‘Masaan’ ticket sales sees spurt with word of mouth publicity

MUMBAI: As has been seen with strong content films, a huge word of mouth buzz pushed Masaan ticket sales to double up by Saturday, 25 July afternoon in all the metros.

The superlative reviews of the film have piqued the interest of cine-goers, which has in turn translated into box office sales.

In spite of facing huge competition from big blockbusters like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Bahubali, and less number of shows, the film has managed to stand on its own and was playing house full by Saturday noon at most screens in the metros. The small towns though still are warming up to this film, but the producers feel that the Masaan promotions in the small towns will also pay and sales will be stable throughout the week.

The film, which has opened in around 250 screens in the country, is looking stable to go in the second week with more shows.

Drishyam Films’ Manish Mundra said, “Excellent reviews coupled with very strong word of mouth has resulted in full house in all most all major multiplexes in urban centers on Saturday. We are confident that Masaan will sustain in theatres for good number of weeks making it also a success at the box office along with being critical acclaimed.”

Phantom Films’ Vikramaditya Motwane added, “The strong word of mouth and the super reviews have added to the buzz around the film, and the ticket sales have gone up by almost double on Sat. This reinstates our belief in good content and we hope the audience will keep spreading the appreciation and we will have a good weekday tickets’ sales too.”

  • Box office: ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 100 crore in opening weekend

Box office: ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 100 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: A Salman Khan film and the festival of Eid make a sort of grand combination at the box office. And Bajrangi Bhaijaan, the latest Khan starrer, continues the tradition.

However, what is different this time is that this is no usual superhuman action film, which are dished out by Khan’s filmmakers for some years now.

The film has just two brief action scenes, tackles a risky subject releasing it at a time when the film could have easily disappointed his fans who usually love to watch him go berserk with his muscles and fists.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan counts on emotional appeal, balances two faiths tactfully and emotions of two countries, India and Pakistan.

The film, despite its release a day before Eid, matched the collections of other Khan hits to record opening day figures of Rs 27.2 crore and, as expected, took a big leap on Saturday (Eid day) and Sunday Rs 38.5 to end its opening weekend with a whopping Rs 102.2 crore.

Baahubali: The Beginning (Hindi-Dubbed) maintained very well through its first weekend. After an opening weekend of Rs 20.15 crore, it more than matched up to its weekend figures with first week collections of Rs 41.55 crore. The film had fewer screens in its second week due to the extensive release of Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

I Love NY opened to poor collections and stayed that way through its first week run.

Guddu Rangeela added a meagre Rs 65 lakh in second week to take its two week total to Rs 8.4 crore.

Second Hand Husband collected Rs 35 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 2.95 crore.

ABCD 2 added another Rs 1.70 crore in its fourth week to take its four week total to Rs 104.95 crore.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is still holding fort at the box office. The movie collected Rs 40 lakh in its eighth week taking its eight week total to Rs 142.95 crore.

  • ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’: Sober Salman, excellent Nawazuddin steal the show

‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’: Sober Salman, excellent Nawazuddin steal the show

MUMBAI: Salman Khan turns producer with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and, at the same time, ventures into a different genre away from his usual action films. Salman has been doing action films on a regular basis since Wanted and it has generally worked for him. But, now, especially with a bunch of new generation actors, all with chiselled muscular bodies doing the same, it’s probably time for Salman to take a much needed detour. After all, how much can one differ in every action film? Instead of countering the law of diminishing returns, this film is meant to touch hearts.

Salman is a diehard Lord Hanuman devotee, is clean hearted and swears by Hanumanji that he would never do anything wrong or illegal and would never lie. So much so that people call him Bajrangi, a name he loves. Following the myth, he even bows every time he sees a monkey. His introduction scene comes through a group dance he is performing in the praise of Hanumanji at a local temple in his native town.As he sits down for a glass of water, he sees a six year old girl. Salman offers her water and she gulps it down to the last drop. Realising she could be hungry as well, he orders a paratha for her but she signals for two.

The doll-like girl, Harshaali Malhotra, is speech impaired and,at an elder’s suggestion, is on a visit to the dargah of Nizamuddin Chishti in Delhi from her native town in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Her mother is told that whatever one wishes for at the dargah comes true. Having paid their visit to the dargah, mother and daughter are on their way back to Pakistan on the Samjhauta Express. The train is still on Indian territory and has taken a long halt because of a technical problem. While all others are sleeping, Harshaali spots a lamb near the train, the kind she loved to play with in her native village. She can’t resist the urge to go cuddle it and gets down from the train.

