India continues to be the largest market for BBC global audiences

Mumbai: The latest figures released by the BBC Global Audience Measurement (GAM) 2024 show that India continues to be the BBC’s largest market with over 80 million people consuming the BBC’s content in India every week.

BBC News Hindi remains the biggest language service among the 42 languages that BBC World Service operates in with 39 million people coming to the service on average every week.

Across the BBC’s six Indian language services, a total of more than 50 million people came to the services during the election result week with BBC News Hindi reaching nearly 30 million people in that week alone.

BBC News Marathi, BBC News Tamil, BBC News Gujarati, BBC News Telugu, and BBC News Punjabi all saw increases in reach figures as audiences came to the BBC for trusted, accurate and impartial news on the election.

During elections in June 2024, the scores for the BBC in India increased on trust, impartiality, and Independence, as per the BBC Brand Tracker.

The overall international audience reach of the BBC stands at 450 million people on average every week.

The annual reach figure, which includes the total reach for BBC News, BBC World Service and BBC Studios, remains resilient in the face of increased investment and fierce competition from other news providers, including state-funded news companies. The weekly average global reach was recorded at 447m in 2023.

The BBC retains the pole position for trust and is also ranked first for reliability and independence among international news providers.

Collective Newsroom CEO Rupa Jha said: “These figures demonstrate our reach in India remains resilient following a year of big news events and audiences coming to the BBC for trusted news. I am immensely proud of what our Indian teams have delivered over the past year, and the outstanding journalism they have produced for audiences in India and around the world.”

Three Indian women, including Dia Mirza and Harmanpreet Kaur, named in BBC’s 100 Women 2023 list

Mumbai: Three Indian women have been included in this year’s BBC 100 Women list of inspiring and influential women.

For the first time, to recognise the disproportionate impact of climate change on the lives of women and girls, this year’s BBC 100 Women list specifically highlights a group of women leading the battle against the climate crisis.

By naming 28 climate pioneers from all corners of the globe, the BBC 100 Women list 2023 celebrates those inspiring and leading their communities to tackle and adapt to the devastating impact of climate change in their regions.

The announcement of this year’s list kicks off the BBC’s 100 Women 2023 season – focusing on women’s right and diverse life experiences around the globe, with special content including interviews, documentaries, features, digital and social journalism, across the BBC’s UK and global TV and radio services, BBC iPlayer and BBC.com.

The Indian women included in this year’s list are:

1   Dia Mirza, award winning actress from Indian cinema, who is involved in numerous environmental and humanitarian projects.

2   Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the India women’s national cricket and the first Indian woman to be named as one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year.

Arati Kumar-Rao, an independent photographer, writer, and National Geographic Explorer, who documents the changing landscape across South Asia, caused by climate change. One of BBC 100 Women’s 28 Climate Pioneers.

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, who was born in England in the 1940s, but became one the first Westerners to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monastic after travelling to India at the age of 20, is also included on the list.

Other notable names from the BBC 100 Women 2023 list include former First Lady of the United States, attorney and campaigner Michelle Obama, footballer Aitana Bonmatí, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, actresses America Ferrera, beauty mogul Huda Kattan, AI expert Timnit Gebru, campaigner Ulanda Mtamba, writer Oksana Zabuzhko and feminist leader Gloria Steinem.

Yet it is the new names that make the BBC 100 women list so unique. Among them are the 28 Climate Pioneers, announced to coincide with the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, starting later this month in Dubai.

They include Paraguayan sprinter Camila Pirelli, South African freediving instructor Zandile Ndhlovu, Pakistani midwife Neha Mankani, Nigerian mental health advocate Jennifer Uchendu and Thai campaigner for indigenous and LGBTQ+ rights Matcha Phorn-in.

Other women celebrated for their work tackling the climate crisis in different fields, include Brazil’s state minister Sonia Guajajara, firefighter Sofia Kosacheva, and climate advisers Iryna Stavchuk and Christiana Figueres.

The season will look at the practice of child marriage, as 12 million underaged girls are forced into marriage every year. It will explore the spike in climate anxiety concerns with a data-led project, and hear from women whose reproductive choices have been impacted by environmental concerns. It’ll go on the road with Mexican truck drivers in a heavily male-dominated and dangerous business, and also travel up the mountains with a group of shepherdesses who brought wealth and transformed their community in less than a generation.

Their income has brought prosperity to the village and allowed them to build roads and provide an education for their children – but their tradition is about to end. BBC 100 Women follows the last shepherdesses on their journey up the mountains, on a dangerous trek 4,800m above sea level.

  • BBC launches ‘Disinformation Unit’ in India to combat misinformation

BBC launches ‘Disinformation Unit’ in India to combat misinformation

Mumbai: BBC News has launched a new ‘Disinformation Unit’ in India to uncover, analyse and report on the spread of fake news. According to a statement, a team of dedicated journalists will focus on highlighting false information, debunking viral social media content and investigating how and why it spreads. The team will provide audiences with useful tips and information on how to spot ‘fake news’ and prevent it from spreading further.

Audiences will also be able to report on any fake news they think should be investigated by messaging the BBC’s Disinformation Unit.

This newly launched unit in India is an extension of the BBC’s continued commitment to combat misinformation and is a part of the BBC Global Disinformation unit, which includes experienced journalists based in Africa and the UK.

“Disinformation is a global issue that disregards boundaries of languages, platforms, cultures, and age-groups. Unchecked news can affect health, society and democracy,” said BBC Disinformation editor Rebecca Skippage. “This new team of dedicated journalists will allow us to shine a light on misleading information and help people decide for themselves what to believe and what to mistrust.”

Simultaneously, a scheme called BBC Young Reporter India has rolled out ‘media awareness workshops’ in schools across India to help young people think critically about the media they consume, recognise facts from fake and pause before sharing potentially misleading and harmful information. The workshops are being delivered in partnership with Internews and DataLeads teams.

This initiative will deliver training to seven thousand students across hundred schools in India by the end of the year. Over five thousand have already attended the workshops in more than forty-five Indian cities, said the statement.

“The pandemic has shown the appalling damage that misinformation can cause. Fake cures, anti-vax messaging and conspiracy theories have been widely shared, often by people thinking they are doing the right thing as neighbours and friends,” stated  BBC Beyond Fake News head Marie Helly. “It is imperative that the next generation become responsible citizens who understand the difference between fact and fake and can think critically about the media they consume.”

“Trust, accuracy and impartiality are at the heart of the BBC.  I am delighted by the quality of the students and trainers who are working together with the BBC to counter the dangers of misinformation here in India,” Helly further said.

The workshops are building a network of young people who can spot disinformation using a BBC fact-checking technique called ‘Real’ and educating the students to think analytically like journalists.

“The workshop actually helped the students to navigate and take the right direction in the digital world. It has been a relevant training session to learn the skill of identifying the authenticity of the news which are at the fingertips of the students in the changed scenario,” commented SRS English Medium School (Brahmavar) Karnataka principal Abhilasha S.

“The BBC Young Reporter workshop has been immensely enlightening and enriching for the students. The webinar was impactful enough to generate awareness amongst the students to be discerning users of social media,” said Delhi Public School (Nazira) Assam headmistress Meenakshi Duarah. “The students were exposed to a lot of significant things to be kept in mind while using social media. Apart from the students, the teachers who attended the webinar also found it beneficial for the students.”

How brands can take the sustainability leap

Mumbai: Rising global temperatures and environmental degradation has left the world on the cusp of major climate change.
