    FremantleMedia acquires distribution rights to BBC Two’s ‘Simply Nigella’

    MUMBAI: FremantleMedia International (FMI) is set to satisfy the appetites of international audiences with its latest deal with BBC Productions for the global distribution rights (excluding the UK and EIRE) of Simply Nigella (6×30).

     

    Starring the internationally renowned food writer and TV cook Nigella Lawson, Simply Nigella will make its debut to TV buyers at the upcoming MIPCOM and air on the UK’s BBC 2 later this year.

     

    Inspiring and uplifting, Simply Nigella introduces viewers to a new-pared down approach to cooking and eating by demonstrating easy to prepare recipes that are designed to nourish the soul. The series delivers a true sense of balance between lightness and lushness with a mix of tasty everyday meals, crowd pleasing feasts and indulgent sweet treats.

     

    Creating a handful of dishes per episode, Lawson showcases her talents in the kitchen, using each recipe to connect with the audience like never before. She shares the story behind each meal and focuses on specific ingredients revealing what makes them her favourites as well as divulging her culinary tips to ensure cooking is as stress free as possible. Lawson also ventures beyond the kitchen visiting local suppliers and independent food stores to source fresh quality produce to include within her recipes. From healthy breakfasts and gluten free goodies, to decadent desserts; Simply Nigella promises food that’s not only reassuringly simple but will appeal to every palette and make us feel more alive.

    Directed by Dominic Cyriax and executively produced by Jennifer Fazey, Simply Nigella will feature six episodes plus a one-hour Christmas special filmed in Kansas. The episode will see Lawson create a broad range of festive dishes and features her guide to stress-free cooking and entertaining over the holidays.

     

    This global distribution deal sees Lawson join FMI’s ever expanding catalogue of culinary stars, which includes Jamie Oliver, Jimmy Doherty, The Hairy Bikers, Lorraine Pascal, Martha Stewart, Anthony Bourdain, Silvia Colloca, Anabel Langbein and Haylie Duff.

  • BBC to launch second series of ‘The Tudors’

    MUMBAI: BBC has acquired the rights of the second series of The Tudors. The second series will air on BBC2 next year.

    Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a young Henry VIII, the series chronicles his life and that of his close coterie of advisors, minions and lovers.

    Shot in Ireland, the series will take in the English Reformation and the destruction of the Catholic Church in England. It will also feature Henry VIII’s marriage to Anne Boleyn, who delivers him a child and also the arrival of Jane Seymour in the Queen’s chamber.

    Creator Michael Hirst said,”At the end of the first series of The Tudors, we stood at the edge of the precipice; in the second series we jump right off it.There are old and new conflicts, both at court and outside it, where the rapid changes to social life bring turmoil and sometimes tragedy.”

    BBC controller of programme acquisitions George McGhee added,”We are extremely pleased with our viewers’ positive reactions to The Tudors and have subsequently acquired series two for transmission in 2008.”

  • BBC Worldwide appoints Global Licensing as agent for key brands

    MUMBAI: The British pubic broadcaster BBC’s commercial arm BBC Worldwide Australasia has appointed Global Licensing NZ as its merchandise representative for its hit properties Doctor Who, Top Gear and In the Night Garden.

    Global Licensing will hold exclusive merchandise rights, including rights for both the classic and new series of Doctor Who. Toys of Doctor Who will be launched this month at The Warehouse, Kmart, Farmers and Toy World, including the famous Cyberman Voice Changer Helmet, the UK’s Toy of the Year, 2006.

    Global Licensing is expected to appoint local partners for all properties across a broad range of categories including apparel, accessories and games ranges.

    Doctor Who first aired in 1963, and was re-launched in 2005. A co-production between BBC Wales and CBC in Canada, the fourth series is about to go into production in Cardiff. Series 3 will air on Prime, New Zealand’s third free-to-air network, from August.

    Top Gear has consistently been the most watched programme on BBC2 in the UK. Now seen in more than 120 countries around the world, it has become famous for its combination of wit, irreverence and unbiased honesty.

    In the Night Garden is currently airing on TV2 in New Zealand. Filmed in real woodland, the programme weaves together the very latest technical innovations in live-character costume technology and computer animation to create a compelling experience for young viewers. 17 licensees are already in place in the UK.

    A full merchandise programme is planned in New Zealand to complement the launch and other existing platforms. Hasbro, the master toy licensee, has announced an October toy launch, apart from books from Penguin and DVDs from Roadshow.

    Global Licensing NZ is planning an early 2008 launch for an extensive apparel range, and will roll out home wares, apparel accessories, stationery, footwear, bags, games and puzzles.

    Global Licensing NZ head Mark Paul says, “Doctor Who has a long history in New Zealand and the success of the new TV series and UK merchandising programme will provide some great opportunities for NZ retailers and licensees. For Top Gear we intend to create a comprehensive lifestyle programme with products and promotions appealing to the whole family. In The Night Garden is a fantastic production and we anticipate great demand for infant/preschool products beginning with the new toy line from Hasbro”.
