  • Ek Thi Dayan: A modern take on witch lore

Ek Thi Dayan: A modern take on witch lore

MUMBAI: Superstition about witchcraft is a worldwide phenomenon but beliefs differ from continent to continent. In India, witches are supposed to be found only in deep jungles late at night. Hence, the areas where such jungles exist have more people believing in witches and their sightings. Balaji‘s Ek Thi Dayan binds itself with no such borders and decides to invade a Mumbai mansion. Ek Thi Daayan is about a childhood witch revisiting the protagonist, Emraan Hashmi. It seems like she gets reincarnated every 20 years. After all, why should the privilege of reincarnation be limited only to humans? According to this film, a witch need to be reincarnated too to take her beau back with her no matter how many incarnations it takes!

Producers: Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Vishal Bhardwaj, Rekha Bhardwaj.
    Director: Kannan Iyer.
Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Huma Qureshi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin, Rojotava Dutta, Pawan Malhotra, Bhavesh Balchandani, Visshesh Tiwari, Sara Raj Arjun.

Hashmi is courting Huma Qureshi and both plan to adopt an orphan (Bhavesh Balchandani) even before they are married. They are a rare couple who, without a justification, want to adopt an orphan instead of making their own kids. Later in the film you learn that the witch story is all about sacrificing a child on 29 February every leap year that coincides with lunar eclipse for her to sustain. As a result, the couple had no time to marry and produce a child and needed one off the shelf for the script‘s sake!

Hashmi is a renowned professional magician. While he performs his tricks, Qureshi, for whatever reason, monitors his shows on close circuit. During one of his shows, things go wrong as he hears eerie voices distracting him from his act, almost costing his assistant girl her life. Hashmi feels he is being stalked. His past seems to have caught up with him. He takes the help of the psychiatrist whom he had consulted as a child. Under a spell, Hashmi is made to recall his childhood experience thus taking the story forward in a flashback.

Young Hashmi (played by Visshesh Tiwari) is reading a book on witches and occult and learns that by pressing the button 6 in the lift, 666 being the sign of devil, the lift will take him straight to hell which is supposed to be somewhere underground! He makes a trip with his sister (Sara Raj Arjun) only to have a witch chase him. It would seem that Hashmi is actually from the witch‘s world too and the witch has always loved him and hence has come to take him back.

Instead, having come in the form of Konkona Sen Sharma, she seduces his widowed father, Pawan Malhotra. It is 29 February and an eclipse and the young Hashmi is a worried lad; his book warns about this and there is murder in the air. His fears prove right; the witch manages to kill his sister as well as his father. He survives because he follows his book which says if you cut off a witch‘s hair, she loses all her power. Hashmi grows up to become a magician as predicted by the witch because a lizard had fallen on his head!

Now the witch is back and Hashmi suspects Kalki Koechlin is the one since as she has suddenly come on the scene from Canada and wishes to buy out his haunted house. Hashmi‘s doubts about Koechlin grow stronger when a balcony barricade gives way and his wife, Qureshi, falls four floors to the ground.

It is 29 February and eclipse again and Hashmi realises the only child that the witch can kill this time is his own adopted child, Balchandani. When he does not find him anywhere, he knows the only place the child could be is hell. Since he knows his way around, he enters hell to save the boy. There he is surprised by the real witch but manages to save the child and render the witch ineffective by cutting her hair until a sequel (which a viewer is threatened with at the end) needs her back.

For a supernatural/ horror genre, the film is too long at 134 minutes. The script has similarities to recent films, Aatma and Raaz2, and hence is too predictable. The first half is okay but the director loses grip as the second half goes haywire. Music is weak. The dialogue is uninspiring. As for performance, Sen Sharma is the best of the lot while Qureshi keeps making smiley faces so much she drips syrup. Koechlin is only a red herring and as such has nothing much to do. Child artistes are all good but Sara Raj Arjun is the most natural while Visshesh Tiwari and Bhavesh Balchandani also do very well.

Ek Thi Dayan has had a weak opening despite Ram Navmi holiday in many parts and with negative word of mouth its prospects are poor at the box office.

Balaji signs Siddharth Malhotra as male lead for its action flick ‘The Villain’

MUMBAI: Ekta Kapoor and Mohit Suri have cast ‘Student of the Year‘ actor Siddhath Malhotra as the male lead for their action extravaganza ‘The Villain‘.

Siddharth made his debut with Student of the Year and was noticed by the industry and audiences instantly. He was undoubtedly the hottest debutant of the year.

This fact is underlined by the varied projects he has been offered there-on. Even for ‘The Villain‘ Siddharth was the first choice for the filmmakers. They were looking for a rugged, good looking action star, and Siddharth fit the bill effortlessly.

