    Sun TV’s unassailable lead continues, while Zee TV leads Hindi across genre

    BENGALURU: The Sun network’s flagship Tamil general entertainment channel (GEC) Sun TV continued its lead in ratings across all GECs on Indian television for week 48 of 2017 (25 November to 1 December 2017) according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) weekly ratings data. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) network flagship Hindi GEC Zee TV also continued its lead of Hindi GECs with the support of Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms produced family dramas Kumkum Bhagya and Kundali Bhagya.

    BARC data for the top 10 channels across genre (All India Individuals 2+) for week 48 had three channels from the Star India network, two channels each from Zeel, Sony Pictures Network India (SPN), Network 18 and one channel from Sun TV network in its list. From the genres perspective, six Hindi GECs, two Telugu GECs and one each channel from the Tamil GEC and Hindi Movies spaces comprised the top 10 channels list for week 48 of 2017.

    Sun TV retained its numero uno with 1019.892 million weekly impressions. The channel’s ratings were ably supported by the fact that all the five top Tamil programmes during primetime for the week were as usual from Sun TV. It is only during the Indian Premier League that the channel had to make way for the channel that airs the cricketing bonanza, but it continues leading all GECs.

    Zee TV was ranked second with 723.935 million weekly impressions followed by Network 18’s flagship Hindi GEC Colors at third rank with 681.010 million weekly impressions. Tu Aashiqui that was aired on the latter was among the top five Hindi GEC programmes in the HSM urban (U) + Rural (R) and the HSM (U) markets during primetime. Another soap on the channel, Udaan, was also among the top five programmes list in the HSM (U) market during primetime.

    Star India’s recently renamed and relaunched FTA Hindi GEC Star Bharat was ranked fourth with 665.612 million weekly impressions. Kya Haal Mr. Paanchal continued its run in the top five programmes on Hindi GEC HSM (U+R) and HSM (R) markets. Zeel’s FTA Hindi GEC Zee Anmol was ranked fifth with 614.632 million weekly impressions.

    SPN’s women focused Hindi GEC Sony Pal ranked sixth in the top 10 channels across genres list with 600.202 million weekly impressions. Balveer in the Hindi GEC HSM (U+R) and HSM (R) and Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma in the HSM (R) markets were among the five most watched Hindi GEC programmes during primetime.

    SPN’s Hindi Movies channel Sony Max at seventh place with 563.980 million weekly impressions. Hindi feature films PK, Dangerous Khiladi 6 and Poster Boys aired on Sony Max were in the top five lists of programmes list in the HSM (U) market. Star India’s flagship Telugu GEC Star Maa was ranked eighth in the list with 515.303 million weekly impressions. Two programmes on Star Maa– Karthika Deepam and Kumkum Puvvu were in the top five Telugu programmes list during the week under review.

    The Network 18 associated Telugu GEC ETV Telugu was ranked ninth with 505.527 million weekly impressions. Swati Chinukulu and Manasu Mamata featured on ETV Telugu were among the top five Telugu programmes in the AP/ Telangana (U+R) areas (NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs) : 2+ Individuals). The Star Networks flagship Hindi GEC Star Plus was ranked tenth in week 48 of 2017 with 503.505 million impressions.

    BENGALURU: Ektaa Kapoor-led Balaji Telefilms Limited (Balaji Telefilms) reported improved consolidated revenue for the quarter ended 30 September 2017 (Q2 2017-18) as compared with the corresponding quarter a year ago (y-o-y). Revenue from Balaji Telefilms’ recently launched OTT business, ALTBalaji, grew by 53 per cent to Rs 12.33 million in Q2 2017-18 from Rs 8.05 million in the trailing quarter. ALTBalaji was launched on 16 April 2017.

