Whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal, look below for a few simple tips, tools and strategies from the audiobook you need to transform.

Master your habit formation by cultivating a clear vision

This audiobook brings to listeners a simple yet profound truth: clarity breeds success! Merely expressing a desire to change is insufficient; one must chart a clear path forward. By deciding precisely when and where a new habit will take place, we can eliminate ambiguity and increase our likelihood of follow-through. James elucidates, “Many people think they lack motivation when what they really lack is clarity. It is not always obvious when and where to take action. Some people spend their entire lives waiting for the time to be right to make an improvement.” To add to that, he introduces the concept of habit stacking, a strategy that capitalises on the interconnectedness of behaviours. He insists that we anchor a new habit to an existing routine, “The key is to tie your desired behaviour into something you already do each day. Once you have mastered this basic structure, you can begin to create larger stacks by chaining small habits together.”

    Create an environment for success

James believes that designing our environment for success is crucial, as environmental cues greatly influence our behaviour. He says that by creating conducive environments that support our desired habits, we can effortlessly adhere to our goals. “You can train yourself to link a particular habit with a particular context. It is easier to associate a new habit with a new context than to build a new habit in the face of competing cues. It can be difficult to go to bed early if you watch television in your bedroom each night. It can be hard to study in the living room without getting distracted if that’s where you always play video games. But when you step outside your normal environment, you leave your behavioural biases behind. You aren’t battling old environmental cues, which allows new habits to form without interruption.”

Follow the 2-minute rule to beat procrastination

In the battle against procrastination, James proposes to employ a simple yet powerful weapon: the two-minute rule. By breaking tasks down into manageable steps, we can overcome the inertia that is often associated with daunting tasks. “You can usually figure out the gateway habits that will lead to your desired outcome by mapping out your goals on a scale from ‘very easy’ to ‘very hard.’ For instance, your goal might be to run a marathon, but your gateway habit is to put on your running shoes. That’s how you follow the Two-Minute Rule,” says James. Mentioning how initiating an activity takes precedence over perfection, he asserts, “People often think it’s weird to get hyped about reading one page or meditating for one minute or making one sales call. But the point is not to do one thing. The point is to master the habit of showing up. As you master the art of showing up, the first two minutes simply become a ritual at the beginning of a larger routine.”

Keep tabs on your progress with a habit tracker!

To ensure the longevity of our habits, he advocates for the judicious use of habit tracking, “A habit tracker is a simple way to measure whether you did a habit. The most basic format is to get a calendar and cross off each day you stick with your routine. For example, if you meditate on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, each of those dates gets an X. As time rolls by, the calendar becomes a record of your habit streak. Habit tracking creates a visual cue that can remind you to act, is inherently motivating because you see the progress you are making and don’t want to lose it, and feels satisfying whenever you record another successful instance of your habit.” Incorporating habit tracking into our daily routines not only enhances accountability but also cultivates a sense of accomplishment with each milestone achieved.

Unlock motivation with the Goldilocks rule

Central to James’ philosophy is the Goldilocks Rule, a principle that underscores the importance of striking the right balance between challenge and competence. He says, “The Goldilocks Rule states that humans experience peak motivation when working on tasks that are right on the edge of their current abilities. Not too hard. Not too easy. Just right.” Making use of the Goldilocks Rule can empower us to pursue endeavours that stretch our limits without overwhelming us. In the Audible audiobook, he explains this citing an example, “The human brain loves a challenge, but only if it is within an optimal zone of difficulty. If you love tennis and try to play a serious match against a four-year-old, you will quickly become bored. It’s too easy. You’ll win every point. In contrast, if you play a professional tennis player like Roger Federer or Serena Williams, you will quickly lose motivation because the match is too difficult. Now consider playing tennis against someone who is your equal. As the game progresses, you win a few points and you lose a few. You have a good chance of winning, but only if you really try. Your focus narrows, distractions fade away, and you find yourself fully invested in the task at hand. This is a challenge of just manageable difficulty and it is a prime example of the Goldilocks Rule.”

