    Netflix boasts eye-watering viewing figures

MUMBAI:  Netflix, the streaming behemoth that enjoys reminding us all that it was first to the party, has revealed its subscribers collectively frittered away a staggering 94 billion hours watching content between July and December 2024. One can only imagine how many unwritten novels, unlearned languages, and unvisited gymnasiums those hours represent.most watched films

The company, displaying its customary selective transparency, proudly announced that the comedy caper Carry On topped its film charts with 137 million views. Curiously, Netflix neglected to convert this figure into actual viewing hours—perhaps calculating the true extent of global procrastination proved too depressing even for its data analysts.

Union (131 million views) and Rebel Ridge (129 million) followed closely behind, with Beverly Hills Cop (97 million) and Our Little Secret (81 million) rounding out the top five films that kept humanity from more productive pursuits.

On the series front, to absolutely nobody’s surprise, Squid Game continued its cultural stranglehold with its second season amassing 87 million views. The Perfect Couple (which, ironically, describes Netflix’s relationship with its audience’s leisure time) secured 75 million views, while Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story drew in 70 million viewers with its cheery subject matter.

Meanwhile, Emily in Paris continues to defy both critics and cultural cringe in its fourth season, with 58 million views suggesting that viewers simply cannot get enough of watching an implausibly employed American navigate the treacherous waters of croissants and couture. Nobody Wants This completed the top five with 57 million views—a title that clearly doesn’t apply to the show itself.

The streaming giant’s announcement serves as both a flex of its market dominance and a gentle reminder that we’re all spending far too much time staring at screens. Nonetheless, with numbers like these, Netflix executives are likely too busy counting their subscribers to worry about counting sheep at night.

(While like millions of others globally, we too are fans of Netflix and probably contributed a few thousand hours to Netflix’s 94 billion hours, we decided to write this piece in a fun,  almost irreverent manner, just like the content Netflix offers. Cheers!)

  • Shawn Ryan’s Beverly Hills Cop is officially dead

Shawn Ryan’s Beverly Hills Cop is officially dead

MUMBAI: Shawn Ryan took to his Twitter page on Friday to announce that efforts to shop the pilot, which CBS passed on in May, have not been successful.

“Sad to report that efforts to land Beverly Hills Cop pilot at another network have failed. This iteration is dead for now,” he wrote. “Good news for fans of franchise is that the pilot tested so well, it has caused Paramount to put another #BHC movie into development.”

Additional details were not yet available about a potential Paramount movie.

He added that he “loved” working with stars Brandon T. Jackson, who played Axel Foley‘s (Eddie Murphy) son, and the rest of the cast, including Kevin Pollak, David Denman and Christine Lahti, among others.

CBS passed on the update, which would have followed Jackson‘s cop as he made a name for himself with the Beverly Hills Police Department.

The drama was considered a sure thing to land on CBS‘ schedule as the Sony Pictures Television entry came with built-in brand recognition and a top producer attached in The Shield‘s Ryan. Despite the wattage of the talent involved, CBS passed. Sony and Paramount then shopped the project to other networks.

CBS‘ decision is a blow to Paramount‘s effort to get back into television production. The studio has been out of that business since Paramount was split from CBS in 2005. Beverly Hills Cop was a logical starting point since it has been a successful movie franchise for Paramount for a decade starting in 1984. Paramount CEO Brad Grey announced in March that Paramount would partner with Sony Pictures Television to produce an existing pilot and potential series. The same day, Philippe Dauman, CEO of parent company Viacom, noted he would “get back, with very little investment, into the television production business.”

MUMBAI: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) announced the revitalisation of MGM’s domestic theatrical distribution business with a new strategy that calls for the release of several high profile films this year. The company named a new senior management team that will drive the growth of the distribution business and announced its 2006-2007 slate of theatrical releases.

MGM’s theatrical distribution unit will now be overseen by MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands. He most recently served as the president and COO of DreamWorks SKG and is the former COO of Miramax Films and has built an experienced team of executives to manage MGM’s domestic distribution.

Paramount Pictures veteran Clark Woods will serve as president, domestic theatrical distribution of MGM. In his new role, Woods, a 25-year veteran of Paramount Pictures, will supervise all aspects of theatrical distribution.

During his tenure with Paramount Pictures, Woods was involved with and spearheaded the distribution of films such as Titanic, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Ordinary People, Raider’s of the Lost Ark, Terms of Endearment, Beverly Hills Cop, Mission: Impossible and War of the Worlds.

“We have an exceptional team in place to drive the growth of MGM’s domestic theatrical distribution. We expect that re-invigorating our distribution business in North America will pave the way for MGM to regain its prominence as a major force in providing new quality filmed entertainment on a global basis. As part of this strategy, we are pleased to announce an exciting slate of theatrical releases in 2006 and in the first quarter of 2007, involving many of the best actors, producers and directors in the business,” said MGM chairman and CEO Harry E Sloan.

MGM’s next release will be Lucky Number Slevin, which is scheduled to be released on 7 April in association with The Weinstein Company..

“We are rapidly expanding MGM’s distribution business. Going forward, through partnerships with independent production companies and studios, we plan to continually build an outstanding slate of releases. Working with these independent production companies, will enable us to focus on North American distribution as well as rights management worldwide. The future is about content and we are working to freshen and bulk up our world-class library, which will further enhance the value of the company,” said Sands.

MGM’s films (with video rights) will be distributed in the home video marketplace by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and also be made available on the Blu-Ray format.
