  • IPTL set to take the world of Tennis by storm

IPTL set to take the world of Tennis by storm

MUMBAI: Tennis is set to get a revolutionary league, the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), in which franchise teams based out of four Asian countries will compete. Each team will have six to ten players.

The brainchild of India’s 12-time Grand Slam doubles champion Mahesh Bhupathi, the IPTL is inspired by the television-friendly format of twenty-20 cricket’s Indian Premier League in India. Bhupathi is the Managing Director of the league, a property owned by his company Globosport.

The four franchises competing in the league will be based in Bangkok, Mumbai, Dubai and Singapore. Globosport has not disclosed the names of owners of the four franchisees.

The tennis league has the backing of a galaxy of top tennis stars. Bhupati believes the event would be television, spectator and player-friendly because of its unique model. The tourney has been branded by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic as potentially “revolutionary”.

Tennis super stars Djokovic, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and legends Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras will feature in the league. The inaugural edition is expected to be held in December 2014, prior to the Australian Open.

“We wanted a model which was TV friendly, spectator friendly and of course player friendly. The biggest complaint in tennis has been that you have no control over the time of a match. You don’t know if a Grand Slam final will be a two-hour match or a five-hour match. Here we are guaranteeing that it will be over in a maximum of three hours, so all are excited,” Bhupathi said.

The owners of the four team owners spent a total of $23,975,000 in an auction for players held in Dubai on Sunday.

The format involves 24 best-of-five round robin matches that will take place in the four cities between November 28 and December 13. The matches will consist of a set each for men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and, if required, a legends singles tiebreak to decide the match. Unlike in a standard match of tennis, where the tiebreak would be invoked if the score reached 6-all in a set, it will be invoked if the score reaches 5-all in any set.

Tennis players often complain of long season which gives them little time to rest and recover, but Bhupathi has managed to convince them to play in the league. Tennis is an individual sport, so we don’t get to play team competitions except for Davis cup and Fed Cup, so the players liked this concept of team event.

On why Bhupathi, Justin Gimelstob, a member of the ATP board, and legend Boris Becker chose to concentrate on just Asia, Bhupathi said, “There is a big demand for tennis in the region. The players are involved in exhibition matches during the year. There’s a huge appetite for world class tennis here. That’s why the Asian cities.”

Globosport had been working on the event for the past 15 months. “It’s not easy, since tennis is an individual sport. I spoke to a few players about the concept to make a team event where players will be bought by owners… that’s how it all started,” Bhupati expounded.

Since India hosts just one top tier men’s event in Chennai Open and no WTA event, watching stars such as Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Djokovic in action in Indian cities would surely be a treat to watch for Indian fans.
Bhupathi also said governing bodies of the game, both ATP and WTA, were very supportive of his project. The IPTL will share all the centrally generated revenue with each of the franchises.

All of those factors should result in a great, winning scenario for all involved – including tennis fans – in these parts of the world which are less frequented by top players. Sunday’s draft served as another element to the excitement, and the anticipation will build as the 2014 calendar year progresses and many of these players continue writing their respective legacies.

The first fixtures are scheduled for November 28-30 in Singapore, before the tournament moves to Bangkok (December 2-4), Mumbai (December 7-9) and finally Dubai (December 11-13).

  • Transformers 4 likely to be shot in Thailand

Transformers 4 likely to be shot in Thailand

MUMBAI: Bosses at Marvel, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and Disney are considering to shoot the fourth edition of Transformers in Thailand.
It is because of this, location managers from Marvel, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and Disney were in the country this week scouting for exotic shooting locales as part of a new promotional tour sponsored by the Thai government.
Ilt Jones, location manager for all three of the Transformers movies, has just wrapped up a tour of Thailand where he explored Bangkok as a potential shooting location for Transformers 4. It is said that it was all part of a new promotional exercise titled the Inbound Roadshow Familiarisation Tour that was hosted by the Thailand Film Office, a government body tasked with boosting foreign shooting in the tourism and lens-friendly Southeast Asian nation.
A select group of veteran Hollywood location managers took part in the one-week tour of Thailand‘s exotic locales. "We‘re very pleased with the turnout," said Scott Rosenberg, managing director of AMW International, the PR firm that organised the trip with the Thai government.
Lori Balton, acting president of the Location Managers Guild of America, participated in the Thailand excursion, along with location scouts working for Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Disney. A handful of Indian, Korean, and Japanese directors and producers were also in the country for the tour.
Designed to generate enthusiasm for working in Thailand among the industry set who matter most, the weeklong trip, which began last Monday, took the location pros to the historical ruins of Ayutthaya, through Bangkok‘s frenetic streets and canals, to a festival celebration in the northern city of Chiang Rai, and a cave kayaking in Phang Nga Bay-among other uniquely Thai points of interest.
"We‘re visiting Thailand‘s many amazing locations, but also showing the VIPs our crews, studios, labs, and equipment-everything a major international production needs," said Ms. Worateera Suvarnsorn, a spokesperson for the Thailand Film Office. "Usually we do outbound trips to the festivals and film markets to promote Thailand; this time we decided to try bringing them here."
The trip concluded with a visit to the restaurant at the top of Bangkok‘s State Tower where a climactic helicopter scene of The Hangover 2 was filmed.