The film will also have a strong villainous character, one which will be remembered for their evil humor.

Over selecting Siddharth Malhotra for the movie, Balaji Motion Pictures CEO Tanuj Garg said, “We have confirmed Siddharth Malhotra for our film with Mohit Suri. Siddharth has become a hugely popular commodity with the youth after Student of the Year and has the appeal, looks and intensity to carry a commercial action-romantic thriller on his shoulders. He is tomorrow‘s angry young man, and believes that he is the right choice for this film.”

This is the first time Ekta and Mohit Suri will be coming together. The story will have many elements, however action will be precedent. It will be Siddharth‘s first out and out masala film and will portray him in the young angry mode.

Mohit Suri has worked with the Bhatt‘s previously and made blockbuster hits under their banner. However, this film will be marked as his break out film.

The makers are yet on the lookout for a female cast opposite Siddharth. The film will go on floor once Siddharth Malhotra finishes the shooting of Hansi to Phansi where he is casted opposite Parineeti Chopra.

  • Balaji to scale up film biz with Rs 1.5 bn investment

Balaji to scale up film biz with Rs 1.5 bn investment

MUMBAI: For movie production houses, the bet has to be on bigger budgets. Balaji Motion Pictures Limited (BMPL), the film production arm of Balaji Telefilms, is investing Rs 1.5 billion in six movie projects as it attempts to scale up the business after a string of box office successes from small-to-medium budget films.

This marks a significant shift in strategy and signals the company‘s appetite to take bigger risks in a game that is being increasingly dominated by studios who work on a wider slate of productions and releases.

BMPL has lined up a slate of six films for the upcoming year which includes co-production with filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap and Sanjay Gupta, alongside sequels to Balaji’s own successful properties such as Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and Ragini MMS.

The company led by its promoter Ekta Kapoor will release five films in the next fiscal. It had released only one film namely Kya Super Kool Hain Hum in the current fiscal which had net box office collections of approximately Rs 220 million over the first weekend.

Its most recent success at the box office was in the form of biographical drama The Dirty Picture that breached the Rs 1 billion mark. The film that was inspired by the life of Silk Smitha was made on a budget of Rs 180 million.

Similarly, Ragini MMS, built on a meagre budget of Rs 10.3 million, went on to collect Rs 70 million at the box office. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Love Sex Aur Dhokha also had successful runs at the box office.

BMPL had posted a net profit of Rs 35.99 million on revenues of Rs 241.2 million during the second quarter of the current fiscal.

BMPL CEO Tanuj Garg said, “We have put together a strong line-up with a lot of variety. The significant ramp-up in our slate demonstrates the seriousness and passion with which we are growing the movie business. We believe that an equal focus on co-productions and acquired properties is not only a financially prudent approach for us but should also accelerate our growth momentum. We’re pleased to be the only entity with market dominance in television and films alike.”

Garg said that all the movies except Ragini MMS is in advanced stage of productions. However, it is yet to close any satellite rights for its films.

The first to release on 18 April is Ek Thi Daayan, a co-production with Vishal Bhardwaj and directed by debutant Kannan Iyer. The super-natural thriller is top-lined by Emraan Hashmi, Huma Qureshi, Kalki Koechlin and Konkona Sen Sharma, and marks the coming together of Vishal Bhardwaj and Emraan Hashmi for the first time.

Releasing on 1 May is the multi-starrer Shootout at Wadala, a co-production with Sanjay Gupta. The industry’s first prequel (to Shootout At Lokhandwala) stars Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Kangana Ranaut, Tusshar, Manoj Bajpai, Sonu Sood, Ronit Roy, and many other big names, to be announced shortly.

To release on 7 June is Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi, a co-production with Bejoy Nambiar. The quirky Delhi-based comedy launching young talents is directed by noted ad film-maker Aman Sachdeva making his film directorial debut.

On 5 July is Lootera, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane of the critically acclaimed Udaan fame. The epic period love story marks the first-time pairing of Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. Lootera is a co-production with Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikas Bahl of Phantom Films.

The Milan Luthria-directed Once Upon A Time In Mumbai-2 is the banner’s tentpole Eid release scheduled for 8 August. Starring Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Sonali Bendre, the romantic drama is among the most keenly awaited cinematic features of 2013.

Closing the slate for the year, will be the youth date film, Ragini MMS-2, top-lined by Sunny Leone. Directed by Bhushan Patel, the sequel to the biggest sleeper hit of 2011, Ragini MMS, will be a heady combination of thrill, horror and sensuousness. It releases on 11 October.

MUMBAI: Balaji Motion Pictures Limited, the motion pictures arm of Balaji Telefilms, has partnered with critically acclaimed director, producer and screenwriter Bejoy Nambiar to produce a comedy film titled Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi.

