Four Indian films including ‘Mary Kom’ make it to Hawaii India Spotlight

NEW DELHI: Four Indian films have made it to the 34th Hawaii International Film Festival this year in a Spotlight on India section.

The festival which has been shifted to 30 October and will continue till 9 November is made up of four Hindi titles: modern Hamlet retelling Haider, boxing biopic Mary Kom, crime drama Titli and Bang Bang, the official Bollywood remake of Knight and Day (2010).

The festival will open with Ishii Yuya’s The Vancouver Asahi about a baseball team of second-generation Japanese in the 1930’s.

The festival’s Director of Programming Anderson stated, “It is rare to see the World War II internment camp experience through the lens of Japanese nationals in a major motion picture”. The film stars Tsumabuki Satoshi.

The festival will have films from 45 countries, including more than 60 films from Asia. With the Vancouver festival downsizing its Asian lineup, Hawaii is now one of the largest showcases for Asian cinema in North America.

The festival’s main Asian lineup is programmed in spotlight sections dedicated to recent films from seven regions: Japan, South Korea, China (including Hong Kong), Taiwan, India, Philippines and Southeast Asia (excluding Philippines).

  • Bang Bang…. Just half a bang for your money..

Bang Bang…. Just half a bang for your money..

MUMBAI: Don’t try to relate the title with what is going in the film. It’s a film about a man on a mission and being a Hindi film there has to be a pretty woman accompanying him so that they can fit in some song and dance routine.

Hrithik Roshan’s assignment is to steal the Kohinoor diamond from under the nose of the British authorities. The word spreads and Danny Denzongpa and Pawan Arora, who were planning to steal it too, find out about his mission. They think since now it is with Hrithik, it would be easier for them to lay their hands on the diamond.

But the job is not as easy as Danny thought it would be. After all, Hrithik is an ex-army man and proficient in Kung Fu as well as gunfighting. Besides, he is an ace swimmer and knows every stunt in the book and then some more. As usual, Danny’s goons chase him in dozens on roads as well as in the sea. Hrithik finishes them all.

Katrina Kaif, Hrithik’s companion, has no alternative but to stay with Hrithik because the villains have seen her with him and may use her as a bait to lure him.

Hrithik was serving in Kargil when his brother, Jimmy Shergill, was killed by Danny. He leaves the army to join the Indian secret service. He knows Danny’s informers are in the service. The story of Kohinoor is concocted with the help of British secret service, MI6. That way Danny would come to find Hrithik rather than the other way around.

But, Danny, who makes an appearance in the beginning, vanishes until much later leaving the task of finishing Hrithik to his goons. Pawan Arora is also involved and plants a device to see where Katrina meets Hrithik. That turns out to be exactly what Hrithik wanted. When the cops arrive with Pawan and his goons, Hrithik, though shot, escapes after leaving the diamond on the spot. Katrina is kidnapped and Danny is livid because the Kohinoor he got from her is a fake.

Hrithik traces Katrina to Danny’s den. He has come equipped with enough material to blow up Danny’s palace.  Danny escapes to felicitate a final chase, first on road and later in water when Danny is escaping in a sea plane. Hrithik fells the sea plane with harpoon shots. The plane is on fire. Hrithik enters to save the handcuffed Karina and leaves Danny to die the same way he killed Shergill.

There is nothing about the film one has not watched in recent past. In fact, it can be called a bad version of Ek Tha Tiger. There is not much happening in the first half. Second half is aboutchases and gun fights. The script is weak. Direction is passable. Cinematography is good. Couple of songs have appeal. Hrithik and Katrina make an attractive pair. It is nice to see Danny and Pawan after some time.

    Producer: Fox Star Studios.

    Direction: Siddharth Anand.

Cast: Hrithink Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Danny Denzongpa, Pawan Arora, Jaaved Jaffrey, Jimmy Shergil, Dipti Naval, Kanwaljit Singh.