  • Indian cinema centenary celebrated in Bangkok

Indian cinema centenary celebrated in Bangkok

NEW DELHI: Ten feature films including Dadasaheb Phalke’s ‘Raja Harishchandra’ are being screened at a three-day Indian film festival which opened at Bangkok yesterday.

The first-ever Indian Centenary Film festival, which is being held at the SF Cinema, Central World, is to mark the Centenary of Indian Cinema. Similar Indian film festivals are being held in other parts of the world to celebrate the centenary of the world’s largest film industry.

The opening day saw the screening of Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Maqbool’ based on William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, a psychological and action-packed thriller. This film has been to many festivals, including Bangkok. It stars Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri among others.

The restored version of the first indigenous feature film to be made in India, ‘Raja Harishchandra’ which is still incomplete as many reels are missing, was also screened.

Other films include cine craftsman Satyajit Ray’s ode to music ‘Jalsaghar’, the rarely seen 1946 movie ‘Dr Kotnis ki Amar Kahani’ by V Shantaram based on the life of Dwarkanath Kotnis, an Indian doctor who worked in China during the Japanese invasion in World War II, Rajesh Khanna-starrer ‘Anand’, Dev Anand-starrer ‘Guide’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke sanam’ by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and the new-age Bollywood film ‘Corporate’ by Madhur Bhandarkar.

In addition, there are two regional films – Girish Kassarvalli’s Kannada film ‘Gulabi Talkies’ and ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ in Tamil by Mani Ratnam.

At a press meet prior to the Festival, the Indian Embassy confessed it had been a tough task selecting just ten films “to reflect the diversity of the country.” Indian Ambassador Anil Wadhwa was the chief guest.

The press meet was attended by top Thai directors like Nonzee Nimibutr and Prachya Pinkaew, as well as young indie director Choyanop Boonprakob, and actress Ae Maneerat Khamoun, all diehard lovers of Indian cinema.

Suvanee Chinchiewchan of the SF Cinema group which organised the festival was excited about holding the first-even Indian film festival in the city, and hoped the trend would continue.

  • Viacom18 to release Kahaani on 9 March, Kolkata premiere a day before

Viacom18 to release Kahaani on 9 March, Kolkata premiere a day before

MUMBAI: Viacom18 will be releasing the Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani on 9 March.

Reports in trade papers had said that director Sujoy Ghosh, who had wanted to host a premiere of the film in Kolkata because the film has a Kolkata connection, was aggrieved that it could not be held on 8 March.

The reason that was attributed was that some prominent Bengali directors and actors whom Ghosh wanted to invite for the premiere would be away for an award ceremony in Bangkok. Slamming such reports, Ghosh quipped,” There is no truth in the news. I will indeed hold the premiere of my film in Kolkata only and on the appointed day and time.”

Kahaani is the story of Vidya Bagchi who arrives in Kolkata from London to find her missing husband Arnab. Seven months pregnant and alone in a festive city, she begins a relentless search for her husband. With nothing to rely on except fragments from her memories about him, all clues seem to reach a dead end when everyone tries to convince Vidya that her husband does not exist.

She slowly realises that nothing is what it seems. In a city soaked in lies, Vidya is determined to unravel the truth about her husband – for herself and her unborn child – even at the cost of her own life. The rest forms the crux of the film.

  • Rascals: A poor comic film

    Rascals: A poor comic film

MUMBAI: With most stars turning to film production and also since most are past their romantic role playing age, a comedy film seems to be the only choice.

Producer: Sanjay Dutt, Sanjay Ahluwalia, Vinay Choksey.
    Director: David Dhawan.
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Kangna Ranaut, Lisa Ray, Chunky Pandey, Arjun Rampal, Satish Kaushik.

