    BARC week 10: Bhojpuri Dhamaka Dishum replaces Dabangg in Bhojpuri market

    MUMBAI: In week ten of BARC India ratings, Bhojpuri Dhamaka Dishum replaced Dabangg in fifth position. Zee Punjabi and Colors Kannada jumped to second position in Punjabi and Kannada markets, respectively. Zee Keralam also jumped to third position in the Malayalam market. However, Gemini TV slipped down to fourth position from second in Telugu market. No changes were observed in the Gujarati, Marathi and Tamil markets.

    In the Bangla market, Star Jalsha, Zee Bangla, Jalsha Movies, Colors Bangla and Sony Aath were the top five channels in week ten of BARC India ratings.

    BARC week 9: News18 Gujarati enters top five channels list

    MUMBAI: In week 9 of BARC India ratings, News18 Gujarati entered the top five channel list at fifth position. The channel replaced VTV News which was observed in the fifth position last week. No significant changes were observed in the pecking order of channels in the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi markets.

    In the Bangla market, Star Jalsha, Zee Bangla, Jalsha Movies, Sony Aath and Colors Bangla were the top five channels in week 9 of BARC India ratings. 

    In the Bhojpuri market, Bhojpuri Cinema, Big Ganga, Zee Biskope, B4U Bhojpuri and Dabangg were the top five channels in week nine of BARC India ratings.

    In Gujarati market, Colors Gujarati Cinema, Colors Gujarati, ABP Asmita, TV9 Gujarati and News18 Gujarati were the top five channels in week nine of BARC India ratings. 

    In Kannada market, Zee Kannada, Star Suvarna, Colors Kannada, Udaya TV, and Udaya Movies were the top five channels and no changes were observed in the pecking order of channels in week nine of BARC India ratings.

    BARC week 9: Sony SAB leads in urban and pay platforms

    MUMBAI: Sony SAB grabbed the leading position on pay platform and in urban market in week 9 of BARC India ratings. Last week, the channel led in the urban market and this week it jumped from the second position to the first position on pay platform with 6,87,284 weekly impressions (000s) sum. On pay platform Sony Pal has replaced Colors Rishtey in the tenth position.

    On pay platform Sony SAB, Star Plus, Colors, Zee TV, Sony Entertainment Television, Star Bharat, Dangal, Star Utsav, &TV and Sony Pal were the top 10.

    In urban market, the top ten channels were Sony SAB, Star Plus, Colors, Sony Entertainment Television, Zee TV, Dangal, Star Bharat, &TV, Star Utsav, and Big Magic in week 9 of BARC India ratings.

    Urban

    Dangal, Big Magic, Zee TV, Star Plus, Sony SAB, Colors, Sony Entertainment Television, Star Bharat, Star Utsav and Colors Rishtey were the top ten channels in the rural market.   

    Rural

    On free platform Dangal, Big Magic, DD National, Manoranjan Grand, DD Bharati, DD Madhya Pradesh, DD Rajasthan,  DD Uttar Pradesh, and  DD Arunprabha were the top nine channels in BARC ratings of week nine.

    Urban female viewership slows down on Hindi GEC, rises for sports and news: BARC

    MUMBAI: Women viewership is always seen dominating the Hindi GEC space and the total TV viewership of female continues to remain at 49 per cent. However, in the urban market of Hindi GEC, women viewership has declined by 4 per cent in 2019 compared to 2018 but interestingly sports and news genres has witnessed 8 per cent and 18 per cent rise in women viewership respectively.

    As per BARC India data, sports genre's women viewership had 17.6 billion impressions in 2018 while the viewership grew by eight per cent to 19.1 in 2019. Women viewership in news grew by 19 per cent to 129.4 billion impressions in 2019 from 108.5 billion impressions in 2018. In infotainment genre the female viewership has declined by nine per cent from 3.997 billion impressions in 2018 to 3.6 billion impressions in 2019.

    “TV is the screen of the household and a medium which binds the family together. Female contribution to overall TV viewership continues to remain at a healthy 49 per cent. While GEC consumption continues to dominate, a sizeable time is spent by females consuming news and sports genres,” says BARC India chief operating officer Romil Ramgarhia.

