Bhaskar Da, a month on: Ashit Kukian remembers an unforgettable professional

MUMBAI: A heartfelt tribute to someone who was not just a boss, but a true mentor, guru, and friend.

Under his guidance, I learned the intricacies of the media world, sharpening my skills and understanding through his profound knowledge and insight. His humility, paired with one-liners full of humor and wisdom, made him a beloved figure to all who had the privilege of working with him.

To say I will miss him feels like an understatement—his impact on me was immense.

The pride he took in our successes, as though we were his own, felt much like the pride a father has for his children.

He often said  “if the student doesn’t learn, I will blame the teacher.”

Such was his conviction that the success of juniors was the responsibility of senior leaders.

And he truly walked the talk—investing in us, shaping us, and ensuring that we had everything we needed to thrive.

The void he leaves behind can never be filled. I will have to learn to navigate an altered world without his steady presence.

I can only hope that he finds the joy and peace he so richly deserves in heaven. People like him are rare, and it’s a loss that words cannot fully capture.

Thank you, Boss, for everything you taught me, for the lessons you shared, and for being more than just a leader—you were a guiding light in my journey.

  • Industry gathers to remember their Bhaskar Da

Industry gathers to remember their Bhaskar Da

MUMBAI:  Friends, colleagues, and admirers gathered on the evening of 24 January  to celebrate the life of Dr Bhaskar Das, fondly known as BD or Bhaskar Da, at a packed remembrance ceremony at the Nehru Centre in Mumbai. The atmosphere resembled a rock concert, as people stood shoulder to shoulder to honour the “rock star” of the media industry, in the words of media veteran Meenakshi Menon.

A striking photograph of BD captured his essence—an effortlessly stylish presence, his T-shirt radiating understated luxury, hair tousled as if by a breeze from a southern French beach, and his insouciance evident in every detail.

The evening highlighted BD’s extraordinary ability to forge deep connections. As his brother Sanjay Das shared, “Bhaskar had an incredible gift for bringing people together.”

    Dr Bhaskar Das

Despite being a deeply private individual, BD had an innate knack for shining a spotlight on others, learning about their lives, families, and struggles, all while keeping his own life in the shadows, highlighted Meenakshi.

The venue was emotionally charged – some shared their loss, some shared how Bhaskar Da had helped them unexpectedly and expecting nothing in return. Many attendees shared stories of his thoughtfulness and the genuine care he extended to everyone, regardless of their stature. Bhaskar Da was a people’s person in the truest sense—interested not in what he could gain but in what he could learn from others.

“BD’s ability to make friends and influence people was unmatched,” noted one attendee. “He was a friend to all and an inspiration to many.”

The remembrance ceremony was as vibrant and heartfelt as the life BD lived—an event he would have undoubtedly approved of. As those closest to him bid farewell, they reflected on his enduring wisdom and generosity.

“Farewell, my friend,” wrote Meenakshi. “You will live on in our hearts and through the advice you shared. You will be remembered always.”

Bhaskar Da would have liked it if people celebrated his life, rather than mourn his loss or his passing. He lived a full life, like he used to say: “I’d rather have life in my years, than years in my life.”

While, we would have liked him  to have both, he  chose the first. We appreciate and respect his choice Bhaskar Da.  Thank you for the wonderful  legacy of relationships, warmth, and a life well-lived that you have left behind. Cheers!.

In Loving Memory of Bhaskar Das

MUMBAI: The media world mourns the loss of Bhaskar Das,  or BD as he was known,  a beloved and influential media professional, who passed away this morning at Breach Candy Hospital after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was gracefully advancing through his 72nd year. Despite the doctors’ grim prognosis and the family’s emotional struggle over the past weeks, Bhaskar’s indomitable spirit remained a source of inspiration for many until his final moments.

BD’s impressive career spanned over four decades, beginning as a management trainee in 1980 and culminating in senior leadership roles in some of the industry’s most prestigious organizations. His journey included transformative years at Bennett Coleman and Company Ltd  (BCCL), where he played a pivotal role in propelling the company into a powerhouse, alongside his esteemed boss, mentor, and friend, Pradeep Guha, who predeceased him in 2021.

BD’s  professional accolades are a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication. His leadership as group CEO at Zee Media and later as group president & chief strategy officer at Republic TV left an indelible mark on the media landscape. He was known for spearheading dramatic revenue growth and transforming legacy companies into modern success stories. During his tenure at BCCL, he was responsible for an astounding escalation in advertising revenue from Rs 1,560 crore to Rs 4,200 crore, underscoring his unwavering commitment to excellence in media management.

    Bhaskar Das

Beyond his impressive resume, Bhaskar was a passionate mentor and educator, dedicating considerable time to the development of future leaders in marketing and media. He served as a professor at various esteemed institutions, including Mica  and SPJIMR, imparting knowledge and inspiring students to think critically about the evolving landscape of media and marketing. His profound insight and ability to provoke thought earned him recognition as a sought-after speaker at industry forums and prestigious business schools worldwide.