The The film Rascals is actor Sanjay Dutt‘s foray into film production; playing safe, he opts for a comedy film entrusting the helm to David Dhawan who has quite a successful track record with this genre. But the fact that a comedy would need a good writer with some very sharp gags seems to have been overlooked.

Dutt and Ajay Devgn are two conmen, rather born conmen as the animation depiction in the film‘s titles would suggest. Next the duo pick on Arjun Rampal, a self styled toughie; while Ajay Devgn steals his bag with Rs 3 million in cash, Sanjay Dutt makes away with his Mercedes.

Soon both are headed for Bangkok sitting next to each other on a flight trying to con each other where Devgn emerges the loser as Dutt makes away with all his cash and belongings. Both check into a ritzy hotel and their con business turns to game of outwitting each other to find favours with Kangna Ranaut who they see splashing her money around.

The rest of the con game consists of both the lead men contesting for who smooches and necks Kangna Ranaut the most! There are a few distractions in the form of Chunky Pandey, Lisa Ray, Satish Kaushik and Hiten Paintal brought in and out of scene at whim; hence, effectively contributing nothing.

The script has no coherence and the gags on which the film is built are banal and childish, the laughable ones being about three in all! With no script to go on, David Dhawan manages a farce at best and the only time you are amazed at his confidence is when he lives the film‘s end open to a sequel!

Dutt and Devgn both lacking a natural comic streak resort to buffoonery and seem to be the only ones enjoying what they are doing instead of letting the audience in on it too. Kangna Ranaut is supposed to contribute in oomph; not burdened with much clothing, she manages that amply. Arjun Rampal is wasted while with Chunky Pandey, Satish Kaushik and Lisa Ray nothing is expected and nothing is forthcoming. Lack of catchy songs is made up by bevy of dancers and crowds. Bangkok locations are pleasant. But, then, they have been so in all the horde of recent films shot there! For a funny film, dialogue writing is sad.

Rascals is a poor example of a comic film which will start telling on its box office performance within first three days.

Love Breakup Zindagi: Just another love story

Producer: Sahara Motion Pictures, Born Free Entertainment P Ltd.
    Director: Sahil Sangha.
Cast: Zayed Khan, Dia Mirza, Cyrus Sahukar, Tisca Chopra, Satyadeep Misra, Vaibhavi Talwar, Pallavi Sharda, Umang Jain, Anurita Ghosh.

Weddings are still the popular tried and tested situations for a new love to blossom; what is more, they also give you scope to use upample footage of a thin story line in the name of colourful marriage rituals like sangeet, mehendi etc.

Love Breakup Zindagi is one more in the line up of wedding romances with a bit of contemporary where a boy and girl from different worlds meet and are drawn to each other but don‘t instantly say ‘I love you‘, leaving scope open for other part of the film‘s story to materialise.

Zayed Khan is a well placed adman in Delhi with his associate and friend Cyrus Sahukar as his soul mate. Zayed Khan has a steady girl friend in career oriented Pallavi Sharda who is not totally convinced she is the girl for him while Cyrus Sahukar is twice divorced and, hence, much experienced in the ways of women‘s matters. Dia Mirza is a Mumbai based creative kind whose banker boy friend, Vaibhav Talwar, is too busy for them to find a suitable date to marry.

There is boy‘s side and there is girl‘s side in a wedding: Zayed Khan and Cyrus Sahukar are from the boy‘s (Satyadeep Misra) side while Dia Mirza is from the girl‘s. Anurita Ghosh, a friend, lands up at Chandigarh to attend their wedding. Somehow, a Punjabi wedding is a norm for film love stories to flourish! A twin love story starts at the wedding, Zayed and Dia Mirza being ones to be attracted to each other and Cyrus Sahukar finding his third love in Tisca Chopra.

Wedding over, the four are back on their respective desks only for Zayed Khan to be conveniently sent to Mumbai for office work while, also conveniently, her suitor, Vaibhav Talwar having to go to Singapore. The seeds of romance, sowed in Chandigarh, take roots as Zayed Khan is taken on a Mumbai Darshan tour by Dia Mirza. For things to fall in place in the end, she puts all her daily sojourns down in a diary which can work out a quick understanding on parts of all concerned and bring the film to a happy end!

The problem with Love Breakup Zindagi is that it is just another love story with an Indian wedding as the backdrop. Things are held out on a platter for the duo to fall in love, later meet and date at fancy and bring in the third angle only for the brevity sake at the end. There are a few pleasant moments but not enough to carry a routine film with nil face value through.

