    Star India channels push their way up ranks in across genres

    BENGALURU: Four India channels pushed their way up in tandem at ranks three, four, five and six in Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly list of Top 10 Channels Across Genres in week 39 of 2018 (Saturday, 22 September 2018 to Friday, 28 September 2018). Of the four Star India channels in the across genres list, three were Hindi GECs of which two were free to air (FTA) and one was a Telugu GEC. At its usual first rank was the Sun TV Network’s flagship Tamil GEC Sun TV followed by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) free to air (FTA) Hindi GEC Zee Anmol at second rank.

    Seven Hindi GECs, and one channel each from the Hindi movies, Tamil GEC and Telugu GEC made it to BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres in week 39 of 2018. From the networks’ perspective, there were four channels from Star India, two channels each from Sony Pictures Network India and Zeel and one channel each from The Sun TV Network and Viacom 18.

    As mentioned above, at its normal first rank in week 39 was the Tamil GEC Sun TV with 1,020.107 million weekly impressions as compared to 1,029.426 million weekly impressions in week 38 of 2018. Sun TV also led BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Tamil channels in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry market and all of the 5 programmes in BARC’s list of top 5 Tamil programmes during primetime in these markets based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week under review were aired on Sun TV.

    Continuing on at its second rank in week 39 of 2018 was Zee Anmol with 777.386 million weekly impressions as compared to 863.279 million weekly impressions in week 38. Zee Anmol was also ranked first in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs in the combined urban and rural Hindi speaking markets or HSM (U+R) and HSM (R) and was ranked ninth in HSM (U). The Balaji Telefilms produced soap Kumkum Bhagya aired on Zee Anmol was ranked second in BARC’s list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week in HSM (U+R) and was ranked first in HSM (R). Another soap from the channel, Mahek, was ranked third in HSM (R).

    Climbing up by a rank to third place was the first of the four Star India channels – FTA Hindi GEC Star Utsav in week 39 of 2018 with 743.449 million weekly impressions as compared to 695.203 million weekly impressions in week 38. Star Utsav was ranked second in BARC’s list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R), second in HSM (R) and was ranked seventh in HSM (U). The soap Rabba Ve aired on Star Utsav was ranked second in BARC’s weekly in BARC’s list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes during primetime  based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week in HSM (R).

    Star India’s flagship Hindi GEC Star Plus climbed two ranks to fourth place in week 39 of 2018 with 710.478 million impressions as compared to 655.169 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Star Plus was ranked third in BARC’s weekly lists of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R) and was ranked first in HSM (U) and ninth in HSM (R). Director’s Kut Productions produced Hindi soap Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai aired on Star Plus was ranked fourth in BARC’s list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in HSM (U+R) and second in HSM (U).

    Star India’s flagship Telugu GEC Star Maa also rose tow ranks in week 39 of 2018 to fifth place with 666.396 million weekly impressions as compared with 631.517 million weekly impressions in week 38. Star Maa was ranked first in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Telugu channels in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana market. Five programmes that were aired on Star Maa were present in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Telugu programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week in the same market.

    Another Star India FTA Hindi GEC Star Bharat re-entered BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres at rank six with 660.371 million weekly impressions. Star Bharat was also ranked fourth, fifth and sixth in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R), HSM (R) and HSM (U) respectively.

    Viacom 18’s flagship Hindi GEC Colors dropped to seventh rank in week 39 of 2018 with 657.875 million weekly impressions as compared to 727.244 million weekly impressions and seventh rank inn week 38. Colors was ranked sixth in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R), third in HSM (U) and tenth in HSM (R). The third season of the Balaji Telefilms produced supernatural drama Naagin 3 was among BARC’s top 5 Hindi GEC programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U).

    SPN’s women focused Hindi GEC Sony Pal re-entered BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres in week 39 of 2018 with 650.544 million weekly impressions at eighth rank. Sony Pal was ranked fifth and eighth in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U) respectively and was ranked third in HSM (R). The sitcom Tarak Mehta ka Oolah Chashmah on Sony Pal was ranked second in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Hindi programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week in HSM (R).

    SPN’s Hindi movies channel Sony Max retained ninth place in week 39 of 2018 with 647.987 million weekly impressions as compared to 624.491 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Sony Max was ranked first in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 Hindi Movies channels in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U) and was ranked fifth in HSM (R). Hindi feature films (HFF) Bahubali the Conclusion, Tarzan the Heman and Remo that featured on Sony Max were among the top 5 most watched Hindi Movies programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) for the week in BARC’s list in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U). Another HFF Sarrainodu was also in BARC’s HSM (U) list, while Bahubali the Conclusion was among the top 5 most watched HFFs in HSM (R) during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) for the week.

