one on a GEC), a digital presence, merchandising units and marketing campaigns.

Even after ruling the small screen in the youth space for 11 years, this year too the show has proved its might. Season X2, which hit the television screens with the audition phase on 24 January has already become the number one youth reality and fiction show.

It had an impressive opening as it clocked around 175 TVTs compared to other shows like Sadda Haq on Channel V with 165 TVTs, Love By Chance on bindass with 128 TVTs and Dare 2 Date on Channel V with 65 TVTs in the week four of TAM TV ratings. The ratings are in CS 15-24 AB in HSM markets.

In the sixth week, the show garnered 139 TVTs.

According to MTV India EVP and business head Aditya Swamy, the franchise has lived happily for 12 seasons and Roadies X2 has ripped the format open. “This season, we went for a complete makeover. From bringing in a new format to new judges to brining in some unexpectedness,” he informs.

The channel states that the cult show has witnessed a hike of 60 per cent in viewership as compared to the last season. Moreover, its reach increased from 1.1 per cent in episode one to 2.2 per cent.

According to Swamy the major viewership of the show comes from the HSM markets, mostly from Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The key highlights for the success of the show, according to Swamy are: Core understanding of its target audience. “We brought in fresh twists to keep the old audience surprised and new audience hooked. We dared to be different by getting in personalities that the youth can easily relate to. From one Bollywood personality to one sportsman and television personality while Rannvijay continues to garner female attention,” he informs.

Before the launch of the show, the channel continued to build engagement via other mediums as well. It launched a mobile Torrentz app where users can download complete episodes and watch them at their own convenience for free.

To further up the entertainment quotient for the youth, the channel will be launching Roadies Fantasy League – which for the first time will see a sport-like fantasy team competition for a reality show.

It will also have the Roadies Prediction application – which will have a betting environment where people can bet on outcomes of the show.

MTV will continue doing Audiosodes – Podcasts where people can catch up on what happened in an episode. To top it all, it will come up with a section called Fast Forward on its website which is like a highlights package and has the entire episode crunched in around seven minutes.

On the digital front, the official Facebook page of Roadies X2 garnered 18,347 likes at the time of filing this report. On Twitter the buzz is strong too with the show’s official page delivering around 64.3 thousand followers.

This season Hero MotoCorp continues to be the title sponsor and Vivo Smart Phone has come onboard as the associate sponsor along with traditional long term partners like Mountain Dew, Ceat tyres etc. In all, the channel has roped in 12 sponsors this season.

“The evolution of a show is a big reason for its success. Many thought that Roadies is incomplete without twin hosts Raghu and Rajiv and the new judges won’t be able to pull off the show very well. But the numbers says it all,” says a media planner.

While last year, Bindass gave one individual an opportunity to intern at UTV Motion Pictures after a selection process, this time round the channel is aiming for a larger group of people along with MICA. Dream Start will give the 10 most deserving candidates an opportunity to be a part of a specially designed month long course in Crafting Creative Communications at MICA.

Following the initial shortlists, the selected students will be interviewed by a panel of MICA professors. Based on the discussion, top 10 candidates will be picked to join the course. The course will take place from 15 June to 15 July, 2015. The winners will be announced in May, 2015.

Queried about the partnership with MICA, Disney India VP – content and communications, media networks Vijay Subramaniam said, “We have always associated with partners who share the same values and beliefs as we do and MICA, along with a strong reputation and high credibility, matched our aspirations and supported us with our vision.”

He further believes that this course will help young creative minds to make an investment in themselves within the realm of creative communications. “We intend to spruce up their learning with a well-drawn out syllabus and curriculum through a period of one month, which can help them shape their career.”

Talking about how the initiative will help in building the channel’s brand equity, Subramaniam said that the channel seeks to play a meaningful role in the lives of young adults by being their friend. “Bindass’ content and initiatives reflect the dynamic lives and realities of the world that the youth lives in and converse with them through entertainment that enables the young minds to take purposive action,” he said.

On the marketing front, the channel first kicked off promotions on its digital platforms in December, 2014 and has recently taken to mainstream promotions on television to create awareness about the show.

“In addition to this, an initiative such as this one requires a deep level of commitment and engagement from the consumers and it is essential to reach out to the right mix of youngsters who can benefit from the opportunity,” asserts Subramanian.

Additionally, the channel will also be visiting 400+ colleges across the country, reaching out to students who are at the cusp of evaluating and sharpening their focus on skill sets, which can drive their career. Bindass will also target popular youth hangouts to promote Dream Start.

