  • Colors slots ‘Bigg Boss 9’ at 10.30 pm; brands iffy?

Colors slots ‘Bigg Boss 9’ at 10.30 pm; brands iffy?

MUMBAI: Promoting the ninth season of its reality show Bigg Boss as ‘double trouble,’ Colors has piqued interest by slotting it late in the 10.30 pm band as opposed to the earlier 9 pm time slot.

However, the media planning and buying community as well as advertisers are somewhat skeptical about the new timing for the popular show fearing that viewership might go down in the 10.30 pm slot.

According to information available with Indiantelevision.com, the reason behind putting the show in the 10.30 pm slot was that Colors’ prime time shows Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat (9 pm) and Swaragini (9.30 pm) are doing exceptionally well in their respective time slots. WhileSwaragini has continuously managed to maintain its position amongst the top five progarmmes in Hindi GECs, Chakravartin Ashoka Samrattoo makes appearance in the top five every now and then.

“Changes in the time slot will definitely influence the viewership as well as the ad rates for the show. The ad rates this year are likely to go down as compared to last year’s rates. Brands are unhappy with the channel’s decisions as prime time gives more visibility to them,” said a senior media planner, on condition of anonymity.

Another media planner added, “The late hour time slot will certainly pose question marks on brands’ willingness to come on board as well as the ad rates pricing. But on the other hand, Salman Khan’s brand value has also gone up substantially. So while the time shift of Bigg Bosswill impact viewership and subsequently the ad rates in the initial periods, I feel that the broadcaster will pick it up by putting captivating content. Overall Bigg Boss will retain its charm.”

Colors has roped in SnapDeal as the title sponsor for the show, powered by Oppo Mobile India and driven by Maruti Swift.

While the opening episode of Bigg Boss 9 on Sunday, 11 October will be aired at 9 pm, subsequent episodes of the season will be telecast from 10.30 – 11.30 pm.

With Bigg Boss 9 being slotted at 10.30 pm, Colors will do away with the repeat telecast of Ishq Ka Rang Safed at 10:30 pm. On the other hand, Code Red in the 11 pm slot will also go off air, according to the sources. Whether the channel will reschedule the show is not known as of now.

With the tagline of ‘Double Trouble,’ Bigg Boss 9 and the new time slot does give some wind to the speculation that some of the show’s content may be risqué and not suitable for family viewing as per the country’s television guidelines. While the contestants’ antics coupled with Khan’s inimitable hosting style has managed to pack a punch more often than not, this season of Bigg Boss seems to promise doubled the fun.

That said, it will be interesting to see whether the change in time slot for Bigg Boss 9 will work for Colors or not and whether brands show the same enthusiasm for the show as for its previous seasons.

  • China’s maiden ‘Big Brother’ shot on Endemol Shine India’s sets

China’s maiden ‘Big Brother’ shot on Endemol Shine India’s sets

MUMBAI: The Indo-China memorandum of understanding (MoU), which was signed between the two countries while Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China earlier this year probably showed its first practical prominence as Endemol Shine shot China’s maiden Big Brother season in India.

Big Brother’s Indian adaptation – Bigg Boss is shot in Lonavala, which is in the outskirts of Mumbai. The sets in Lonavala are erected at a factory leased by Endemol. However, the set, which was used to shoot for the first ever Chinese edition was that of the Kannada version of Big Boss. It was on these sets, which were rebuilt to suit the international version where Chinese contestants dramatically fought to win the first ever title.

Endemol Shine India, which has a rich experience of producing eight seasons of Bigg Boss so far with the ninth season set to launch in October, facilitated the Chinese branch of the production house with a 400 member crew. There were 40 representatives from China and together they executed the first edition of Big Brother China, which will be telecast by online platform Youku Tudou.

This is the first time in the show’s global history that it will beam on a digital platform. China’s Youku Tudou platform garners traction of 580 million unique visitors every month and was the ideal choice to showcase the show in order to get maximum eyeballs.