While Harshaali is playing with the lamb, the train starts moving, leaving her behind. Distraught, the girl sees a goods train come to a stop there. She boards it and ends up in Salman’s town. After being fed parathas, she tags on to Salman not willing to leave him. Salman tries various ways to pass the responsibility but fails. He has to return to Delhi where he has shifted after his father passed away and where he lives with his father’s friend, Sharat Saxena. He has no alternative but to take her to Delhi with him.

Sharat has a pretty daughter, Kareena Kapoor. Soon, Kareena falls for Salman’s simple ways. This romance, subtle though, and gradually finding out about where Harshaali hails from takes almost all of first half of the film. It is slow, feels like it is not going anywhere and makes one restless. Since Harshaali can’t speak, Salman reels off names of all the towns in the vicinity. After all, kids get lost in crowded places like a fair or a pilgrimage. Harshaali can’t relate with any city from the names.

Salman, himself a guest in Sharat’s house, is under pressure to find Harshaali’s folks. Salman convinces him that she sould be a Brahmin like both of them looking at how fair she is. When he watches her craving for non-veg food, he assumes she is a Kshatriya. It is during an India-Pakistan one day match the family is watching on TV that they realise Harshalli is from Pakistan.

Failing to find a way to send her to Pakistan on her own, through the embassy or through an agent, he decides to take her home on his own. That is when the film takes a direction and has some better moments. Nawazuddin Siddqui’s entry soon after adds some distraction and interest in the proceedings. A small-time stringer trying to sell his footage to TV channels, almost always unsuccessfully, he picks up the story that a spy, Salman, has crossed over illegally into Pakistan. He shoots Salman as he is escaping from a police station. He also starts following him and listens to Salman’s story as he narrates it to the co-travellers on the bus.

Nawazuddin has had a change of heart realising that Salman is not a spy and has entered the country with noble intentions. He now becomes Salman’s escort helping him along as the police is hot on their trail. When no news channels is willing to accept Nawazuddin’s footage or version of the story, he finally takes recourse to the net, splashing the true story with videos online.

India and Pakistan are uneven enemies but both share similar sentiments and the writer and director use it to come up with an emotional climax. Nawazuddin’s posts on the net spread Salman’s message: ‘Being Human’ giving the film its best moments.

Direction is apt living up to standard set by Kabir Khan with his last couple of films; climax wins the battle for him. The music is not much to hum about. Editing needed to be crisper. Dialogue is claptrap atplaces. Cinematography is good.

Salman Khan brings to the fore his sober side and convinces the viewers with his portrayal of a simple, honest man. Kareena Kapoor does not have a meaty role, yet manages to make her presence felt. Nawazuddin excels. The central character, Harshaali is the casting coup and she manages to deliver as expected. The supporting cast is okay.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan appeals mainly to the gentry and a Salman film being inevitable for masses, also to single screen audience. Releasing worldwide on the Eid weekend with an open two week run, there is no stopping this film at the box office.

Producers: Salman Khan, Kabir Khan, Sunil Lulla

    Director: Kabir Khan

Cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor,Harshaali Malhotra, Nawazuddin Sidiqui, Sharat Saxena, Om Puri (guest artiste), Adnan Sami (cameo)

Marketing coup: SRK, Aamir unveil Salman’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ poster on Twitter

MUMBAI: In a marketing and promotional coup of sorts, Salman Khan managed to pull off an unparalleled feat. The ‘Being Human’ star has managed to get his contemporaries Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan to tweet the first look of his upcoming film Bajrangi Bhaijaan to their followers on Twitter.

“I believe Being a brother is bigger than being a Hero. ‘Bhaijaan’ coming Eid 2015. How do u like the first look?” tweeted Shah Rukh Khan, the once arch nemesis of Salman.

A few minutes later, Aamir Khan also took to the popular micro-blogging site Twitter to post the poster of Salman’s film with the caption ‘Coming soon…”

While SRK has 13.2 million followers on Twitter, Aamir is close behind with 12.8 million followers. On the other hand, amongst the trio, Salman lags slightly behind with 12 million followers on Twitter. Between them, the Khan trinity has the capability to reach out to a fan base of a whopping 38 million followers. No doubt, this is a sure shot recipe for unmatched ‘low cost – maximum impact’ publicity. Now that’s called marketing!