HP partners with Bindass for ‘Bend The Rules’ campaign

MUMBAI: Bindass, over the years has understood the pulse of India’s youth and has become their friend and companion while entertaining them with content that is both purposive and engaging.

The channel in association with Hewlett Packard (HP) launched a new campaign – ‘Bend the Rules’ featuring brand ambassador, Deepika Padukone. The campaign celebrates how millennials in India ‘Bend the Rules’ by taking the unconventional road to success.

Millennials strive for success at an early age using the power of technology. HP is inviting them to share their stories by uploading a video on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube using the hash-tag #BendTheRules, of how they have bent the rules to achieve success.

A winning entry from India will get a chance to share his/her inspiring story with a larger audience through a short film which will be aired on Bindass and its YouTube channel.

Talking about this association with HP, Disney India VP revenue, media networks Nikhil Gandhi says that the channel wanted to try a different approach in order to deepen the engagement level with the youth. The campaign connects with the ideas and philosophies of Young India. It celebrates the young generation’s ability to ‘Bend the Rules’ and achieve success by taking the road less travelled.

Padukone, the brand ambassador for HP India is associated with this campaign. As someone who decided to pursue acting and leave behind a promising badminton career, she is familiar with treading the unconventional path to success.

Also featuring in the campaign is the HP Pavilion x360, a value-packed convertible PC, which easily converts from notebook, to stand, to tent, to tablet mode. With optimised touch-screen performance and beats audio, the device is ideal for the productivity and entertainment needs of consumers.

Backed by in depth research, Bindass has executed successful shows and campaigns which not only engage young India but also enable purposive action. “We are using this understanding to create the right approach to strengthen our partnership with HP and deliver Bindass ‘Bend The Rules’ to strengthen their engagement with the youth,” says Gandhi.

What made HP associate with bindass for the campaign? According to HP India head of marketing, printing and personal systems Lloyd Mathias, HP’s focus was to reach out to the Indian youth. “#BendtheRules is in the DNA of young India and we wanted to amplify the HP brand philosophy with a partner that understands youth. Brand Bindass is positioned as the enabler of purposive action and that holds really well with brand HP. We wanted to leverage Bindass’s reach on TV and digital to speak to the Indian youth and hence the association,” he says.

Mathias believes that by partnering with Bindass, it will help HP become more relevant to its audience and build a community around shared interests and passions. The bend the rules philosophy of HP will get validation and engagement through this association within its shared TG.

The initiative is spread across multiple platforms including television, print, digital, out of home, webisodes and Vine videos. Additionally, an extensive social media campaign covering Twitter and Facebook is also in place which rests on both Bindass and HP’s social media platforms.

  • Bindass to ‘Play’ on youth demand

Bindass to ‘Play’ on youth demand

MUMBAI: “We want to build on our strengths,” is what Disney India MD Siddharth Roy Kapur believes in and is the reason for the soon-to-launch music channel, Bindass Play, from the network.

Disney India will replace UTV Stars with the new channel which will go on air from 1 October as it wants to build on the youth-targetted brand. “Currently, Bindass is at a very good place and the viewers are aware of our values. Hence, we want to expand on it with the new music channel,” says Kapur.

Early this early Bindass had launched a new brand film – ‘B for Change – to reflect the sentiments of today’s youth who want to explore but at the same time don’t hesitate in going forward to bring about a change.

“Bindass has always spoken the language of youth and it is the only homegrown youth entertainment channel in the genre to have won the loyalty of youngsters in the country. Music is very close to this section of the audience,” says Media Networks content and communication VP and head Vijay Subramaniam.

He adds, “Hence, the unique thing about the channel would be that it will be inspirational and will celebrate the journey of adulthood as a friend and empower the youth.”

But does this mean, Bindass will now only focus on storytelling? ‘No’, comes the response from Subramaniam. The youth entertainment channel will continue to showcase music but only for five hours (7 am to 12 pm) and on relationship based programmes rather than the edgy content like Dadagiri it focused on, earlier.

The latest entrant in the Rs 900 crore business caters to the age group of 14-34 with the tagline ‘Saath hai toh baat hai’. The 13 shows are mood mapped with high energy song in the morning to slow tempo in the night, and with many of them like Tia’s Request, Tweet Meri Beat, Ishq Messenger among others allowing the viewer to choose his/her playlist through social media.