    Haider …. RIP Shakespeare!

Vishal Bhardwaj is a man who sources his films from Shakespeare. For him, it works well because there is no copyright and no price to pay and he can pretend to be intellectual. Sadly, his intellectualism costs crores to unqualified corporate houses, that want to be in the film business. In Haider, Bhardwaj adapts Shakespeare’s Hamlet. To say that he does no justice to the original and road rolls it would be an understatement.

It is hard to call when the last film that was based on a regional problem worked at the box office. Haider is about a family’s Kashmir problem—and yet it has nothing to do with Kashmir. It is in fact about a family feud, sex, disloyalty and incest. It is a film with little by way of script. Haider takes all sorts of liberties, twists the script to its convenience and, in the process, and makes a joke of its writer, director and actors.

Terrorism is the rule of the land in Kashmir and the young Haider, Shahid Kapur, is already embroiled in it when his mother, Tabu, discovers a pistol in his school bag, a way to show that Shahid has been initiated into terrorism. That too without a cause or a reason—those follow only much later when his father, whom he adores, is killed for being an accomplice of terrorists.

That moment comes when Shahid returns from studies in Aligarh. He finds his family devastated: his father has been killed and he realises that his mother has been sleeping with his Chahcha who actually got his father killed.

But instead of taking out his anger on his mother or uncle, he conveniently becomes a terrorist. In this cock and bull story, if you are angry with your mother, you take it out on your motherland, dig? Because Shahid’s mother, Tabu, sleeps around with his uncle, Kay Kay Menon, he becomes a terrorist only to kill them. No matter that terrorism means killing your own countrymen.

Sadly, nowhere does the film match Indian sensibilities. The script is such a chalta-hai kind it changes tone with every scene. It takes the viewer to be a total moron. The Indian army has been shown in bad light throughout. The Kashmiris are shown in bad light with no sense of their priorities.

With this kind of a story, the actors have little to work with. Shahid is totally at loss with whatever he is doing. Most of the time, he is made to act like a lunatic. Shraddha Kapoor appears at the whim and fancy of the director. Tabu’s character is ill-defined. That you don’t know if she is in love or is a nymphomaniac; she even kisses her son on the lips. As for Tabu and Menon’s relationship, it is still not okay with the Indian audience especially since he keeps referring to her as ‘Bhbhijaan’.

As for the script, Haider is poor; its adaptation of Hamlet is pathetic. There is no direction worth its name. The musical score is poor. Editing does not exist. The background score is monotonous. Dialogue, for a Shakespeare drama, is a let-down.

Haider is a big let-down commercially.

Producers: Vishal Bhardwaj, UTV Motion Pictures.

    Director: Vishal Bhardwaj.

Cast: Tabu, Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, Narednra Jha, Aamir Bashir.

Nazara Technologies launches ‘Bang Bang’ mobile game

MUMBAI: Nazara Technologies, one of the leading mobile game developer and publisher, has launched a game based on the much anticipated action romance of the year ‘Bang Bang’ releasing on 2 October. The game was officially launched by actor Hrithik Roshan in the presence of Nazara Technologies CEO Nitish Mittersain.

The third-person action adventure game features both the lead actors and follows the storyline of the film, where the protagonists Rajveer (Hrithik Roshan) and Harleen (Katrina Kaif) fight the enemy to retain the Kohinoor, the world’s most expensive diamond, stolen by Rajveer. The game is available to download for free on the Google Play store and soon it will be available on all other major stores too.

Mittersain said, “India has witnessed an unprecedented surge in subscribers using internet on mobiles with the number crossing 100 million last year. This clearly makes it one of the largest and most effective medium for brands to reach out to consumers, or fans in the case of movies.” He further added, “Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif are undoubtedly among the top actors in the country today, in fact they have gone beyond being just actors and are brands in themselves. This initiative will allow fans to step into Hrithik and Katrina’s shoes, giving them an opportunity to get closer to their favourite stars.”