  • Salman Khan jailed for 5 years in hit-and-run case, gets two days’ interim bail

Salman Khan jailed for 5 years in hit-and-run case, gets two days’ interim bail

NEW DELHI: Actor Salman Khan was today convicted by a Mumbai Sessions court for five years for killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run case.

The 49-year old actor who had been charged with culpable homicide was directed to be taken to jail today itself.

However, the Bombay High Court granted him interim bail for two days after his case was argued by senior counsel Harish Salve, who said no person could be jailed on the basis of a partial order. He said his client had only been read out the operative portion.

The dead man, 38-year-old Noor Ullah Khan, was among five people who were run over in the incident. Late on the night of 28 September 2002, Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser hit the American Express Bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai.

Khan had sought to say his driver was behind the wheel, but Judge DW Deshpande said the actor was driving the car and was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

“You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol,” he told the actor as soon as the court proceedings began.

Khan has been booked under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (rash and negligent driving); 279 (rash driving); 337 (causing minor injuries); 338 (causing major injuries) 427 (negligence), and under Motor Vehicle Act Sections 34 (a), (b) read with 181 (driving vehicle in contravention of rules); 185 (driving at great speed after consuming alcohol).

The arguments by lawyers on his sentence went on for about three years, during which time who was dressed in a white shirt remained calm and composed. His family and friends inside the court were hoping that he would get a jail term of three years or less.

But Khan broke down when the judge pronounced his sentence and he was visibly upset when his sisters tried to comfort him.

One of Bollywood’s busiest stars having appeared in more than 80 Hindi-language films, Khan’s jail sentence is bound to affect the film projects he was working in.

The prosecution alleged that Khan had been driving the car while drunk, both of which charges the actor denied in court in March. But many witnesses disagreed.

A constable attached to Khan’s security detail said in a statement to the police that the “drunk” actor had lost control of the car. The policeman died in 2007 of tuberculosis.

In April, Khan’s driver told the court that he had crashed the car after a tyre burst but the court did not accept that version.

Khan had been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in October 2001 and arrested but granted bail. In May 2003, the Court rejected his plea to drop culpable homicide charge and but in June 2003 the Bombay High Court dropped culpable homicide charge but said he be tried for rash and negligent driving.

Khan will also be taken for a medical examination before being sent to jail. His lawyers had told the court today that he had heart and neurological problems. The judge had remained unmoved.

Khan is the second actor to have gone to jail recently, the earlier being Sanjay Dutt.

In addition to his acting career, Khan is a stage performer and an active humanitarian through his charity organisation Being Human.

The actor has two film releases lined up for this year namely Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo.

Apart from films, the actor also hosts the television reality show Bigg Boss on Colors.

  • Nawazuddin Siddique to shoot for two Khans back to back

Nawazuddin Siddique to shoot for two Khans back to back

MUMBAI: Nawazuddin Siddique is certainly on a career high. Not only has he defied all the norms with the incredible roles that he has earned for himself in several movies this past year, he has also earned the repute of being perhaps the most promising unconventional leading hero in today’s time.

His recent release, Badlapur has earned him some of the best reviews of his career with reports of audience bursting into applause each time he enters the screen with his quirky punch lines. Though the actor has too little time to relish this success, he will now be seen sharing screen space back to back with Bollywood’s biggest Khans. Starting off with Bajrangi Bhaijaan starring Salman Khan, Siddique will simultaneously rehearse for his role in Rais with Shah Rukh Khan.

This is interesting as both the Khans are always pitted against each other and this time Siddique seems to be the common factor between the two. Co-incidentally both the films will be shot back to back and will have their schedules interspersed with Siddique being a part of both the films.

He will start off the rehearsals for Rais in March while he continues to shoot for Bajrangi Bhaijaan around the same time.

  • Salman’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ gets hate mails

Salman’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ gets hate mails

MUMBAI: Films being targeted by religious extremists is nothing new. After ‘PK’, it’s the turn of yet-to-be released Salman Khan’s film ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.

The film which is slated to release on Eid 2015 has already angered a certain section of the society. And apparently, the star as well as the director of the film, Kabir Khan, have received hate mails from many religious extremists stating that they will boycott the film because it propagates “Love Jihad”.

The director refuses to surrender and has decided not to make any changes to the film which traces the love story of a Muslim guy and a Hindu girl or its name.
