“Cricket’s success on the field has a very real impact on Indians”: FGII’s Anup Rau

Mumbai: In line with its continued thrust on ‘Innovation’, Future Generali India Insurance Company (FGII), has launched its annual report for FY 2022-23 in a never-seen-before avatar. This report comes in the form of a book and is one of India’s most comprehensive cricketing memoir-cum-annual report. The annual report consists of a specially curated collector’s item – a section on Game Changing Moments – penned by the sports journalist, Ayaz Memon.

The book encapsulates the vibrant journey of Indian cricket since 1932 – showcasing a remarkable voyage through 18 pivotal Game Changing Moments that have reshaped Indian cricket’s narrative and left an indelible mark on the nation’s collective consciousness. The report is, further, enriched by exclusive interviews by Memon with four cricketers across different eras – Mohinder Amarnath, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and Mithali Raj.

The memoir-cum-annual report was launched by cricketer Anil Kumble, in the presence of the author of Game Changing Moments Memon and Future Generali India Insurance MD & CEO Anup Rau, along with other dignitaries. Host and actress, Mandira Bedi, anchored the ceremony, and Kumble faced a few turners from her repertoire – reminiscing the long climb of Indian Cricket to its present glory and his experiences. At the event, Memon narrated a book chapter, beautifully brought to life through a sand art presentation. To add an exciting twist to the proceedings, Kumble took centre stage and performed an extraordinary act by bowling to Rau. The climax occurred when Kumble’s delivery to Rau struck the LED screen, shattering it and revealing the long-awaited annual report.

Indiantelevision.com on the sidelines of the launch of the book, caught up with FGII’s MD & CEO Anup Rau

    Edited excerpts

On the brief about the book launch

We always make our annual report interesting to connect with our stakeholders. We had a comic book format, we had it as a cookbook. Last year we sold 3500 for the Bollywood blockbuster report. This year is cricket, which we believe it’s kind of a new religion in this country. I do believe there’s a lot of inspiration businesses can take from sport because my personal view is that be it sport or be it business, It’s a combination of both science and art. It’s not just science alone, I think it’s somewhere the intersection of these two. Ayaz has beautifully penned 18 pivotal moments of Indian cricket like from the time when we made a debut, to the recently concluded WTC finals, and back to back series with Australia, which is one of my personal favourites. And obviously, the 83 World Cup, 2011 World Cup so on and so forth. We also believe we will gain changes in many ways in terms of the way we approach our business, we’re in terms of product distribution technology, by having products for same sex couples being an employer of choice where we tried to be an inclusive employer in many ways. Today, close to one per cent of employees are differently abled, for instance. So you will see a lot of that being captured in the book. And obviously, it’s very interesting reading, and it’s for a good cause in case whatever the proceeds go to charity.

On including cricket in the annual report and any strategy behind it

The idea was just to make it interesting. I do believe that one of the things we really want to do is to make sure that some of these financial numbers and figures and understanding is more accessible to the public at large and one of the ways to do this is to make it interesting and easy for people to understand. And the annual report just attempts to do it.

On some inputs about the book and the reason for being a must read for cricket enthusiasts

That’s because it captures the history of the game through some of India’s best and most pivotal moments. It takes your eyes, it’s taken us right from our first match. In 1932 to what’s happening right now, we got interviews with legends like Mithali Raj, VVS Laxman, Mohinder Amarnath etc. Today Anil Kumble was himself on stage. Like I said, businesses and sports inspire each other. Not just that, cricket’s success on the field has a very real impact on Indians. And if we do well we will spring in our step that we want to do well, we get inspired by and so on and so forth.

On any more such initiative in future

We’ll see. I mean there’s a new annual report for next year, so let’s see what we will do with that!

Future Generali India Insurance celebrates cricket through its annual report

Mumbai:  In line with its continued thrust on ‘Innovation’, Future Generali India Insurance Company (FGII) launched its Annual Report for FY 2022-23 in a never-seen-before avatar.

