  • BBC World’s ‘The World Challenge’ shortlists India’s Irula Venom Centre as a finalist

MUMBAI: The World Challenge – a global competition in partnership with BBC World, Shell and Newsweek which seeks to highlight and reward outstanding examples of community enterprise and innovation – has announced that the Irula Venom Centre has been shortlisted as one of 12 finalists.

Earlier this year, BBC World received a total of 457 entries with the highest numbers coming from India with a total of 71 nominations. Forty five entries came from the United States, 30 from Nigeria , 18 from South Africa and 17 from Pakistan.

A panel of judges, including representatives from the World Bank, TVE and Triodos Bank, chose 12 unique and interesting entries to progress to the final stage. The panel recognised the innovative way in which the Irula Venom Centre (India) has been able to create employment for local tribal people, while protecting the local community from the dangers of venomous snakes.

The Irula community, not long ago impoverished, is now being employed to catch snakes and carefully extract their venom, before releasing them back into the wild. This venom is used to create anti-venom serum for the treatment of snakebites, which, in turn, protects the local community from harm. The project has been so successful that the Irula Venom Centre now supplies up to 80 per cent of the venom for India’s medical needs.

A 15-minute film is being produced on each of the finalists, and these will be aired as six special programmes about The World Challenge to be broadcast globally on BBC World for six weeks from Saturday 20 August (every Saturday at 2 pm and 7 pm). Each project will also be featured extensively in Newsweek.

Viewers can vote for their favourite project through the website of The World Challenge, at www.theworldchallenge.co.uk. The winning project will be announced in November, and will receive from Shell a grant of US$20,000.

The other shortlisted projects are: Basket Weaving (Kenya), Bio Power (Malta), Coconuts For Erosion Control (Philippines), Elephant Pepper (Zambia), Men On The Side Of The Road (South Africa), Nguna-Pele Rechargeable Battery (Vanuatu), Real Vision, Real IPM (Kenya), Resin Roof Tiles (Ukraine), Riet Vell Organic Farming (Spain), ROMP (United Kingdom), Weddings That Give Back (United States).

  • BBC World’s deal with Emirates for live in-flight news

NEW DELHI: Emirates has signed an agreement with BBC World, making the Dubai-based airline the first to offer live BBC news headlines on its aircraft.
The new service, effective immediately, means that passengers can stay in touch with the latest news, business and sport stories from the www.bbcnews.com website. Information is updated regularly throughout each flight and displayed on overhead monitors or personal video screens, an official statement from the BBC states.
Headlines are sent constantly from the BBC website and retransmitted to the aircraft through Inmarsat geostationary satellites, positioned 35,600km above earth. The software and communications infrastructure for the service was developed in-house by Emirates.
BBC World travel distribution head Bill Mould added, “The BBC is renowned for its authoritative, accurate, balanced presentation of the news. This agreement with Emirates means the airline’s passengers can be the best informed, most up-to-date travellers in the skies.”
Emirates had been presenting a selection of headlines on its brand new Airbus A340-500 aircraft, including the top six news stories and the top four business and sport developments. The new service now becomes available on all A330s and Boeing B777-300s, as well as some B777-200s.

  • BBC World’s Asian viewership up by 15 per cent, channel quotes Pax

NEW DELHI: The seventh Pan Asia Cross Media Survey (PAX) has found that BBC World has sustained the audience it gained in 2002. It has also shown an annual growth in some of Asia’s biggest urban centres.
A company release states that BBC World has experienced an increase of 15 per cent in its viewership within Asia – the fastest growth for any international news or business channel.
Across the original seven PAX markets, BBC World claims to be nearly 60 per cent ahead of CNBC in terms of reach among business decision-makers. The channel has enjoyed particularly large growth in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Hong Kong and Taipei.
In particular, BBC World’s investment in regional programming is said to have attracted a loyal audience of senior business people. Findings show that more than 24,000 ‘top management’ in Asia tune in to BBC World either every day or almost every day, according to an official statement from the BBC.
BBC World’s overall audience profile also remains enviably upscale. Among the ten largest international channels in Asia-Pacific, BBC World’s audience includes the highest proportion of frequent business travellers (34 per cent), business decision-makers (27 per cent) and business opinion formers (35 per cent).
The release quotes BBC World’s head of research and planning Jeremy Nye, as saying, “BBC World continues to maintain its position in Asia-Pacific, attracting upmarket audiences, and cost-effective delivery to advertisers. Across the main nine PAX markets, we are pulling further away from its main competitors, and now reaching more business decision-makers in certain day parts than CNN.”
The PAX 2003 survey was conducted during the 12-month period from July 2002 to June 2003 among 19,222 respondents in markets in Asia-Pacific. The survey was based on nine markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul and India. In India, it covered Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