Music is fairly good. While Zayed Khan and Dia Mirza are passable, Cyrus Sahukar and Tisca Chopra perform more convincingly; Umang Jain and Anurita Ghosh are good, considering this is their debut film. Vaibhav Talwar, Pallavi Sharda and Satyadeep Misra are okay.

Love Breakup Zindagi has had no takers at most centres on its opening day and nothing much is expected to change over the weekend.

Soundtrack has limited box office aspirations

    Producer:Sanjiv Goenka, Apurv Nagpal.
    Director: Neerav Ghosh.
Cast: Rajeev Khandelwal, Soha Ali Khan, Mrinalini Sharma, Mohan Kapoor.

Soundtrack is inspired from the English film It‘s All Gone Pete Tong, described as a comedy. Soundtrack, however, shows no traces of a comedy and, if at all it had to be slotted in a genre since it does not fit any regular one, it can be slotted into a new genre — weird film.

The film is about a small town lad, Rajeev Khandelwal, who comes to Mumbai gifted with his zeal for music; soon he is a top sound maker on the disco circuit, almost a genius. The success goes to his head and life is all about wine, women and drugs thereafter. However, the profession of loud noises in nightclubs does take its toll on his life; soon he is losing his hearing, thanks to noise and drug abuse and finally he is stone deaf.

This all had to happen to him just when he was on the verge of getting a break to score a film soundtrack. While the hero lives his life in fast lane, there is his alter ego, dressed as a clown, one never figures out doing what: is he a good impression on the hero or a bad one? Whatever it may be, the alter ego is surely an irritant for the viewer.

Now the genius is AWOL since he does not want the world to know about his deafness and all sorts of speculations are made about his act; from RJs to DJs to singers and filmy music composers comment on him and his absence. In-between there are slides quoting the greatest composer in history, Beethovan, who also went deaf but continued to compose, conduct and perform after the handicap.

Ditched by his woman, Rajeev Khandelwal comes to terms with his plight; he meets Soha Ali Khan, a deaf person, who teaches him to lip read as well as to cope with life after deafness. Rajeev Khandelwal descends back to earth, turns into an obedient momma‘s son and overcomes his shortcoming to prove his genius scoring a number his father taught him as a child to present it in public performance.

Not much credit can be given to writer/director, the source being a foreign film. Musical score is good, fast paced. Rajeev Khandelwal does a good job carrying almost the entire burden of the film. Soha Ali Khan is okay.

Sountrack is not the kind of film to nurse any box office aspirations.

  • AFP to launch international news service

AFP to launch international news service

MUMBAI: French news wire Agence France-Presse (AFP) is broadening its focus with the launch of AFPTV International.

AFPTV will offer video reports every day and plans to produce 150 reports a month. Initially these reports will be in English and French. Reports in Arabic, Spanish and other languages will follow.

AFP company chairman Pierre Louette said, “On the basis of a service set up in 2001 called AFP Video, we are moving on to AFPTV, a new international service made up of around 40 video journalists and several production units worldwide.”

“We need to develop video production to enable the growth of our multimedia products. While video is at the heart of the agency’s multimedia plans, multimedia development is central to the agency’s development prospects,” he added.

AFP’s television production was started in 1996 under a partnership accord with US financial news agency Bloomberg. AFP global news director Denis Hiault said, “We opted for a novel approach unlike that practised by the competition a decade ago.

“We process news with our own specific vision, our multicultural approach, in order to best analyze it. Rather than offering just the umpteenth version of a Baghdad booby-trapped car attack or the latest riot, our film comes with keys to understanding the news, with analysis that gives meaning to the information,” he said.

AFPTV service grew after the setup in 2005 of two test production centres, one in Baghdad, the other in Warsaw covering Eastern Europe.

“The choice of the location of our production units was based on our decision to provide something extra in comparison with the competition, as well as offering coverage of geographical areas they had shunned,” Hiault said.

AFP has set up permanent video positions in New Delhi, Istanbul, Bangkok, Cairo, Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro.

“This is AFP’s most ambitious project since the launch of our international photo service two decades ago. It’s a new opportunity to demonstrate our editorial know-how and bolster our place in the field as a primary source of information. Our video footage is based on the same criteria of excellence as our text dispatches,” said Hiault.

AFP this year plans to further increase its capacity to collect images. “By the summer of 2007 the agency will have internet-quality images thanks to telephone-camera equipment being distributed to journalists on a voluntary basis,” said Louette.