Fox Star Studios chief marketing officer Shikha Kapur added, “Bang Bang is an action entertainer like no other. It’s replete with thrilling chases and audacious stunts that will be a first for Indian audiences. It gives us great pleasure to translate some of this action of the film to the mobile screen in the form of the Bang Bang mobile game. This is our endeavour to give users a taste of the thrill and adventure of the film through engaging gameplay and vibrant graphics. As a studio, we have always believed in the expansion of platforms so that our content reaches out to maximum users in varied ways, and bringing the Bang Bang game to the mobile screen, fits right into our strategy.”

The mobile gaming industry is at an inflection point and according to a report by KPMG and FICCI, it is expected to touch Rs 19.6 billion by 2018 largely due to the growing smartphone market in India and the improved connectivity offered by telecom operators. The Indian film industry too has been growing at a phenomenal pace with multiple films breaking the Rs 100 crore barrier over the last couple of years. Given these two factors, movie-based mobile gaming should be an exciting space to watch out for.

MUMBAI: After creating wonders in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD), one of the most popular on-screen jodis – Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif is all set to be seen together again after Bang Bang.

According to media reports, the duo will be seen in Zoya Akhtar’s next- Road.

The movie is also said to reprise the hit ZNMD troika of Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. Speculations are that Abhay and Farhan would not have a romantic backup in the film, hence it will only have one heroine.

Even though there is no official confirmation yet, reports add that Hrithik Roshan is already on board and Katrina Kaif is in the running to play the lead.

While Zoya Akhtar is currently directing Dil Dhadakne Do; Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif are presently busy with their upcoming film Bang Bang. The two actors will soon start the promotion of the film which is all set to release on 2 October.

Already, Bang Bang has created a record with its trailer by becoming the fastest promo to cross one million mark in 13 hours and 2 million in 18 hours of its release. And now the two songs ‘Tu Meri’ and ‘Meherbaan’ have also gone viral online.

The high-on-action flick, which is a remake of the Hollywood movie Knight and Day, also features Danny Denzongpa and Jaaved Jaffrey in key roles.

Dil Dhadakne Do is a story about a dysfunctional family starring Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma.

  • ‘Bang Bang’ releases ‘Meherbaan’- its new romantic song

‘Bang Bang’ releases ‘Meherbaan’- its new romantic song

MUMBAI: After the first hit ‘Tu Meri’, Bang Bang is all set to woo the audience by its newly-released romantic track ‘Meherbaan.’

Shot in Greece, the track shows a sizzling chemistry between the Greek God of Bollywood Hrithik Roshan, and Bollywood diva Katrina Kaif.

Penned by Anvita Dutt and composed by Vishal-Shekhar, ‘Meherbaan’ has been sung by Ash King, Shilpa Rao and Shekhar Ravijani.

After the teaser and Tu Meri song went viral, the new romantic number ‘Meherbaan’ has also been trending right on top on Twitter since its release.

Bang Bang is an action-thriller based on the Hollywoog film Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. • Katrina distances herself from Hrithik, to please Ranbir!

Katrina distances herself from Hrithik, to please Ranbir!

MUMBAI: The sizzling on-screen chemistry between Katrina Kaif and Hrithik Roshan in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, will be seen once again in their upcoming flick Bang Bang.

According to reports by zoOm, the reel life bond is because of their growing fondness for each other off-screen. But to avoid any link-up stories, Katrina is maintaining distance from Hrithik Roshan. Seems like, Katrina wants to avoid all the possible rumours that may surface, just like it did earlier during Salman-Katrina-Ranbir love triangle!

Sources claim that during the shoot of Bang Bang, Katrina and Hrithik shared excellent rapport, but before anyone could speak about their ‘friendship’, Katrina suddenly started making attempts to stay away from Hrithik. And it clearly points that this step is to evade possible media news on Ranbir-Katrina break-up!