Digital medium plays an important role for the brand and hence, it has tried to capture the youth through it. “As and when newer opportunities come from the medium we will try to engage with them as well,” says Subramaniam.

The network is already in talks with four major brands for the channel. “Advertisers are happy and will want to associate with the channel as it is extension of the brand Bindass,” says Media Networks revenue vice president and head Nikhil Gandhi and will sell the ad slots at “healthy” rates.

However, media planners consider it as ‘just another channel in the genre’ as there are too many players in the genre. “Rs 500 for a 10 second ad should be the rate for the channel,” says a media planner.

UTV Stars was launched in 2011 and showcased popular Bollywood content including music and feature-based programming and since it was not able to catch viewers’ attention, the network now is playing safe by launching a channel focusing on the music genre, point outs another media analyst.

Nonetheless, the channel is very upbeat about its new offering and believes that it will be able to strengthen its position in the category.  An in house team worked on the look for the channel and Subramaniam believes that it will be the ‘sexiest looking channel’ on television.

  • Don’t wait for a change, #BtheChange

    Don’t wait for a change, #BtheChange

MUMBAI: So far bindass has launched two shows namely Halla Bol and Change Aayega, Hum Laayenge that mirror society on issues that are important for young people, such as women harassment at public places. However, bindass recently produced a video as part of a social experiment throwing light on prevalent social issues like eve-teasing and women assault. The video received a whooping 1.68 lakh hit within five days and is snowballing across all the popular portals.

This video is an effort to show the inaction and apathy that women have to face when in such a situation and it is an important part of the larger ‘bforchange’ campaign. “It goes to prove the strong connect and relevance that such meaningful entertainment has for youth. We are both proud and humbled by the response to the video from our viewers. At bindass we are working consistently to create meaningful entertainment on issues and topics that matter to Young India’, says Disney India media Networks content and communication head and VP Vijay Subramaniam.

Bindass’s larger effort is to also make our shows an equally powerful enabler of purposive action. “Though the videos were purely created as digital content since our TG also resides online, going by its popularity we now plan to take it on-air too”, he adds.

Click here to watch the video

In order to provide a platform for the youth to actually go ahead and act, bindass has launched bforchange.com, a dedicated website that has more than 50+ NGOs listed and seeking volunteers.

Not only does the video serve as an eye-opener, it also adds a curiously hilarious element of surprise towards the end.

  • Take a chance at love with ‘Love by Chance’

Take a chance at love with ‘Love by Chance’

MUMBAI: You see your parents bickering at one another, and yet not being able to see each other in pain. Rather confusing, isn’t it?! Makes you wonder, how did two people, who are poles apart, stumble upon one another only to have their “happily ever after”? Well, chance encounters do happen, and they do lead to ‘happily’, ‘ever’ and ‘after’ (not necessarily in that order!).

Inspired by true stories of people who have found love through serendipity, Love By Chance, a new original 26-part anthology series to be aired on bindass is aimed to evoke just the type of ‘love’ly feeling that will pluck at heartstrings every week.

Starting 31 May, the series will be telecast every Saturday at 7 pm, showcasing a ‘falling in love’ story between two young people who stumble into love just by chance!

Disney India executive director – content group Indrajit Ray opines, “Since the success rate of most Indians in securing themselves a date is lower than you might think, we decided to create a show that will not only entertain these insecure hearts, but also provide them with a learning experience that will make these timid few let go the barriers they’ve created for themselves.” Let go and believe. Believe in your knees going week. Believe in that momentary stimulation in your nerves. Believe in love, by chance.

To evoke the feeling of first love and chance encounters, bindass has roped in “a pool of writers” spearheaded by Vaibhav Modi of Bolt Media (a division of Balaji Telefilms). With a process that started 7-8 months ago, the network execs at bindass brainstormed on ideas circulating around the channel’s sole motto, “enabler of purpose of action” and pitched them to the production houses, which led to a script orders, and from those, a few pilots were ordered.

The pilot of Love by Chance was shot a few months ago, and then screened privately across the country. Based on the optimistic audience reviews and early critical acclaim, Love by Chance was ordered for a 26-episode first season. The show is being used as a prototype by bindass soon to be followed by more scripted light-hearted romantic series that are just as entertaining as they are routed in reality.