    Zeel’s flagship Hindi GEC Zee TV also saw a steep drop to tenth place in week 39 of 2018 with 645.325 million weekly impressions as compared to 657.866 million weekly impressions in week 37. Zee TV was ranked seventh in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 Hindi GECs’ in HSM (U+R) and HSM (R) and fourth in HSM (U) during the week. Two programmes that were aired on Zee TV- Kumkum Bhagya, and its spinoff Kundali Bhagya were at fifth and third ranks respectively in BARC’s list of top 5 Hindi GEC programmes during primetime based on average rating across all airings (original and repeat) in the week in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U).

    BENGALURU: Broadcast Audience Research Council’s (BARC) list of top 10 channels across genre – All India (Urban + Rural): Age 2+ had the Sun TV Network’s flagship Tamil GEC Sun TV as the only non-Hindi channel. Sun TV had three Hindi movies and five Hindi GECs for company in week 13 of 2018 (Saturday, 24 March 2018 to Friday, 30 March 2018). Sun TV continued its leadership of the list while Zee Anmol had to give way to Star India’s free to air (FTA) Hindi GEC Star Bharat which occupied second place in the list.

    From the network’s perspective, three Sony Picture Network India (SPN) channels; two channels each from Star India, Viacom 18 and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) and one channel from the Sun TV Network comprised BARC’s top 10 channels across genres for week 13 of 2018.

    Occupying its normal position, Sun TV topped the list with 985.490 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 996.118 million weekly impressions in the previous week. As has been the norm, Sun TV also topped BARC’s list of top five Tamil channels in the Tamil Nadu/Puducherry markets, and all the five top Tamil programmes during primetime in the week in these markets featured on Sun TV.

    Moving up two ranks to second place was Star Bharat with 756.665 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 739.606 million weekly impressions in week 12 of 2018. Star Bharat also led BARC’s list of top 10 Hindi GECs in the Hindi speaking urban and rural markets– HSM (U+R) and ranked second in BARC’s list of top 10 Hindi GECs in HSM (U), while it was ranked fourth in HSM (R).

    At third place was Zeel’s FTA Hindi GEC Zee Anmol with 739.830 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 813.355 million weekly impressions in week 12 of 2018. Zee Anmol was ranked second in BARC’s top 10 Hindi GECs list in HSM (U+R) and topped the list in HSM (R). The Balaji Telefilms-produced soap Kumkum Bhagya on Zee Anmol was the most watched programme during primetime in HSM (U+R) and HSM (R). Two other soaps from the channel – Jamai Raja and Ganga – were among the top five Hindi GEC programmes during primetime in HSM (R).

    At fourth place and down one rank from the previous week was SPN’s women-focused Hindi GEC Sony Pal with 712.094 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 744.620 million weekly impressions in week 12 of 2018. Sony Pal was ranked third in the top 10 Hindi GEC list in HSM (U+R) and second in HSM (R). The crime show CID on Sony Pal was ranked fifth among the top five Hindi GEC programmes during primetime in HSM (U+R) and was ranked second in HSM (R). Another long running programme – Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah on the channel was ranked third in HSM (R).

    Retaining its previous week’s rank of fifth was another Star India FTA channel – Star Utsav with 641.720 million weekly impressions as compared to 648.459 million weekly impressions of week 12 of 2018. Star Utsav was ranked fourth in the top 10 Hindi GEC list in HSM (U+R) and was ranked third in HSM (R).

    Climbing up one rank from its previous week’s rank to sixth place was SPN’s Hindi movies channel Sony Max with 587.930 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 594.219 million weekly impressions. Sony Max was ranked second in BARC’s list of top five Hindi movies channels in HSM (U+R), was ranked first in HSM (U) and ranked fifth in HSM (R). Both the parts of SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus – Baahubali the Beginning; and Baahubali the Conclusion (or Bahubali 2) that featured on Sony Max were among the top five Hindi movie programmes during primetime in HSM (U+R) and HSM (U), while Baahubali 2 was ranked third in HSM (R). Another Hindi feature film (HFF) that was aired on the channel – Kanchana the Wonder Car was ranked fourth in HSM (R).

    Climbing down one rank from the previous week to seventh place was Viacom18’s Hindi movies channel Rishtey Cineplex with 565.752 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 631.809 million weekly impressions in week 12 of 2018. Rishtey Cineplex topped the top five Hindi movies channels list in HSM (U+R), and was ranked second and fourth in HSM (R) and HSM (U) respectively. HFF Dangerous Khiladi which aired on the channel was the third most watched movie during primetime in HSM (U+R) and the fourth most watched HFF during primetime HSM (R). Another movie that featured on the channel – Ek Khiladi was the fifth most watched HFF in HSM (R).

