    MUMBAI: Hero Motocorp today announced its association with the Hockey Junior World Cup. Hero will be the title sponsors of the tournament that will see the participation of 16 of the finest junior (under 21yrs) international teams of the world as they fight it out for the title at the famous Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. The tournament will go on from 6 to 15 December, 2013.

     

    Hero Motocorp is an FIH (International Hockey Federation) partner and the title sponsor for all FIH events taking place in India till the end of 2015.

    The tournament features four pools, each of which contains four teams ahead of the quarter-finals, semi-finals, classification and medal matches. Pool A will feature Germany, Pakistan, Belgium and Egypt, while Australia, Spain, Argentina and France are competing in Pool B. Netherlands, Korea, India and Canada will challenge each other in Pool C with England, New Zealand, South Africa and Malaysia going head to head in Pool D.

     

    The Indian team led by Manpreet Singh will open its campaign against the Netherlands, a team that will almost certainly be targeting the title. Playing under home conditions, Indian hockey’s young guns will compete against other top contenders like Germany, Australia and Spain.

    IIMC and QUT join hands for training and capacity building

    NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi, and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia have agreed to collaborate in academic programmes and in frontier areas of research in Media and Communication.

     

    An International Cooperation Agreement to this effect was signed by Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary and IIMC chairman Bimal Julka and Professor Peter Coaldrake, Vice Chancellor of the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

     

    The agreement envisages bringing ICT in academic programmes in a significant way. Both the institutes have agreed for the development of joint venture projects and also for opening avenues for developing a collaborative doctoral programme to benefit students and faculty. The bilateral cooperation agreement also envisages organization of joint academic and scientific activities, such as courses, conferences, seminars, symposia or lectures, exchange of staff and students and exchange of materials and publications of common interest.

    One of the core areas of the agreement is to facilitate training of senior and mid-level Indian Information Service officers at the QUT, especially in use of modern technology and social media for providing information about government policies to stakeholders. The objective is to ensure skill development of IIS officers in critical areas of the changing media landscape.

     

    This is the first agreement signed by IIMC seeking international collaboration and partnership with a foreign university. The agreement aims to facilitate a two-way value added training and capacity building programme in the field of Mass Media and Communication.

     

    This cooperation agreement will be valid for five years and will be reviewed six months prior to expiry and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement.

    Benegal to head Asia Pacific Screen Awards Jury this year

    Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, known as one of the pioneers of the art film movement in the country and the launch of serious television series, will Chair the International Jury of the Seventh Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

     

    Speaking at the Busan International Film Festival, APSA executive chairman Michael Hawkins noted that with India celebrating one hundred years of cinema, it was only befitting that the jury be led by a filmmaker of ‘such gravitas’, adding that the work of selection was being undertaken by a ‘remarkable group of eminent filmmakers.

     

    The jury includes the renowned Srilankan filmmaker Malini Fonseka, Turkish actor Tamer Levent, Swiss director Christoph Schaub, Korean screenwriter and director Tae-yong, and Hong Kong producer Albert Lee.   

     

    Awards will be presented in six categories at the APSA be held at Brisbane in Australia on 12 December.

     

    Benegal, made his debut with Ankir in 1974 which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 24th Berlin International Film Festival, won three national awards, and was nominated for the Academy awards.

     

    Since then, Benegal has made 26 feature films which have won him acclaim in India and overseas. He has also won the highest honour in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievement.

    In addition, he made the epochal ‘Discovery of India’ series based on the book of that name by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

    NEW DELHI: India has been recognised as the ‘Authorising Nation’ under the international Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA) to test and certify Electronics and IT products with respect to cyber security. Thus, India has become the 17th nation to earn such recognition. This international arrangement has 26 member countries. USA, UK, Germany, South Korea, France, Japan, Canada, Australia, Turkey, Malaysia etc. are the other countries who have this recognition.

     

    So far India was having the status of ‘Consuming Nation’ with respect to certification of electronics and IT products. The status of ‘Authorising Nation’ will enable India to test IT and electronics products and issue Certificates which will be acceptable internationally. The recognition would also remove the bottleneck which as of now had prevented international companies from submitting their products for testing and certification in India.

     

    The recognition would also enable investment in setting up infrastructure and labs in public and private sectors in India for testing electronics and IT products.

     

    Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has been operating Common Criteria Certification (CC Certification) scheme in India for the last five-six years. Under it STQC undertakes certification of electronics and IT products after evaluation of the products at its lab in Kolkata. The Certificates issued by STQC Directorate shall now be acceptable internationally by all CCRA member countries.

    Kim Williams quits News Corp

    MUMBAI: Kim Williams has resigned as chief executive of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp Australia, just 20 months after he took on the top post.

     

    He will be succeeded by Julian Clarke, who has a strong publishing background and was most recently chairman of The Herald and Weekly Times.

     

    Murdoch said in a statement that he was thankful for Williams’ services to News Corp, as well as his loyalty and friendship to the company.

     

    “Kim has been a steady and courageous leader at a time when our businesses have faced unprecedented pressure and economic challenges,” he said. “I want to thank him for his unwavering commitment, and the blood, sweat and tears he has put into News Corp Australia.”

     

    Williams was appointed chief executive in December 2011, after 10 years as chief executive of Australia’s dominant pay TV operator Foxtel, which is half owned by News Corp Australia.

     

    News Corp chief executive of, Robert Thomson, said Williams, a 20-year veteran at News Corp, felt that “now is the right moment to leave the company”.

     

    “Kim leaves a remarkable, sustaining legacy at these companies and on modern media in Australia,” Thomson said.

     

    Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp recently broke up into two parts – a publishing firm and a film and television unit. The entertainment firm is called 21st Century Fox while the publishing company retained the name News Corp.

     

    The split was expected to increase scrutiny on the newspapers under the publishing business, as the media industry battles a decline in print advertising and the rise of internet readership.

    MUMBAI: Warner Bros Consumer Products (WBCP) has extended duties of managing director, Australia and New Zealand Preston Kevin Lewis. He will now be looking after the India market, while continuing to drive the successful Australia and New Zealand businesses.

    Lewis will be responsible for building WBCP‘s interests in India and will oversee all sales, marketing, promotions, clip licensing, media and retail partnerships related to merchandising and product licensing business for the market. He will continue to report to WBCP senior VP and GM of Latin America and Asia-Pacific Jeffrey Whalen.

    “I‘m delighted to announce that Preston will be bringing his extensive skill set to the India market, in addition to continuing his existing responsibilities for Australia and New Zealand,” said Jeffrey Whalen. “I am very confident that he will introduce new initiatives, create partnerships with major brands in India and successfully grow our consumer products business in this important market.”

    The appointment comes as WBCP places increased focus on emerging markets to develop significant brand growth around the Studio‘s extensive portfolio of properties. Expanding his role into India, Lewis will continue to build the business utilising WBCP‘s arsenal of brands, from classic animated fare like Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry, to the DC Comics Super Heroes portfolio, and theatrical tent pole films including Man of Steel, Godzilla and The Hobbit Trilogy, to hit television properties such asThe Big Bang Theory.

    Lewis joined Warner Bros Consumer Products in 2006 as VP of international licensing and immediately created and implemented a series of strategic initiatives for the Australia and New Zealand businesses that have delivered significant brand presence, growth and profitability. Prior to joining WBCP, Lewis held a variety of positions within major multi-national entertainment companies including Disney Consumer Products, MTV Program Enterprises and HBO Home Video.

    Lewis holds a bachelor‘s degree in American Studies and Organizational Behavior from Yale University.
