  • Balaji Telefilms’ TV show report card for H1 2016

Balaji Telefilms’ TV show report card for H1 2016

BENGALURU: How is Balaji Telefilms – India’s leading TV production house  – faring as far its contribution to the ratings of its major clients – Star Plus, Zee TV, Colors, Sony, and DD – is concerned? Indiantelevision.com decided to give you a sneak peek using the company’s presentation filed with the BSE for the last quarter. Bear in mind that in its December 2015 corporate presentation, Balaji Telefilms has mentioned BARC ratings and its contributions while in its September 2015 presentation, the company indicated TAM parameters. And we are comparing the numbers for H1-2016 with FY-2015.

Despite the difference in the two rating bodies’ matrices, this article tries to show the variance of Balaji Telefilms’ contribution to the channels’ GRPs between Week 37 and Week 45, while indicating the slot leaders on these channels. That Balaji Telefilms is a major contributor to most, if not all the channels’ GRPs, is a foregone conclusion.

    Channels contribution to Balaji’s revenues

The Star network replaced the Zee Network as the major contributor to Balaji’s revenues in H1-2016 due to Nach Baliye 7 on Star Plus and the discontinuation of Jodha Akbar on Zee TV. The Star network contributed 35 per cent to the company’s revenues in H1-2016 as compared to the 19 per cent it had contributed in FY-2015.

In FY-2015, the Zee Network’s contribution to Balaji Telefilms’ revenue was 44 per cent, whereas in H1-2016 it declined to 28 per cent as per the company’s December 2015 corporate presentation.

Colors’ contribution to Balaji Telefilms’ revenues in H1-2016 increased to 14 per cent as compared to 12 per cent for FY-2015. Sony also increased its contribution in percentage terms to Balaji Telefilms revenues in H1-2016 to 13 per cent from nine per cent in FY-2015, as did Life OK – its contribution to Balaji Telefilms revenues increased to 10 per cent from seven per cent in the previous financial year.

Sony Pal and Doordarshan (DD) had contributed four and five per cent respectively to the company’s revenues in FY-2015, but have made no contribution to Balaji Telefilms’ revenues in the current half year. The company says that DD’s contribution dropped down to zero per cent due to postponing the revenue realisation to the last quarter of FY-2016. Balaji Telefilms says that the new shows from Q3-2016 onwards will further strengthen the contribution of Colors, Star Plus, &TV and Sony to its revenues.

Let’s see how the top three channels fared in weeks 37 and 45 across the two ratings systems vis-?-vis some Balaji Telefilms soaps:

    Week 37

In week 37, as per BARC ratings, Colors led the chart with a considerable rise in ratings and grabbed first place amongst the Hindi GECs with 414841 (000Sums) as against 386518 (000Sums) in week 36. Though Star Plus witnessed a rise in ratings, it stood behind Colors in the second spot with 381365 (000Sums) as compared to 370135 (000Sums) in the previous week. Zee TV and Life OK were perched at the third and fourth slot with 256811 (000Sums) and 221762 (000Sums) respectively. Sab secured the fifth berth in the list with 183879 (000Sums).

As per TAM, it was Star Plus that held on to its lead position in Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) category in week 37 for HSM (including LC1) with 237 GRPs. Colors was in the second slot with 219 GRPs, while Zee TV secured third position with 159 GRPs.

So there is a difference in the top two slots between the two systems – according to BARC, Colors had the highest GRPs, while according to TAM, Star Plus had the highest GRPs in week 37. The third spot according to both the systems belonged to Zee TV.

    Week 45

According to BARC, Star Plus led the Hindi GEC genre with 748197 (000Sums), while Zee Anmol bagged the second position with 717923 (000Sums). Colors secured third spot with 656542 (000Sums), while Zee TV fell to the fourth position with 638475 (000Sums).

According to TAM, Colors bagged the first spot with 236 GRPs in week 45 against 221 GRPs in week 44. Star Plus saw a decline in ratings to second slot with 226 GRPs against 239 GRPs in previous week followed by Zee TV in the third spot with 152 GRPs and Life OK at fourth place with 138 GRPs.

Here again there is a difference – TAM says that Colors had the first place in terms of GRPs, while Star Plus was second, and BARC data says that Star Plus was first and Colors second.

  • BARC India eyes digital measurement; calls for global RFIs

BARC India eyes digital measurement; calls for global RFIs

MUMBAI: The Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India has issued a global Request For Information (RFI) as it readies itself to expand audience measurement to the digital space.

After gathering this information, BARC India will issue a subsequent Request for Proposal (RFP) that is realistic in its scope.

The television ratings measurement body aims to measure all forms of online video advertising, including ad breaks in live streams, pre-roll and mid-roll videos, and targeted/addressable advertising linked to the content on broadcaster sites or social media or any other website/apps.

“At BARC India, our aim is to continually evolve in a way that suits the ever changing content viewing habits. After rolling out the television viewership measurement in the country, we are now ready to take the next leap, that of measuring digital viewing,” said BARC India CEO Partho Dasgupta.