The memoir-cum-annual report was launched by cricketer Anil Kumble, in the presence of the author of Game Changing Moments, Memon and Future Generali India Insurance MD & CEO Anup Rau along with other dignitaries. The exhilarating climax occurred when Kumble’s delivery to Rau struck the LED screen, shattering it and revealing the long-awaited annual report.

Speaking at the launch, Kumble said, “Being the nation’s most followed sport, cricket epitomises hope, joy, celebration, sometimes even gloom for this country of a billion plus. But one thing remains constant across the spectrum of emotions – is the inspiration. Be it a valiant loss or a gallant victory, Cricket represents the spirit of “efforts over results” – much like insurance. I would like to congratulate Ayaz, Anup and Team FGII for their efforts in realising this audacious project.”

The launch of this innovative book comes at an opportune moment, given the Men’s Cricket World Cup is going on, as we speak. India’s hopes are pinned on our formidable team, and I would always wish them the best”, concluded Kumble.

Dedicated to a country of a billion plus cricketing connoisseurs, this unique book is available across leading national bookstores for in-store purchase and is also available online on Amazon.

Commenting on the initiative, Rau said, “In the world of insurance and beyond, the true game changers are those who innovate with a purpose. We have transformed our annual report into a collectible cricketing memoir and are making it available for sale. Like in the previous years, the funds generated from the orders of these reports will go for a noble cause to our NGO partners. For us, it’s not just about statistics; it’s about the stories that inspire. This effort is our tribute to the spirit of cricket and the aspirations of a billion-plus fans. And as the Men’s Cricket World Cup unfolds, we wish our home team the very best.”

Future Generali India Insurance has a unique track record of preparing annual reports, as collectibles, which are offered for purchase to the connoisseurs. The proceeds from purchase of the report goes to Future Generali’s NGO partners. So far, the company has been able to touch 5,000+ lives through the orders received from their previous annual reports.

  • Regional to be at the forefront of content

Regional to be at the forefront of content

MUMBAI: The regional space in India is the new target for everyone. But what exactly is it that pulls content creators to divide themselves into India’s varied languages and will this fad stay in the future, too? The question was discussed in a FICCI Frames 2018 session titled ‘regional is the new mass media.’

The News Minute managing editor Dhanya Rajendran said that any market outside of Mumbai and Delhi is considered regional, which the national media has ignored for a long time while underestimating its potential. “In the last two years, with the advent of digital media, more and more media houses have started realising that there is a lot of readership not because of good journalism, but because they know that there are consumers in places such as Bengaluru, Vijayawada, Madurai and Vishakhapatnam consuming all kinds of content,” he said adding that he hoped that more digital spaces would spring up in Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Bihar in the next two to three years. “Our mainstream media will be forced to follow-up news stories that they were keeping in the backburner and looked down upon as regional stories,” he said.

Eminent sports columnist and journalist Ayaz Memon pointed out that sports was the classic example of a mass media product. “Football is the biggest sport in Europe, but there is a difference between the French, the Dutch and the English viewing the same match. Look at the regional newspapers like Manorama, Matrabhumi and Anand Bazaar Patrika. At one time, they were larger selling newspapers than the English ones. The easiest to penetrate has been sports because the language of sports is universal. The language of consumption of sports may differ from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada and consumers enjoy consuming the content in the language they easily understand.”

Network18 has been prominent in venturing into the digital space. Its group president Avinash Kaul said, “Regional is dominating the entire space, the regional wave is here to stay and will continue to grow. We have around 270 regional channels out of 500 channels overall in BARC. The regional viewership is higher than the Hindi viewership and has a market share of 47 per cent. General entertainment channels (GEC) being the biggest attraction, regional GECs have 30 per cent more viewership than Hindi GECs. If we take a look at the advertisers, the regional market has seen an increase of 20 per cent in the last two years and around 3500 advertisers are exclusive to the regional market.”