“We are aiming at the 15-34 year age group. Well, there are older people who want some nostalgia induced retrospective programme to reinvigorate their young spirit,” continues Ray.

bindass’ marketing strategy for Love by Chance is a week long campaign starting from the series premiere with its off-air creative being by Marching Ants. The show also has a unique soundtrack to complement the anthology series. Composed by Abhishek Arora (Yeh Hain Aashiqui), the network has released a promotional music video for the series.

Through its Facebook page/Twitter handle and Instagram account, bindass aims to push stories which will be all about chance encounters between two people. These will be in the form of Facebook posts in the Love by Chance template and further posted on Twitter. Approximately 15 such short stories will be pushed to generate interest and also to crowd source such stories. The aim is to get #LoveByChance to trend and all the tweets will be curated.

  • UTV Stars to don new look

UTV Stars to don new look

Disney India, riding on the success of its youth entertainment channel-bindass, is all set to unveil a refreshed channel offering with a new brand proposition complemented with fresh packaging, new content and a new brand name, that will further fortify the bindass brand.

The channel will continue in its present avatar till September 2014. The change is in keeping with Disney India’s long-term strategy of building a set of formidable brands in India.

“Disney India is committed to serving audiences with differentiated multi-brand offerings in the television space. To that end, we are refreshing our product offerings in the youth genre, using brand bindass to create a new proposition for UTV Stars that is complementary to the bindass brand, and centered around themes and passions that drive Young India,” said Disney India vice president – content & communication, media networks Vijay Subramaniam.

“In one of the most dynamic media industries in the world, it has been our constant endeavor to continually refresh our offerings to stay ahead of the curve and serve our audiences and stake holders with quality content that raises the bar on engagement and relevance,” added Disney India vice president – revenue, media networks Nikhil Gandhi.

  • Channel V gets bigger, better, post refresh

Channel V gets bigger, better, post refresh

MUMBAI: “As politically incorrect as it sounds, may we just say we’re kicked,” says Channel V EVP and general manager Prem Kamath

In an interview with indiantelevision.com, Kamath expresses happiness at the way things have shaped up for the channel after its two big refreshes.

The first happened in July 2012, when Channel V repositioned itself as a youth general entertainment channel with a focus on reality.

The second, on 25 November, 2013, when it came up with a cool new logo, a tagline ‘Correct Hai’ and four new shows i.e. Paanch: Don’t Get Mad Get Even, It’s Complicated, Confessions of an Indian Teenager (finite) and Sadaa Haq (daily).

“The response has been huge, both in terms of viewership and what we have managed to achieve in the market. Specifically in terms of numbers, after the last refresh, we have seen 52 per cent growth, that too within three weeks of it, which is unprecedented within the category in my mind,” he says.

Channel V is now a good 40-50 per cent bigger than its nearest competitor, courtesy breakout hits like Sadaa Haq and Paanch. Within a week of launching these shows, the channel witnessed 14.3 TVM vis-a-vis Bindaas’s 11.1 TVM and MTV’s 8.5 TVM, going by TAM week 48 ratings. It recorded a 42 per cent growth in just one week.

With increased ratings came advertisers. “Yes, more than the sheer number of advertisers, I think, for channels like us, where revenues are directly linked to ratings as we have a lot of clients on CPRP deals, a jump in ratings almost immediately results in an upswing in monetization as well,” says Kamath.

This included advertisers targeting a slightly older age group. “So, even advertisers targeting a slightly older age group started coming on board in a significant departure from earlier times,” he says.

Unlike other TV channels which divide content into weekdays and weekends with weekdays focussing on dailies and weekends on one or two episodes, Channel V took a very different approach and started doing bi-weeklies.

“We understood clearly that given the nature of the audience and their viewing habits, this group of viewers tends to be fickle and gets bored rather quickly. It is not interested in watching the same story drawn out over a period of one year or two and a half years which is what dailies typically do,” Kamath goes on to explain.

So, three of the four new shows were bi-weeklies, running for two episodes a week and for a finite period. From the beginning, they were conceptualized as shows with 52 episodes that would run for 26 weeks, period. The entire script too was fleshed out before taking the first shot.

“This innovation and scheduling has worked tremendously for us. Paanch has been a breakout hit. Sadaa Haq has been a daily format, but again within the daily format, we were clear that it is a one-year story line and it begins and concludes within a year and within a year, you will see Sadaa Haq being replaced as well,” he says.

