The 2022 Grammy Awards postponed amid Omicron surge

Mumbai: The 2022 Grammy Awards have been postponed indefinitely, weeks before the planned Los Angeles ceremony over what organisers called “too many risks” from the Omicron variant.

The Recording Academy on Wednesday said it made the decision to postpone the ceremony “after careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners. Given the uncertainty surrounding the omicron variant, holding the show on January 31 simply contains too many risks.”

The attempt at a back-to-normal show had been scheduled for 31 January at the newly renamed Crypto.com Arena with a live audience and performances, but no new date is on the books.

Jon Batiste is the leading nominee for this year’s honours, grabbing 11 nods in a variety of genres including R&B, jazz, American roots music, classical and music video. Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. are tied for the second-most nominations with eight apiece.

The Grammys move could be the beginning of another round of award-show rescheduling after another winter coronavirus surge, with the Screen Actors Guild Awards planned for February and the Academy Awards for March. The announcement was made around the same time the Sundance Film Festival cancelled its in-person programming set to begin on 20 January and shifted to an online format.

Last year, like most major awards shows in early 2021, the Grammys were postponed due to coronavirus concerns. The show was moved from late January to mid-March and held with a spare audience made up of mostly nominees and their guests in and around the Los Angeles Convention Center, next door to its usual home, the arena then known as Staples Center.

It was a big night for Beyonce and Taylor Swift, but the live performances that set the Grammys apart from other awards shows were set separately with no significant crowds, many of them pre-taped.

“We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon,” the academy statement said.

With two professional basketball teams and a hockey team occupying the arena, finding that date could be complicated. The Recording Academy made no mention of a possible venue change in its statement.

  • America’s Gen Z represents $44+ bn in annual purchasing power: JWT

America’s Gen Z represents $44+ bn in annual purchasing power: JWT

MUMBAI: J. Walter Thompson Intelligence’s newly launched innovation and futurism unit The Innovation Group has unveiled a new report on Generation Z (those born in the mid-1990s and early 2000s). The report, which features original quantitative studies and consumer data, examines this emerging generation’s key behaviors and attitudes, as well as the brands and influencers engaging them.

Eclipsing the Millennials, who have dominated the news and pop culture agenda in recent years, this new, younger generation identifies as a distinctly different group in both behavior and mindset. In the UK and US, Gen Z comprises a quarter of the population, and in the US alone the group represents over $44 billion in annual purchasing power.

More inspired by Malala than Beyoncé, Gen Zers are characterized by ethical consumption habits, native digital technology use, entrepreneurial ambition and progressive views on topics ranging from education to gender, according to the report.

“We’re excited to showcase this rich study of a dynamic new generation. Generation Zers are a complex mixture of sophistication and wide-eyed optimism. They are intelligent, confident and — importantly for brands — they question the prescribed norms of everything from formal education to gender politics. For brands to reach this group, they will need to understand what makes them tick and come to grips with these nuances,” said Innovation Group worldwide director Lucie Greene.

The report features analysis and brand examples across sectors including beauty, retail, media, technology, education and more.

    Generation Z by the numbers:

    • 82 per cent of Gen Zers say they don’t care about sexual orientation

    • 86 per cent use the their smartphones multiple times a day

    • 70 per cent watch more than two hours of YouTube content each day

    • 88 per cent say people are exploring their sexuality more than in the past

    • 67 per cent would rather shop in stores than online

    • 83 per cent say saving for the future is important

For this report, the Innovation Group conducted quantitative studies using SONAR, J. Walter Thompson’s proprietary research unit that develops and exploits new research techniques to understand cultures, brands and consumer motivation.

A total of 1,000 individuals aged 12-19 were surveyed in the US and the UK in February 2015. Insights are also underpinned by original interviews and photography documenting the lives and preferences of Gen Z case studies in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

9XO turns three; launches Awesome Threesome music block

MUMBAI: 9X Media’s international English music channel 9XO has lined up some new music and initiatives as it turns three on 24 April, 2015.

Speaking on the same, 9XO programming head Clyde D’Souza said, “As part of our three year celebrations we want to give our viewers an overdose of what we do best. While viewers continue to experience great music, we’ve created a block called 9XO Awesome Threesome. Over the next couple of weeks you can enjoy three hits from over 15 awesome artists.”

9XO channel head Luke Kenny added, “There is a lot of music available on digital platforms, but due to the clutter sometimes good music is lost. We analysed this trend and launched 9XO. The idea is to provide viewers with the best English music in a clutter free environment and we have succeeded at that. Our viewers have appreciated our music innovations and efforts and that is reflected in their feedback across our digital platforms. We also encourage new talent by providing them our platform OmeGrown, which gives them their break in the music space. Our journey did have few obstacles but with the constant support and feedback from our viewers, the journey has been a pleasant one all throughout.”

Speaking about the promotional activity and advertisers reaction, Kenny said, “The advertisers reaction so far has been really encouraging and fortunately everyone likes what we provide. Our audience is the target audience of many brands and hence through us, a huge segment of 18 – 24 aged population can be reached. Quality music has the potential to breakthrough any blockage and us completing three years is its proof. Our promotional activity reverberates around the social media platform; we run contests throughout the year, which engages the youth. Live events and college fests are the facets that we interactively use for promotions.”

9XO will celebrate its success till 5 May, 2015 with artists such as Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Sia, 1D and Beyonce amongst others.

Some of the channel’s innovative programming include 9XO Tweetdown, the first ever Twitter based music countdown show and the artists Social Feed (Twitter and Instagram feeds) on the TV screens during the videos on air.  The channel also brought English music fans the most loved moments and events/original and recorded which landmarks in the journey of the channel became.

“We are looking to involve independent artists more and more, they are yet to be engaged in an optimum way. We want to be the leader when it comes to international interaction, we want to bridge the gap between music lovers and quality performers,” Kenny concludes.
