Clarifying all speculations behind the ($ 1 billion) Terminator franchise reboot, Paramount has confirmed the release for 26 June 2015. The studio is in works to co-finance and distribute the reboot of James Cameron‘s Terminator franchise that originally hit the theatres in 1984.

Highbrow picture maker Megan Ellison has reportedly spent over $20 million for the rights of the super-hit franchise in 2011. However the project didn‘t move forward until Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures joined forces with brother David Ellison, whose Skydance Productions has a deal with Paramount and makes popcorn movies.

While the script is being penned by Avatar‘s executive producer Laeta Kalogridis and Drive Angry‘s editor Patrick Lussier, Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Skydance will serve as executive producers. Arnold Schwarzenegger will return as the emotionless robot in the title role.

  • James Cameron in JV in China for developing 3D

James Cameron in JV in China for developing 3D

MUMBAI: Filmmaker James Cameron has entered into a joint venture in China for developing and expanding the technology in the country.
The filmmaker‘s Cameron/Pace Group (CPG), that specialises in 3D technology, has partnered with two Chinese firms from the city of Tianjin, Tianjin High-Tech Holding and Tianjin North Group, it is learnt.
“The future of entertainment is 3D and we believe that the future of 3D is right here in China,” said Cameron in a statement adding that he was in the Chinese capital not as a director but as a businessman.
The noted director, who is convinced that the transition of the film industry from 2D to 3D is inevitable, believes that “China is the most fertile soil to plant that seed”.
“We are here to make movies better by working with film-makers here in China,” said Cameron. “We are here to give them the tools and the techniques to make the transition from 2D to 3D,” he added.
Cameron hopes to take advantage of a box-office explosion in China, where the film industry is booming and the number of cinema halls is on the rise, potentially offering one of the most lucrative markets in the world.
Cameron‘s Titanic and Avatar, incidentally, broke all records in China.

  • 4D formatted films in anvil

    4D formatted films in anvil

MUMBAI: Ever since the advent of 3D formatted movies, practically every big-budget film is being released in the format, with higher ticket prices boosting the box-office intake.

The latest attempt to move beyond 3D technology has resulted in a new cinematic encounter known as 4-D. The film industry is enthusiastic about the unique theatre- experience that 4D promises to deliver.

CJ Group, a South Korean company that operates Asia‘s largest theater chain, is on the cutting edge of the technology necessary for the display of 4-D movies. The company has 29 specialty theatres that screen blockbuster studio releases such as Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Prometheus.

The group is on the verge of closing a transaction with a nationwide US cinema chain that would create 200 4D theatres over the next five years.

The 4D technology has already been in use in theatres in Thailand, South Korea, and Mexico, and also in some theme parks. One of the company‘s biggest clients is the fourth-largest theater chain, Cinepolis, which recently expanded into Southern California. The company owns a dozen 4D theatres in Mexico.

Company execs project that filmgoers will be willing to pay an additional $8 beyond the cost of mere 3-D just to involve more of their senses while watching their favorite superheroes. CJ set up a lab located close to the famous Grauman‘s Chinese Theater in Hollywood to demonstrate and market its latest system, which it calls 4DX.

This isn‘t the first time that the film industry has tried to bring senses other than sight to film audiences. In 1960 a film titled Scent of Mystery utilised something called ‘Smell-O-Vision‘ which featured 30 different odours that included the smell of flowers, liquor, and gun smoke wafting toward the nostrils of the audience at appropriate times during the screening.

Then, for a film that was released in 1974 titled Earthquake, theatres used a technology called Sensurround that utilised large bass resonating speakers that shook the room with such intensity that Grauman‘s Chinese theatre had to install a safety net to catch falling plaster as the film was shown.

In 1981 John Waters used what is called as Odorama which allowed the audience to smell the cinematic scenes with scratch-and-sniff cards and in 2011 Robert Rodriguez used a similar approach that he referred to as Aromascope.

  • Sequel of Avatar delayed

    Sequel of Avatar delayed

MUMBAI: James Cameron‘s highly anticipated sequel to Avatar has been delayed.

Earlier, the makers had planned to bring Avatar 2 in December 2014 followed by Avatar 3 next year but producer Jon Landau has confirmed that bringing back-to-back sequels would not be possible, it is understood.

“We‘re not naming dates, but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It‘s about getting it right… movies make release dates; release dates don‘t make movies,” that producer has reportedly said.

Cameron spent a lot of time and research on his recent dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench and he was also involved in the 3D conversion of Titanic, which is said to be the cause of the delay.

It is said that Landau had already started work on the sequels with his core team including New Zealand effects company Weta Digital that is developing an underwater motion capture system that will help Cameron explore the oceans on Pandora.