Bhaskar’s warmth, charm, and infectious smile endeared him to everyone who had the privilege to know him. His profound wisdom and unique perspective on leadership—believing firmly in delivering outcomes rather than mere outputs—left a lasting influence on his teams and associates. Colleagues have described him as an “insight provocateur” and a loyal friend, someone who nurtured the potential in others while remaining a lifelong learner himself.

In the weeks leading to his passing, Bhaskar’s independent film maker wife Shomshuklla  Das kept close friends informed of his health struggles, and his resilience during this difficult time highlighted the strength of his character. While his battle with cancer was immense, his hope and confidence in finding a way through remained a guiding light for family and friends.

Bhaskarda – as those who were close to him called him –  had one thing to say among friends: “I still feel like the petrol of my life is not yet over. My mind does not know my age. Should I add years to my life or life to my years? I  am very clear: I’d rather add life to my years.”

Bhaskarda, you lived your life well in a wholesome manner. Many would love to leave behind a legacy of innovation, mentorship, and an unwavering zest for life like you did.  Your  contributions to the media industry will be remembered, as will your  remarkable ability to connect with those around you.

  • Ground-breaking tech-powered platform GenS aims to challenge ‘age-old’ societal norms

Ground-breaking tech-powered platform GenS aims to challenge ‘age-old’ societal norms

Mumbai: GenSxty Tribe is set to transform the conventional narrative around ageing with a bespoke tech-enabled platform curated for the 60+ – GenS. 60+ is a time of newfound freedom that’s unburdened by social expectations and stereotypes. GenS encourages the 60+ audience to live and explore life on their own terms, armed with the financial means and opportunities to pursue passions and explore new relationships and dimensions of personal growth. GenS is set to redefine the golden years, offering a vibrant, safe and engaging space where 60+ individuals can thrive, connect, and celebrate life.

As healthcare advances and life expectancy rises, the world’s senior population is reaching unprecedented levels.

. By 2050, for the first time in history, there will be more people over 60 than children under 15

. In India, seniors aged 60 and above currently make up over 10% of the population, numbering 149 million

. This figure is projected to rise to 340 million by 2050, accounting for 21% of the total population, according to the India Ageing Report [UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) India, in collaboration with the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS)]

Despite this, brands and advertisers still predominantly target the younger demographic, neglecting the substantial spending power and influence of the 60+ audience.

GenS founder Meenakshi Menon (65) said, “The GenS app is being built using both a deep understanding of the consumer in terms of their need state and the technology that is keeping in mind their ease of use. With the launch of GenS, we empower individuals to embrace the abundance of life after 60 with confidence and enthusiasm. I firmly believe that the 60+ have reached a stage in their lives where they can become a vehicle of social change while enjoying each day of their lives to the fullest. Adding life to their years is more critical than adding years to their life.”

She further adds, “As a member of this cohort, it was important to get an independent perspective of this segment and understand what made them tick. Very often Founders make the mistake of creating a product that they believe in and disregard what the market says. It was critical that we spent time understanding the contours of this consumer. We had to dig deep beneath the surface to get at their feelings, their hidden concerns and motives. It was a journey of discovery for all of us. Each one was invested in the outcome, either as members of the cohort or Children who cared deeply for their parents’ well-being. That is why we commissioned research with Ormax Compass to discover the various predispositions and emotions felt by this group. The findings gave us both insight and intent and contributed massively to the development of our soon-to-be-launched GenS app.”

GenS recognises that turning 60 is a milestone that marks the beginning of life’s greatest adventure. Menon, a renowned figure in the marketing industry, brings her expertise and passion to create a platform that celebrates freedom, passion, and new opportunities for the 60+ community. The platform is further powered by senior industry stalwarts – Bhaskar Das, Dilip Cherian, Amit Bose, Namita Roy Ghose and supported by Indu Kak, Ramesh Menon and Jignesh Barasara, amongst others who have been instrumental in the inception of GenS, contributing their diverse insights and support to bring this innovative vision to life.

By recognizing that 60+ is a time of newfound freedom and opportunity, GenS aims to celebrate their potential to live life on their own terms, pursue passions, and explore new relationships. The platform is designed to help the active agers combat loneliness, break stereotypes, and rediscover joy and laughter. By leveraging the power of community and technology, GenS will offer a holistic range of services that cater to the physical, mental, emotional, financial, and social well-being of its members.

As GenS prepares for its launch, it invites 60+ individuals to embark on this new chapter with them! With a mission to revolutionize life after 60, GenS is more than just a platform—it’s a movement dedicated to empowering, celebrating, and supporting its members every step of the way.