According to sources close to the development, the planning was going on for a very long time and the two counterparts held rounds of talks before the final execution. The decision to shoot in India under the guidance of experienced people who have been associated with various editions of Bigg Boss was primarily to use the infrastructure and expertise, which will eventually result in huge cost savings.

The Chinese team brought in their creative directors, story editors, and remote camera operators, whereas the rest was executed by the Indian crew. The huge lingual differences within the team comprising members from the two respective countries were erased by translators. “Most of the communication were happening in English,” a source present on the sets of Big Brother China in India informs Indiantelevision.com.

According to a senior official in the production fraternity, the two most populous country of the world shaking hands to execute an entertainment project is massive boost for the media and entertainment industry. “I hope this is just the beginning and we have many more such collaborations going forward. Such associations are rejuvenating and certainly a matter of pride for the industry,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

In India, Bigg Boss 9 is set to unveil soon on Colors and the show with Salman Khan as the host is eagerly awaited. “It was not the Bigg Boss India sets, which were used for the Chinese edition shoot. The India set is exclusively used only for India edition,” said a source close to the development.

Endemol Shine China managing director William Tan, Youku Tudou senior director Amy Shundong Xu, Rebecca De Young, who was once a producer of Big Brother UK and Endemol India CEO Deepak Dhar were amongst those spotted around the sets. Big Brother China shoot got over on 18 September, 2015 and the Chinese team will be flying back immediately.

  • Double Trouble in Colors’ ‘Bigg Boss 9’ with Salman Khan

Double Trouble in Colors’ ‘Bigg Boss 9’ with Salman Khan

MUMBAI: Colors’ controversial yet loved reality show Bigg Boss season 9 is all set to hit the Indian television in October to be hosted by Salman Khan yet again. The first promo of Bigg Boss 9 is out and the audience has lapped it up. Within 24 hours, the promo received more than 60,000 views on YouTube.

What’s more, Colors has also roped in three major sponsors for the ninth season. Bigg Boss 9 will be presented by SnapDeal, powered by Oppo Mobile India and driven by Maruti Swift. It will be produced by Endemol.

This season, Bigg Boss 9 has the tagline – ‘Double Trouble,’ which has been hinted at in the promo. While the contestants’ antics coupled with Khan’s inimitable hosting style has managed to pack a punch more often than not, this time round Bigg Boss seems to have doubled the fun in its ninth season.

The show’s promo features a couple in the house wearing the same shirt and Salman Khan is seen peeping through the door hole. He then looks into the camera and mouths catchy phrases like ‘Double hoga trouble’ and ‘Bigg Boss nau is going to be wow.’

The promos also hint that this season will be tougher than its predecessors. Bigg Boss 9 is likely to go on air from 11 October, soon afterJhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded wraps up.

While the channel has not yet revealed the time slot for the show, it is pertinent to note that previous seasons have been aired in the 9 pm prime time slot. Colors currently airs Chakravarti Ashoka Samrat at 9 pm and Swaragini at 9:30 pm, which are both raking in good ratings for the broadcaster.

It now remains to be seen how Colors rejigs its programming line-up to pave way for Bigg Boss 9.

It may be recalled that last year, Khan had to leave the show midway because of prior commitment towards work and was replaced by choreographer and filmmaker Farah Khan, who hosted the extended edition of Bigg Boss season 8 – Halla Bol.

  • Sony & Colosceum to bring Israeli reality show ‘Power Couple’ to India

Sony & Colosceum to bring Israeli reality show ‘Power Couple’ to India

MUMBAI: Going by the popularity of reality shows on Indian television, Sony Entertainment Television is now looking at bringing the Israeli reality show Power Couple to India.

To be produced by Colosceum Entertainment, the show is slated to launch on Sony in October. However, sources say that the channel is still in the process of finalizing the launch date.