    Balaji Telefilms’ total income increased by 6.3 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1,165.71 million from Rs 1,096.6 million. Operating revenue grew by 3.7 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1,097.82 million from Rs 1,059.08 million mainly on higher realisation per hour from its television business or commissioned programmes. While the company reported the same number of commissioned programming hours–240 hours for the current quarter as compared with Q2 2016-17–the realisation per hour in the current quarter was Rs 3.2 million as against Rs 2.6 million in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Its other business besides ALTBalaji, the movies business, reported a decline of 28.8 per cent y-o-y in revenue in the current quarter to Rs 307.55 million from Rs 431.87 million as no films were released during the quarter.

    The commissioned programmes business had operating profit of Rs 103.55 million in the current quarter as compared with Rs 79.15 million in Q2 2016-17. The films business reported operating profit of Rs 60.20 million as against operating loss of Rs 259.98 million in the comparative quarter last year. ALTBalaji incurred operating loss of Rs 202.86 million as compared with operating loss of Rs 43.49 million in the trailing quarter.

    Balaji Telefilms reported consolidated loss of Rs 138.4 million in Q2 2017-18 as compared with loss of Rs 279.92 million in Q2 2016-17.

    Balaji Telefilms’ total expenditure for Q2 2017-18 reduced by 7.2 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1,251.88 million from Rs 1,349.7 million. Cost of production/acquisition and telecast fees in the current quarter increased by 23.6 per cent y-o-y to Rs 971.08 million from Rs 785.45 million. Employee benefits expense during the quarter increased by 23.7 per cent y-o-y to Rs 84.21 million from Rs 68.06 million. Marketing and distribution expenses in the current quarter reduced by 60.3 per cent y-o-y to Rs 77.65 million from Rs 195.47 million. Other expenses rose by 52.4 per cent to Rs 143.54 million from Rs 94.16 million.

  • Reliance Industries buys Balaji Telefilms stake for Rs 4.13 bn

    MUMBAI: The Board of Directors of Balaji Telefilms Limited, in its meeting held on Thursday, considered and approved an investment by Reliance Industries Limited, one of India’s leading corporates, through a preferential issue of 25.2 million equity shares at Rs 164 each, aggregating to Rs 4.13 billion, subject to necessary shareholder and other approvals. Axis Capital Limited acted as the sole investment banker for this transaction.

    Balaji is India’s leading entertainment content producer operating across television, movie and digital platforms. The company recently launched ALTBalaji, a multi-device subscription video on demand platform, which offers original, premium and exclusive content for a global digital audience and in a short span, post its launch, has garnered over four million downloads across 80 countries.

    This transaction marks a landmark event for the Indian OTT industry and is expected to further accelerate the growing trend of media consumption ‘on-the-go’. The proceeds from the transaction would be utilized to further speed up content development initiatives, especially for ALT, thereby providing it with a strong ability to compete with other OTT service providers- both global and Indian.

    Earlier, Jio and Zee Entertainment reportedly denied reports of being offered to buy a stake in ALTBalaji. Balaji was planning to sell up to 26 per cent stake in its subsidiary ALTBalaji Digital and reportedly in talks with the media companies. Launched in mid-April ALTBalaji has 250 plus hours of programming.

    BENGALURU: The Ekta Kapoor led Balaji Telefilms Limited (BTL) has announced Axis Capital as the banker for investments into its digital business ALTBalaji thru BTL’s wholly owned subsidiary ALT Digital Media Entertainment Limited.

    A BTL release filed with the bourses says: ‘In recognition of the continued robust prospects of Balaji Telefilms Limited (BTL) market’s leading television content production business and the strong response and growth potential its newly launched digital OTT platform (ALTBalaji), the Management of BTL has decided to concentrate a significant portion of its bandwidth and the Company’s available resources on these high potential business segments.’

    The release claims further that: ‘Several financial and strategic investors have expressed strong interest to partner with ALTBalaji and the Management is actively considering the options available and has appointed Axis Capital as bankers for the Investments.’

    BTL claims that ALT Digital Media Entertainment Limited with its stand out original content, has received great response with 2.4 million downloads. making BTL one of the first movers in the fast growing OTT market in India. Given the disruptive nature of the emerging OTT opportunity, ALTBalaji will be a game changer for BTL.