    Viacom18’s flagship Hindi GEC channel Colors was ranked eighth (same as the previous week) with 551.565 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 588.459 million weekly impressions in week 12 of 2018. Colors was ranked first in BARC’s list of top 10 Hindi GEC channels in HSM (U).

    At ninth place was another SPN’s Hindi movies channel Sony Wah, which re-entered the top 10 channels across genres list with 549.020 million weekly impressions in week 13 of 2018. The channel was ranked third in BARC’s list of top five Hindi movies channels in HSM (U+R) and topped the list in HSM (R). HFF’s King Kong and Yevadu 2 were the third and fifth most watched Hindi movies during primetime respectively in HSM (U+R) while King Kong was the second most watched film during primetime in HSM (R).

    Climbing down one rank from the previous week to tenth place was Zeel’s flagship Hindi GEC Zee TV with 539.770 million weekly impressions in week 13 as compared to 581.721 million weekly impressions in week 12 of 2018. Kumkum Bhagya and its spinoff Kundali Bhagya that were also aired on Zee TV were the fourth and the second most watched Hindi GEC programmes during primetime respectively in HSM (U+R). Kundali Bhagya was the most watched Hindi GEC programme during primetime, while its older sibling Kundali Bhagya was the third most watched programme during primetime in HSM (U).

    BENGALURU: Baahubali 2 raked in viewership for Sony Max as the channel topped Broadcast Audience Research Council’s (BARC) weekly ratings for Top 5 Hindi Movie channels – HSM (U+R) : NCCS All : 2+ Individuals for week 41 of 2017 (Saturday, 7 October 2017 to Friday, 13 October 2017). Sony Max was ranked fourth in BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres (NCCS: All India (U+R): 2+ Individuals). Two other channels from the Sony Pictures Network (SPN) also were amongst BARC’s weekly list of top 10 channels across genres list for week 41 of 2017.

    Like week 40 of 2017 (Saturday, 30 September 2017 to Friday, 6 October 2017), three channels each from Star India and SPN, two channels from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) and one channel each from The Sun Network and Network 18 comprised BARC’s top 10 channels across genres weekly list for week 41 of 2017. From the genres perspective, seven Hindi GEC channels, and one channel each from the Hindi GEC, Tamil GEC and Telugu GEC made it to the top 10 channels list across genres.

    As is the norm (except during IPL cricket weeks) the top 10 channels across genre list was led by The Sun Network’s flagship Tamil GEC with 1,100.367 million impressions in week 41 of 2017. Sun TV was followed by Zeel’s FTA channel Zee Anmol with 759.094 million weekly impressions. Zee Anmol also led BARC’s top 10 Hindi GEC channels HSM (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals and top 10 Hindi GEC channels HSM (R): NCCS All : 2+ Individuals for the week. In the rural markets, Kaala Teeka on Zee Anmol was placed third among the top 5 Hindi GEC (R) programmes and helped the channel to its lead position in the rural markets.

    Zeel’s flagship GEC Zee TV was third in BARC’s across genres list for week 41 with 708.222 million weekly impressions. Zee TV was also ranked second in the Hindi GEC (U+R) markets. Balaji Telefilms productions- Kumkum Bhagya and its spinoff Kundali Bhagya helped Zee TV retain its position in the Hindi GEC and the across genres markets.

    As mentioned above, Sony Max was ranked fourth in the across genres list for week 41 of 2017 with 679.637 million weekly impressions followed by Viacom18’s flagship Hindi GEC Colors at fifth place with 644.187 million weekly impressions. Indian Hindi family drama Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki helped Colors, especially in the Hindi GEC urban markets in garnering viewership.

    At sixth place in BARC’s top 10 channels across genres list for week 41 of 2017 was Star India’s FTA and recently renamed channel Star Bharat with 643.035 million weekly impressions. Star Bharat was ranked third in BARC’s top 10 Hindi GEC (U+R) list for week 41. Star Bharat was followed by SPN’s flagship Hindi GEC channel Sony Entertainment Television with 602.697 million weekly impressions at seventh place. The Amitabh Bachchan hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) helped SET in garnering viewership.

    Star India’s flagship Telugu GEC Star Maa was eighth in the top 10 channels across genres list for week 41 of 2017 with 581.897 million weekly impressions followed by SPN’s women focused Hindi GEC Star Pal with 530.962 million weekly impressions at ninth place. Star India’s flagship Hindi GEC Star Plus completed the top 10 channels across genres list for week 41 of 2017 with 527.26 million weekly impressions.