It is likely that Sony may pitch the show against Colors’ popular and well-established reality drama Bigg Boss, the new season of which is slated to go on air from 11 October, 2015.

After taking Israel by storm since the launch of its first season, internationally acclaimed show Power Couple follows 10 celebrity couples, who will undergo a rigorous test of love along with their better halves. Power Couple format owner – Israel-based Dori Media – has taken the show to countries like China, South Africa, Portugal, Brazil, Germany, Italy and the US.

  • Salman Khan jailed for 5 years in hit-and-run case, gets two days’ interim bail

Salman Khan jailed for 5 years in hit-and-run case, gets two days’ interim bail

NEW DELHI: Actor Salman Khan was today convicted by a Mumbai Sessions court for five years for killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run case.

The 49-year old actor who had been charged with culpable homicide was directed to be taken to jail today itself.

However, the Bombay High Court granted him interim bail for two days after his case was argued by senior counsel Harish Salve, who said no person could be jailed on the basis of a partial order. He said his client had only been read out the operative portion.

The dead man, 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan, was among five people who were run over in the incident. Late on the night of 28 September 2002, Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser hit the American Express Bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai.

Khan had sought to say his driver was behind the wheel, but Judge DW Deshpande said the actor was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol,” he told the actor as soon as the court proceedings began.

Khan has been booked under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (rash and negligent driving); 279 (rash driving); 337 (causing minor injuries); 338 (causing major injuries) 427 (negligence), and under Motor Vehicle Act Sections 34 (a), (b) read with 181 (driving vehicle in contravention of rules); 185 (driving at great speed after consuming alcohol).

The arguments by lawyers on his sentence went on for about three years, during which time who was dressed in a white shirt remained calm and composed. His family and friends inside the court were hoping that he would get a jail term of three years or less.

But Khan broke down when the judge pronounced his sentence and he was visibly upset when his sisters tried to comfort him.

One of Bollywood’s busiest stars having appeared in more than 80 Hindi-language films, Khan’s jail sentence is bound to affect the film projects he was working in.

The prosecution alleged that Khan had been driving the car while drunk, both of which charges the actor denied in court in March. But many witnesses disagreed.

A constable attached to Khan’s security detail said in a statement to the police that the “drunk” actor had lost control of the car. The policeman died in 2007 of tuberculosis.

In April, Khan’s driver told the court that he had crashed the car after a tyre burst but the court did not accept that version.

Khan had been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in October 2001 and arrested but granted bail. In May 2003, the Court rejected his plea to drop culpable homicide charge and but in June 2003 the Bombay High Court dropped culpable homicide charge but said he be tried for rash and negligent driving.

Khan will also be taken for a medical examination before being sent to jail. His lawyers had told the court today that he had heart and neurological problems. The judge had remained unmoved.

Khan is the second actor to have gone to jail recently, the earlier being Sanjay Dutt.

In addition to his acting career, Khan is a stage performer and an active humanitarian through his charity organisation Being Human.

The actor has two film releases lined up for this year namely Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo.

Apart from films, the actor also hosts the television reality show Bigg Boss on Colors.

  • Mi Marathi to strengthen digital presence; ropes in ABP Majha’s Nilesh Khare

Mi Marathi to strengthen digital presence; ropes in ABP Majha’s Nilesh Khare

MUMBAI: After attaining and retaining the number one spot in the genre for the past two weeks, Marathi news channel Mi Marathi is now looking at strengthening its digital presence.

The channel has roped in former ABP Majha anchor Nilesh Khare, famous for his show Bigg Boss and given him the mandate for the same. In his new role as Mi Marathi editor – digital, Khare will be working with a new team to get the channel’s digital plan rolling.

Khare, who joined the channel last week, will not just be heading the digital team but will also be hosting a show Marathi Bigg Boss on the channel.

