  • Narsingha Broadcasting to launch Bengali News channel

Narsingha Broadcasting to launch Bengali News channel

KOLKATA: Kolkata-based Narsingha Broadcasting, which has re-started publishing of Bengali daily ‘Ekdin’ from 29 June after acquiring the publishing rights from old owners, now aims to foray into the television media business. The company plans to launch a Bengali satellite News channel soon. While the name of the News channel hasn’t yet been revealed, it is likely to include the word ‘Ekdin’.

“We have applied for the uplinking and downlinking licence already. Though it would be a Bengali channel, we have set aside 10 minute slots each for Hindi and English news bulletins, keeping in mind the non-Bengali TV viewers settled in Kolkata and other states,” said Ekdin editor in chief Rhitobrata Bhattacharya to indiantelevision.com.

According to industry sources, the company may take equipments and teleports on lease, at least initially. Narsingha Broadcasting had recently acquired the rights from Siliguri-based Darpan Press to re-start the Bengali daily, which had wound up the broadsheet, leaving close to 120 employees including journalists and technical staff jobless on 15 January, this year.

Founded by veteran journalist Suman Chattopadhyay, who was also the first editor of ‘Ekdin’, the newspaper was sold off to the Chakra Group after Chattopadhyay joined Eyi Shomoy, The Times Group’s Bengali daily. The Chakra Group later sold ‘Ekdin’ to Darpan, which has owned the daily since 1 October, 2013. Without citing any valid reasons to employees, Darpan shut down the publication.

When Darpan Press chief executive officer and director Sandip Choudhary was contacted he confirmed that the rights had been sold to Narsingha Broadcasting which had re-launched the newspaper.

Bhattacharya informed that ‘Ekdin’ would have Kolkata and Durgapur editions and the new management would try to attain a circulation of around one lakh, if not more in the initial months. “We are working to bring out a special supplement on cinema, literary and historical aspects to give something extra to readers apart from hard news,” he revealed.

  • Channel 10’s survival strategy

    Channel 10’s survival strategy

KOLKATA: Channel 10, a 24 hours Bengali News channel and also one of the surviving TV channels from the otherwise redundant Saradha Group stable, plans to introduce a sponsored slot for soft programmes soon. This is to keep the show running for the channel. The move comes after the Non Resident Indian (NRI) businessman and sole financier Samir Chakraborty decided to discontinue with his investment plans to run the channel.

The other channels under Saradha Group are Tara Newz and Tara Muzik. According to sources within the channel, Channel 10 is also looking for new financiers.

“While we have always focused on hard news, we are eventually moving towards soft features, the promotions for which are on. We had to do this to run the channel. We will try to walk alone until we find a financier,” said a senior from the channel on condition of anonymity.

It can be recalled that the Saradha-owned Channel 10 had closed down like the other media ventures including Sakalbela, The Bengal Post, Azad Hind, Prabhat Varta, Seven Sisters Post, Tara Newz and Tara Muzik among others after the Group’s chit fund business went bust in April last year.

It was after this that the Channel 10 employees formed an Employees’ Welfare Association to resolve payment issues. “But this did not help much, since employees were still not paid regularly,” added the source.

The News channel again saw the light of day after the Calcutta High Court permitted Chakraborty to run it. While this came as a huge relief to more than the 268 employees working there, the channel is in turmoil yet again due to shortage of investment.

When asked why the earlier financier washed his hand from the channel, the source said, “Since both the ED (Enforcement Directorate) and CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) are scrutinising the Saradha scam closely, Chakraborty has decided to discontinue with this venture.”

Sources also hint that Chakraborty had applied for satellite license, before deciding to part ways with the channel.

That apart, Chakraborty was also looking at producing sports and entertainment content related news which could be engaging for the viewers. “But nothing materialised,” recalls an employee.

Last year Tara (Television Aimed at Regional Audiences) Newz also introduced sponsored slot for sports news as a survival strategy.

  • ETV Bangla earmarks Rs 150 mn capital expenditure for its Bengali news channel

ETV Bangla earmarks Rs 150 mn capital expenditure for its Bengali news channel

KOLKATA: Earlier in January, Indiantelevision.com reported how the Bengali general entertainment channel ETV Bangla of the Network 18 group is looking at a news foray. The latest word is the Network has earmarked a capital expenditure of Rs 150 mln for launching a 24-hour Bengali news and current affairs channel.

The channel would be launched by March 15 and will have a team of 200 professionals, including journalists and technical staffs, said one of the editors of ETV.

The programming for the news channel will be uplinked from Hyderabad for the time being. By the end of the year, the company plans to set up a transmission system in Kolkata to be able to uplink directly. The company has already received a license from government authorities.

Dhrubajyoti Pramanik, formerly with ABP Ananda – a 24-hour news channel from the house of Kolkata headquartered ABP Group, will is joining as the Editor of ET’s Bengali news channel. “He is likely to join the organisation from 1 March,” said a reliable source from ETV.

An official from ETV Bangla said, “We had the set up and infrastructure for running a 24-hour news channel and now we will be using it. To run the news channel, around 200 people would be required.”

ETV Bangla, which airs three news bulletins at present, will no longer telecast news once the news channel is launched. ETV Bangla will strictly become a general entertainment channel (GEC) going forward, the official said.

Recently Viacom18, the 50:50 joint venture between US-based Viacom and India’s Network 18 Group, completed its acquisition in ETV Bangla. It should be noted that ETV Bangla, a part of the ETV Network  group of channels, was launched in 1999.
