Recognising the potential for more meaningful engagement, he revealed that WhatsApp is actively working to enhance the interactivity of these business exchanges.

Efforts by WhatsApp, including driving value, leads, sales and customer engagement among others aim to transform simple messages into rich, interactive experiences, fostering better customer service and more dynamic business relationships. Mr Singh also reinforced his claim with numerous anecdotes and examples from various brands. As this platform continues to evolve, such advancements are poised to significantly impact how businesses connect with their customers, enhancing both efficiency and user experience.

Day 3 of Goafest 2024 also witnessed the WARC masterclass on The Anatomy of Effectiveness presented by Sujeet Kulkarni, apprising the attendees on the incorporation of effectiveness in work and life. He began by asking the audience about their idea of effectiveness, after which, he defined it as having two components: “Advertising that delivers on its objectives, and advertising that delivers commercial returns,” – the latter point being especially important today. As the global authority on marketing effectiveness, WARC has designed five building blocks of effectiveness. The first block is investing for growth, the second is balancing one’s spending, the third planning for reach, the fourth, is being creative, and the fifth building block is planning for recognition.

Thereafter, the attendees witnessed an enriching masterclass by WhatsApp on Meta Creative Shop x WhatsApp: Getting Creative with Conversations, presented by Varun Goswami. He emphasised how quality and creative content could create a greater impact in helping brands grow. With over 600 million users, WhatsApp undeniably offers significant potential for brands. He discussed the platform’s exciting creative and branding opportunities, focusing on multidimensional storytelling that extends beyond messaging. He highlighted several tools that WhatsApp and Meta use, such as the AI companion, personalised content, advertisements, reels, feeds, stories, and more. Varun also discussed the importance of making the user experience fun, interactive, and meaningful, ensuring that it feels more human and encourages users to return.

D&AD CEO Jo Jackson delivered a masterclass on Unpacking Brand Iconicity focusing on creating iconic brands and highlighting the rigorous standards of the D&AD awards, which attract 30,000 global entries. She emphasised D&AD’s commitment to nurturing talent through initiatives like D&AD New Blood and D&AD Shift, supporting creatives from underrepresented backgrounds. Jackson noted that 72% of 270 Shifters are now employed in creative roles, underscoring the “Win One, Teach One” mentorship ethos.

Jackson introduced ‘ownable iconicity’, where brands are identified solely through visual elements, demonstrated with a half-image activity featuring brands like McDonald’s and Oreo. Citing the Be Distinctive report, she stressed that only 15% of brand assets are truly distinctive. In 2025, $4.7 trillion will be spent on marketing, with 85% funding non-distinctive brand assets. The jury emphasised clarity in messaging for brand recognition, noting, “Iconicity is the key. To engage the audience, Jackson used QR codes to reveal the essence of brands like Lego and IKEA in three words, highlighting the importance of a brand’s essence in establishing its iconic status.

  • Unveiling the age of adaptability

    Unveiling the age of adaptability

Mumbai: Goafest 2024 brought together the brightest minds from across advertising, marketing, media, and business to explore how adaptability is not just a skill but an essential strategy in today’s dynamic market landscape. As industries continue to face unprecedented shifts influenced by technology, consumer behaviour, and global economic factors, ‘The Age of Adaptability’ provides an opportunity to showcase and discuss how embracing change is crucial for success.

Goafest 2024, hosted by The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) and The Advertising Club (TAC), kicked off with an electrifying performance by Bollywood playback singer Sukhwinder Singh, presented by B4U Music. His dynamic performance infused the event with energy, ensuring the audience remained captivated and enthusiastic throughout the day. Following this, members of the organising committee lit the ceremonial lamp. Prasanth Kumar, President of AAAI and CEO of South Asia at GroupM, then addressed the attendees, marking the festival’s 17th edition. This year’s event also celebrated the third year of collaboration between The ABBY Awards and One Show. Under the theme ‘The Age of Adaptability,’ delegates were welcomed to Goafest 2024 with a champagne launch, setting a celebratory tone for the proceedings.