In the RFI, applicants have been asked to outline how their offerings work, the types of video, devices and platforms the company is able to measure and the level of detail. The RFI must also highlight whether the approach requires third party action.

This comes after television becoming a cross-platform medium, available through a variety of distribution systems, including broadcast, IP, mobile networks and a growing number of connected screens through, which audio-visual content is consumed.

The RFIs will facilitate understanding of the capabilities of online video advertising and content measurement techniques with regards to panel and census measurement across video types, devices and platforms.

  • One week in DD Freedish takes Big Magic Ganga to number two from five

One week in DD Freedish takes Big Magic Ganga to number two from five

MUMBAI: Television audience ratings measurement body Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India after the roll-out of its rural data has changed the entire dynamics of television viewership. BARC India’s rural roll-out resonated Bob Dylan’s famous lines in every ear as an alarm. Don’t speak too soon, for the wheel’s still in spin. And there’s no tellin’ who That it’s namin’. For the loser now Will be later to win, For the times they are a-changin. The rural data certainly gave all the followers wings of fire which got them right over the leaders who probably never thought of trailing.

But once that has happened, it was time for the erstwhile leaders to act and act fast before too much damage was done. Big Magic Ganga, the Bhojpuri channel from Anil Dhirubhai Ambani’s broadcast conglomerate Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL) had been leading the urban tally with over 45 per cent of the viewership share since BARC’s inception. Week 41 ratings of BARC India which had the rural data included in it saw the channel sliding down to the fifth position with a humongous difference when compared to the leaders.

The top brass then got together to work out a strategy and the permutations and combinations lead them to the best friend of rural India – DD Freedish. DD Freedish is Doordarshan’s direct-to-home innovation which enables one to watch content for free. There is only a one time charge that one needs to bear and after that it’s free for life.

“In the urban market we were undisputed number one. But after BARC started to roll out its rural data we lost our position. 85 per cent of the total viewers in Bihar and Jharkhand are DD Freedish subscribers, hence we decided to have a presence on the platform” says RBNL COO Ashwin Padmanabhan

The decision did not take much time turn the tables, as with a rating of 38455 (000s Sum) the channel leapfrogged to second position, below Bhojpuri Cinema which garnered 41361 (000s Sum) in week 45. “We are happy to see the surge and it has been just a week. The others on the list were there on DD Freedish since a very long time” explains Padmanabhan.

Big Magic Ganga has 5 to 6 hours of original content curated keeping the local sentiments in mind. The programming is also a strong weapon for the channel says Padmanabhan. Elucidating further he says, “From the beginning we have believed that content is what drives the channel to success. We invested on setting up a local team which works extensively to create relevant content. Recently we did a special programme on Chatt and it emerged as one of the top 5 shows in the genre. We will continue to explore and create original content which the viewers will cherish.”

Phase III of digitisation has a deadline of 31 December. Padmanabhan feels that the mandatory shifting to DAS might see a huge number of consumers shifting to DD Freedish. “Buying a set-top box itself is an expensive proposition and after that the cost per house will also go up. Why will people pay more while they can watch content for free on DD Freedish. Having said so, digitization will help us grow the subscription revenue so it’s good for broadcasters” says Padmanabhan.

There is no subscription revenue that comes out of DD Freedish, since it is a free platform. In markets like Bihar and Jharkhand a channel like Big Magic Ganga does not rely on subscription revenue at this stage informs Padmanabhan. The COO says, “Advertisement is directly proportional to viewership and quality of content. Our advertisers are happy to associate with us as they know the content we create is relevant to viewers and hence it provides them the platform to garner eyeballs.”

FMCG leads the tally while is comes to category of advertisers closely followed by automobile companies. Two wheelers and affordable cars are seen frequently during breaks. Local advertisers which want to target that particular audience are also seen frequently between breaks.

A media planner on condition of anonymity says, “The ad rates for a 10 second slot in a channel like Big Magic Ganga used to be close to Rs 1000. But after the rural roll-out now it would be somewhere between Rs 2000-3000. Post January we might see a further inclination to the ad rates depending on how the broadcasters plan out their strategy.”

Creating content is not enough to reach out to a huge number. Every initiative needs to be backed by aggressive marketing says Padmanabhan. He further adds, “We believe in marketing each and every product independently. If a particular product needs an aggressive on-ground push, we opt for on-ground marketing initiatives. Depending on the product, we curate our marketing strategy. Radio, print, outdoor, cross network promotions are the mediums that we normally use.”

The COO wants to see the channel an undisputed leader not only in terms of viewership but also content and revenue. “170 – 180 GRP is what I am eying at in terms of viewership while a 200 to 300 per cent surge in the ad rates is my target in terms of ad-revenue growth. I am confident that by January once the new rating phenomenon settles down we will meet the target” Padmanabhan concludes.