Currently underproduction, Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi will be directed by National award winning ad-filmmaker Aman Sachdeva. The film will star Siddharth Gupta and former Miss India Simran Kaur.

Balaji Motion Pictures CEO Tanuj Garg said, "We are delighted to partner a creative talent like Bejoy Nambiar on a film that we believe is clearly among the most hilarious and entertaining scripts we‘ve read."

Talking about the new project, Bejoy said, "The director held a long audition process over several months. We were very clear about wanting a fresh face. Lots of youngsters were auditioned and I went to Balaji with the tapes. It took us around five odd months to lock Siddharth for the role."

"This is our third venture at Getaway Films and the first one that I am not directing. Aman (Sachdeva) makes his directorial feature debut and we couldn‘t have asked for a better alliance than one with Balaji on our pet project," he adds.

Balaji prepones release date of Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum to 27 July

MUMBAI: Balaji Motion Pictures has preponed the release date of its Riteish Deshmukh and Tusshar Kapoor-starrer, Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum. The film, originally scheduled to release on August 3, will now hit the screens on 27 July.

Said Balaji Motion Pictures CEO Tanuj Garg, “Kyaa Super Kool is a keenly awaited comedy and we‘re glad to pre-pone its release for everyone who‘s been waiting for it. It makes business sense to have a clean weekend with no other film in the interest of maximizing business.”

Though Balaji announced that Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum would release on 2 August a couple of months ago, Vishesh Films, the makers of Jism 2, decided to come out on the same date. Following a rational discussion between the two camps, Jism 2 was preponed to 27 July as both sides agreed that both films being keenly awaited sequels, should not eat into each other‘s business by releasing on the same day.

Surprisingly, days after the Bhatts’ decision, director Pooja Bhatt went ahead and announced that her film would release on 3 August, as per the original plan. Not wanting an unnecessary clash, Balaji preponed the film’s release to 27 July.

  • Star to form JV with Balaji for Telugu channel

Star to form JV with Balaji for Telugu channel

MUMBAI: Television content production house Balaji Telefilms Ltd. will get into broadcasting through a joint venture with Star Group. The two companies will be launching a Telugu channel with Star as a majority partner.

“We will be partnering with Balaji for the Telugu channel. We will have majority stake in the joint venture,” Star India advertising, sales and distribution president Paritosh Joshi tells Indiantelevision.com.

For the Bengali general entertainment channel, Star will continue its joint venture arrangement with the Ananda Bazar Group (ABP) but the corporate structure has not been frozen yet. In Media Content & Communications Services India Pvt. Ltd (MCCS), the company which owns and operates Bengali news channel Star Ananda, Star has a 26 per cent stake while ABP holds the balance 74 per cent.

A separate joint venture for the Bengali general entertainment channel is being considered. Star has the flexibility of holding a higher stake in the JV while in news uplinking regulation restricts it to have a maximum 26 per cent stake.

“The shareholders have been under discussion but nothing has been finalised as yet regarding the corporate structure for the Bengali general entertainment channel,” says Joshi.

A two-hour entertainment band in the afternoons on Star Ananda is likely to be introduced in June. “The process has got slightly delayed but we are aiming to come up with the two-hour band in June. We will monitor its success and a full fledged Bengali entertainment channel could come up towards the end of the calendar year,” says Joshi.

The Telugu channel is expected to be launched in August-September. “We have started work on the content strategy and are in the process of formalising the joint venture for the Telugu channel,” says Joshi.

Balaji has the option of partnering with Star in the southern-language channels. This formed part of the agreement when Star acquired a stake in Balaji Telefilms. But it excludes Vijay TV as Star bought out UTV’s stake in the Tamil channel before the deal with Balaji was struck.

Balaji has had to weigh several factors like its existing business with Sun TV Ltd. where it gets healthy revenues. In the last two quarters ended 31 December 2006, Balaji had revenues of Rs 158 million from the Sun network channels.

NEW DELHI: Only a handful of media companies like Zee Telefilms, Deccan Chronicle and Television Eighteen Ltd find a place in a survey of top 500 Indian companies conducted by Economic Times newspaper.

With a market cap of Rs. 9.3 billion in June 2006, Zee Telefilms has been ranked 142nd in ET500 in August 2006, up from an earlier survey in February when it had been placed at 281st position.

Incidentally, Zee tops the media heap amongst the best in India where the top two slots are occupied by infotech companies, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys Technologies.

Regional media powerhouse, Deccan Chronicle Holdings, finds a place at No. 167 with a market capitalization of Rs. 1.4 billion.

Television Eighteen, owners of TV channels like CNBC TV18 and CNN IBN, has slipped to No. 330 in ranking in August from an earlier position of 318.

According to ET500, TV18’s market cap in June stood at slightly over Rs. 1 billion.