In the first session presented by News 18 Network, titled Adapt To Thrive Not Just Survive, Harit Nagpal, Managing Director & CEO of Tata Play, emphasised the importance of adaptability as a key to thriving rather than merely surviving. In a captivating speech that left the audience both thinking and inspired, laden with anecdotes, the keynote speaker underlined the inevitability of disruption in our lives and the critical importance of resilience in the face of it. “Disruption can be caused by anything or anyone, but it becomes our responsibility to survive and thrive,” he asserted. He then discussed Business Continuity Planning, a strategy used in the 2000s, designed to address both expected and unexpected scenarios, and its relevance to COVID-19. He then moved on to highlight the surge in digital interactions, including video calls and remote work, which have now become the standard. The pandemic, he noted, disrupted traditional office setups but ultimately led to more flexible and efficient work arrangements.

He also revealed that a significant and growing proportion of Tata Play’s customer base is now opting for digital recharge options, marking a notable shift in consumer behaviour. This trend is reflected in the company’s increasing market share, as more and more customers embrace the convenience of virtual recharges. In a nod to the rapid pace of innovation, he declared, “Disruption is the new norm.” From the World Wide Web to AI, each breakthrough is shrinking the gap between disruptions, and we’re just getting started. His parting words, “Either you disrupt, or someone else is going to do it for you, and the best time to do it is when you feel the most comfortable!” left an indelible mark!

Thereafter, Sun Neo presented an enlightening session titled, Navigating The Age Of Adaptability: Leading with Vision, Flexibility, and Purpose, led by Sanjiv Mehta, Executive Chairman of L Catterton India. In this compelling talk, Mehta delved into the critical elements of leading with vision, flexibility, innovation, agility, and dynamic purpose in today’s ever-changing market landscape. He articulated how visionary leadership combined with the agility to pivot and a strong sense of purpose can drive business success and resilience. “Agility demands spare capacity and the ability to redirect talent towards value creation”, he mentioned.

Mehta also highlighted the importance of innovation through several examples, noting that no business follows a linear trajectory. Instead, resilience and adaptability are essential for organisations to bounce back and thrive in a dynamic environment. He stated, “Learning happens when you have the humility to say, ‘I don’t know?’” – by admitting so, organisations and corporations open themselves to new knowledge and understanding, fostering a growth mindset that enables them to learn and develop from others’ expertise and experiences, not just myopically thinking of profit generation.

He also highlighted myriad leadership attributes, including sensemaking, a term coined by Karl Weick, which involves piecing together disparate information to foresee and navigate complexity. He spoke about care and compassion being a core value for leaders as well. Moreover, while focusing on the value of team over individuals, he emphasised, “The concept of a great leader is a myth; it is always the work of a great team.” Overall, this session offered invaluable insights, highlighting the need for businesses to remain adaptable and forward-thinking to navigate and thrive in the age of constant change.

Soon after, in a powerful session titled, From Setbacks to Comebacks: The Power of Persistence presented by Adani, acclaimed Writer and Film Director, Tahira Kashyap captivated the audience with her inspiring journey, moderated by Atika Farooqui, Celebrity Host & Actor. Tahira shared personal anecdotes and professional experiences, illustrating how resilience and determination have been instrumental in her success. “Women go through multiple hardware upgrades; every day is so different for women, every hour is so different than the previous one,” she mentions, also candidly referring to the books she has written on womanhood and motherhood.

When asked about the various facets of her identity, she smiled, “My identity is no longer defined by my title, but by the relationships I cherish. I take immense pride in being known as a wife, mother, daughter, and Mrs. Kashyap. It’s the people in my life who give my existence meaning, and I’m humbled to be seen as a person, not just a professional label.” Throughout the discussion, she underscored that setbacks are not the end but opportunities for growth and reinvention. She reflected on the numerous hardships that life can bring, yet felt profound gratitude to the universe for her journey thus far. Her faith had been a constant source of strength, empowering her to overcome obstacles. Recognising that each person’s life is unique, she acknowledged that everyone faces challenges, but it is their faith that enables them to persevere. With a steadfast determination to create meaningful stories, she vowed that her female protagonists would never be relegated to marginal roles, instead, they would be dynamic characters who drive the narrative forward. With a personal commitment to growth and self-improvement, she embraced the challenges that lay ahead, knowing that her perspective and journey would shape her path.

Her story resonated deeply, offering a compelling reminder that persistence is key to overcoming challenges and achieving long-term success. This session underscored the transformative power of perseverance in turning obstacles into stepping stones.