Your Story managing editor Darlington Hector said that the news platform decided to branch out into the regional market in 2012-13 with Hindi, Tamil and Bangla. He said that in the late 90s, the English content consumption was around 80 per cent globally and the next decade around 2007-08 it dropped to about 27 per cent. English as a preferred language of consumption has been dropping in importance every decade and he sees that happening in the future as well. “The reason for this is the loss of credibility in the last few years and a good opportunity now for online digital platforms to express better. People do connect emotionally with the regional media today, which I am not seeing with the national media today. The television anchor has played a big role in destroying the credibility. The next 25 years will be the golden period for the regional languages of India, especially online,” he concluded.

Both broadcast and online platforms are vehemently marching into the country’s various languages. Hindi and English, which till now were the holders of the mediums, will slowly see viewership shift to people’s language of choice.

  • Merging I-League & ISL can solve logistical chaos in Indian football calendar: Nitin Kukreja

Merging I-League & ISL can solve logistical chaos in Indian football calendar: Nitin Kukreja

MUMBAI: Stakeholders in the growing Indian sports industry unanimously agree that the appetite for football in India is definitely on the rise though there are numerous challenges, which have to be overcome before its full potential can be realised.

At the recently held Star Sports India Football Forum 2015, Star India president sports Nitin Kukreja said that while merging I-League and ISL would solve much of the logistical chaos currently reigning in the Indian football calendar, no concrete progress has been made towards that. He also stressed on the need for schools and colleges to participate in the sport in a structured manner in order to allow a footballing culture to develop on a larger scale, especially in North and West India where the sport does not have much popularity.

Senior professionals from the sports and broadcast industry deliberated on the multiple opportunities in the football sector at the forum titled: “Taking Indian Football Higher, Deeper, Wider,” held in Mumbai on 29 October.

The day-long conference revolved around various Knowledge Sessions such as: Governance & Management – Faster Growth, Higher Visibility, Stronger Management; Maximising Fan Experience- Getting It Right on Air and In Stadia; Internet & Mobile Keys To Experiential Nirvana- Connecting To the Consumer in a Fast Evolving Media Landscape and Corporate Social Opportunity– The Business Potential in Grassroots Outreach.

Established in 2010, the India Football Forum, the flagship property of the SportzPower Knowledge Series (SKS) in partnership with Event Capital, brings together some of the best minds in the industry on one platform to deliberate on the business of football in this market.

Industry stalwarts such as U Sports founder Ronnie Screwvala, DFL Sports Enterprises chief representative Asia Pacific Peter Leible, Future Brands MD & CEO Santosh Desai and Kukreja spoke on the various factors that indicate the rapid strides made by football, and the initiatives required to take it to the next level.

Leible, who drew a parallel to the recent period of revival in German football to provide context to the Indian experience, said a similar widespread initiative, with emphasis on clubs doing their bit on the grassroots and academy side of things, could lead to a uniform growth of football in India though “patience” is the key criteria while implementing such programmes.

Screwvala, in conversation with conference chair Ayaz Memon, said that with ISL, the changes are positive in Indian football, but there needs to be an effort to develop the game at the grassroots level to actually help improve the standards of Indian football.

Highlighting the power of Live Video, Memon recalled, “I remember my first international tour to Pakistan in 1982, I would finish watching the day’s play and then run to the Central Telegraph Office to telex my review of the day’s play. My editor in Bombay would receive the tape at his end, key it in again, get bromides made after, which would come the plates to be put on the printing press and hours later, my words would see the light of day.”

Memon further added, “Following all that, there could be zero feedback from the audience. The internet has been as significant as the invention of the wheel and rapid improvements in technology have made dissemination of information so much more dynamic. Look at the #fame app now. • “ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will attract TV audience of 1 billion”: Andrew Robb

“ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will attract TV audience of 1 billion”: Andrew Robb

MUMBAI: The countdown to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has already begun with fans gearing up to watch the matches either on television or at the stadiums. Buoyant about the event, Australian Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Robb is of the opinion that it will engage one fifth of the world’s population. Robb said, “India and Australia are both blessed with the love for cricket. The upcoming World Cup will attract a TV audience of one billion!”