World Cancer Day 2024: Manisha Koirala & Tahira Kashyap Khurrana inspire resilience on Audible

Mumbai: On World Cancer Day, listen to the inspiring stories of Manisha Koirala and Tahira Kashyap Khurrana, who displayed resilience and incredible courage in battling the formidable C-word, where they discuss their fight against cancer and healing journeys in ‘Healed’ and ‘My Ex-Breast’ respectively on Audible. Their journeys are supreme examples of understanding how individuals have distinct coping mechanisms to deal with their illnesses. While Manisha embraces mindfulness and practices gratitude, finding strength in being present in the moment, Tahira fearlessly confronts the disease with a positive spirit, accepting her body’s changes without allowing them to define her, thereby setting an inspiring example for others. As we stand united against cancer this World Cancer Day, let us draw inspiration from their healing journeys and the takeaways shared by them in their audiobook and podcast on Audible.

Practice gratitude and mindfulness: Manisha Koirala’s lesson after her fight against cancer

    Healed

“The survival rate of Stage IV cancer is only 19%, according to the American Cancer Society. But I’m still here, alive. This perhaps means anybody can be in that 19% group, so please do not lose hope. Cancer is not a death sentence.” She hopes that one day the world will be cancer-free. She thinks this is a good opportunity to remind yourself to change your lifestyle for the better, because your body may not be suffering from a disease but at dis-ease, given the frantic amount of stress one faces on a daily basis in today’s fast-paced life.

“It took cancer to make me more mindful of everything around me, taking one day at a time. Let me share some things that have worked for me positively.” Talking of the practices that helped her get through tough times, she mentioned, “Introspect, dig deep, and seek clarity; Be kind and gentle on yourself; Stay committed to change; Develop an attitude of gratitude; Develop positivity, drop negativity” She strongly believes in the power of mindfulness and holistic healing, expressing how delighted she is now that it is accepted by medical science worldwide now.

Baring scars and breaking barriers: Tahira Kashyap’s powerful journey of self-acceptance

    My Ex-Breast

Tahira recounts her experience of interacting with fellow patients on her visits to the hospital when the doctors told her that the physical aspect of cancer doesn’t do as much harm as does the mental condition of the patients along with the societal pressure. This is when she decided to share her story with the world. And then on World Cancer Day, she did what no one expected her to do. She said, “I feel like this day is my day and I have no qualms admitting that. A few days back, at work, I asked my producer and one of India’s best photographers, Atul Kasbekar if he could take my photo.” She added, “This won’t be a regular picture, I want to celebrate my scars.”

She went ahead and removed her t-shirt to get a few pictures clicked. While she felt hesitant and self-conscious initially, she got comfortable after a few clicks. She mentioned, “I know I wouldn’t have been able to do this had I not been so confident in my own skin. So, my picture, it’s me wearing denims, a topless torso, a bald head, opticals and hoops. That’s it…and oh, my scar! It runs half across my back.” This is how she broke the internet with her Instagram post a few years ago, showcasing her ensuring spirit and acceptance of her scars without letting them define her.

    https://www.audible.in/pd/What-I-Know-for-Sure-Audiobook/B07B62MHBX?

Here we share some of these takeaways:

Live in the moment to transform your lives

In this audiobook, Oprah Winfrey discusses the importance of experiencing life fully. She advocates for living in the present and finding pleasure in simple, everyday moments. She underscores the transformative power of choosing joy, whether through relishing a good meal, savouring a delightful experience, or connecting with the world of spirit. “I take my pleasures seriously. I work hard and play well; I believe in the yin and yang of life. It doesn’t take a lot to make me happy because I find satisfaction in so much of what I do. Some satisfactions are higher-rated than others, of course. And because I try to practise what I preach—living in the moment—I am consciously attuned most of the time to how much pleasure I am receiving,” she asserts.