May be the real reason will never be known, considering Katrina’s repeated denial on her relationship status with Ranbir. So discussing her bond with Hrithik is a far-fetched story!

  • Star Gold’s HD push

    Star Gold’s HD push

MUMBAI: It’s getting high on High definition (HD). We are referring to the Star network’s Hindi  movie channel Star Gold which has strategically, started premiering movies first on Star Gold HD, then following up with a first airing on its standard definition (SD) service.

It’s all in the line of giving its viewers a value add.  Explains Star Gold executive VP Hemal Jhaveri: “We are categorically looking at premiering certain content that we have acquired only on Star Gold HD. It’s a very clear vision we have for keeping the FPCs for both the HD and SD feeds very different from one another. If a viewer is going to pay premium prices he deserves something extra, so we figured why not premiere movies, may be a week or even a month in advance, than our SD feeds. We are clearly focused on strengthening our HD portfolio and it does attract and appeal to premium audiences. ”

Amongst the first films to get this treatment was the Saif Ali Khan starrer Bullett Raja which had its HD premiere on 21 February followed by the SD premier a day later.  Youth centric flick Yaariyan which is to have its SD first run on 21 March at 8 pm premiered on Star Gold HD on 16 March.

And Jhaveri is quite buoyed by the viewer feedback that Yaariyan has generated. Says he:  “We have always focused on offering a mix of varied movie genres to our audiences, with entertaining content. Being a youth centric film, Yaariyan has connected very well with the younger generation and with the music being very popular among the audience we are positive of receiving a good response for the premiere.”

Star India has close to 33 channels in its network. And Jhaveri says it leaves no stone unturned in terms of promoting the big ticket film premieres airing on Star Gold and Star Gold HD on all its channels.  He adds: “We also carry out a 360 degree marketing drive for the movies as well. We treat each movie on its merit, some require heavier push with on-air promotions and some would require a separate campaign. So each movie is treated on its content merit.”

Jhaveri believes the HD premiere tack will work well on the advertising front. Says he: “We are really sure that more and more brands will want to reach out to premiere customers through our HD feed. It’s been great in terms of qualitative feedback and we are confident of building more traction for our HD portfolio.”

Meanwhile, he points out that the network is going easy on handing out fat cheques to buy films this year as the market is overheated.  “We have already made enough acquisitions last year but as far as this year is concerned we are going to be really selective and to a certain extent not really acquire any movie,” discloses Jhaveri. “For the first time you will see a lot of unsold movies in the market, so we are just being very stringent in the content we acquire for this year and will do so only if the need arises. ”

Star Gold has a movie library of 1,100 titles which it shares with its sister channel Movies OK. In 2012, the network had acquired over 500 films from the Viacom 18 group followed by the deal with superstars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn in early 2013 for all their films till 2017.  Additionally, the network signed a deal for other exciting movies for its 2014 movies line up. Some of the high profile premieres slated for the year include: Jai HoKickBombay VelvetBang BangRoyAction JacksonSingham 2HamshakalsBobby Jasoos and Creature.

To its credit is the information tidbit that the network has successfully premiered the maximum number of Rs 100 crore Bollywood films, including blockbusters such as SinghamBodyguardRa.OneHousefull 2Bol BachchanSon of SardaarDabangg 2 and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

The telecast of Yaariyan should help nudge its viewership – which saw a slippage last week -up.   Star Gold SD received 164,983 GVTs in week 10 of TAM ratings against 176,596 GVTs in week 9 (-11,613) even as sister channel Movies OK generated 130,606 GVTs in week 10 against 116,767 GVTs (-13,839).

  • Films to lookout for in 2014

Films to lookout for in 2014

MUMBAI: As the year 2013 comes to a close, we realise that the year was not really disappointing. We had some really great films that not just did good business but also entertained the audiences. As we usher in the year 2014, we look at the ten films that created the right buzz in 2013 and the chances of them making a blockbuster release looks bright.