Robb was speaking at the ‘Match Australia’ programme, which is part of the ongoing Australia Business Week being held in India. He had great admiration for the ‘God’ of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, who sadly will be missed at this year’s World Cup. “Tendulkar is not the God of Cricket just in India but also Australia,” he added.

Post his revelations, a panel discussion brainstormed and analysed on the current form of the Indian and Australian cricket teams slated to participate for the World Cup. Joining the panel were cricket expert and commentator Harsha Bhogle, former cricketer and current Cricket Australia board member Michael Kasprowicz and former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar. The session was moderated by sports columnist Ayaz Memon.

Posing a question to Kasprowicz, Memon said, “Michael Clarke, who is recovering from a series of hamstring injuries, will be leading the Australian squad. From a fitness point of view, is it a wise decision?” In his reply, Kasprowicz said, “While that could be a concern, one needs to look at it at an overall point of view. It is a great, experienced and in my opinion a very balanced squad.” Manjrekar interjected saying that he found the overall game scenario in Australia changing, from a team that was earlier precise in decision making to today not being able to take a concrete call as in Clarke’s case. Kasprowicz didn’t differ with him as he agreed that the current scenario in Australian cricket was changing but only a bit, not more.

Memon with his insights of the game took to another parallel of the game by asking, “With Dhoni announcing his retirement from test cricket, is the state of mind of the current squad going to be crucial? Will the decision and the World Cup redefine the role for MS Dhoni ahead?” Manjrekar was all praise for ‘captain cool’ by speaking about his prowess for the game. He found Dhoni to possess a unique character wherein he, with his decision-making and on-field abilities, was able to make up for half of the overall team. “Dhoni is not someone who is concerned about the history of the game. In fact he will not be able to name even five captains of the Indian cricket teams from the past, if questioned.” Not stopping there, he went on to mouth his own version of the famous ‘Mere Paas Ma Hai’ dialogue from Bollywood movie ‘Deewaar’ by looking at Kasprowicz teasingly and saying, “If you guys have Steve Smith and Mitchell Johnson, we have Mahendra Singh Dhoni.” While the audience cackled, Kasprowicz, not surprisingly, was unable to comprehend the humour.

Memon then quizzed Bhogle about his biggest concern with regards to India’s squad for the upcoming event. The expert lamented, “India’s bowling skills are weakening a bit. If the bowling skills improve, we will have a great game. You don’t need to take many wickets but just bowl well.”

The panel then moved to discussing whether India’s celebrity cricketer Virat Kohli could become the biggest pivot at the World Cup this year? Manjrekar said it was a treat to watch both Kohli and Steven Smith bat at the last India versus Australia test series. “Kohli will be a great contributor at the World Cup after Dhoni,” he expressed.

The statement led to Memon asking the panel if India’s squad had the right balance of experienced as well as young players? Bhogle was the first to reply, saying, “With Tendulkar and most of the well known bowlers from the previous squad now gone, it looks very much younger but I know from the talent that was available to us, the best were picked.” Manjrekar added that one important feature of the World Cup was holding up one’s nerves even during the most testing times. He therefore was of the opinion that India’s squad had a balanced mix of young players as well as those who were not only experienced but also temperamentally strong.

While the panel picked up their home teams as favourites to win for the World Cup, Kasprowicz concluded by saying, “I wish to see the finals being played between India and Australia at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) stadium with both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbot in attendance.”

Prior to the discussion Bhogle was honored with the ‘Friends of Australia’ award for his contribution to the game and helping foster better relations between the two countries. As part of the ‘Match Australia Programme,’ the gentlemen’s game will be used as an opportunity for investors to visit Australia, enjoy the game and also help boost commerce with a three day weekend programme. As part of the initiative, businessmen can attend investment roundtables on Fridays, followed by sight-seeing tours on Saturdays and by watching cricket matches at the stadium on Sundays.