Face challenges with strength — shift, learn, and ultimately grow

In the second chapter of her audiobook, Oprah talks about her transformative journey from her birth in rural Mississippi to becoming an influential media mogul. She stresses the significance of taking responsibility for one’s life, breaking free from past programming, and embracing every day as an opportunity for growth. “That’s where strength comes from—our ability to face resistance and walk through it. It’s not that people who persevere don’t ever feel doubt, fear, and exhaustion. They do. But in the toughest moments, we can have faith that if we take just one step more than we feel we’re capable of, if we draw on the incredible resolve every human being possesses, we’ll learn some of the most profound lessons life has to offer,” she shared.

    Prioritise self-love for lasting relationships

Reflecting on interviews with individuals who had cheated on their spouses, she discovers a common yearning for affirmation and connection. Oprah emphasises the importance of self-love, stressing that external validation cannot replace the internal recognition of one’s worth. Sharing her views on the universal desire for acknowledgment and love, Oprah said, “When you make loving others the story of your life, there’s never a final chapter, because the legacy continues. You lend your light to one person, and he or she shines it on another and another and another. And I know for sure that in the final analysis of our lives—when the to-do lists are no more, when the frenzy is finished, when our e-mail inboxes are empty—the only thing that will have any lasting value is whether we’ve loved others and whether they’ve loved us.”

Believe in the power of gratitude

For years, Oprah maintained a gratitude journal but found herself drifting away from this practice due to a hectic schedule. Reflecting on her past entries, she realised the transformative power of acknowledging simple joys. She recounts the influence of Maya Angelou, who taught her to say “thank-you” in challenging moments. She believes that “being grateful all the time isn’t easy. But it’s when you feel least thankful that you are most in need of what gratitude can give you: perspective. Gratitude can transform any situation. It alters your vibration, moving you from negative energy to positive. It’s the quickest, easiest, most powerful way to effect change in your life—this I know for sure.” Oprah credits a friend for inspiring her to continue her iconic show, helping her reflect on the ripple effect of positivity and change that she transpires through her program.

Say no, set boundaries, and prioritise self-care for authentic living

Learning to say no at the age of 40 marked a pivotal moment for her, realising the importance of setting boundaries. Driven by a history of abuse, Oprah discovered the power of intention and the necessity of aligning actions with genuine desires. Oprah advocates it by saying, “before you say yes to anyone, ask yourself: What is my truest intention? It should come from the purest part of you, not from your head. If you have to ask for advice, give yourself time to let a yes or no resound within you. When it’s right, your whole body feels it.” Through her candid revelations, Oprah encourages individuals to live authentically, free from the constraints of societal expectations. In her concluding notes to another chapter, she says, “What I know for sure is this: Whatever you fear most has no power—it is your fear that has the power. The thing itself cannot touch you. But your fear can rob you of your life. Each time you give in to it, you lose strength, while your fear gains it. That’s why you must decide that no matter how difficult the path ahead seems, you will push past your anxiety and keep on stepping.”

    Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast

    Building meaningful friendships

In conversation with legendary poet and teacher Elizabeth Alexander, Michelle Obama reflects on their 30 years of friendship. They discuss their shared journey of motherhood as they grew to adulthood, the twists and turns of careers, growing older, and their retreat at Camp David with other friends. Michelle emphasizes, “Whether I met you three months ago, or three decades ago, if we’ve built a meaningful friendship, I will work hard to foster our relationship and be there for you when you need me. I’ve got your back because I know you got mine. And one of those people I know without a doubt that I can count on is my dear friend, Elizabeth Alexander. It felt like a warm blanket to sit down with her for a long soulful conversation about friendship, fostering them, nurturing them, and the deep humanity that lies within them. Now I’ve known Elizabeth for 30 years, since long before the presidency was even a glimmer in Barack’s eye. She’s a distinguished poet, writer, and academic. But to me, she’s even more than that. She’s an authentic and genuine friend, and she’ll always have a spot at  my kitchen table.”