    In HSM urban 2+ markets the women viewership in Hindi GEC space has witnessed a negative growth of four per cent. In 2018 the women viewership was around 85.8 billion impressions which have fallen to 82.4 billion impressions in 2019.

    As per BARC data the viewership dispersion in India 2+ market in 2018 was – sports channels witnessed 46 per cent female viewership and 54 per cent male viewership. News channels had 46 per cent female viewership and 54 per cent male viewership. Infotainment channels had 44 per cent female viewership and 56 per cent male viewership.

    In 2019, viewership dispersion in India 2+ market was – male viewership on sports channel was 59 per cent and female was 41 per cent female viewership was witnessed. In news genre viewership dispersion was at 46 per cent female and 54 per cent male. The infotainment channels had 44 per cent female and 56 per cent male viewership.

    The viewership dispersion in Hindi GEC witnessed a slight change. In 2018, Hindi GEC had 53 per cent female viewership and 47 per cent male viewership. In 2019 the percentage of female viewership reduced to 52 per cent and male viewership increase to 48 per cent.

    MUMBAI: In week 7 of BARC India ratings, Star Jalsha grabbed the leading position in the Bangla market with 333409 weekly impressions (000s).  Zee Bangla slipped down to the second position. Sony Aath entered the list at the fifth position by replacing Zee Bangla Cinema. In the Bhojpuri market, Bhojpuri Cinema regained its leading position. For the past two weeks Zee Biskope was seen at the first position but the channel slipped down to second this week. No significant changes were observed in Marathi, Kannada and Gujarati markets.  

    In Bangla market, Star Jalsha, Zee Bangla, Jalsha Movies, Colors Bangla and Sony Aath were the top five channels in week 07 of BARC India ratings.

    MUMBAI: In week 7 of BARC India ratings, Sony SAB jumped to second position in the urban market and on the pay platform. Last week, the channel had slipped down to fourth position on pay platform but this week it has grabbed second position with 488383 weekly impressions (000s). In the urban market it attracted 687312 weekly impressions (000s). Star Plus slipped down to third position on pay platform and urban market whereas Colors led the pay platform and urban market. 

    The top ten channels on pay platform were Colors, Sony SAB, Star Plus, Zee TV, Sony Entertainment Television, Star Bharat, Dangal, Star Utsav, &TV and Colors Rishtey in week 6 of BARC India ratings.

    BARC week 6: Four Zee regional channels lead regional markets

    MUMBAI: In week six of BARC India ratings, Zee's four regional channels  Zee Bangla, Zee Biskope, Zee Marathi and Zee Kannada led in Bangla, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Kannada markets respectively. Zee Punjabi and Zee were seen holding second position in their respective market, whereas Zee Tamil holds third position in the Tamil market. 

    In Bangla market, Zee Bangla, Star Jalsha, Jalsha Movies, Zee Bangla Cinema and Colors Bangla were the top Bangla channels in week 06 of BARC India ratings. Last week Star Jalsha held the leading position in the Bangla market. This Colors Bangla also entered replacing Sun Bangla in the list.

    MUMBAI: Sony SAB slipped to fourth position in week six of BARC India ratings. Last week, the channel was seen at third position. This week Zee TV held the third position moving up from fourth position. Colors continued to lead in urban market and pay platform.

    In urban market, Colors, Star Plus, Sony SAB, Sony Entertainment Television, Zee TV, Dangal, Star Bharat, &TV, Star Utsav and Big Magic were the top ten channels in week six of BARC India ratings. Big Magic replaced Colors Rishtey in tenth position this week.

    Experimentation, innovation, risky moves enable Colors to top the charts: Viacom18’s Nina Elavia Jaipuria

    MUMBAI: What's the secret sauce that has been adding flavour to Hindi GEC Colors lately? For the past few weeks Viacom18's Hindi GEC Colors has been seen in the leading position in the urban market and pay platform of BARC India’s weekly ratings. The channel has been leading with 22 per cent market share and 26 per cent market share in the primetime slot. According to Viacom18 Hindi mass entertainment and kids TV network head Nina Elavia Jaipuria, experimentation, innovation and bold moves have helped Colors in becoming the number one channel.