In a finale brimming with wisdom, Disney+ Hotstar presented a session, titled Lessons of Adaptability: Embracing Failure to Touch Success, featuring Indian actress Medha Shankr, and actor Vikrant Massey, moderated by the multifaceted Actor, Producer & Entrepreneur, Neha Dhupia. Medha and Vikrant, the cast of the acclaimed film 12th Fail, illuminated the audience with their insights on embracing failure as a stepping stone towards triumph.

Reflecting on his 21 years in the industry, Vikrant delved into the essence of adaptability, citing his varied experiences from television to movies and the invaluable lesson that success cannot exist without acknowledging failure. He said, “Success cannot be defined as a standard without failure. Out of 365 days in a year, in 300 you’re off the mark, and only 65 are successes.” He shared anecdotes from his latest project, ‘12th Fail,’ finding resonance in the film’s themes of familial responsibility and the values instilled by Manoj Kumar’s vision. Meanwhile, Medha, having relocated to Mumbai several years ago, echoed Vikrant’s sentiment on embracing failure as a catalyst for growth.

Despite uncertainties about the film’s reception, both actors were committed to authenticity, prioritising storytelling over commercial success. They expressed openness to future collaborations, guided by a shared dedication to staying true to the director’s vision and exploring diverse storytelling opportunities. Through engaging anecdotes and candid reflections, they demonstrated how resilience and adaptability are vital ingredients on the path to success.

The ongoing partnership between The Advertising Club and One Show has elevated the ABBY Awards 2024 Powered by One Show to unprecedented levels of global recognition and excellence for the third consecutive year. This year, a staggering 3,506 entries were submitted from 273 companies, demonstrating the immense enthusiasm and commitment of both participants and jury chairs towards the awards.

Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) president and CEO of GroupM South Asia CEO Prasanth Kumar said, “The composition of the clients has been very interesting this year with a notable presence of tech specialists. It’s encouraging to see such diversity. It’s truly heartening to witness the growing number of partners, which not only strengthens and welcomes many newcomers into the Goafest fold. While we anticipated challenges, the dedication and support of all involved have exceeded our expectations, and for that, we’re immensely grateful. We’re excited to welcome many new faces and investors to Goafest 2024; we’re also looking forward to numerous tech sessions and integrations that will enrich the experience. Our goal is to institutionalise Goafest, constantly striving to improve. By completing 60% of the work early and refining timing, we’re making practical strides toward our vision for the next year.”

The Advertising Club and Group CEO of Havas India, South East and North Asia Rana Barua said, “Through countless journeys together, we’ve always been driven by passion, not profit. This year, our commitment to not miss out has been unanimous. The whole team rallied together, united by our love for this industry, to make Goafest 2024 happen within our tight timeframe.”

Goafest Organising Committee chaiperson Jaideep Gandhi said, “We aim to keep this festival relevant, as we’ve successfully done in the past two years, especially in the post-pandemic era. Each year, we strive to introduce new elements, constantly raising the bar.”

Dheeraj Sinha, Group CEO – India and South Asia, FCB group CEO – India and South Asia and Co-chair Awards Governing Council, Abby Awards 2024 powered by One Show Dheeraj Sinha said, “We’re thrilled to see a fantastic response from returning agencies, with VML, and McCann Worldgroup India, amongst others, making a comeback, along with many others. • Rajnish Lall: Ad man to OTT content maker

Rajnish Lall: Ad man to OTT content maker

MUMBAI: With the explosion of OTT space in the last decade, the content creation folks are having a gala time like never before.  In India alone, there are currently over 30 OTT platforms fighting aggressively for the customer’s wallet-share and screen-time by offering movies, music, sports streaming, satellite channels and original shows.

This ever-increasing demand for original content has opened new avenues for young production enthusiasts, for whom  content creation is  more than just minting money.

Rajnish Lall is one such movie enthusiast who forayed into production with his debut short movie ‘The Fall’ 13-years ago. Having spent more than a decade in corporate life working with advertising agencies (Clarion, Contract & Bates) and as marketing head of B4U Music, Lall had little experience in production before his first project.

Lall says that he was bored with his life as an ad-film maker and was looking for a new medium to tell stories close to his heart.