“We have a news channel and a newspaper, but now we want to strengthen our digital presence. We have recently launched an app but we will not be taking a regular digital route,” Mi Marathi editor in chief Ravindra Ambekar tells Indiantelevision.com.

The plan, currently in its nascent stage, is to make the digital platform interactive. “We have done a lot of research and found out that one sided communication is not really helpful. While people have switched on notifications to keep themselves updated with news, this has now reached stagnation point. Hence we are looking at making our platform more interactive, where people can voice their opinions,” adds Ambekar.

Mi Marathi will have a separate digital team, headed by Khare. “We should be launching the digital platform in the next six months,” informs Khare.

Talking about his decision to join Mi Marathi, Khare says that it was the young and enthusiastic team that attracted him to associate with the channel.

Mi Marathi will soon start shooting for Marathi Bigg Boss with Khare. “It was a popular show, which he worked on during his stint with ABP Majha. We will be bringing that on our channel now,” informs Ambekar.

Mi Marathi plans to take the show international and plans are afoot to shoot the first episode in Dubai. The programme will feature Maharashtrian entrepreneurs across the globe. “This will be a yearlong show. While currently it is at conceptualization level, we have already shortlisted around 13 entrepreneurs and industrialists in Dubai and so we will start shooting there next month. Post that we will go to the US as well,” informs Ambekar.

Abby Awards: Linen Lintas wins grand prix for Dabur Vatika campaign

GOA: Lintas Group’s Linen Lintas won the grand prix at the Abby awards that were held at the 10th edition of Goafest. The agency won the metal in the Direct Campaign using any two form, for Dabur Vatika premium shampoo.

The tagline of the campaign was Brave and Beautiful. The award was handed over to Linen Lintas by ad man Prasoon Joshi.

TBWA Sri Lanka was the only international winner on the second day of the Abby awards.

The radio category saw Contract Advertising and Scarecrow Communications as dominants with 11 and 12 metals respectively. Jury head and Contract Advertising NCD Ashish Chakraborty said, “We had more entries this time, which is an encouraging sign but I must say that as a jury, we were underwhelmed as the surprise quotient was completely missing. The quality of writing was good, production quality was also there but we need to push ourselves more. Internationally there is much better quality of work and we also need to get inspired and improve ourselves.”

The broadcast category jury was led by IBN 18 Network CEO Avinash Kaul. A total of 14 Golds, seven Silvers and five Bronze metals were given away in the category. With four Golds, Colors and Viacom 18 were the most prominent in the category. The quality of work in the category was very good as more Gold metals were bestowed than Bronze and Silver. Big Boss, Code Red and Udann Bindas Play were amongst the winners across various categories.

Print Craft and PR were amongst the other categories for which awards were given to various winners.

  • Double dose of action in ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi 6’

Double dose of action in ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi 6’

MUMBAI: It seems to have become an unwritten rule of the game. Now-a-days broadcasters have started to realise that reality shows can run by getting celebrity hosts to garner more eyeballs.

A big celebrity host is a prerequisite to launch a reality show in India. Celebrity participants, though important, are not mandatory; but the bigger the host, the better.

From Salman Khan and Farah Khan in Big Boss to Shah Rukh Khan for a game show – India Poochega – Sabse Shaana Kaun in the yet-to-be launched general entertainment channel (GEC) ‘&TV’ under the Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) stable. Likewise, there are many more names in the basket.

After having popular celebrity faces like Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar as hosts for its adventure based reality show – Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi, last year the show got a new face on-board.

The director, who is known for reviving the action genre on the celluloid, Rohit Shetty who hosted the fifth edition of the series, will continue to host the sixth season as well.

According to Colors CEO Raj Nayak casting in this season is the best so far. “All faces are popular. Moreover, the number of stunts has increased and you will see a lot of variations. Last year, it was the best season ever and this time we hope it surpasses that.”