    BENGALURU: Despite almost doubling of year-over-year consolidated revenue for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter), Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms Limited (Balaji) reported a consolidated loss of Rs 28 crore, as compared to Profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 3.92 crore for the corresponding year ago quarter. The company attributes higher revenue to four films it released in the half year ended 30 September 2016 (H!-17, current half-year) as compared to no releases in H1-16. Balaji says in its investor presentation that piracy of its movies Great Grand Masti and Udta Punjab led to an approximate loss of Rs 36 crore in revenues, severely impacting its profitability in the period.

    The company reported 1.92 times higher revenue (TIO) in the current quarter at Rs 105.91 crore as compared to Rs 55.08 crore in Q2-16, and comparatively, just a little lower than the Rs 117.38 crore in the immediate trailing quarter Q1-17.

    Consolidated operating loss (negative EBIDTA) in Q2-17 was Rs 26.18 crore as compared to an operating profit (positive EBIDTA) in Q2-16 of Rs 6.33 crore.

    On a standalone basis, Balaji Telefilms Limited (BTL) – the television arm reported lower a net profit of Rs 4.4 crore in the current quarter versus Rs 6.6 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. Standalone revenues for Q2-17 and Q2-16 were Rs 61.2 crore and Rs 53.2 crore respectively.

    Revenue from BTL’s Commissioned Programs segment in Q2-17 was Rs 60.9 crore, while for Q2-16 it was Rs 48.3 crore. Programming hours for Q2-17 were 231 hours, significantly higher than the 199 hours reported for the corresponding year ago quarter. Net realisation per hour in Q2-17 was higher at Rs 26.3 lakh as compared to Rs 24.2 lakh in Q2-16. Gross margin and gross margin per hour were lower at Rs 14.7 crore and Rs 6.4 lakh in Q2-17 as compared to Rs 16.9 crore and Rs 8.5 lakh in Q2-16 respectively.

    Balaji says that increase in programming hours in this quarter was due to certain special episodes being commissioned during the quarter for its daily soaps; realisation per hour has improved due to better episodic fees; Gross margins have improved this quarter and will continue to improve once the newer shows stabilise. Shows launched post Q2-17 were Naagin 2 on Colors, Chandra Nandni and Pardes Mein Hai Meraa Dill on Star Plus.

    Revenue from Balaji’s digital business – ALT- was Nil as the company is getting ready to launch commercial services in early Q4 FY17. Other Income from ALT was Rs 3.3 crore in the current quarter as compared to Nil in Q2-16.

    Revenue from Balaj’s movie business for Q2-17 was Rs 43.2 crore against Rs 1.6 crore in Q2-16. The movie business had an operating loss of Rs 28 crore in the current quarter. Operating loss in the corresponding year ago quarter was Rs 4.2 crore. Total amount invested as of 30 September 2016 in movies that are under production was Rs 44.1 crore says the company.

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter almost tripled (by 2.94 times) y-o-y at Rs 134.96 crore (127.4 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 45.85 crore (83.2 percent of TIO) in Q2-16. Cost of Production/Acquisition and Telecast Fees in Q2-17 was Rs 78.55 crore (74.2 percent of TIO), 2.1 percent lower than Rs 80.22 crore (145.6 percent of TIO) in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Marketing and distribution expense in Q2-17 increased to Rs 19.55 crore as compared to Rs 0.16 crore in Q2-16. Employee Benefit Expense in the current quarter increased 36/9 percent y-o-y to Rs 6.81 crore (6/4 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 4.97 crore (9 percent of TIO) in Q2-16. Other expenditure in Q2-17 increased 33.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 9.42 crore as compared to Rs 7/04 crore.