His very first project, The Fall, a slickly shot love tale was a 10-minute-long silent movie featuring Rahul Bose and Nauheed Cyrusi.

Recalling his experience, Lall says that the entire movie was shot in a single day with a budget of just over Rs 60,000 including the post-production cost.

“To be honest, even Rs 60,000 felt like a big amount then. We shot the entire movie on Super 16 camera as there were no HD cameras then. I collected old footage left from earlier shoots. I asked my colleagues to edit it for free. Believe me, no one in our team, right from Rahul Bose, Nauheed Cyrusi, cinematographer Vishal Sinha (who shot Bhoot), composer Sandeep Chowta, was paid. People liked the movie and that gave me the confidence to continue making films,” remembers Lall, who since then has produced over 500 ad-films, one movie and two full seasons of a web-series.

“The best thing about this experience was that I could tell stories that I wanted, which was not possible in ad-film making.”

Lall’s next big break was Sooper se Ooper, which he produced in 2013 with Reliance Entertainment. However, he still regrets that the movie did not do as well commercially despite having a good script and some amazing performances.

“2013 was a terrible year. Most of the movies produced by Reliance had tanked. There was Besharam, Zanjeer 2. At one stage, Reliance was not even upbeat about releasing the movie. When it was released, it got a good response, but since the following week was the release of Krrish 3, it could not reach its full potential,” he says, candidly accepting that its failure set him back.

Big success came to Lall soon enough with Thinkistan, a story about changing dynamics of advertising in India in the late 1990s, when satellite TV helped advertisers find new reach. Told through the characters of English-speaking Hema and Hindi-speaking Amit, the series, released on MX Player, is like a love letter to the changing world of Indian advertising.

Lall says that Thinkistan is the story of India in transition in 1990s, told through the contrasting experiences of two advertising professionals, one English-speaking and urban, the other Hindi-speaking and coming from small-town India.

The show mirrors India’s evolution in the 21st century where more and more talent is coming from small-towns, where the likes of Piyush Pandey and Prasoon Joshi have elbowed-out big, established English copywriters and where Hindi is secure about its place in India and co-exists comfortably with English, adds Lall.

The immediate success of Thinkistan, however, has not taken Lall of his feet. Any other usual run-of-the-mill producer would have tried to cash-in on its success by making similar shows. Lall, on the contrary, is taking his time to find a truly inspiring idea.

“We were approached by multiple OTT players following the success of Thinkistan. However, I was clear that I do not want to do any regular, usual thriller, sex-comedy or family soap-opera. I am looking for a unique, big idea. I am in no rush to make just another ordinary show,” says Lall.

Talking about the streaming platforms, Lall says it has definitely improved availability of funds for shows.

“OTT is here to say. However, its success and reach would depend on the quality of content offered,” quips Lall, who believes there is enough space for the more than 30 OTT players to co-exist in the expansive Indian market.

Lall also has no qualms in accepting that he writes and produces shows for a global audience.

“I do not belong to Hindustan, but a place called Thinkistan. My stories are based in India, but the emotions my characters deal with are universal, they cannot be limited to one particular time or society. I am making original, premium, web content for a global audience,” says Lall, adding that the coming of OTT platforms will help Indian content reach global audiences.

To an extent, this has already happened. The international Emmy awards this year definitely has an Indian footprint. Two Indian shows, Sacred Games and Lust Stories, are nominated for Best Drama.

“Indians have a natural talent for storytelling, even longer form storytelling. We gave the world Mahabarata, the world’s longest poem. If Indian producers are honest to their creative integrity, Indian content can truly reach a global audience.”

Talking about censorship on OTT, Lall says that while he is principally opposed to the idea of censorship, he is also honest enough to accept that some of the producers have used the freedom offered by OTT platforms irresponsibly by overdoing nudity and cuss words, even when it’s not required by the script.

“Not all of us are watching shows on mobiles. People are also watching shows on TV with families. And too much nudity is definitely a barrier in providing entertainment to this audience.”

He underlines that while everyone is cashing-in on nudity and violence, there is still some reluctance on the part of Indian producers to take up politically sensitive issues.

While Lall did not share specifics of his current projects, he did tell us that he is working on a show which tells the story of a product over 100 years, starting from the non-cooperation movement in the 1920s to 2019.