The show, which goes on air from 7 February every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm, will see Ashish Choudhary, Hussain Kuwarjerwala, Harshad Arora, Iqbal Khan, Sana Khan. Sagrika Ghartge, Rashami Desai, Asha Negi, Ridhhi Dogra, Meiyang Chang, Rakesh Kumar, Siddharth Bharadwaj, Nathalia Kaur and Archana Vijaya battling it out.

The contestants will stay in a ‘Darr ka Ghar’ this time to keep the entertainment quotient up. Adding a twist to the take and urging the contestants to push their boundaries will be last year’s finalist Salman Yusuff Khan who will be seen as a challenger.

Endemol MD Deepak Dhar said, “Khatron … will be riveting for the viewers as it has been taxing for the contestants. We have doubled the dose of danger, action and entertainment this season while introducing new concepts and themes to make the show a truly engaging watch. Rohit Shetty’s contribution in making the show a complete blockbuster has been unparalleled and as the show prepares for launch, we are all set for the true action to begin.”

According to sources, the budget has also gone up by about 25 per cent as compared to the last season. While last season the production of the non-fiction show was pegged at Rs 50-55 crore, this season media planners estimate it to be around Rs 60-65 crore.

Media planners believe that the show will definitely continue to work wonders for the channel, thanks to the celebrity power status and power packed stunts that will keep viewers hooked onto the show.

  • Electronic Media Monitoring Centre to go up to 1500 channels by 2017: Rathore

Electronic Media Monitoring Centre to go up to 1500 channels by 2017: Rathore

NEW DELHI: The government hopes to increase the capacity of the state-of-art Electronic Media Monitoring Centre (EMMC), which currently monitors around 300 television channels, to 1500 by 2017.

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore told Parliament that these 300 channels are chosen randomly out of the 839 channels beaming into Indian homes.

He said that the aim was to first achieve the target of monitoring 600 channels within the next few months, while answering a question about reality shows playing with the sentiments of the people.

In a reply to a supplementary question about young children being used in dance shows, Rathore said that there are a large number of channels and there is undoubtedly a race to attract as many eyeballs as possible. Therefore, most of these channels, no doubt, are walking a very thin line and working in that grey area. However, there is a freedom of expression. Therefore, the government does not want to impinge on the freedom of expression. Keeping in mind the morality, decency and various levels of acceptance on television, certain guidelines have been issued. “What the Ministry can say is that we will issue advisories and we will also take into account any complaint that comes,” he said.

He also said that a Task Force had earlier been set up to work on a regulatory body but the channels had opposed this and wanted self-regulation.

Answering the main question, I&B Minister Arun Jaitley said no fact had been brought to the notice of the government alleging shows playing with sentiments of the people. However, the content carried on private satellite TV channels is regulated according to the provisions of the Programme and Advertising Codes contained in the Cable Television Network Rules 1994 and the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act 1995. The rules provide for a whole range of parameters to regulate programme and advertisements on TV channels including the reality shows.

The programme code says that no programme should be carried which (a) offends good taste or decency (b) contains anything obscene, defamatory, deliberate, false and suggestive innuendos and half truths (c) criticizes, maligns or slanders any individual in person or certain groups, segments of social, public and moral life of the country (d) denigrates women through the depiction in any manner of the figure of a woman, her form or body or any part thereof in such a way as to have the effect of being indecent or derogatory to women, or is likely to deprave, corrupt or injure the public morality or morals (e) denigrates children (f) is not suitable for unrestricted public exhibition (g) is unsuitable for children.

Action is taken against defaulting channels whenever any violation of the said codes is noticed or brought to the notice of the Ministry.

The Ministry also has an Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) to look into the violations of the Programme and Advertisement Codes. IMC has representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Defence, External Affairs, Law, Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare, Consumer Affairs and a representative from the industry in Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). IMC meets periodically and recommends action against violations.

Besides, as part of self-regulation by industry, Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), which is a representative body of non-news and current affairs TV channels, has set up Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) to examine the complaints about television programmes.