    Striving for excellence and parenting

Gayle King and Michelle Obama open up about parenting and striving for excellence as a pursuit. Michelle Obama encourages young people to take charge of their lives and make excellence a practice, “Excellence is a thing you practice. You practice who you want to be, every single day. I try to tell my girls this – if you want to be a professional and be on time, you have got to start doing that when you’re seven or nine. You don’t wait until you get to a position to try to show up. So I have been practicing getting things right for a long time. So I don’t know how to be late,” said Obama. When asked about parenting their two girls, she said, “I treated parenting my girls like  my parents parented me. I wanted them to be independent early. I wanted them to be able to wake themselves up, make their own beds, they had to do their own homework. There was no helicoptering because I wanted them to rise and fall on their own merits.”

    The power of small

America’s favourite former First Lady shares that she grew up in circumstances where bars were set quite low for women of colour. She did not let these conditions overpower her, and credit due to her parents for always making her feel seen and heard at home.  She used it as an opportunity to prove to the world what she was capable of. As she goes on to detail her approach to life, Michelle uses her wit in sharing some insights. She compares knitting to taking on tasks in life and suggests instead of overwhelming ourselves with what we cannot control we must focus on the smaller tasks at hand. She goes on to share an anecdote of when she was overwhelmed while preparing a speech, she says, “I am trying to go big, I am trying to think of a big speech and I don’t have that platform in quarantine. But I can focus on what’s in my lap. Let me look at what I uniquely can control. The truth is what’s in our lap. The fact that yes, there are riots going on but there are people who are also coming out and marching. They saw brutality but the country remembered for a time they had come together around Black Lives Matter. There were all these emergency workers sacrificing themselves in this quarantine. People were giving, we were a better nation than we were being taught. But we lose sight of the beauty of what’s small because we are taught that big is better. This is where great becomes the enemy of good. And you don’t have the power to change the world until you do the thing that you can actually control, the thing in your lap. Let us now value the power of small.”

    Decoding fear

In conversation with Ellen Degeneres, Michelle Obama elaborates why we must overcome our fears and step out of our comfort zone to get ahead in life. “There is a fear that keeps us stuck. The fear of others, the fear of somebody who is not like you, the fear of somebody who has got a different skin colour than you. That is an irrational fear. If we don’t learn to decode it and to know when our fear is keeping us safe from when it is keeping us limited and narrow and small. If we don’t start thinking about how we process fear, I know I have had to. I’ve had to learn to determine when my fear is rational and when it’s just me not wanting to do something that makes me uncomfortable.” She goes on to add, “Learning to be comfortably afraid is learning to rationally deal with your fear so that you can get to the other side. When you get to the other side, nine times out of ten there is a lot of growth, opportunity and possibility if you can decode it properly.”

Michelle’s classic wit, candor, and compassion infused in her anecdotal learnings as she engages in an insightful yet fun banter with exceptional luminaries is bound to lighten up your world. Tune into Audible and listen to the Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast.

The Skincare Answer Book by Dr Jaishree Sharad

She has worked with celebrities like Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez. With over two decades of mastery in cosmetic dermatology, she unveils the coveted beauty secrets (especially for the winters) that have left celebrities glowing on and off the screen.

. Tip 1: Choose the right moisturiser based on your skin type. “You can choose your moisturiser based on your skin type (dry, oily, combination or sensitive) and the climate. If you have oily skin, choose a water- or gel–based, non-comedogenic moisturiser. If you have dry skin, you need a cream-based moisturiser. If you have acne-prone skin, opt for a water-based moisturiser. If you have sensitive skin, you will need a moisturiser with minimal preservatives and no fragrance” shares Dr. Jaishree.

. Tip 2: Seasonal dryness or oiliness? Use cleansers, choosing a suitable sunscreen, and considering supplements. Addressing concerns like skin peeling despite moisturiser use, Dr. Jaishree sheds light on an essential winter skincare routine saying, “Use non-foamy soap-free cleansers. Avoid washing your face more than once or twice a day. Apply a skin repair cream which contains glycerine and ceramides, thrice a day. Use a mineral sunscreen; Avoid using all active serums till your skin heals. Take supplements of Vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids while avoiding exfoliation too.”