    BENGALURU: Balaji Telefilms Limited (Balaji) reported 23 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) decline in standalone total revenue from operations (TIO) for the quarter ended 30 June 2016 (Q1-17, current quarter). The company reported standalone revenue for Q1-17 at Rs 53.59 crore and Rs 69.38 crore for the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Revenue from Balajis’ Commissioned Programs segment in Q1-17 was Rs 52.64 crore, while for Q1-16 it was Rs 68.44 crore. Programming hours for Q1-17 were 225.5 hours, lower than the 257 hours reported for the corresponding year ago quarter. Net realisation per hour was also lower at Rs 23.33 lakh in the current quarter as compared to Rs 26.6 lakh in Q1-16. The company says that the previous quarter included Nach Baliye and Jodha Akbar resulting in higher revenue as compared to the current quarter. The company says that Q2-17 will have two new shows Mazaak Mazaak Mein on Life Ok and Bhramarakshas on Zee TV. Margin was lower in the current quarter due to launch of a new show Kawach on June 11, 2016 which will improve in the subsequent quarters

    The company’s Films segment reported operating revenue of Rs 53.44 crore in Q1-17 as compared to Rs 1.04 crore in Q1-16. The segment’s operating profit in the current quarter was Rs 2.53 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 0.45 crore. The company says that revenue growth in the current quarter is due to release of Azhar and Udta Punjab. The company expects revenue of approximately Rs 18.61 crore for satellite, digital and other rights of Azhar and Udta Punjab in Q2-17. It says further that piracy of two of its movies led to a lower profit on Udta Punjab and loss on Great Grand Masti (released in July 2016) resulting into an approximate loss of revenue of Rs 36 crore.

    Balaji’s consolidated TIO increased 54.9 percent y-o-y to Rs 117.38 crore in Q1-17 as compared to Rs 75.80 crore in Q1-16. The company reported negative consolidated EBIDTA of Rs 3.01 crore for the current quarter as compared to a consolidated operating profit of Rs 4.76 crore in Q1-16.

    Total comprehensive income in the current quarter was lower at Rs 0.66 crore as compared to a comprehensive income of Rs 4.28 crore in Q1-16.Balaji reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 0.2 crore in the current quarter as compared to a profit after tax of Rs 4.4 crore in Q1-16. The company says that net loss has been incurred in the current quarter after accounting for income tax of Rs 2.72 crore which relates to its television segment.

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter was Rs 120.35 crore (102.5 percent of TIO) which was 64.5 percent more as compared to Rs 73.16 crore (96.5 percent of TIO) in Q1-16. Cost of Production/Acquisition and Telecast Fees in Q1-17 was Rs 83.92 crore (71.5 percent of TIO), 5.7 percent lower than Rs 89 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Marketing and distribution expense in Q1-17 increased to Rs 13.26 crore as compared to Rs 0.30 crore in Q1-16. Employee Benefit Expense in the current quarter increased 54.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 6.46 crore (5.5 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 4.19 crore (5.5 percent of TIO) in Q1-16. Other expenditure in Q1-17 increased 17.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 7.82 crore (6.7 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 6.67 crore (8.8 percent of TIO).

    Balaji says that it has so far invested Rs14.3 crore in its digital foray ALT Digital, which is currently in a prelaunch phase with expenses mainly on account of content, technology, salaries and other business overheads.

It says further that piracy of two of its movies led to a lower profit on Udta Punjab and loss on Great Grand Masti (released in July 2016) resulting into an approximate loss of revenue of Rs 36 crore.

    Balaji’s consolidated TIO increased 54.9 percent y-o-y to Rs 117.38 crore in Q1-17 as compared to Rs 75.80 crore in Q1-16. The company reported negative consolidated EBIDTA of Rs 3.01 crore for the current quarter as compared to a consolidated operating profit of Rs 4.76 crore in Q1-16.

    Total comprehensive income in the current quarter was lower at Rs 0.66 crore as compared to a comprehensive income of Rs 4.28 crore in Q1-16.Balaji reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 0.2 crore in the current quarter as compared to a profit after tax of Rs 4.4 crore in Q1-16. The company says that net loss has been incurred in the current quarter after accounting for income tax of Rs 2.72 crore which relates to its television segment.