Asked about his personal favourite shows, Lall says that he likes the scripting of Family Man and Made in Heaven. In foreign shows, Fauda and Barry.

Having carved a niche space for himself as a producer of ad-films, web series and TV shows, Lall is currently in a happy space, where he is willing to wait and invest his time and energy in a truly inspiring idea, very much like the tag-line of his show Thinkistan – ‘Idea Jiska, India Uska’.

This notion has been thoughtfully worked on by artist ‘Al QawiTazalNanavati’ to make a simple yet playful and engaging installation. The materials used are playing cards which are upcycled merchandise from B4U’s stock and paperclips to further the notion of work and play being simultaneous and facilitated by music. Ghungroo bells have been added to accentuate the feeling of being inside ‘B4U music’ or living the channels ethos. This magnanimous wind chime wants to make the engager feel what the brand stands for and how music and melodies are part of our everyday life.”

Chicago educated Artist and Teacher ‘Al QawiTazalNanavati’ said, “Wind-chimes symbolize the arrival of soothing breeze. Reimagining it through playing cards and ghungroos added to the subtle musical quality they naturally hold. B4U has been exactly that for generations in our country, a soothing sound of Indian/Bollywood music. So, it made sense to me to make a grand installation since B4U and the Bollywood industry have always been the epitome of the old phrase "larger than life".”

Till date the world’s largest wind chime installation was in Illinois made of metallic tubes suspended 49 feet from the ground. However, B4U’s installation is made of upcycled playing cards and is the tallest and largest playing card wind chime created till date.

The installation was on display from 11th Oct to 13th Oct at Hall no.2 Bombay Exhibition Center, NESCO, Goregaon East. Off the Highway. The installation saw a lot of interest from malls and public spaces like railway stations are eager to have it displayed in their spaces for the common man.

90s tunes see revival on music channels

MUMBAI: Popular music from the 1990s is being revived on music TV channels today. Sony Mix, 9X Jalwa, B4U Music and Mastiii are among channels reintroducing the music on television while keeping the focus sharply on Bollywood numbers.

Film songs of 90s vintage have charisma of their own. In the romanticism of the previous era, a girl’s blush or flickering of eyelashes, were signs of sparks flying. Recently launched channel MTV Beats has also intends to come up with a new show with music from that decade.

Once upon a time, Doordarshan, with its exclusive black-and-white recordings and private TV played old songs but have since then been sidelined to just radio stations. Retro songs are the anchor by which the older generations recall their younger times, friends, company and even long-forgotten incidences of first love.

Well, nostalgia is good business. According to reports, Bollywood accounts for more than 90 per cent of the revenue of India’s Rs 10.6 billion pop music industry.

In an earlier interview with Indiantelevision.com, Viacom18 head-youth, music and English entertainment Ferzad Palia said that their target audience for the channel are youngsters. He said that the channel’s viewership grew tremendously as what others have done in 10-12 years, they have managed to accomplish in a few months. “Music genre is so commoditised that everyone is playing the same music. Since the number of releases is the same, creating differentiation is very important. People loved us because we were different and we don’t want to lose that and that’s across the whole MTV universe.”

A good music channel is one where everyone finds their favourites at their own suitable time. So, while some channels play old classics at night, some play latest hits, and others play evergreen numbers throughout the day.

SAB & MAX cluster EVP and head Neeraj Vyas told us earlier that the channel will always have the quotient of playing older songs since it gains audience attraction. The music in the late last century is what Vyas calls as ‘ageless music’ that is prominent in reality shows, parties and singing contests. Sony Mix’s day kicks off with slow music followed by the 90s era. Later in the day, it telecasts mellow and soft songs followed by new tracks up till 9 pm. The last three hours of the night are dedicated to retro music.

MTV Beats will soon launch its new show Flashback from Monday to Friday 9 pm to 12 am while B4U plays Awaaz de Kahaan during the same time slot. Mastiii channel airs Evergreen Hits between 1 pm and 3 pm and at the 9 pm time slot, the network plays The Golden Era with Annu Kapoor and Raat k Humsafar.

Old melodies on music channels bring nostalgia. A walk down memory lane does a world of good every now and then for ardent music lovers.
