BBC World News appoints Jonah Fisher as first ever Myanmar correspondent

MUMBAI: It was in December 2013 that BBC News had got permission from the Ministry of Information of Myanmar (Burma) to open up a bureau in the country. Now, as the new year has arrived, the channel has appointed its first ever correspondent in the country – Jonah Fisher.

Fisher has been with BBC News for the last 10 years and has covered events for the channel in places like Eritrea, Sudan, London, South Africa, Nigeria and most recently Thailand. He will be reporting for television, radio as well as the network’s online platforms.

Speaking on his appointment BBC Global News director Peter Horrocks said: “The appointment of Jonah Fisher marks another important milestone in the rapid welcome changes taking place in Burma/Myanmar. Censorship and repression are being replaced with a new media environment where the BBC can freely broadcast trusted and impartial news. The BBC’s charity BBC Media Action will continue its work to help train the next generation of Burma/Myanmar journalists which will further contribute to the country’s transition towards media freedom. These investments are part of our commitment to our audiences in Burma/Myanmar and we look forward to covering the historic elections in 2015. ” BBC Media Action and the BBC Burmese Service already have a presence in Myanmar.

Fisher has reported on issues involving Burma’s Rohingya Muslim community’s fights with the Buddhist monks amongst several other ones.

Burma has always been a highly censored country and it was only in 2012 that the country announced its decision to stop censoring content before publication leading to several private publications commencing operations.

MUMBAI: After successfully discovering water molecules on the moon in the mission he led back in 2008, Jitendra Goswami has set his sights on Mars. Professor Goswami, director of national space research institute the Physical Research Laboratory, is the planetary scientist supervising India’s first mission to the Red Planet. The Mars Orbiter Mission probe will hunt for telltale signs of methane in the Martian atmosphere, possible evidence for microbial life. If all goes well and the mission succeeds in reaching Mars, India will be entering a very select club that includes the former Soviet Union, the United States and Europe.

On the eve of the expected launch, Justin Rowlatt talks to Professor Goswami to find out why India wants to send a mission to Mars when other space programmes have scaled back their spending and ambitions. In front of a live audience made up of space scientists and the general public, they discuss the motivation behind this 300 million kilometre interplanetary trip, its chances of success, and what new insights into Mars might be revealed.

Justin Rowlatt, Presenter of Exchanges at the Frontier says “It is extraordinarily exciting to be in India at a time when the country is making history in space exploration. We will be at the epicentre of space research at the Physical Research laboratory in Ahmedabad with the team who hope soon to be analysing data from Mars. This Exchanges at the Frontier special will explore the implications of the mission for India on the world stage with the unique global perspective of the BBC World Service. “

BBC world news continues to lead as Indias top international news channel

MUMBAI : BBC World News has maintained its status as the leading international English news channel in India among the country’s affluent, influential opinion leaders, business decision makers (BDMs) and frequent international travellers, according to the latest Ipsos PAX survey.

BBC World News also beats India’s domestic news channels to take the number one spot for all news channels amongst influential opinion leaders, BDMs, and frequent international travellers.
The channel reached these positions by beating competitors including CNN, CNBC TV18, NDTV 24×7, Times Now, CNN-IBN and Bloomberg TV India.

The BBC – including BBC World News and BBC.com – is the only news brand across TV, online and mobile to show quarter on quarter growth.

  • BBC World News Horizons returns to explore ‘Carmageddon’

BBC World News Horizons returns to explore ‘Carmageddon’

Mumbai: In the third series of Horizons, Adam Shaw travels to Detroit to meet Ford Motors executive chairman Bill Ford Jr to discuss his vision for mass mobility and the revolution that is needed to prevent global gridlock or what some are calling, ‘Carmageddon’.

As the world’s population increases and the number of people living in cities rises, it will become more difficult to move around our urban areas.

Bill Ford Jr said: “We see global gridlock as an issue of human rights, not just one tied to business and economics. If I think of our mission at Ford, we started off making cars and then we became a car and truck company, but really we’re a mobility company. And if we think of ourselves as that, and I do, then that opens up lots of possibilities. If we do nothing today, that mobility will be severely compromised in the future.”

The programme then heads to Volvo in Sweden where they are developing driverless vehicles. Using radars, lasers and high-specification computers, the idea is to integrate a suite of technologies that can detect pedestrians, and allow cars to cruise at speed in convoys.

In Shanghai, reporter James Chau looks at how China’s largest metropolis moves millions of people around the growing mega-city and how authorities are trying to get people out of their cars. James also takes a trip on the Shanghai Metro to see how one of China’s most efficient and extensive public transport networks runs.

James also visits the Hongqiao Transportation Hub, one of the first transport hubs in the world to integrate air, high speed rail, metro and road under one roof, all within a ten minute walk of each another. Known as one of the world’s largest interchanges, Hongqiao deals with more than a million passengers a day. With numbers expected to grow rapidly, James explores the operations of the hub and how it is dealing with the rising numbers.

The Horizons series, sponsored by DuPont, airs weekly on Saturdays at 7.00am and 2.00pm, Sundays at 8.00pm. The sponsorship arrangement was facilitated by BBC Advertising, which sells advertising and sponsorship solutions on behalf of BBC World News and bbc.com.