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter was Rs 120.35 crore (102.5 percent of TIO) which was 64.5 percent more as compared to Rs 73.16 crore (96.5 percent of TIO) in Q1-16. Cost of Production/Acquisition and Telecast Fees in Q1-17 was Rs 83.92 crore (71.5 percent of TIO), 5.7 percent lower than Rs 89 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Marketing and distribution expense in Q1-17 increased to Rs 13.26 crore as compared to Rs 0.30 crore in Q1-16. Employee Benefit Expense in the current quarter increased 54.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 6.46 crore (5.5 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 4.19 crore (5.5 percent of TIO) in Q1-16. Other expenditure in Q1-17 increased 17.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 7.82 crore (6.7 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 6.67 crore (8.8 percent of TIO).

    Balaji says that it has so far invested Rs14.3 crore in its digital foray ALT Digital, which is currently in a prelaunch phase with expenses mainly on account of content, technology, salaries and other business overheads.

    BENGALURU: Balaji Telefilms Limited reported eight per cent YoY growth in total income from operations (TIO) at Rs 78.65 for the quarter ended 31 December, 2015 (Q3-2016, current quarter) as compared to Rs 71.54 crore and 43.8 per cent QoQ jump from Rs 52.85 crore.

    Commissioned programs in the current quarter increased 24.4 per cent YoY to 712.2 hours as compared to 572.7 hours and increased 47.6 per cent as compared to 482.6 hours in the immediate trailing quarter. Net realisation per hour of commissioned programs increased 17.5 per cent YoY to Rs 24.2 lakh as compared to Rs 20.6 lakh, and was almost flat QoQ as compared to Rs 24.3 lakh.

    The company’s revenue from commissioned programs segment in Q3-2016 increased 16.2 per cent YoY to Rs 72.01 crore as compared to Rs 61.97 crore and rose 40.7 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 51.18. The segment’s operating profit in the current quarter more than doubled (by 2.5 times) YoY to Rs 18.94 crore and increased 45.7 per cent QoQ to Rs 13 crore.

    Balaji’s other segment – Films, reported revenue of just Rs 1.12 crore in the current quarter as compared to Rs 0.13 crore in Q3-2015 and Rs 1.64 in the immediate trailing quarter. The Films’ segment reported operating loss of Rs 1.91 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating loss of Rs 2.83 crore in Q3-2015 and an operating profit of Rs 0.06 crore in Q2-2016.

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter declined 16.1 per cent YoY to Rs 68.68 crore as compared to Rs 81.81 crore, but increased 49.8 per cent as compared to Rs 45.85 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    The company’s cost of production/acquisition and telecast fees increased 5.7 per cent YoY to Rs 68.04 crore as compared to Rs 64.39 crore, but declined 15.3 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 80.22 crore.

    Staff cost increased 16.9 per cent YoY to Rs 4.89 crore as compared to Rs 4.19 crore but reduced 1.2 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 4.95.

    Balaji Telefilms standalone numbers

    Balaji Telefilms’ YoY standalone profit after tax (PAT) catapulted more than six-fold at Rs 20.66 crore (28.7 per cent margin) as compared to Rs 3.09 crore (5.4 per cent margin) and was double QoQ as compared to Rs 10.31 crore (20.2 per cent standalone margin) in the immediate trailing quarter. 
    The company reported 26 per cent YoY increase in standalone total income from operations (TIO) in the current quarter to Rs 72.3 crore from Rs 57.27 crore and 41 per cent jump from Rs 51.11 crore in Q2-2016.

    Standalone EBIDTA more than quadrupled (by 4.24 times) YoY in Q3-2016 at Rs 18.05 crore as compared to Rs 4.25 crore and almost doubled (up 94 per cent) as compared to Rs 9.32 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.