In week 2-5, Channel V reported an average 12,640 TVTs compared to Bindaas’s 8,946 TVTs and MTV’s 6,367 TVTs. In week 6 of TAM ratings, Channel V scored 2,691 TVTs, whereas Bindaas got 1,321 TVTs and MTV stood at 1,216 TVTs. “It’s been Channel V vs. Channel V, what with MTV and Bindaas less than half the break TVT ratings,” says Kamath.

What’s more, Channel V was in the lead with audiences in the age group of 15 to 34 years in week 8 of TAM ratings (Channel V 17,738 TVTs; Bindaas 13,535 TVTs; MTV 10,194 TVTs and 9XM 8,657 TVTs).

According to Kamath, bi-weeklies have multiple advantages. “They let us tap into producers who would have otherwise not come on television. Because it is finite project, people are willing to come on-board because it does not take up their entire lives, which a daily tends to do,” he says, adding the ability to experiment with more concepts and genres as another advantage.

Paanch is a taut revenge thriller which we won’t be able to pull off on a daily basis and continuously. It has multiple advantages and lets us tap into newer concepts and newer genres as well as newer talent, which is why it is working well for us.”

Bi-weeklies have worked so well for the channel that ironically, the feedback has been to make them dailies. “Unfortunately, we can’t,” asserts Kamath. “The nature of the show is such that it is not possible for us to produce this quality of content, with this quality of writing and this pace of narration if it becomes a daily. And then, there will always be a compromise we will have to make.”

    Road ahead

Once Confessions of the Indian Teenager ends, it will be replaced with another bi-weekly drama. In April, the channel plans to launch two more shows, but Kamath refused to divulge details.

“It is a little early to talk about these shows, but within a couple of weeks’ time, we will be in a position to talk about them. But around the first or second week of April, you will see two new shows being launched,” he says.

Going forward, the channel is planning on creating something called E-IndiaFest, reason being IndiaFest zonals usually start around November and conclude by Jan or Feb leaving nothing on the plate between February and November.

“There is a set of things we are planning which people can compete in but can do online. Because we have so far been operating on formats which are essentially dailies, the season break never tends to happen. These are continuous shows that are run aground once ratings stop. But it is something that we now have the option of doing. So with Paanch for example, we are already beginning to script the second season,” he explains.

There are plans to air the second season of the show, a year later or maybe earlier, depending on how it is scheduled.

“For us, it is the process of continuously adding programming. At present, the channel produces four slots a day and plans to add more in the coming months. Towards the end of May, you might see us opening a fifth slot. Getting it into the next fiscal, the plan is to add more slots to it,” he reveals.

“We are clear that the direction we are going in is fairly stronger and the kind of traction we have got is huge. But we also know that probably in order for us to really break out in the larger leagues and for us to become a full-fledged GEC in our own right, we will need much higher levels of the show programming. That is the process we have consciously undertaken, one step at a time. So, even when we re-launched three years back, we started with one show a week and the channel has slowly built up from there to the point that it is today,” Kamath signs off.

  • bindass launches ‘Halla Bol’ to inspire youth to fight back

bindass launches ‘Halla Bol’ to inspire youth to fight back

MUMBAI: Early this month, youth channel, bindass, came up with a brand campaign ‘B for Change’. This came in after almost three years after its ‘What I am’ campaign.

And taking its promise of “Enabler of Purposive Action” a step further, the channel has launched a latest show Halla Bol. The first show under the binadaas’ new brand campaign, Halla Bol, will showcase stories inspired by various real life instances and celebrates the victories of women who stood their ground to emerge as heroes.

“Halla Bol is a show with a significant change in narrative in the way women can fight real life crimes which are a part of any young woman’s everyday life. bindass’ shows such as Emotional Atyachaar and Yeh Hai Aashiqui have already established a bench mark when it comes to representing young change-makers from our every-day life. Today’s youth are the do generation, they are restless to act and that’s exactly what you will see in the show. We plan to extend the flavor of the ‘b for change’ campaign with ‘Halla Bol’. These are stories of women who’ve fought back for themselves and that’s what every young Indian should do”, says bindass director content Shalini Sethi.

The show will be hosted by popular television actor Karan Tacker, who will take the viewers through the hard-hitting stories and also provide a man’s perspective. “I am delighted to be a part of this show. ‘Halla Bol’ is an eye-opener for all the young people of our country, especially for men whose value system allows them to be unjust and for women who tolerate injustice in silence. This show, illustrates how a little strength and self-confidence goes a long way in bringing about meaningful change”, says the actor.

In its first episode bindass Halla Bol will showcase a blazing issue prevalent in the society – that of eve teasing.