    Jai Ho
The year is set to start with a blockbuster. Starring Salman Khan, the film that releases on 24 January is going to be high on drama. The actor started promoting the film on Bigg Boss 7 and also cheekily remarked that “it wasn’t the good way to start the promotion”. But we know promotions or no promotions, if the bhai of Bollywood stars in a film, it’s ought to do well!

    Gunday
Starring Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, the film started making noise from the time it was announced. The tongue-in-cheek humour by the two lead actors on the chat show Koffee With Karan has increased the interest around the film even more. A Yash Raj Films venture, the film is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and is set to release on February 14.

    Happy New Year
The film brings back the trio – Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Farah Khan, who together created magic with Om Shaanti Om in 2007. With an interesting cast including actors like Sonu sood, Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani among others, the film is set to release in October, 2014.

    Biopic on Mary Kom
Biopics on sports stars is the new love of the Indian audience, it seems, at least that is what we get from the way Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was embraced. Now, the coming year is set to see another film featuring a sports star – the life of boxer Mary Kom played by Priyanka Chopra. The sportstar has brought many glories to the country. Hope with a film on her, the film industry gains as well.

    Kick
Salman Khan may have missed an Eid release in 2013, but for 2014 Eid, he is all set with Kick. There were a few problems in starting this maiden directorial venture of producer Sajid Nadiadwala, but all’s well when Salman’s the hero and when the film’s releasing during Eid.

    2 States
The film is being jointly produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala and is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, 2 States: The Story Of My Marriage. Starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, the film has created the right buzz even though not much is known about the film.

    PK
So this film brings together the duo of Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani who created magic with 3 Idiots. While the film doing good business is a known fact keeping in mind the past records, the only question is if it will be bigger and better than 3 Idiots. With only few leaked out posters, the film that would release on 6 June has managed to keep the audience’s curiosity intact.

    Bang Bang
With Krissh 3, Hrithik Roshan has already proven his mettle. Though the production of Bang Bang has been delayed because of multiple reasons, the film would make its way in 2014 with the actor focusing entirely on the project. The film also stars leggy lass Katrina Kaif.

    Highway
The cute-looking Alia Bhatt made everyone take notice of her when she starred in Student of the Year. Now, it’s Imtiaz Ali’s Highway for which she is making news. The film, shot in different parts of India, is being looked forward by many.

    Singham 2
The sequel to the 2012 Devgn blockbuster, Singham, has been postponed a bit because Rohit Shetty got busy with his small screen venture as a host for Fear Factor. However, now everything is in place and the duo are set to create the magic that they created with the Golmaal franchise.

  • Katrina ready to sizzle with multiple projects

Katrina ready to sizzle with multiple projects

MUMBAI: She has created waves on-screen every time with her performance. Katrina Kaif, who has been voted the hottest actress four years in a row, is set to rule again with her upcoming release Dhoom 3.

Her last release Jab Tak Hai Jaan was one of the biggest successes of the year. Now, the actress is set to sizzle in Dhoom 3. The title song Dhoom Machale, the teaser of which was released recently, is already trending.

She has temperatures soaring with the song that is glamorously picturised on the actress. Sporting edgy couture be it the neon pink romper, skimming corsets and bustiers and knee high boots, Katrina is looking her best.

That’s not all, the actress also has a string of back to back releases in the coming year, including the action-romance Bang Bang with Hrithik Roshan, Kabir Khan’s gritty drama Phantom with Saif Ali Khan and Fitoor, a timeless love story.

A trade source says, “Katrina Kaif is making conscious decisions when it comes to her films stressing on quality and not quantity. She has created a unique space for her in the industry. Her releases next year too are amongst the most awaited. Her growth has been unprecedented and she has constantly proved with every film that she is here to stay.”