Apply leftover creams and serums on forearms to elbows. Massage the neck regularly with 25 upward strokes daily. Afterward, massage the sides from under the ear towards the collarbone with a couple of downward strokes for lymphatic drainage.”

. Tip 2: Keep those beach vibes alive! Say no to chemical exfoliants on sun-kissed skin. Vasudha recommends using simple yet effective practices. She asserts, “use a loofah twice a week in the shower to exfoliate the body. Choose oil or body lotion to moisturise while still damp. For rough texture on hips and upper thighs, apply glycolic acid toner before bed. Prescription retinoids also work well, but avoid scrubbing if using chemical exfoliants. If regularly going to the beach, avoid using chemical exfoliants on these areas.”

    Nutrition

    Yuktahaar by Munmun Ganeriwal

She is an award-winning nutritionist and exercise consultant behind the brilliant physique of stars like Taapsee Pannu and Nayanthara. Over the last 19 years, she has worked to combine traditional Indian foods, ancient Indian yogic practices and Ayurveda principles with gut microbiota study to understand and help fight obesity and other diseases.

. Tip 1: Emphasise the importance of mindfulness in every bite! “What matters most about food is not calories or nutrients, but whether it has been cooked by a human being or a corporation.” Munmun’s wisdom extends beyond mere dietary advice; In her audiobook, she advocates for a mindful and stress-free eating environment. “You have to sit down to eat. This means you can’t eat while walking or standing, and the worst I have come across is lying down and eating. Eat in a clean place that is free from clutter. Avoid taking meals at your work desk, on the bed, on the couch and in your car (you got that right, you shouldn’t drive while eating)” she advises.

. Tip 2: Eat an early dinner. Ensure 12 hours of fasting between that last meal of your day and the first of the next day. Aligning with both ancient wisdom and modern science, Munmun shares her circadian rhythm insights. “Our circadian rhythm expects us to eat during the day when the sun is shining. The first light of morning resets the master clock in our brain, and similarly, the first meal of the morning resets all other organ clocks. By having a hot, herbal drink soon after you wake up, you reinforce the message that it is morning to the clocks in our liver and digestive system,” she explains.

Kya Lifestyle Hai by Dr Siddhant Bhargava

He is the go-to nutrition expert for celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, and Sara Ali Khan, has not only cracked the code to personalised nutrition but has also transformed the lives of over 4,500 individuals.

. Tip 1: Rev up your metabolism and curb hunger. Aim for 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. Dr Siddhant Bhargava, in his Audible podcast, simplifies the intricacies of nutrition. Addressing the often-overlooked macro-nutrient protein, he stated, “For every kilogram of your body weight, you are required to consume a minimum 1 gram of protein. Incorporate paneer, pulses, chicken, eggs, fish, soya, milk, curd, etc.  in your diet. If you don’t consume enough protein, your body will use your muscles for the same, resulting in muscle loss and a dip in your metabolic rate. If your metabolic rate decreases, losing weight will become tougher because the calorie deficit will also decline.” He concludes with a powerful mantra for boosting metabolic rates, “the more you eat protein, the less it will make you hungry.”

. Tip 2: Master the synergy of nutrition and exercise to unlock optimal results for weight loss. Dr Siddhant shared, “Whenever you’re trying to lose weight, to burn calories, do not do only cardio. You have to be doing a combination of cardio and strength training like gym, yoga, pilates – anything where you’re working against resistance because if you don’t do this, your body will again start burning muscle. Whenever a calorie deficit is created, your body needs to get the required calories from your body itself to burn. Your body can burn either fat or muscle and since fat is a reserve, it is simpler for your body to burn muscle.” He ends by saying that preventing muscle loss is an important part of one’s weight loss journey.