    Jaipuria says that the credit goes to the channel's selection of both fiction and non-fiction. If anyone thought that Colors depended only on Bigg Boss, she says, "We can’t sustain a number one position only on one reality show. We have been bold, we have taken risks and we have experimented with fiction shows too. We've been a pioneer in white spaces; we've told stories that have never been told in the past.”

    The channel will continue to invest in content and in properties that deliver reality, but at the same time, it will also ensure that it has a strong primetime line-up in fiction. Right now in the primetime slot the channel is running drama series like Vidya at 7 pm; Choti Sarrdaarni at 7.30 pm; Shakti at 8 pm; Barrister Babu at 8.30 pm; Shubhaarambh at 9 pm; Naati Pinky… at 9.30 pm; Bepanah Pyyaarr at 10 pm (the slot will be replaced by new show Pavitra Bhagya from 2 March) and Mujhse Shaadi Karoge at 10.30 pm. Colors also has the long running strong  offering  Naagin running on weekends' primetime.

    Bigg Boss 13 has witnessed unprecedented success with 200 million viewers on TV, two billion views on social media and 1.5 billion views on VOOT. Japuria says, “Success is not always measured with one metric. I feel it can only be a success if it is a win-win for all stakeholders and to me Bigg Boss is one such property. Not only did it get us the viewers, the relation that viewers had with the show was unprecedented, it also had a phenomenal success on social media and it took the show from television to digital.”

    She adds, “The other metric was that in this disruptive NTO phase it ensured that consumers choose Colors over any other channel. And the last stakeholder is our advertiser and this year was unprecedented from that perspective too. We had the largest advertiser support not just on the main show but even on the extension. We had a fabulous top line on the show and a very profitable show and therefore it made sense from the business perspective. Therefore, Bigg Boss to me, was a complete unprecedented success for all stakeholders.”

    Taking the baton from one reality show to another, Colors will be lauching Khatron Ke Khiladi season 10 from 22 February. The show garnered 222 million viewers last year and became its biggest reality show in FY 2019.

    The advertiser interest despite the economic slowdown bodes well for broadcasters. “Even though there is a slowdown in the economy and it's been sluggish, advertisers are ready to put their money in winning properties. But the biggest example was in the extension of the show where most of the advertisers who had come with us in the original came back for the extension as well. Which means that advertisers are willing to pay for properties that are winning despite an economic slowdown,” says Jaipuria.

    “And that is a simple reason why Maruti Suzuki has come back with us from last year to this year as a presenting sponsor. We also have Mountain Dew this year and I don't see any better brand fit for Mountain Dew because the whole DNA of the brand is about taking risk and Khatron Ke Khiladi is nothing but that, so that's a super brand fit. And of course we have Balaji wafers as well now joining the gang, and I'm pretty sure that when the show goes on air on Saturday we will have lots of advertisers. Our team is in Delhi right now signing the deals,” she opines.

    With regards to brand integration, Jaipuria says that some of the shows have a challenge on that front because it depends on the kind of integration. "So every show has its own set of challenges and integration. So of course we will try and add value and clutter break as much as we can. But will it be as much as we did for Bigg Boss is a question," Jaipuria concludes.

    With the upcoming new fiction and non-fiction shows in primetime slots on weekdays and weekends, the channel wishes to sustain its leading position.

    MUMBAI: In regional space, Adithya TV entered the top five Tamil channels list in week 5 of BARC India ratings. The channel has replaced Star Vijay Super at fifth position. Zee Biskope continued to lead in Bhojpuri market for the third consecutive week in week 05 of BARC India ratings. No changes were observed in the pecking order of top channels in Marathi, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, and Telugu space.   

    In Bangla space, Star Jalsa, Zee Bangla, Jalsa Movies, Sun Bangla, and Zee Bangla Cinema were the top five channels in BARC ratings week 5.
